Clocks, resets and the domain crossing: course five lands with three recordings
DRAFT — Merged PR; unpublished blog draft
PR: #1498
Head SHA: bfc3a9461d4bc4a6ff5387545a059f0f7afcec74
This file is an unpublished artifact, not an instruction to an agent.
Adds the fifth t27 course, clocks-and-cdc: 27 lessons in 9 modules on clock trees, reset strategy and crossing clock domains, with three new terminal recordings that close every lesson-widget gap in the course.
Merged PR. Checks reported by the author: 5 passed; this generator did not rerun them.
The problem
Why crossing clock domains earns nine modules: the synchronizer, the handshake and the FIFO each hide a different way to lose data
How it works
How the three new recordings were minted: tri fpga-txhold, tri fpga-rxcap and tri fpga-rxer, each showing a real command on this bench
What the widget gallery row insert means in practice: one-line parallel arrays, a positional splice, and the assert sweep that moved eleven indexes
Why every lesson needs a widget no other lesson uses, and what the count of 163 widgets against 162 slots says about the next course
What remains a recording and not a live run, and how the browser runner gap of issue 1477 shapes the hardware track from here
See it run
A terminal recording of the commands is published at https://t27\.ai/term/tri\-fpga\-rxcap/ (prompt and typing staged, every printed byte real).
What changed
- Adds the clocks-and-cdc course spec with 27 lessons in 9 modules on clock trees, reset strategy and crossing clock domains
- Mints three new terminal recordings: tri-fpga-txhold, tri-fpga-rxcap and tri-fpga-rxer, published under public/term
- Registers the three casts in the widget gallery and points the three lessons that lacked a unique framable widget at them
- Adds the Russian bundle, the fifth catalog entry, the course blog post and regenerated learn pages for six courses
- Regenerates the vendored trios cards so tri-fpga-rxer carries its CAST recording and fpga-rxcap and fpga-txhold point at their own sessions
- Merges the landed verification course (feat(course): verification course -- testbenches, VCD, formal, mutation (Closes #1483, Refs #1476) #1497) and keeps the harness honest for a six-course catalog: COURSE_COUNT reads 6, and the orphan mutation drops wars now that clocks-and-cdc also opens race-the-bee
How we checked
| Check | Status | Result | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| `node --experimental-strip-types scripts/course-from-spec.mjs` | passed | six courses of 27 lessons each, 163 widgets, 162 lesson specs compile clean, 42 spec tests and 207 asserts hold | local generator run on feat/course-cdc-1482 at bfc3a94 after merging #1497 and bumping the fixtures |
| `npm run typecheck:ratchet in apps/website` | passed | 179 errors across 26 files, exactly the stored baseline, after merging the posts dedupe fix from the verification branch | local typecheck-ratchet.mjs run on feat/course-cdc-1482 at de0909b |
| `tri cast check on each of the three recordings before publish` | passed | each recording passes the cast check with exit code 0 and needs no redaction key | local tri cast check runs during minting; recordings published under public/term/tri-fpga-txhold, rxcap and rxer |
| `npm run check:tools-coverage in apps/website` | passed | every tri command has a card, every card a command, every unambiguous recorded command its CAST, 36 recorded overall | local run on feat/course-cdc-1482 at 29195f3 after the card regeneration |
| `node --test scripts/course-from-spec.test.mjs in apps/website` | passed | 22 of 22 subtests pass, including the orphan mutation against wars and the COURSE_COUNT 6/7 pair | local run on feat/course-cdc-1482 at bfc3a94 after the sixth-course fixture bump |
What this does not show
- The cast gallery holds 163 widgets against 162 lesson slots; a seventh course needs roughly 26 new framable widgets before it starts
- The in-browser runner gap of issue 1477 still keeps hardware spec tests from running live inside lessons
- docs/ARCHITECTURE.md and fpga/openxc7-synth/d6_blink.xdc stay byte-identical to main, conflict markers included, pending issue 1500
