Starts the web page for the PyHC 2027 Winter School (January 5–8, 2027, University of Arizona, Tucson — in person and virtual).

Opening as a draft: the page is structurally complete and renders correctly, but several details are still pending, so it isn't ready to publish yet. Tracking it here so there's something reviewable to point people at while the remaining pieces come in.

What this adds

  • _pages/meetings/winter_schools/winter_school.md — the page itself, served at /winter-school. Modeled on the 2024 Summer School page, keeping the same section order and wording conventions.
  • img/page_images/winter-school.jpg — banner image.
  • _pages/meetings/summer_schools/summer_schools.md — adds the Winter School under Upcoming, at the top of that page.

Note the Winter School lives under the existing Summer Schools page rather than getting its own subpage, and the URL is /winter-school rather than /winter-school-27 — if there's ever a second one, we can start appending the year then.

Filled in so far

  • Dates, location, format (in person + virtual), and the free-to-attend policy
  • Venue — Student Union Memorial Center, 1303 E University Blvd
  • Hotel — room block at the Graduate by Hilton Tucson, booking link included, cut-off December 7th, 2026; under a 10-minute walk from the venue
  • Travel stipends — application form linked
  • Agenda — embedded live from the planning spreadsheet, so it updates on the page as the sheet is edited

Still outstanding

Each of these is marked with a TODO comment in the source:

  • Registration form link and deadline
  • Travel stipend deadline, award amounts, and any eligibility restrictions
  • Poster abstract form and deadline
  • Hotel room block rate (and parking cost, if any)
  • Specific room number(s) at the Student Union
  • Campus parking, shuttle, and airport transit details
  • Create the heliophysicsPy/winter-school repo — the Materials section links to it and it doesn't exist yet
  • Sponsor logos and award numbers
  • Decide whether to keep the sentence explaining the winter (rather than summer) timing

Two things worth a second opinion

  1. Travel stipend scoring criteria. The page states applications will be scored on need, career stage, and equity — carried forward from how 2024 worked. This hasn't been confirmed as 2027 committee policy, so it should either be confirmed or softened before publishing.
  2. Eligibility. 2024's NSF travel funding was restricted to US citizens and lawful permanent residents. If similar restrictions apply in 2027, that should be stated before the application form circulates widely, since it affects who should apply.

Separately, in the agenda spreadsheet

Not blocking this PR, but these show through to the page via the live embed:

  • The first row still reads "Introductions, welcome, summer school goals" — leftover from the 2024 template
  • HelioCloud Overview and AstroPy still list ??? as presenter

Adds an initial web page for the 2027 Winter School, taking place
5-8 January 2027 at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ, both
in person and virtually.

Structured after the 2024 Summer School page, keeping the same
sections. Confirmed details (dates, venue, free admission, in-person
plus virtual) are filled in; everything still being planned is marked
TBD with an HTML comment noting what's needed. Placeholders cover
registration, travel support, poster abstracts, hotel, the specific
venue room, transportation, and sponsors.

The agenda spreadsheet is embedded via Google's htmlembed endpoint
rather than the pubhtml URL used in 2024, since the sheet is
link-shared but not published to web.

Also links the Winter School from the Upcoming section of the
Summer Schools page.

Venue confirmed as the Student Union Memorial Center (1303 E University
Blvd); room numbers still TBD. Hotel room block at the Graduate by Hilton
Tucson with a 12/7/2026 booking cut-off. Travel stipend application form
is now live.
