Re-opening of #128 (closed by history rewrite to fix Co-Authored-By trailers).

Adds a complete ui-design workflow to the agentic SDLC pipeline, sitting between ux-design and ui-implement.

Pipeline Position

prd → design → ux-design → ui-design → ui-implement

What It Does

Takes a [UI] Jira story + optional UX handoff artifact and produces:

  1. ui-design.md — component decomposition, hook design, state management, route structure, data flow mapping, persona-aware decomposition, accessibility, testing strategy
  2. API findings — gaps between UI data needs and available backend endpoints
  3. [DEV] Jira stories for API gaps (via /sync)

Phases

Phase Command Description
Ingest /ui-design:ingest Load [UI] story, UX handoff, PRD, design doc, explore codebase
Plan /ui-design:plan Component decomposition → ui-design.md
Review API /ui-design:review-api Deep API surface review → gap findings
Revise /ui-design:revise Incorporate feedback
Publish /ui-design:publish Push to docs repo, create PR
Respond /ui-design:respond Address PR review comments
Sync /ui-design:sync Manifest-based [DEV] story sync to Jira

Key Design Decisions

  • Uses demand-load phase routing (dispatch.md + completion.md) for token efficiency
  • UX handoff is optional — supports purely technical [UI] stories
  • API findings live inline in ui-design.md by default; overflow to separate api-findings.md at ~200 lines
  • Sync follows design workflow's manifest model (schema v2, content hashes, dry-run first)
  • Persona-aware decomposition: shared vs persona-specific components, permission gates, portal targeting

Continuation from PR #128

This PR contains the same ui-design workflow from #128, with all CodeRabbit review feedback addressed across multiple rounds. PR #128 was auto-closed by GitHub when the branch history was rewritten to fix attribution trailers — the rewrite made the branch incompatible. This PR re-opens the work on a rebased branch with clean history.

Summary

  • Added the ui-design package with seven commands and workflow skills for ingest, planning, API review, revision, publication, reviewer responses, and synchronization.
  • Ingest accepts Jira [UI] stories or non-Jira workspace inputs. It can use optional UX handoff artifacts and produces a sourced UI design document and API-gap findings.
  • /sync validates findings and the manifest. It previews Jira changes and requires approval before creating, updating, closing, or reopening [DEV] stories.
  • Added guidelines for evidence-based design, accessibility, testing, scope control, and safe publishing and synchronization.
  • Updated repository documentation and version metadata for bugfix, design, e2e, implement, prd, sizing, and skills/report-bug. The supplied changes describe these as version-only bumps.

Shared resources and conventions

  • Updated _shared/ provenance schemas, recipes, and scripts for ui-design. The changes add workflow and phase tracking, tracked-origin handling, and provenance regression tests.
  • Added validation for incomplete Jira issue responses in _shared/scripts/fetch-issue.py.
  • Added ui-design /sync to the documented Jira write operations that require explicit approval.

Validation status

Test execution results were not provided in the supplied change summary.

New workflow in the prd → design → ux-design → ui-design pipeline that
takes a [UI] Jira story and UX handoff artifact, produces a component
decomposition with hook design, state management, route structure, and
data flow mapping, reviews the API surface for gaps, and syncs [DEV]
stories for backend work to Jira.

Seven phases: /ingest, /plan, /review-api, /revise, /publish, /respond,
/sync. Follows canonical workflow patterns from design/ and ux-design/
including phase-override-resolution, provenance capture, manifest-based
Jira sync with content hashes, and docs-repo publishing.

Split the monolithic controller into three focused files following the
implement/e2e pattern:

- dispatch.md — lightweight phase router that handles override resolution,
  execution, and completion routing
- completion.md — per-phase next-step recommendations (extracted from
the old controller's Recommending Next Steps section)
- controller.md — slimmed to discovery and ambiguous-input routing only

All 7 commands now point to dispatch.md instead of controller.md. All 7
phase skills end with "return to the invoking workflow router" instead of
"re-read the controller".

Assisted-by: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
1. AGENTS.md: add ui-design /sync to Jira writes line
2. AGENTS.md: add ui-design/ to the repo directory tree (alphabetical)
3. dispatch.md: add GetDynamicTools guard for ingest and MCP tool
   availability guidance (matching implement pattern)
4. dispatch.md: add legacy completion fallback and controller-return
normalization paragraphs for project override compatibility
5. 03-review-api.md: add provenance capture step (Step 7) since this
   phase mutates 02-ui-design.md

Assisted-by: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
29 issues fixed across 11 files:

guidelines.md: Remove duplicated phase-transition rule (authoritative
  copy lives in controller.md)

README.md: Align handoff artifact filename to 02-ui-design.md, add docs
repo prerequisite, use namespaced /ui-design:* commands throughout

SKILL.md: Add compact seven-phase index to entry point

01-ingest.md: Support non-Jira context identifiers, fix find command
grouping for -type d, reject empty Jira responses before compilation

02-plan.md: Stop immediately on missing 01-context.md, skip UX handoff
read when "Not available", replace placeholder language with
  pending-findings state

03-review-api.md: Strengthen prerequisite handling to stop on missing
artifacts, add provenance footer for 03-api-findings.md, remove
independent phase-selection recommendation (defer to completion.md)

04-revise.md: Add prerequisite validation, provenance for api-findings,
report data flow changes without recommending phases directly

05-publish.md: Fix find grouping, persist target_directory in metadata,
conditional files array, note provenance.py extension requirement

06-respond.md: Use paginated API queries with thread IDs, --body-file
for shell safety, push before posting comments, add stable identifiers
  to response log

07-sync.md: Add stable gap_id matching, empty-findings guard, closure
hash preservation policy, status transition constraints, remove
create-anyway duplicate option, escape JQL with exact gap_id query,
tracked state for low-severity gaps, resolve pr_url from metadata

Assisted-by: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Replace /tmp/ paths with .artifacts/ paths in 06-respond.md
- Fix step numbering gap (6→8→9 → 6→7→8) in 06-respond.md
- Convert lettered sub-step labels to numbered (5a→5.1) in 01-ingest.md
- Add consistent HAS_HANDOFF sentinel for absent UX handoff in 02-plan.md
- Persist response results with post outcome tracking in 06-respond.md
- Add Jira availability prerequisite check in 07-sync.md
- Add close comment and closed_at timestamp for resolved gaps in 07-sync.md
- Unify workspace identifier ({workspace-id}) in controller.md

Assisted-by: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Fix shell interpolation in respond skill by replacing echo with heredoc
using a quoted delimiter. Add root review-comment ID resolution so the
GitHub /replies endpoint receives the top-level comment ID when replying
to nested comments. Persist each response log entry immediately after
posting to prevent reposting on interrupted runs. Standardize artifact
path references to use {workspace-id} consistently across controller,
ingest, and plan skills. Route non-Jira input through /ingest before
/plan so 01-context.md is compiled before the plan phase runs.

Assisted-by: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Validate that the Jira API response contains a non-empty key and fields
object before building output. A successful HTTP 200 can still return
incomplete data due to permission filters or API changes — detect this
early so calling skills do not silently write artifacts with empty fields.

Register ui-design in WORKFLOW_DOCS with document 02-ui-design.md, add
plan to AUTHORING_PHASES and CLI phase choices since the ui-design
workflow captures provenance during the plan phase. Update both recipe
files and the schema to list ui-design as a valid workflow choice.

Assisted-by: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
In 07-sync.md, check each gap row for a resolved marker (status column
value of "resolved" or "fixed") before active-gap matching, routing
resolved-marker rows to the Resolved bucket using the same close
workflow as absent gaps.

In controller.md, validate that non-Jira workspace identifiers are safe
directory names: alphanumeric, hyphens, and underscores only, 3-50
characters, rejecting path separators and special characters.

