Summary

Files uploaded through the ftrack.server accessor that are large enough are now split into parts and uploaded concurrently. Small files still use a single PUT, so their behaviour does not change.

Changes

  • Session: get_upload_metadata accepts an optional parts argument, which is sent only for multipart uploads. New complete_multipart_upload. Both are called only from the caller's thread.
  • ftrack_api/_uploader.py (new, private):
    • Part size follows the JS client's rule (8 MB to 128 MB). If a file would split into 2 parts or fewer, it uses a single PUT.
    • ThreadPoolExecutor with 6 workers by default, configurable through FTRACK_API_UPLOAD_MAX_CONCURRENCY.
    • Each worker has its own requests.Session and uses session.request_timeout.
    • All workers read from one shared temporary file, with a lock around each read.
  • ServerFile._write: uploads parts concurrently when the server returns part URLs, then calls complete. Otherwise it falls back to the existing single PUT. Errors are wrapped as AccessorOperationFailedError.
  • Type stubs updated (_uploader.pyi, session.pyi).

Tests

  • test/unit/test_uploader.py
  • test/unit/accessor/test_server.py (multipart and single-PUT paths)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added multipart uploads for large files, with concurrent part processing and automatic retries for temporary network or server errors.
    • Added support for completing multipart uploads through the session API.
    • Large files now fall back to single-upload handling when multipart uploads are unavailable or unsupported.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Upload failures now cancel remaining pending work and prevent incomplete multipart uploads.
    • Oversized files are rejected before upload begins.

Large files written through the server accessor are split into parts
and uploaded concurrently (ThreadPoolExecutor, one requests.Session per
worker, default 6 workers via FTRACK_API_UPLOAD_MAX_CONCURRENCY).
Session.get_upload_metadata accepts parts; adds
Session.complete_multipart_upload. Small files keep the single PUT.

📝 Walkthrough

The server accessor now supports multipart uploads for large files. New session operations provide multipart metadata and completion. A concurrent uploader sends parts, retries selected failures, and returns part metadata. The accessor falls back to a checksum-based single PUT when multipart metadata is unavailable.

Changes: Multipart Upload

Layer / File(s) Summary
Multipart upload session contract
source/ftrack_api/session.py, source/ftrack_api/session.pyi
Session.get_upload_metadata accepts an optional part count. Session.complete_multipart_upload submits the upload ID and ordered part metadata.
Concurrent multipart uploader
source/ftrack_api/_uploader.py, source/ftrack_api/_uploader.pyi, test/unit/test_uploader.py, AGENTS.md
The uploader selects chunk sizes, uploads parts concurrently, retries selected failures, and returns ordered part metadata. Tests cover boundaries, retries, ETags, and cancellation. The module list documents the uploader.
Server accessor multipart integration
source/ftrack_api/accessor/server.py, test/unit/accessor/test_server.py
ServerFile._write uses multipart upload when metadata is available and otherwise uses a checksum-based single PUT. Tests cover successful completion, fallback, part failure, and oversized files.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to a6694

Multipart retries may expose bearer upload URLs in logs, while malformed concurrency settings can break accessor imports or multipart uploads; resolve or explicitly accept these risks before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to a6694

Multipart retry warnings can disclose signed part-upload URLs to log readers, potentially exposing temporary write authority over an active upload. Concurrent transfers have useful isolation and cancellation controls, but server-side cleanup and recovery guarantees remain unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: The new multipart retry loop sends unredacted HTTPError text to warning logs. Requests includes the request URL in 429 and 5xx errors, exposing signed part-upload capabilities even when a later retry succeeds. A reader of those logs may reuse the capability while the upload and signature remain valid; broader storage or API authority is not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated disclosure boundary is between an upload operation and readers of its application logs. The exposed capability concerns an individual signed part-upload URL, not a general ftrack credential. Reuse depends on signature validity and remote upload state; tenant-wide or bucket-wide access was not demonstrated.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — A retryable 429 or 5xx response causes raise_for_status to produce an exception containing the full URL, which the retry loop formats into a warning without redaction. Unlike the base's propagated single-PUT failure, this warning is emitted during recoverable attempts and can remain in logs after successful upload. This URL formatting was verified in the inspection environment's Requests implementation; deployed dependency versions and log access policies were not supplied.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The client trusts the authenticated server's upload identifiers, part numbers, and transfer destinations. Completion submits both component and upload identifiers through the authenticated API. Enforcement that those identifiers belong to the caller and to each other remains a server responsibility whose implementation was unavailable.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Local cancellation does not establish remote multipart cleanup. A failed close leaves the file open, and another close re-enters metadata acquisition without retaining the previous upload identifier. The inspected client issues no remote abort or completion reconciliation. Whether this leaves staged data or makes ambiguous completion unsafe depends on unavailable server cleanup and idempotency guarantees; indefinite retention or resource exhaustion was not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use structured retry diagnostics containing part number, attempt, and error category or status, rather than raw exception text that may contain signed URLs.
  • proposed — Establish explicit server guarantees for incomplete-upload expiry, cleanup ownership, and completion idempotency. Where supported, retain enough upload identity to abort abandoned attempts or reconcile an uncertain completion before allocating another upload.

Confirm that failed multipart uploads get aborted somewhere.

When upload_parts or complete_multipart_upload raises, the server-side multipart upload for metadata["upload_id"] is left open. The client has no abort operation. On S3-compatible storage, the uploaded parts of an incomplete multipart upload stay stored and are billed until something aborts the upload or a lifecycle rule removes it. Confirm that the server aborts these uploads or that the bucket has an AbortIncompleteMultipartUpload lifecycle rule. If neither is true, add an abort operation and call it from the failure branch.

Keep the multipart unit test independent of server configuration.

When the server does not support multipart uploads, this test takes the single-PUT path and fails its completion assertion. Move the live round-trip to integration coverage. Mock the external upload operations in the unit test. This concern was raised in the previous review; the part-failure test now stubs metadata, but this test still uses the live server.

As per coding guidelines, “Mock external dependencies (network, filesystem) in unit tests.”
