Summary

This implements the owner ruling of 2026-11-05, "stopgap now, then auth". The public API has no authentication, and its execution routes spawn prover binaries on caller input. The deploy unit also ran :latest with AutoUpdate=registry, so every release auto-deployed to production.

This PR closes both doors at the proxy and the quadlet. It is wave W0 of the engineering plan. Bearer auth (W1a) and a re-pin to the signed image (W1b) follow, and they end the stopgap.

Host action needed. Merging changes nothing on the server. The runbook is in deploy/hetzner/README.adoc under "Containment stopgap":

  1. Disable podman-auto-update.timer.
  2. Record the running digest.
  3. Copy the two files into place.
  4. daemon-reload, then restart.
  5. Probe: /api/health should return 200, and POST /api/verify should return 403.

Changes

  • deploy/hetzner/Caddyfile: a @public matcher forwards only GET/HEAD on /api/health and /api/provers. Every other request gets a 403 from Caddy and never reaches the container, including /api/prove, /api/verify*, /api/session/*, /api/agent/* and /api/search.
  • deploy/hetzner/echidna.container: drops AutoUpdate=registry and adds Pull=never, so the unit runs the image already on the host. This freezes the image. It does not verify it, and the comments say so.
  • deploy/hetzner/README.adoc: a new "Containment stopgap" section with the host runbook and the exit condition. The old "no API auth at launch" decision is marked superseded, and §5 (unattended rollout) is marked disabled while the stopgap holds.
  • docs/HOSTING.adoc: the AutoUpdate bullet is replaced with the stopgap description.

RSR Quality Checklist

Required

  • Tests pass: config and docs only, with no Rust touched.
  • Linter is clean: asciidoctor -v reports 0 warnings on both docs.
  • No banned language patterns
  • SPDX headers present (existing)
  • No secrets

As Applicable

  • Documentation updated

Testing

All of this was run locally in the session.

  • Caddy 2.6.2 (apt): caddy validate passes on a copy with the caddy-ratelimit plugin directive stripped, because stock Caddy lacks that plugin, and with the site rebound to :18080.
  • Behaviour: I ran that config in front of a Bun stub backend and probed it.
Request Result
GET /api/health, HEAD /api/health, GET /api/provers, GET /api/provers?x=1 200, forwarded
POST /api/verify, /api/prove, /api/verify_raw, /api/session/create, POST /api/health 403
GET /api/session/abc/state, /api/search, /.well-known/groove 403
/api/health/../verify, /api/health/%2e%2e/verify, /api/health%2F..%2Fverify, //api/verify, /api/provers/ 403
GET /API/HEALTH forwarded

GET /API/HEALTH is forwarded because Caddy's path matcher ignores case. axum's routes are case-sensitive, so this request can only reach a 404 on the backend, never an execution route. I left it as is rather than complicate the matcher.

  • Quadlet: podman 4.9.3 quadlet -dryrun accepts the unit. It emits --pull never and no auto-update label. The host runs podman 5.x per the README, and Pull= is supported there too.

Not tested: the real caddy-rl:2 image with the rate-limit plugin, and the live host. Both need the host steps above.

Owner ruling 2026-11-05. The public API has no authentication, and its
execution routes spawn prover binaries on caller input. The unit also
ran :latest with AutoUpdate=registry, so every release auto-deployed to
production.

- Caddyfile: forward only GET/HEAD on /api/health and /api/provers.
Every other request gets a 403 from Caddy and never reaches the
  container: /api/prove, /api/verify*, /api/session/*, /api/agent/*,
  /api/search and the rest.
- echidna.container: drop AutoUpdate=registry and set Pull=never, so the
  host keeps running the image it already has. This freezes the image;
  it does not verify it.
- README.adoc and docs/HOSTING.adoc: a host runbook (disable the
auto-update timer, record the running digest, restart, probe), and
the exit condition: the stopgap ends in the change that lands bearer
auth and re-pins to the signed image by digest.