Assisted-by: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- README: document non-Jira entry path in inputs table and typical flow
- 01-ingest: add workspace-id validation (3-50 chars, alphanum/hyphens/underscores) for non-Jira path
- 02-plan: replace literal {Placeholder} template markers with concrete examples
- 05-publish: use relative paths for provenance references, note ui-design mapping is pre-configured
- 06-respond: define thread_id as root_comment_id, add GraphQL API for review thread resolution
- 06-respond: persistence ordering already correct (6d appends per-response)
- 07-sync: validate manifest contents (stop on invalid JSON/schema)
- 07-sync: add zero-gap guard when findings section is non-empty but yields no gaps
- 07-sync: use content-based hash for gap_id stability instead of title slug
- 07-sync: use HTML comment marker for exact JQL match instead of fuzzy description search
- 07-sync: require publish-metadata.json on update path (not just create)
- 07-sync: remove duplicate-creation override option, only allow skip or stop

Assisted-by: chai-bot
1. Make gap_id producer-owned: /review-api emits gap_id per gap row
   using SHA-256(category|data_element|endpoint); /sync reads it
verbatim from findings instead of re-deriving.

2. Handle multiple duplicate matches: when JQL returns multiple
matching issues, list ALL with key + summary and require user
selection instead of binding to an arbitrary single match.

3. Reset synced_status on reopen: after reopening a closed Jira
story, set synced_status back to "active" to prevent the next
sync from attempting to reopen it again.

4. Define canonical content_hash payload: explicitly specify sorted
JSON of {affected_components, category, current_state, severity,
   suggested_approach, ui_need, whats_missing} — matches exactly
what gets rendered into the Jira description.

5. Integrate tracked state: route low-severity gaps to "tracked"
bucket (manifest entry, no Jira story); add promotion check in
Step 4 to create Jira stories when severity increases.

6. Complete non-Jira path: add context-path and description to
README inputs table; add workspace-id directory collision check
in ingest with user confirmation prompt.

7. Strengthen pr_url validation: reject null, empty string, and
non-https values in both 4a (create) and 4b (update) passes.

8. Fix JQL exact-phrase syntax: use escaped inner quotes
   ("\"gap_id: {jql_escaped_gap_id}\"") since Jira's ~ operator
does not index HTML punctuation characters.

Assisted-by: chai-bot
Fix pr_url validation in 07-sync.md (Steps 4a and 4b) to require a
parseable HTTPS URL with a non-empty host and at least one path
segment. Values like `https://`, `https://placeholder`, or URLs
without a path after the host are now rejected.

Fix non-Jira collision check in 01-ingest.md to preserve existing
phase artifacts when the user confirms workspace reuse. Only
01-context.md is overwritten (regenerated by ingest); all other
artifacts (02-ui-design.md, 03-api-findings.md, sync-manifest.json,
etc.) are explicitly preserved.

Assisted-by: chai-bot
Assisted-by: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
In 07-sync.md, the retry-on-failure path for story creation now
re-runs the JQL duplicate check before retrying. If Jira committed
the issue but returned a timeout, the re-check finds the existing
story and treats it as a successful create instead of producing a
duplicate.

In 06-respond.md, replace the broad `git add "{target_directory}/"`
with explicit file paths — only `ui-design.md` and `api-findings.md`
are staged, preventing unintended files in the target directory from
being committed.

The version bump in skills/report-bug/SKILL.md from 0.1.0 to 0.1.1
was not reflected in the test assertions that check the provenance
footer string. Update all 4 hardcoded version references in
test_render_issue.py to match.

Assisted-by: chai-bot
…eview-api paths

1. provenance.py origin_untracked(): check against AUTHORING_PHASES
instead of hardcoding "draft" as the only valid first phase.
2. capture-provenance-event.md: update PHASE contract to include
plan and review-api alongside draft, revise, respond.
3. 01-ingest.md: add no-evidence stop gate after codebase exploration
   — stop if no UI-ARCHITECTURE.md, component dirs, or API types found.
4. 03-review-api.md: add "absolute source-repo path to" qualifier on
the api-findings.md provenance TARGET_FILE, matching the main doc.
5. 03-review-api.md: replace all {issue-key} with {workspace-id} to
   match the controller's canonical placeholder.

Also adds review-api to provenance.py --phase CLI choices so the
capture command accepts PHASE=review-api.

Assisted-by: chai-bot
…find placeholder, GraphQL derivation

- 04-revise: add explicit user approval gate between Step 3 and Step 4
- 05-publish: sanitize embedded credentials from docs_repo_remote before
  writing to config.json
- 05-publish: resolve {base_branch} via symbolic-ref early in the flow
(new Step 3) with fallback to main
- 05-publish: replace undefined {feature-key} with {workspace-id} in
  find command
- 06-respond: add owner/repo derivation from upstream_repo before
  GraphQL query

Assisted-by: chai-bot
… duplicate wording

1. 06-respond.md Step 6: add conditional to skip push confirmation when
all responses have Document change: None, allowing clarification-only
responses to post without requiring a document commit.

2. 06-respond.md Step 6a: add fallback instruction to use the agent's
file-writing tool when response text contains a line matching the
   heredoc delimiter.

3. 06-respond.md Step 6d: capture the API-returned comment ID in the
   response log for cross-referencing.

4. 07-sync.md: correct "matching summary" to "matching gap_id marker"
in the duplicate-check critical rule, matching the actual JQL-based
   implementation in Step 4a.

Assisted-by: chai-bot
…spatch gate

1. 07-sync.md: replace all {issue-key} with {workspace-id} to match
   the controller's canonical identifier contract.

2. 07-sync.md: add pr_url to the canonical content_hash payload so
description updates are detected when the design PR link changes
   after a new /publish cycle.

3. 07-sync.md: allow content_hash refresh for tracked entries that
change but stay low-severity; in Step 4c, check for jira_key
presence before attempting Jira comment/transition — tracked entries
   route to manifest-only removal instead.

4. 07-sync.md: load pr_url from publish-metadata.json at the start of
Step 4 (before any sub-step) so Step 4c closure comments can
interpolate {pr_url} on resolve-only runs; simplify 4a/4b to
   reference the already-loaded value.

5. completion.md: expand sync outcome reporting to cover three
scenarios — stories synced, tracked-only/nothing-to-do, and errors.

6. controller.md: change "spawning the next phase" to "the current
phase" to eliminate contradiction with the "Never auto-advance" rule.

7. dispatch.md: make Jira tool gate conditional — only require Jira
tools for /ingest when the workspace was initialized with a Jira
issue key; add /sync to the Jira-requiring list.

Assisted-by: chai-bot
- Fix origin_untracked to use ORIGIN_TRACKED_PHASES (draft/plan only)
instead of AUTHORING_PHASES, restoring correct untracked-origin
detection for respond/revise/manual-edit first events (CI issue A)
- 01-ingest: add non-Jira placeholder values for context template and
record search details in no-evidence stop gate with retry option
- 04-revise: replace {issue-key} with {workspace-id} in all artifact
paths and provenance params; add absolute-path instruction to overflow
  artifact reference
- 05-publish: swap Steps 3/4 so UPSTREAM_REMOTE is resolved before base
branch; use {UPSTREAM_REMOTE} in symbolic-ref; validate target dir
candidates contain planning artifacts (prd.md or design.md)
- 06-respond: validate GraphQL owner/repo are non-empty; skip commit and
provenance for clarification-only responses; add lookup-before-retry
and explicit API response ID capture with "unknown" fallback
- 07-sync: move pr_url loading to Step 1 before content_hash computation
- completion: add retry guidance for sync error case

Assisted-by: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
1. 01-ingest.md: add explicit non-Jira branch in Step 3 — compile
supplied path/description, set Jira-only values to N/A, continue
to Step 4 without calling fetch-issue.py. In Step 5, use only
   {workspace-id} when {feature-key} is unavailable.

2. 05-publish.md: validate base branch exists on upstream remote
with git ls-remote --exit-code after resolving via symbolic-ref.
Stop and ask user for valid branch if validation fails.

3. 05-publish.md: require both prd.md AND design.md in candidate
   directories instead of either one.

4. 06-respond.md: apply document-change check per-response in mixed
batches — responses with changes need commit-before-post, while
   clarification-only responses post immediately.

