## Importing opportunities

*Opportunities → Import from RFA* (or *New → Opportunity from an RFA*) accepts a link, an announcement number, an uploaded file or pasted text. Nothing is saved until you review the form and click Save. Several sources are combined, and each field keeps the most reliable value:

1. **Grants.gov** (public API, no key needed) for federal announcement numbers: agency, title, close date, award ceiling, expected awards, eligibility and the assistance listing. NIH numbers also fetch the full NIH Guide notice.
2. **Labeled fields** in the announcement text, tuned for NIH Guide notices, NSF solicitations and common foundation layouts. NIH "Standard dates apply" notices get the next standard cycle for the activity code, marked for checking.
3. **Claude (optional)** reads the whole announcement as well, which helps most with free-form foundation pages. Set `ANTHROPIC_API_KEY` in `.env` to enable it; `OPPORTUNITY_AI_MODEL` picks the model. Only the announcement is sent to the Anthropic API, never your applications or documents. Each import is one API call, billed to your key by length, so a long NIH notice costs more than a one-page foundation call.

The review form highlights every auto-filled field and lists where each value came from, with low-confidence values marked *check*. A funder that matches one in your list (by website or name) is selected; otherwise you are told to add it. Importing an announcement you already track shows a warning with a link to the existing record. Program contacts and key requirements go into Notes, and extras such as the assistance listing or clinical-trial status become custom fields.

Some sites block automated reading or build their pages with JavaScript. If a link fails, upload the PDF or paste the page text. Links to private or internal network addresses are refused.

## Backups and restore

Backups run nightly at `BACKUP_HOUR` into `BACKUP_DIR` (default `./backups`). Copy that folder somewhere off the machine, such as institutional storage.
