Measured 2026-08-27: this gate caught 0 of 6 invisible-character test cases. It has never detected an NBSP, zero-width space, BOM, soft hyphen, bidi override or word joiner.

Root cause

The pattern used UTF-8 byte sequences (\xc2\xa0) while grep -P matches characters. Bytes c2 a0 are one character U+00A0; \xc2\xa0 asks for two, U+00C2 then U+00A0 — never present.

grep -P '\xc2\xa0'  ->  miss
grep -P '\x{a0}'    ->  MATCH

Only \x00 worked, being single-byte in both readings. The gate ran, passed, and could not see what it exists to see.

Fixed

  • codepoint escapes in place of byte sequences
  • C0 controls \x01-\x08,\x0B,\x0C,\x0E-\x1F added (TAB/LF/CR excluded)
  • grep -a — without it grep skips any NUL-bearing file as binary

The C0 range matters: a stray backspace byte made a workflow unparseable in developer-ecosystem, so it never ran — and this linter called it clean.

Canonical fix: hyperpolymath/empty-linter#70. 1 file(s) here.

Verified: YAML re-parsed, and the corrected pattern was confirmed to catch a real NBSP before the change was kept.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved detection of invisible and control characters during automated validation.
    • Scans binary files as text to ensure hidden characters are identified consistently.

Walkthrough

The dogfood gate now detects invisible characters by Unicode code point. It also scans binary files as text and includes additional control and formatting characters.

Changes

Invisible-character gate

Layer / File(s) Summary
Unicode pattern scan
.github/workflows/dogfood-gate.yml
The gate uses Unicode code-point escapes and adds C0 controls, word joiner, and BOM detection. grep -aPrl scans binary files as text.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~5 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f5383

The CI gate now detects several previously missed invisible characters, but files beginning with a UTF-8 BOM can still pass undetected. This bounded correctness gap means merge should wait for a separate leading-BOM check and regression case.

Suggested reviewers: metadatastician

Poem

A rabbit checks the hidden trace,
Unicode marks fall into place.
The grep now reads each file with care,
BOMs and controls cannot hide there.
Clean text hops safely through the gate.

Make the invisible-character scan fail closed.

PATTERNS passes \x{feff} to GNU grep -P, which can return status 2: character code point value in \x{} or \o{} is too large. The workflow suppresses this error and does not check EL_EXIT, so an empty result file can produce a false zero-finding result. Use runner-compatible matching and add a separate byte-prefix check for EF BB BF.

Pull Request Overview

The PR successfully addresses the failure of the invisible-character CI gate by transitioning to Unicode codepoint escapes and ensuring files containing null bytes are scanned rather than skipped. Codacy reports the changes are up to standards.

While the implementation aligns with the requirements, there are minor refinements suggested for the regex pattern to include the DEL character and for the cleanup of redundant grep flags. A key gap is the lack of automated tests to verify that the updated regex correctly identifies the targeted invisible characters and control codes.

About this PR

  • There are no automated tests provided to verify that the regex patterns in the workflow file correctly identify the targeted characters.

Test suggestions

  • Verify detection of non-breaking space (U+00A0)
  • Verify detection of zero-width space (U+200B)
  • Verify detection of BOM (U+FEFF)
  • Verify detection of C0 control character (e.g. Backspace \x08)
  • Verify grep -a correctly scans files containing NUL bytes

⚪ LOW RISK

Suggestion: The -r (recursive) flag is redundant when grep is being invoked by find on individual file paths. Removing it keeps the command concise, while maintaining the -a flag is essential to ensure grep treats files with null bytes or control characters as text.

Add a separate leading-BOM check.

The pattern includes U+FEFF, but this grep path can consume a UTF-8 BOM at byte offset 0 before matching. A file beginning with EF BB BF can therefore pass the gate. Add a separate byte-prefix check, merge and de-duplicate its paths with the main results, and add a leading-BOM regression case. The -a option only makes binary input searchable; it does not replace the BOM check. (gnu.org)