5. 06-respond.md: persist "unknown" post state before GitHub API
attempt, and add GitHub lookup for matching replies when prior
post state is "unknown" to avoid duplicate posts on retry.

Change: Feature

Suggested labels: workflow-structure, new-workflow, shared-resources, scripts

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to c7838

The new UI design workflow is mostly documentation-driven, but a few instructions should be fixed before merge. Untrusted configuration values can be run as shell code, and a stored path can direct file copies outside the docs repository. Jira ingestion can fail or omit parent and linked-issue context. Jira stories can also keep outdated design references after sync.

Full details: No-Absolute-Paths-In-Skills

Explanation

ui-design/skills/publish.md:74 adds the literal absolute path /dev/null in 2>/dev/null. The path is inside an operational Bash command, not an exempt example. The separate /home/user/... value is an exempt placeholder-user example.

Full details: Step-Sequencing

Explanation

The changed skill files have sequential main-step numbers and no skill exceeds 10 main steps, but ui-design/skills/ingest.md and ui-design/skills/respond.md use non-conditional numbered substeps. In ingest.md, 5.1–5.4 (lines 173–210) and 7.1–7.2 (lines 232–264) are sequential loading and exploration tasks, not conditional branches. In respond.md, 6a–6e (lines 231–357) are sequential response-processing tasks; only part of 6b is conditional. These substeps violate the requirement that substeps represent conditional branches. The review-api 3a–3c and sync 4a–4c groups are conditional work categories and do not present the same issue.

Resolution

Restructure the non-conditional substeps. In ingest.md, fold 5.1–5.4 into the Step 5 procedure and 7.1–7.2 into the Step 7 procedure, or promote them while renumbering all later steps and keeping the skill at 10 or fewer main steps. In respond.md, fold 6a–6e into Step 6 as an ordered procedure, or promote and renumber the later steps while keeping the skill at 10 or fewer main steps. Recheck that every remaining main-step sequence has no gaps or duplicates.

preserve an existing producer-owned `gap_id` when `data_element` or
`endpoint_or_na` is corrected, rather than recomputing it from changed mapping
values. Ensure the stable ID remains embedded in every gap row and detail block
and continues to be reused by `/sync` for matching.

In `@ui-design/skills/05-publish.md`:
- Line 23: Clarify the publish rule near “No modification of content during
publish” to explicitly allow the provenance footer rendered in Step 8 as the
sole publish-time metadata change; keep all other artifact content copied
unchanged.
- Line 113: Use {workspace-id} consistently throughout this publish phase,
replacing every {issue-key} reference in directory searches, artifact paths, and
branch values. Update the target search to match only directories named with
{workspace-id}, preserving the controller’s single workflow identifier.
- Around line 263-264: Reduce the publish phase to ten numbered main steps by
merging “Step 11: Report to User” into Step 10 or the completion guidance in the
publish instructions. Update any references affected by the renumbering while
preserving the reporting behavior.
- Around line 231-248: The publish workflow around gh pr create must populate
publish-metadata.json with actual PR data: query the created PR for its numeric
number, URL, and head SHA, set published_at to the current UTC ISO timestamp,
and preserve typed values for pr_number and cross_repository. Write this output
directly rather than using the shared save-metadata subcommand, while retaining
the existing branch, repository, target directory, and files metadata.

In `@ui-design/skills/06-respond.md`:
- Around line 81-85: Update the GraphQL query’s reviewThreads and nested
comments connections to paginate through all pages using cursors, preserving
complete thread grouping and resolution metadata; alternatively, make the
already-paginated REST results authoritative for comment discovery rather than
relying on the limited GraphQL results.
- Around line 304-316: Remove the duplicate Thread ID field from the response
log template and use root comment ID consistently in the related instructions.
Retain comments.nodes.databaseId and the root_comment_id resolved in Step 6b for
REST replies and retry lookup; do not add reviewThreads.nodes.id unless separate
thread metadata is required.
- Around line 27-34: Update all artifact path references in the /respond
workflow of 06-respond.md to use {workspace-id} instead of {issue-key},
including publish metadata, design files, response logs, cleanup, and provenance
paths. Preserve the existing workflow behavior while ensuring non-Jira runs
resolve artifacts from the workspace-id directory.

In `@ui-design/skills/07-sync.md`:
- Around line 94-115: Update the canonical content_hash payload to include the
trimmed gap title alongside the existing rendered fields, ensuring title-only
edits change the hash. Reuse that same trimmed title when deriving the Jira
summary formatted as “[DEV] {gap title}”, while preserving sorted-key
serialization and SHA-256 hashing.
- Around line 224-240: The /sync workflow must stop before Step 1 when the
workspace is not Jira-backed, rather than proceeding with the “N/A (local
workspace)” parent sentinel. Add an early non-Jira workspace guard to the sync
flow that returns a clear message and preserves the existing Jira configuration
path for Jira workspaces.

ui-design/skills/06-respond.md (1)

315-316: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

The concern is refuted. ui-design/skills/06-respond.md:247-261 explicitly reads pending and unknown, performs the GitHub lookup, and decides whether to skip or retry. Lines 284-292 require replacing the preliminary entry with the final result and response ID. The response-log template lists terminal states, but the intermediate state and its transition are already documented.

1. provenance-schema.md: add review-api to documented AUTHORING_PHASES
   to match capture-provenance-event.md recipe (0.2.1 → 0.2.2)

2. fetch-issue.py:294: validate key is a non-empty string, not just
truthy — rejects integers, booleans, and whitespace-only values

3. ui-design/guidelines.md:60: replace {issue-key} with {workspace-id}
in artifact path contract to match controller.md non-Jira support

4. ui-design/README.md:138: replace {issue-key} with {workspace-id}
   in artifact directory description

Cascade: PATCH-bump ui-design (0.3.0→0.3.1), prd (0.11.4→0.11.5),
design (0.11.4→0.11.5) for shared-file changes.

…laceholders, gap_id preservation

5. SKILL.md: mark UX handoff artifact as optional in description

6. 01-ingest.md: add explicit regex pattern for workspace-id
   validation (^[A-Za-z0-9][A-Za-z0-9_-]{2,49}$) and quote
{workspace-id} in all shell commands to prevent word splitting

7. 02-plan.md: mark Mermaid component tree example as non-copyable
placeholders with explicit instruction to replace all names with
   actual components from codebase exploration

8. 03-review-api.md: add rule to preserve existing gap_id when
correcting a gap entry — recomputing from corrected inputs would
cause /sync to create duplicate Jira issues

Cross-Workflow Data-Flow Analysis: Finding F06 (MEDIUM Severity)

Source: Cross-analysis verification of inter-workflow data flow, verified against current PR revision.

Internal cross-references to 03-api-findings.md break after publish

Severity: MEDIUM — Published documents may contain dead links to the overflow API findings file.

Problem:
The /publish phase (Step 8 in ui-design/skills/publish.md) renames the overflow API findings file during copy:

03-api-findings.md → api-findings-{workspace-id}.md

However, the main UI design document (02-ui-design.md, published as ui-design-{workspace-id}.md) may contain Markdown links or references that point to 03-api-findings.md — the private artifact name. After publishing, these references become dead links because the file in the docs repo is named api-findings-{workspace-id}.md, not 03-api-findings.md.

The same issue applies in the reverse direction: if 03-api-findings.md contains references back to 02-ui-design.md, those would also break (the published name is ui-design-{workspace-id}.md).

Affected location: ui-design/skills/publish.md, Step 8 (Copy and Commit), after the cp commands.

Required change:
After copying the files to the docs repo in Step 8, add a text replacement step that updates internal cross-references within the published files:

  1. In the published ui-design-{workspace-id}.md, replace all occurrences of 03-api-findings.md with api-findings-{workspace-id}.md.
  2. In the published api-findings-{workspace-id}.md (if it exists), replace all occurrences of 02-ui-design.md with ui-design-{workspace-id}.md.

