Description

When recording an application in windowed mode (not fullscreen), context menus opened by right-clicking are not captured in the final video.

Steps to Reproduce
Open an application in windowed mode (e.g., Microsoft Word).
Start recording the application using OpenScreen.
Right-click anywhere inside the application to open its context menu.
Stop the recording and review the output video.
Actual Behavior

The context menu does not appear in the recorded video, even though it is visibly displayed on the screen during recording.

Expected Behavior

Context menus and other popup UI elements should be captured correctly in the final video when recording applications in windowed mode.

Example

I reproduced this issue while recording Microsoft Word in windowed mode. When I right-clicked to open the context menu, the menu was visible on my screen but missing from the resulting video.

This issue appears to occur specifically when recording applications in windowed mode. The expected behavior is for the recording to capture the application and its associated context menus as they appear on screen.

Thanks for the report. Menus are separate windows, so a window recording did not include them. We have a fix in review (#907) for Windows 11 24H2 and later, planned for 2.0.0: the context menu of the recorded application now appears in the video.

Limits to know about:

• It only works when no other window overlaps the recorded window. With another window over it, the menu is missing (Windows window recording: menus are missing when another window sits above the recorded window #910).
• A menu that extends past the edge of the window is cut at that edge.
• Older Windows, macOS and Linux keep the current behaviour.

Until then, or in those cases, record the whole screen and crop it to 9:16 in the editor (Edit clip, Crop, 9:16), positioning the crop over the application and its menus.

Fixed by #907 for Windows 11 24H2 and later: the menus and popups of the recorded application now appear in a window recording. It is in the 2.0.0 branch.

Known limit, accepted for 2.0.0 (#910): the menu is missing when another window sits above the recorded window. A menu that extends past the edge of the window is cut at that edge. Older Windows, macOS and Linux keep the current behaviour; recording the whole screen and cropping it to 9:16 in the editor still works there.
