Nice work on this. The native <button> wrapper is the right shape for #1258, the image keeps its own role and alt, and the focus management (move to close, trap Tab, restore to trigger) all reads correctly. CI is green.
disabled on the trigger breaks linked images until JS runs.
For an image wrapped in a link, [](url), the served markup is <a><button disabled><img></a>. A disabled button swallows clicks from its entire subtree, so the anchor never fires. I checked this in Chrome with the exact markup from this PR:
- with
disabled: clicking the image did nothing, no navigation, and a document-level click listener did not fire either - the same markup without
disabled: clicking the image navigated normally
So linked images are unclickable until DOMContentLoaded finishes unwrapping them, and stay unclickable with JS off. This pattern is used in content today, for example the diagram in the Kubernetes request flow tutorial.
Dropping disabled resolves it, since an enabled button inside an anchor still lets the click reach the link. The tradeoff is that without JS the buttons stay tab stops that do nothing, which seems like the smaller cost compared to a dead link.
Smaller points
- The description says WebP processing is guarded with
reflect.IsImageResourceProcessable, but there is no such guard in the diff or in the head version of the file. The existing extension check already limits processing to png/jpg/jpeg, so this may be a leftover from an earlier iteration. image-modal.htmlstill ends without a trailing newline.- The preview for this PR was pruned by the retention job, so there is nothing to eyeball right now. A fresh push regenerates it.
Behaviour change worth noting for others reading: raw images inside links no longer get a modal handler. Previously both happened and navigation won anyway, so the visible result is the same.

This disabled is the one I verified in the browser: with it, a click anywhere on an image wrapped in a Markdown link never reaches the anchor, because a disabled button swallows events from its subtree. Without it, the same markup navigates fine. Suggest rendering the button enabled and letting the DOMContentLoaded unwrap handle the nested-interactive case as it already does.

This chain can collapse to modalTrigger = trigger || image;. The image.closest(".md__image-trigger") branch re-derives what trigger already holds, and the document.activeElement fallback is unreachable because the guard above guarantees image is non-null by this point.

With display: block; width: 100%, the focus ring spans the full column rather than the image for any image narrower than its container. Worth a look once a preview exists.

@leecalcote a question for this, separate from the review. #1258 raised whether every Markdown image should be expandable, or only ones marked for it. This PR makes all ~380 of them keyboard-focusable, so each image becomes a tab stop. On pages carrying 20 or more images that is a real cost for keyboard and screen reader users to tab past. Do you want all images expandable, or should it be opt-in (say a title or class on the ones worth zooming)? Happy either way, just want it to be a deliberate call rather than a side effect. |
- Wrap Markdown images in native button triggers (.md__image-trigger) with aria-label - Unwrap triggers inside anchor links on DOMContentLoaded to maintain valid HTML - Size triggers with width: fit-content so focus rings snugly wrap images - Add focus trap and Escape key listener within modal dialog - Move focus to close button when modal opens and restore focus to trigger on close - Add fallback focus restoration for raw content images - Add focus-visible indicator styling for trigger and close buttons Fixes layer5io#1258 Signed-off-by: Yashi <yashi.singhal410@gmail.com>

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Preserve the image role outside the button.
Both branches place the <img> inside a <button>. Button descendants are presentational in the accessibility tree. Screen-reader users therefore encounter the button label, but cannot find the standalone Markdown image as an image until they open the preview. This conflicts with the stated goal of retaining the image’s role. Render the image beside its button trigger, then update the modal’s image lookup to match. (w3.org)

Thanks @hiyach28 for catching that with the disabled button and testing it out! I've pushed an update with all of these addressed: Dropped disabled from the buttons so linked images aren't blocked from navigating before JS runs. The push should kick off a fresh preview build as well. Let me know if everything looks good on your end! |

Fixes #1258.
Description
This PR makes Markdown images and the lightbox modal fully keyboard-accessible and WCAG-compliant:
<button type="button" class="md__image-trigger">witharia-label="Expand image{{ with $alt }}: {{ . }}{{ end }}", bringing native keyboard focus and Enter/Space activation..md__image-triggerwithwidth: fit-content; max-width: 100%; margin: 0 auto;and a visible:focus-visibleoutline so focus indicators snugly wrap the image boundaries.TabandShift+Tabfocus within the modal dialog while open.Escapekey and background overlay click.DOMContentLoaded, unwraps any.md__image-triggernested inside anchor links (<a>) so interactive elements are not nested inside links, and marks linked images withdata-modal="false"so clicking them navigates the link.