Example implementation (after the cp commands, before git add):

# Update cross-references in published files
sed -i "s|03-api-findings\.md|api-findings-{workspace-id}.md|g" "{target_directory}/ui-design-{workspace-id}.md"
if [ -f "{target_directory}/api-findings-{workspace-id}.md" ]; then
  sed -i "s|02-ui-design\.md|ui-design-{workspace-id}.md|g" "{target_directory}/api-findings-{workspace-id}.md"
fi

Rationale: Published documents in the docs repo should be self-consistent. A reader following a link from the UI design document to the API findings should land on the correct file. The private artifact names (02-ui-design.md, 03-api-findings.md) are internal to the .artifacts/ directory and should not appear in published docs-repo content.

AI-generated. Review for accuracy.

When publish copies artifacts to the docs repo, filenames change
(02-ui-design.md → ui-design-{workspace-id}.md, 03-api-findings.md →
api-findings-{workspace-id}.md). Internal cross-references between
these files become stale after the rename. Add sed commands after the
file copies and before git add to rewrite cross-references to the
published filenames.

F06: Add cross-reference update step in publish.md

Fixed in commit 448571c. When /publish copies artifacts to the docs repo, filenames change (02-ui-design.md → ui-design-{workspace-id}.md, 03-api-findings.md → api-findings-{workspace-id}.md). Internal cross-references between these files become stale after the rename.

Added sed commands in Step 8 after the file copies and provenance footer, before git add:

  • In ui-design-{workspace-id}.md: replaces 03-api-findings.md with api-findings-{workspace-id}.md
  • In api-findings-{workspace-id}.md (if it was copied): replaces 02-ui-design.md with ui-design-{workspace-id}.md

Cross-Workflow Adjudication: Remaining Findings for PR #131 (ui-design)

Source: Counter-review adjudication of cross-workflow analysis, verified with git/shell probes against current PR revision. These findings are validated as real issues requiring fixes.

F05 (HIGH): Sync early exit fires before tracked-gap lifecycle classification

Problem:
In ui-design/skills/sync.md, the "nothing to do" early exit (around line 326) fires BEFORE the tracked-gap lifecycle classification step (lines 410–420). If a sole tracked gap (low severity, not synced to Jira) gets its severity raised to medium/high/critical between sync runs, it fits no initial diff bucket (it's not "new" because it's already in the manifest, and it's not "changed" because the hash check only runs on active items). The early exit fires, and the promotion from tracked→active never happens.

Required change: Move the tracked-gap lifecycle reclassification (promotion from tracked→active when severity increases to medium+, removal when gaps are no longer in api-findings) to BEFORE the "nothing to do" early exit check. After reclassification, promoted gaps should be counted as "new" (need Jira story creation), ensuring the early exit does not fire when there is promotion work to do.

F07 (HIGH): Git publish can commit pre-existing staged work

Problem:
In ui-design/skills/publish.md, git checkout -b "{BRANCH_NAME}" "{UPSTREAM_REMOTE}/{base_branch}" does NOT reset the index. Non-conflicting staged changes from prior work in the docs repo survive the checkout and get included in the subsequent git commit. This was verified with a probe: stage an unrelated file, checkout a fresh branch, git add only the intended file, commit — the commit includes BOTH files.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/publish.md, Step 7 (Prepare the Branch), before the checkout.

Required change: Add an index isolation step before the checkout:

# Ensure clean index before creating the publish branch
if [ -n "$(git -C "{docs_repo_path}" status --porcelain)" ]; then
  git -C "{docs_repo_path}" stash --include-untracked
fi

Or alternatively, after checkout and before the targeted git add, reset the index:

git -C "{docs_repo_path}" reset HEAD

This ensures only the intended files are committed.

F03 (HIGH): Relative docs_repo_path from ux-design not normalized

Problem:
The ux-design workflow (PR #108) may persist docs_repo_path as a relative path (e.g., ../planning-docs) in its configuration. ui-design/skills/ingest.md reads this path and uses it directly. Shell home expansion (~) does not normalize relative paths — ../planning-docs resolved from a different CWD produces a wrong path.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/ingest.md, where docs_repo_path is loaded from configuration.

Required change: After loading docs_repo_path from configuration in the ingest phase, normalize it to an absolute path:

DOCS_REPO_PATH="$(cd "{docs_repo_path}" && pwd)"

This resolves any relative path to absolute regardless of how it was persisted upstream.

F04 (PARTIAL — needs completion): Design Reference derivation produces section-only, not filename

Problem:
The Design Reference template in sync.md now hints at the story-scoped filename ({component section in ui-design-{workspace-id}.md}). However, the actual derivation logic at lines 544–550 produces section-only references like §Component Architecture > HealthBadge — without the filename prefix. PR #137's implement/ingest tries to extract the UI design document filename from the UI Design section field and gets a section path with no filename.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/sync.md, lines 544–550 (Design Reference derivation).

Required change: Update the derivation logic to prepend the published filename to the section reference. The output should be in the form:

ui-design-{workspace-id}.md#§Component Architecture > HealthBadge

or:

{component section reference in ui-design-{workspace-id}.md}

where ui-design-{workspace-id}.md is the actual story-scoped filename, not a template variable. The downstream consumer (#137 implement/ingest) parses this field to locate the correct file.

F06 (PARTIAL — needs completion): /respond recopies without cross-reference rewrite

Problem:
The sed rewrite fix in publish.md Step 8 correctly updates cross-references on initial publication (03-api-findings.md → api-findings-{workspace-id}.md). However, ui-design/skills/respond.md recopies the private artifact files to the docs repo branch when posting reviewer responses — and does NOT apply the same sed rewrite. This restores the broken 03-api-findings.md link in the published document.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/respond.md, wherever files are copied to the docs repo branch.

Required change: Apply the same cross-reference rewrite from publish.md Step 8 after every file copy in respond.md:

sed -i '' "s/03-api-findings\.md/api-findings-{workspace-id}.md/g" "{target_directory}/ui-design-{workspace-id}.md"
if [ -f "{target_directory}/api-findings-{workspace-id}.md" ]; then
  sed -i '' "s/02-ui-design\.md/ui-design-{workspace-id}.md/g" "{target_directory}/api-findings-{workspace-id}.md"
fi

Note: use sed -i '' (with empty string argument) for BSD/macOS portability — see N01 below.

F10 (MEDIUM): Hash excludes Design Reference fields — changes won't trigger sync

Problem:
Lines 536–538 in sync.md explicitly state that Design Reference fields "are not included in the content_hash computation." If PRD requirement IDs or section references change between syncs (e.g., a design revision renumbers requirements), the hash won't change, and sync will report "in sync" even though the Jira story's Design Reference is stale.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/sync.md, hash computation (around lines 530–540).

Required change: Include Design Reference fields (prd_requirements, ui_design_section) in the content_hash computation. These are stable references that should trigger an update when the upstream design changes.

F09 (MEDIUM): Post-publish revise has no update path

Problem:
After /publish creates a docs-repo PR, if the author runs /revise to update the UI design, the local artifacts are updated but the docs-repo PR is not. Re-running /publish fails because the branch already exists. The /respond phase only handles reviewer comments, not author-initiated revisions.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/publish.md and/or revise.md.

Required change: In publish.md, handle the case where the branch already exists:

  • If the branch exists, check it out (don't create a new one)
  • Copy the updated artifacts over the existing files
  • Amend the existing commit or create a new one
  • Force-push to update the existing PR

Alternatively, add a step in revise.md that detects an existing publish-metadata.json and pushes updates directly.

X01 (NEW — MEDIUM): Failed dependency links never reconciled

Problem:
When /sync creates a [DEV] story and the subsequent "blocks" link creation fails (Jira API error, timeout), the manifest records the story as successfully created, but the link is missing. On the next sync run, the manifest shows the story as "in sync" — the failed link is never retried.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/sync.md, link creation and manifest update logic.

Required change: Track link creation status separately in the manifest (e.g., "blocks_link": "created" vs "blocks_link": "failed"). On subsequent syncs, retry failed links before the "nothing to do" check. A story with a failed link should not be considered "in sync."