Tested locally:
- caddy 2.6.2 validates a copy with the rate_limit plugin directive
  stripped.
- Behind it, a stub backend refuses 15 execution and path-trick
requests and forwards the 2 allowed routes.
- podman 4.9.3 quadlet -dryrun emits --pull never and no auto-update
  label.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • The Hetzner API now forwards only GET and HEAD requests to the health and prover endpoints. Other requests receive HTTP 403 and are not forwarded to the container.
  • Chores
    • Automatic image updates are disabled, and the host uses its existing image without pulling a replacement.
  • Documentation
    • Hosting guidance explains the temporary request restrictions, image handling, verification steps and conditions for restoring unattended rollouts.

The Hetzner deployment now forwards only GET and HEAD requests for /api/health and /api/provers. Other requests receive HTTP 403. Automatic image pulls and registry updates are disabled. The documentation describes the containment procedure and its exit conditions.

Changes: Hetzner API containment

Layer / File(s) Summary
Request restrictions and rate limiting
deploy/hetzner/Caddyfile
Caddy matches only GET and HEAD requests for /api/health and /api/provers. It applies the 30-events-per-minute client limit before the handlers. Other requests receive HTTP 403.
Image pull and rollout changes
deploy/hetzner/echidna.container, docs/HOSTING.adoc
The container unit sets Pull=never and removes AutoUpdate=registry. The deployment description retains HealthOnFailure=kill, so systemd restarts the unit after an unhealthy-container failure.
Containment deployment procedure
deploy/hetzner/README.adoc
The guide documents image checks, host-specific restart steps, response verification, containment exit conditions, and restrictions on later auto-update instructions.

CodeRabbit review of #461.

- Caddyfile: the site-level rate_limit (ordered `before reverse_proxy`)
sorted after the new terminal `handle` blocks, so it never ran. The
limiter and both handlers now sit in one `route` block, which keeps
the written order, with the limiter first.
Reproduced with a stand-in directive ordered the same way: with the
old layout it was absent on proxied requests, and with the route
block it is present. Every refusal still holds.
- README runbook:
  - detect a quadlet or appendix install before changing anything, and
    give the appendix host its own step (only the proxy changes there);
  - record the running container's image ID, not the tag's digest, and
re-point :latest at it if they differ, so Pull=never restarts the
    image that was running;
  - verify the same image afterwards.
- §5 note: the auto-update commands apply only to a tag-based Image=
with AutoUpdate=registry. A digest pin changes only by PR.

…sound` (#1414)

## What this adds

One new plan document,
`docs/ULTRAPLAN-ECHIDNA-ENGINEERING-ROUTE-2026-11-05.adoc` (v0.1.0). It
is the companion to the proof-route ultraplan (#1397). That plan covers
the route *between* systems (Hypatia → echidnabot → ECHIDNA → receipt)
and leaves ECHIDNA itself out of scope. This one plans ECHIDNA and its
direct consumers: echidnabot, proof-burrower, gitbot-fleet, panic-attack
and verisimdb.

The two plans meet at `echidna.prove.result/1`. A back-link has been
added to #1397's document.

Contents:
- **Verdict in one page.** The live unauthenticated host, integrity
checking that fails open, the ignored sandbox flag, no certificates, two
latent trust-kernel defects, and the 2026-11-30 CI cliff. Three of these
were re-checked against echidna `0211aa0`.
- **Architecture.** 13 layers and the flow of one obligation through
them.
- **Who owns what** across repositories.
- **The must-create list.**
- **Ladders:** proof (binding formal claims to the shipped Rust),
solving and testing (cheapest guard first), and theory (Θ1–Θ15).
- **Experiments** E0–E14.
- **The ultracode session.** 13 waves, each with lanes that own disjoint
files, a PASS/FAIL/DEFERRED exit gate, and the rulings it needs
beforehand.
- **Also:** cross-repository actions, risks, owner-only actions, and the
ruling schedule.