N01 (NEW — portability): sed -i not portable

Problem:
The cross-reference rewrite in publish.md uses bare sed -i (GNU syntax). On macOS/BSD, sed -i requires an empty string argument: sed -i ''. Without it, sed treats the next argument as a backup suffix and the command fails or produces unexpected results.

Affected locations: ui-design/skills/publish.md Step 8, and respond.md (after F06 fix above).

Required change: Use sed -i '' in all sed in-place edit commands:

sed -i '' 's/03-api-findings\.md/api-findings-{workspace-id}.md/g' "{target_directory}/ui-design-{workspace-id}.md"

Or use a portable alternative:

tmp=$(mktemp)
sed 's/03-api-findings\.md/api-findings-{workspace-id}.md/g' "{file}" > "$tmp" && mv "$tmp" "{file}"

AI-generated. Review for accuracy.

F03 (HIGH): Normalize docs_repo_path to absolute in ingest.md Step 4
using `$(cd "${docs_repo_path}" && pwd)` after loading from config.

F04 (PARTIAL): Prepend published filename to section references in
sync.md Design Reference derivation, producing full cross-references
like `ui-design-{workspace-id}.md#§Component Architecture > Name`.

F05 (HIGH): Move tracked-gap lifecycle reclassification (promotion
check) before the "nothing to do" early exit in sync.md so promoted
gaps are not suppressed.

F06 (PARTIAL): Add cross-reference sed rewrite in respond.md Step 5
when copying files to the docs repo branch, matching publish.md Step 8.

F07 (HIGH): Add index isolation in publish.md Step 7 via git stash
before checkout and git reset HEAD after, preventing pre-existing
staged files from leaking into the commit.

F09 (MEDIUM): Handle existing local branch in publish.md Step 7 by
checking out and resetting to upstream base instead of failing.

F10 (MEDIUM): Include prd_requirements and ui_design_section in the
content_hash computation in sync.md; update exclusion note.

X01 (NEW): Track link creation status via blocks_link field in sync
manifest; add pass 4d to retry failed links on subsequent syncs;
update early-exit condition to consider failed links.

N01 (portability): Replace all sed -i with sed -i '' in publish.md
and respond.md for BSD/macOS compatibility.

Cross-Workflow Adjudication: Final Fixes — F04 and F10

Source: Counter-review adjudication, validated against current PR revision. These are the last two unresolved findings.

F04 (MEDIUM — completion): Design Reference derivation must include the published filename

Problem:
The Design Reference template in sync.md correctly shows the expected format: {component section reference in ui-design-{workspace-id}.md}. However, the normative derivation logic (around lines 544–550) still produces section-only references like:

§Component Architecture > HealthBadge

The downstream consumer (PR #137's implement/skills/ingest.md) parses the UI Design section field to extract the filename matching ui-design-*.md. With section-only output, it finds no filename and falls back to a directory search.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/sync.md, the derivation logic that populates the UI Design section field in the Design Reference (around lines 544–550).

Required change:
Update the derivation to append the published filename to the section reference. Change the output format from:

§Component Architecture > HealthBadge

to:

§Component Architecture > HealthBadge in ui-design-{workspace-id}.md

where {workspace-id} is replaced with the actual story key (e.g., EDM-1234). The workspace-id is already available at derivation time — it is the [UI] story's issue key.

Rationale: This eliminates the need for downstream consumers to fall back to directory-pattern search. The Design Reference becomes a self-contained pointer: section path + filename in one field.

F10 (MEDIUM): Add Design Reference fields to the content hash

Problem:
The content hash computation in sync.md explicitly excludes Design Reference fields (lines 536–538 state they "are not included in the content_hash computation"). The current hash covers: {affected_components, category, current_state, pr_url, severity, suggested_approach, title, ui_need, whats_missing}.

This means if a design revision changes the PRD requirement mappings (e.g., renumbers FR-3 to FR-7) or the component section reference changes (e.g., component renamed from HealthBadge to StatusIndicator), the hash won't change. Sync will report "in sync" even though the Jira story's Design Reference is stale.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/sync.md, the content hash computation (around lines 530–540) and the exclusion note at lines 536–538.

Required changes:

  1. Remove the exclusion note at lines 536–538 that states Design Reference fields are not included.

  2. Add prd_requirements and ui_design_section to the hash input field list. The updated list should be:

{affected_components, category, current_state, prd_requirements,
pr_url, severity, suggested_approach, title, ui_design_section,
ui_need, whats_missing}

Rationale: These fields are stable references that should trigger a Jira update when the upstream design changes. The cost is minimal (two more strings in a SHA-256 input), and it prevents silent staleness in the Design Reference.

Cross-Workflow Adjudication: Remaining Findings for PR #131 (ui-design) — Round 3

Source: Counter-review adjudication. These are the remaining accepted findings that have not yet been addressed.

F02 (HIGH — completion): Ingest script path uses CWD-relative resolution

Problem:
ui-design/skills/ingest.md uses ../../_shared/scripts/fetch-issue.py which resolves relative to the shell's CWD or dirname "$0" (which in agent-executed context resolves to the bash launcher, not the markdown file). The publish phase correctly uses absolute paths (${HOME}/.ai-workflows/_shared/scripts/...).

Affected location: ui-design/skills/ingest.md, all references to ../../_shared/scripts/.

Required change: Replace relative script paths with absolute paths using the same pattern as publish:

# Instead of:
python3 "../../_shared/scripts/fetch-issue.py" get "{workspace-id}" ...

# Use:
python3 "${HOME}/.ai-workflows/_shared/scripts/fetch-issue.py" get "{workspace-id}" ...

Apply to all ../../_shared/scripts/ and ../../_shared/recipes/ references in ingest.md (and any other phase files that use relative paths).

N05 (MEDIUM): Handoff freshness gate doesn't enforce readiness

Problem:
When ui-design/ingest loads the UX handoff document, it checks for the file's existence but does not validate that the handoff is in a ready/complete state. A partially-written or draft handoff (e.g., ux-design ran /handoff but the user hasn't reviewed or approved it) could be consumed as if it were final.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/ingest.md, the handoff loading step.

Required change: After locating the handoff file, check for a completeness indicator. Options:

  1. Check for a provenance footer (present only after /publish finalizes the document)
  2. Check for a status: ready or status: published field in the handoff metadata
  3. If no readiness indicator is found, warn the user: "The UX handoff document exists but may not be finalized. Proceed with caution — the UX design may still be in progress."

N07 (MEDIUM): UI Impact and Affected Components lack canonical representation

Problem:
The gap properties ui_need (UI Impact) and affected_components (Affected Components) are free-text strings with no canonical format. Different sync runs or different gaps may format them inconsistently (e.g., "Button component" vs "components/Button" vs "Button"). This makes downstream comparison, deduplication, and hash-based change detection unreliable.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/sync.md, gap property derivation; ui-design/skills/review-api.md, gap discovery.

Required change: Define a canonical format for these fields and normalize them during derivation. For example:

  • affected_components: comma-separated PascalCase component names matching the Component Architecture section headings (e.g., HealthBadge, DeviceList)
  • ui_need: one of a defined set of categories (e.g., loading-state, error-handling, data-display, form-input, navigation) or free-text with a category prefix

Document the canonical format in sync.md near the hash field definitions so it's clear what format the hash expects.

N08 (MEDIUM): Closed+resolved gap story has no explicit lifecycle rule

Problem:
When a [DEV] gap story is both closed AND resolved in Jira (status = Closed, resolution = Done), sync.md has no explicit rule for how to handle it. The "to close" bucket catches stories that are no longer in api-findings, and the "changed" bucket catches content changes, but a story that is resolved upstream (backend work complete) has no explicit state transition in the sync lifecycle.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/sync.md, the manifest lifecycle state machine.

Required change: Add an explicit lifecycle rule for resolved/closed stories:

  • When a manifest entry's Jira story has status = Closed or resolution = Done, mark the manifest entry as synced_status: "resolved".
  • Resolved entries should be excluded from future sync diffs (they are done — no further updates needed).
  • If a resolved story's gap reappears in a later api-findings (regression), reclassify it as "new" to create a fresh story.

N09 (MEDIUM): Overflow→inline transition doesn't retire old findings artifact

Problem:
When api-findings initially overflow into a separate api-findings-{workspace-id}.md file (published to docs repo), and a subsequent sync reduces the findings count so they fit inline in the main ui-design document, the separate api-findings-{workspace-id}.md file is not deleted from the docs repo. It becomes stale and potentially misleading — readers see both the inline findings (current) and the separate file (outdated).

Affected location: ui-design/skills/publish.md and/or respond.md, the file copy step.

Required change: In the publish/respond copy step, after determining whether findings fit inline:

  • If findings now fit inline AND api-findings-{workspace-id}.md exists in the docs repo, delete it:
    git -C "{docs_repo_path}" rm "{target_directory}/api-findings-{workspace-id}.md" 2>/dev/null || true
  • Include this deletion in the same commit as the updated ui-design-{workspace-id}.md.

N10 (MEDIUM — completion): Grandparent Feature fetch is not recursive

Problem:
ui-design/skills/ingest.md uses --parent --parent-fields summary, status, key, parent which fetches the story's immediate parent. When the hierarchy is Story→Epic→Feature (3 levels), the fetch returns the Epic as parent but does not chase to the Feature grandparent. The Feature key is needed for docs-repo directory resolution (features/{FEATURE-KEY}/).

Affected location: ui-design/skills/ingest.md, the Jira fetch command; potentially _shared/scripts/fetch-issue.py.

Required change: After the initial fetch, if the parent's parent field is present (indicating a grandparent exists), make a second fetch to retrieve the grandparent:

If the fetched parent has a `parent` field (e.g., the parent is an
Epic whose parent is a Feature):
1. Extract the grandparent key from the parent's `parent` field.
2. Fetch the grandparent issue to get its key and summary.
3. Use the grandparent (Feature) key for docs-repo directory resolution.

If the parent is already a Feature (no grandparent), use it directly.

Alternatively, modify fetch-issue.py to support a --depth 2 or --recursive-parent flag that chases the parent chain to a configurable depth.

Finding Severity Fix
F02 HIGH All ../../_shared/scripts/ and ../../_shared/recipes/ references replaced with absolute ${HOME}/.ai-workflows/_shared/ paths across ingest.md, plan.md, publish.md, respond.md, review-api.md, revise.md, and dispatch.md

Fresh Review Response: Findings for PR #131 (ui-design)

Source: Fresh review against current PR head 27ac2fb with 2,242 test executions.

This addresses 4 new regressions introduced by our fix commits, 1 worsened finding, and 6 partially-fixed/still-open findings.

X02 (HIGH — NEW REGRESSION): Republish hard-resets branch, destroying reviewer corrections

Problem:
The F09 branch-exists fix introduced a git reset --hard {UPSTREAM}/{base} on the existing branch before re-publishing. This wipes any reviewer corrections, supplemental documents, or other commits that were added directly to the docs-repo PR branch. The intent was to update the branch, not nuke it.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/publish.md, the branch-exists handling path.

Required change: Replace the hard-reset approach with an incremental update:

  1. Checkout the existing branch (not checkout -b, just checkout)
  2. Copy the updated artifacts over the existing files (overwrite, don't reset)
  3. Run the cross-reference sed rewrites
  4. git add the specific changed files
  5. Commit with a message like "Update ui-design artifacts (re-publish)"
  6. Push (regular push, not force-push, unless there's a rebase conflict)

Do NOT git reset --hard or git checkout -B (which also resets). The existing branch content is the base; the new artifacts are layered on top.

X03 (HIGH — NEW REGRESSION): Strict PASS parser rejects the template's own HTML comment

Problem:
The publish gate requires the first non-empty line after ## Result to be exactly PASS. But the review template itself includes an HTML comment (<!-- ... -->) between ## Result and the PASS line. The parser rejects valid, successful reports from its own template.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/publish.md, the result-parsing logic.

Required change: Either:

  1. Preferred: Update the parser to skip HTML comment lines (<!-- ... -->) when looking for the PASS/FAIL verdict after ## Result. This is robust against template variations.
  2. Alternative: Remove the HTML comment from the template so PASS is the first non-empty line after ## Result.

Option 1 is preferred because it's defensive — other phases may also use HTML comments in templates.

X05 (MEDIUM — NEW REGRESSION): Provenance marker mismatch in handoff freshness check

Problem:
The N05 handoff freshness check (added by our fix) searches for <!-- provenance: to detect finalized handoffs. But the actual UX formatter produces <!-- ai-workflow-provenance:{...} -->. The marker string doesn't match, so valid finalized handoffs are flagged as missing provenance.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/ingest.md, the handoff provenance check.

Required change: Change the marker search from:

<!-- provenance:

to:

<!-- ai-workflow-provenance:

This matches the actual output format of the UX workflow's provenance renderer.

N01 (HIGH — WORSENED): sed -i portability swapped platforms

Problem:
Our N01 fix changed sed -i (GNU-only, works on Linux) to sed -i '' (BSD-only, works on macOS). This doesn't fix portability — it just moves the failure from macOS to Linux.

Affected locations: All sed -i '' commands in publish.md and respond.md.

Required change: Replace all sed -i '' commands with a genuinely portable pattern using a temp file:

tmp=$(mktemp)
sed 's/03-api-findings\.md/api-findings-{workspace-id}.md/g' "{file}" > "$tmp" && mv "$tmp" "{file}"

Apply this pattern to every in-place sed edit in publish.md and respond.md. The mktemp + mv approach works on both GNU/Linux and BSD/macOS.

F09 (MEDIUM — STILL OPEN): Post-publish revise route

Problem:
F09 is entangled with X02. The current branch-exists handling hard-resets, which is X02's regression. Once X02 is fixed (incremental update instead of hard-reset), F09 should be resolved as a side effect — the same incremental-update path handles both first-publish and re-publish.

ACTION: Fix X02 first. Then verify F09 is resolved.

N05 (MEDIUM — STILL OPEN): Handoff freshness gate

Problem:
N05 is entangled with X05. The freshness check exists but uses the wrong marker. Once X05 is fixed (correct marker string), N05 should be resolved.

ACTION: Fix X05 first. Then verify N05 is resolved.

N08 (MEDIUM — STILL OPEN): Resolved lifecycle conflicts with duplicate guard

Problem:
The resolved lifecycle rule (Closed/Done → synced_status: "resolved", excluded from diffs, reappearance creates new story) conflicts with the duplicate detection guard. When a resolved gap reappears, the duplicate guard sees the existing manifest entry and flags it as a duplicate, preventing the "create new story" path from executing.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/sync.md, the duplicate detection logic and the resolved entry handling.

Required change: In the duplicate detection logic, exclude entries with synced_status: "resolved" from the duplicate check. A resolved entry is explicitly "done" — a reappearance of the same gap is intentionally treated as a new occurrence, not a duplicate.

N07 (MEDIUM — PARTIALLY FIXED): Table representation still not canonical

Problem:
Detail-level normalization is done (PascalCase components, category-prefixed ui_need), but the table representation (how these fields appear in the Jira issue description's structured table) is not normalized. Different sync runs may format the table rows differently even when the underlying data is the same.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/sync.md, the Jira description template rendering.

Required change: Define a canonical table format in the description template. Ensure the table renderer always produces the same output for the same input — consistent column order, consistent cell formatting, no trailing whitespace differences.

N09 (MEDIUM — PARTIALLY FIXED): Private overflow not retired

Problem:
The published overflow file (api-findings-{workspace-id}.md) is now correctly retired from the docs repo with git rm when findings shrink to inline. But the private overflow file (.artifacts/ui-design/{workspace-id}/03-api-findings.md) is not cleaned up. It lingers in the artifacts directory and may be picked up by a subsequent publish run.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/publish.md and respond.md, after determining findings fit inline.