## Rulings recorded (R0, 2026-11-05)

1. **Live host:** stopgap now, then auth. The stopgap is
[hyperpolymath/echidna#461](hyperpolymath/echidna#461)
and needs the owner's host action.
2. **CI-4:** each allow-fail unit is decided individually, and the Guix
T1 job is retired.
3. **#32:** an Idris2 spec, **Epi-gated**. This is the most elegant arm,
and the owner chose it over the synthesis's Level3 recommendation. The
doc writes out the consequences:
   - cross-checked results show an honest Level2 until W4a;
   - **no** `legacy_level` field is added;
   - the A-10 cap rule becomes a theorem of the spec;
- Level5 needs two certified small-kernel confirmers, each at Epi or
above.
4. **This plan's home is standards, and W0 starts next.**

The rest of R0 is still open: integrity policy, contract shape,
`ci-gate`, single authorities, echidnabot and CLAUDE.md, and the
burrower pin.

## How it was made

Four planners wrote independent routes. Three judging lenses scored
them, a critic attacked the synthesis, and the synthesis was revised.

The workflow's own tally split two routes' scores because their names
were spelled two ways. The merged totals are in the doc: A 23, B 21, D
20, C 19.5. The plan uses Route A's order and Route B's architecture.

## Checks run locally

- `asciidoctor -v --failure-level WARN` on the new document reports 0
warnings. The touched #1397 document also renders clean.
- **Edge claim, reproduced:** `awk -f check.awk place.txt edges.txt` in
the new companion directory gives 87 strictly ordered edges, 2 same-lane
stacks and 6 that hold at part level (justified in `over.txt`).
- `scripts/check-canonical-names.sh origin/main`: ok.
- `scripts/check-standards-map.sh`: GATE D passed.
- `git diff --check`: clean.
- `scripts/link-rot-guard.sh docs` exits 1 on the untouched base too,
and none of its findings are in the new files.
- `validate-spdx.sh` flags none of the new files.

## Not done

- No code changes here. The ECHIDNA work starts with W0.
- Most of the body is generated from the synthesis output and was
reviewed against it, not rewritten line by line. Where a later ruling
overrides it, the override is stated in the "What the Epi-gated ruling
changes" section and marked inline.

Update the post-install verification example.

The containment stopgap blocks POST /api/verify with HTTP 403, but this “End-to-end” example still sends prover input to that route. A correct containment response can therefore look like a failed deployment. Use GET /api/provers, or document the 403 as the expected result.

Restore the auto-update contract before enabling the timer.

The current echidna.container has no AutoUpdate=registry label. Enabling podman-auto-update.timer therefore does not roll out a fixed :latest. Remove this tag-based branch, or explicitly restore AutoUpdate=registry and reload the updated unit before enabling the timer.

Persist the recorded image ID.

RUNNING is a shell-local variable from step 2. If the operator runs this separate step 5 block in a new shell, $RUNNING is empty and same-image never prints. Store the ID in a file, or make step 5 read the recorded value explicitly.

P2 Badge Keep the machine-readable deployment policy synchronized

The hosting document now says automatic updates are disabled, but its declared companion .machine_readable/deployment.a2ml still sets update-policy = "auto-update-registry" at line 60. Any tooling consuming the machine-readable topology will therefore report or act on the obsolete rollout policy rather than this containment configuration; update the companion file in the same change as required by the synchronization note at the top of this document.

P2 Badge Stop an in-flight auto-update before recording the image

If the daily timer has already fired when this step runs, disable --now stops the specified timer but does not stop the separately activated podman-auto-update.service; the systemctl documentation defines --now as stopping the units being disabled, while the Podman documentation confirms that the timer activates a service which pulls images and restarts units. That service can therefore retag or restart echidna after RUNNING is captured—or after the final check—defeating the freeze during this race; explicitly stop and wait for podman-auto-update.service before inspecting the image.