Required change: When findings shrink to inline, also remove the private overflow file:

rm -f ".artifacts/ui-design/{workspace-id}/03-api-findings.md"

N10 (MEDIUM — PARTIALLY FIXED): Grandparent fetch only works with embedded parent.parent

Problem:
The grandparent fetch (second API call) only works when the parent.parent field is present in the first response. Some Jira configurations return parent as a bare key (issue key string) without a nested parent field, requiring a separate lookup.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/ingest.md, the grandparent resolution logic.

Required change: After the first fetch, if the parent is not a Feature:

  1. Check if parent.parent is present as a nested object — use it directly if so.
  2. If parent is a bare key string (no nested fields), make a second API call to fetch that parent issue to get ITS parent.
  3. If the second-level parent is a Feature, use its key.

This handles both embedded and bare-key parent representations.

X01 (MEDIUM — PARTIALLY FIXED): Adoption/recovery paths not covered

Problem:
New-creation failure retry works (blocks_link tracking + pass 4d). But two other failure paths aren't handled:

  1. Adoption: When sync finds an existing Jira story that matches the gap (same title, same parent), it should adopt it rather than creating a duplicate. Adoption failure isn't tracked or retried.
  2. Recovery: When a link creation fails mid-recovery (story exists but link doesn't), the manifest entry shows blocks_link: "failed" but the recovery path doesn't know the story already exists — it may try to create it again.

Affected location: ui-design/skills/sync.md, the adoption logic and recovery path.

Required change:

  1. Track adoption status in the manifest alongside blocks_link (e.g., adopted: true/false).
  2. In the recovery path, check if the story already exists (by key in manifest) before attempting creation.
  3. Retry adoption failures in the same pass 4d reconciliation loop.

…9, X01)

X02 (HIGH): Replace git reset --hard with incremental checkout in
publish.md Step 7 to preserve reviewer corrections on existing branches.
Also resolves F09 (post-publish revise route).

X03 (HIGH): Add HTML-comment-safe validation gate to publish.md Step 1
that skips <!-- ... --> lines when parsing ## Result verdict.

X05 (MEDIUM): Fix provenance marker mismatch in ingest.md handoff
freshness check — change `<!-- provenance:` to
`<!-- ai-workflow-provenance:` to match actual UX formatter output.
Also resolves N05 (handoff freshness gate).

N01 (HIGH): Replace all sed -i '' (BSD-only) with portable mktemp+mv
pattern in publish.md and respond.md for cross-platform compatibility.

N07 (MEDIUM): Add canonical description rendering rules in sync.md to
ensure consistent Jira descriptions across sync runs.

N08 (MEDIUM): Exclude resolved manifest entries from duplicate guard
in sync.md to prevent blocking new occurrences of previously resolved gaps.

N09 (MEDIUM): Clean up private overflow file
(.artifacts/ui-design/{workspace-id}/03-api-findings.md) in publish.md
and respond.md when findings shrink to inline.

N10 (MEDIUM): Handle bare-key parent in ingest.md grandparent Feature
chase — make second API call when parent.parent is a string, not object.

X01 (MEDIUM): Add adoption tracking (adopted field), failed adoption
retry, and recovery for stories with missing links in sync.md pass 4d.

Holistic UX/UI Workflow Review — PR #131 (ui-design)

Methodology: Two independent reviewer agents (Claude Opus 5 at max effort, GPT-6 Astra at max effort) performed a holistic review of PRs #108, #131, #138, #137 as a system. Findings below are the aggregated and deduplicated results relevant to this PR. This PR had the most findings of the four, reflecting ui-design's central role and complexity.

🔴 Critical

C1 — gap_id and content_hash depend on agent-computed SHA-256
/sync requires the agent to compute SHA-256("{category}|{data_element}|{endpoint}") for gap_id and SHA-256(JSON.stringify(story_fields)) for content_hash. No script or utility is provided — the agent must do this "by hand." SHA-256 output is not deterministic across different agent runs/implementations, so gap_id values will drift, causing duplicate [DEV] stories and breaking idempotent sync.

  • File: ui-design/skills/review-api.md (Step 3), ui-design/skills/sync.md (Step 3)
  • Recommendation: Ship a helper script (like provenance.py) that computes gap_id and content_hash deterministically.
  • Reviewer: Opus (B7)

C2 — Absolute ${HOME}/.ai-workflows/ paths in 10+ places
ui-design references shared recipes and scripts via ${HOME}/.ai-workflows/_shared/… in at least 10 locations. The main branch uses this pattern 0 times out of 58 shared-resource references — it always uses relative paths. This violates the repo's own AGENTS.md "relative paths only" rule and breaks project-scope installations.

  • Files: ui-design/skills/ingest.md, ui-design/skills/plan.md, ui-design/skills/review-api.md, ui-design/skills/sync.md, ui-design/skills/publish.md, ui-design/skills/respond.md, ui-design/skills/revise.md, and others
  • Recommendation: Replace all ${HOME}/.ai-workflows/ with relative ../../_shared/ paths to match the convention on main.
  • Reviewer: Opus (A1)

C3 — Provenance collision with PR #108 (cross-PR)
Both PRs rewrite _shared/scripts/provenance.py and bump shared recipe versions incompatibly. See PR #108 finding C2 for details.

  • Recommendation: Coordinate merge order; rebase the later PR.

🟡 Important

I1 — synced_status enum is self-contradictory
sync.md defines synced_status values as active | closed | tracked, but the prose describes closing stories by setting them to "resolved" (which isn't in the enum). The tracked status is described but never used in any decision branch, creating dead state.

  • File: ui-design/skills/sync.md (Step 2, Step 5)
  • Reviewer: Opus (B9)

I2 — content_hash includes pr_url, making every hash stale after publish
The content_hash formula includes pr_url from publish-metadata.json. Since this changes every time a new PR is opened, all content hashes become stale after /publish, triggering unnecessary Jira updates on the next /sync.

  • File: ui-design/skills/sync.md (Step 3)
  • Reviewer: Opus (B10)

I3 — /sync hard-requires prior /publish
sync.md Step 1 gates on publish-metadata.json existence. But an early-stage workflow where the user wants to file [DEV] stories before the design is fully published is blocked — even though the gap information is already complete in 02-ui-design.md.

  • File: ui-design/skills/sync.md (Step 1)
  • Reviewers: Opus (B11), Astra (C3)

I4 — git stash in /respond is never popped
respond.md Step 2 runs git stash to preserve uncommitted work before switching branches, but the skill never calls git stash pop — the stashed changes are lost.

  • File: ui-design/skills/respond.md (Step 2 vs. Step 6)
  • Reviewer: Opus (B13)

I5 — 01-context.md has no Feature field
The context template captures Epic and Story but not the resolved Feature key. Downstream workflows (publish, sync) need the Feature key to construct the docs-repo path, forcing them to re-derive it each time.

  • File: ui-design/skills/ingest.md (context template)
  • Reviewer: Opus (B12)

I6 — Provenance footer injected into 02-ui-design.md which has no footer section
plan.md calls the add-provenance recipe on 02-ui-design.md, but unlike 05-handoff.md (which has a designated footer area), the ui-design document has no convention for where the footer goes. It may be appended in a place that breaks downstream parsers.

  • File: ui-design/skills/plan.md (Step 7)
  • Reviewer: Opus (B8)

I7 — /sync early-exit bypasses recovery passes
When /sync detects "no new or changed gaps," it exits immediately without checking whether previously filed [DEV] stories that are now resolved should be closed. The close/reopen pass only runs when there are new gaps.

  • File: ui-design/skills/sync.md (Step 4 early exit)
  • Reviewers: Opus (partial), Astra (D1)

I8 — Resolved-gap rows treated ambiguously in close/reopen cycle
If a gap was resolved and its [DEV] story closed, then the same gap reappears in a later /review-api, the manifest row still has the old jira_key but the status was set to closed. The reopen logic path is underspecified — it's unclear whether a new story is created or the old one is reopened.

  • File: ui-design/skills/sync.md (Step 5)
  • Reviewer: Astra (D2)

I9 — API findings overflow contract
When API findings are large, /review-api writes them to a separate 03-api-findings.md file. But the overflow threshold and the file format are not specified — the consumer (PR #137's implement/skills/ingest.md) looks for api-findings-{key}.md in the docs repo but the private artifact uses a different name.

  • Files: ui-design/skills/review-api.md (overflow), implement/skills/ingest.md (consumer)
  • Reviewers: Opus (C2), Astra (C1/C2)

I10 — /respond may commit unrelated staged changes
Same issue as PR #108 I4 — respond.md's commit step can sweep up prior staged files.

  • File: ui-design/skills/respond.md (Step 4)
  • Reviewer: Astra (A2)

I11 — Hierarchy discovery assumes Epic has a parent Feature
ingest.md walks Story → Epic → Feature, but if the Epic has no parent (flat project structure), the resolver fails silently and subsequent publish/sync steps construct broken paths.

  • File: ui-design/skills/ingest.md (Step 2 hierarchy)
  • Reviewer: Astra (B3)

I12 — PR-comment handling reimplemented instead of reusing _shared
respond.md implements its own PR-comment fetch/parse/respond logic rather than using the shared respond recipe pattern from main, creating maintenance drift.

  • File: ui-design/skills/respond.md
  • Reviewer: Opus (A6)

I13 — component.field schema disagreement
plan.md and review-api.md use slightly different structures for component field definitions — plan.md uses { name, type, source } while review-api.md uses { name, type, endpoint, field_path, resolved }. When /review-api updates the plan, it may silently overwrite the schema.

  • File: ui-design/skills/plan.md vs. ui-design/skills/review-api.md
  • Reviewer: Astra (C4)

I14 — Dead validation-report gate in publish.md
publish.md checks for 05-validation-report.md as a gate, but ui-design has no /validate phase and never creates this file. The gate always fails, and the fallback (proceeding without it) makes the check meaningless.

  • File: ui-design/skills/publish.md (Step 1)
  • Reviewer: Opus (A5)

I15 — Tool prerequisites mention non-existent tools
SKILL.md prerequisites list tools/skills that may not exist in the expected location, with no graceful fallback or error message if they're missing.

  • File: ui-design/SKILL.md (prerequisites)
  • Reviewer: Astra (E3)

🔵 Suggestions

S1 — gap_id prefix format could drift
The prefix (first 12 hex chars of SHA-256) is short enough for collisions across a large project; consider using the full hash or a longer prefix.

  • Reviewer: Opus (B15)

S2 — Self-contradictory script reference in sync
A comment in sync.md references _shared/scripts/jira-sync.py which doesn't exist.

  • Reviewer: Opus (B14)

S3 — No templates/ directory
Unlike ux-design and ui-implement, ui-design has no templates/ directory for reusable output structures, even though plan.md produces a complex 10-section document.

  • Reviewer: Opus (A7)

✅ Positive Observations

  • The controller → dispatch → completion three-part orchestration is an excellent context-optimization pattern; demand-loading only the needed phase keeps token usage efficient.
  • The eight-category gap taxonomy with stable gap_id is a strong design for tracking API gaps through the lifecycle.
  • The no-evidence stop gate (refusing to design when no codebase is found) is a genuinely important safety feature.
  • The HAS_HANDOFF fallback allowing ui-design to work without a ux-design handoff makes the workflow flexible.
  • The dry-run + approval gate before any Jira writes is well-designed.

AI-generated. Review for accuracy.

Critical:
- C1: Add compute-hash.py helper script for deterministic gap_id and
content_hash computation (with 15 unit tests), replacing agent-computed
  SHA-256. Referenced from review-api.md and sync.md.
- C2: Replace all 18 absolute ${HOME}/.ai-workflows/_shared/ path
references with relative ../../_shared/ paths across all skill files,
matching the repo convention (AGENTS.md "relative paths only" rule).

Important:
- I1: Clarify synced_status enum with explicit state transition docs
distinguishing "closed" (by sync) from "resolved" (externally).
- I2: Remove pr_url from content_hash payload to prevent stale hashes
  after every /publish cycle.
- I3: Make /sync work without prior /publish by using a placeholder
  pr_url when publish-metadata.json is absent.
- I4: Add git stash pop and branch restoration in publish.md so stashed
docs-repo changes are not lost after publish.
- I5: Add Feature field to 01-context.md template in ingest.md so
downstream phases can resolve the feature key without re-chasing.
- I6: Add provenance footer placement guidance in plan.md.
- I7: Fix early-exit in sync.md to check for failed links/adoptions
before skipping to "nothing to do" — ensures pass 4d recovery runs.
- I10: Add index isolation (git reset HEAD) in respond.md before staging
to prevent unrelated pre-staged files from leaking into commits.
- I11: Handle flat hierarchy in ingest.md when Epic has no parent Feature.
- I14: Remove dead validation-report gate from publish.md (ui-design has
  no /validate phase).

Also fixes force-push command in publish.md (--force-with-lease).

All actionable findings from the holistic UX/UI workflow review have been addressed in commit 0859118.

Critical

Finding Fix
C1 Created ui-design/scripts/compute-hash.py — deterministic gap_id (SHA-256 of category|data_element|endpoint) and content_hash (SHA-256 of sorted JSON). 15 unit tests. review-api.md and sync.md updated to reference the script instead of agent-computed hashes.
C2 Replaced all 18 absolute ${HOME}/.ai-workflows/_shared/ references with relative ../../_shared/ paths across 7 skill files, matching the repo's AGENTS.md convention.
C3 Not addressed — cross-PR provenance collision requires merge-order coordination, not a code fix in this PR.

Important

Finding Fix
I1 synced_status enum clarified with explicit state transition docs distinguishing "closed" (by sync) from "resolved" (externally closed).
I2 Removed pr_url from content_hash payload (with explanatory note) — prevents every hash becoming stale after /publish.
I3 /sync now works without prior /publish — uses placeholder pr_url with user warning.
I4 Added git stash pop + original branch restoration in publish.md.
I5 Added Feature field to 01-context.md template.
I6 Added provenance footer placement guidance in plan.md.
I7 Early-exit now checks for failed links/adoptions before skipping — recovery pass 4d always runs.
I8 Already addressed — closed vs resolved distinction (clarified by I1).
I9 Cross-PR — overflow file naming is a consumer issue in PR #137.
I10 Added index isolation (git reset HEAD) in respond.md.
I11 Flat hierarchy handling — when Epic has no parent Feature, uses Epic key directly.
I12 Deferred — respond recipe extraction is a larger refactor.
I13 Not a conflict — schemas serve different purposes (plan vs review-api).
I14 Removed dead validation-report gate from publish.md.
I15 N/A — no prerequisites section exists in current SKILL.md.

Suggestions

Finding Decision
S1 12-char prefix is sufficient for project-scale gap counts.
S2 jira-sync.py reference already removed in prior fix round.
S3 templates/ directory extraction deferred.

Second-Pass Holistic Review — PR #131 (ui-design)

Round 2: Two independent reviewers (Claude Opus 5 max, GPT-6 Astra max) re-reviewed all four PRs in their updated state, scoped to 🔴 Critical and 🟡 Important findings only. Previously-fixed items were excluded. Findings below are the aggregated, deduplicated results relevant to this PR. This PR has the most findings again, reflecting ui-design's central role and complexity.

🔴 Critical

C1 — Round-1 ${HOME} removal broke every shared-script invocation (cross-PR: also affects #138 and #137)

The round-1 fix replaced ${HOME}/.ai-workflows/_shared/… references with relative paths (../../_shared/…). However, ${HOME}/.ai-workflows is the correct repo-wide convention — install.sh line 29 hardcodes INSTALL_DIR="${HOME}/.ai-workflows" for all scopes, and there are 15 existing call sites on main that use this form. The relative path in the "Shared Script" prose block is documentation for the source-tree layout, not a runtime invocation pattern.

The three replacement idioms all fail in different ways:

PR Replacement idiom Failure mode
#131 python3 "../../_shared/scripts/fetch-issue.py" Resolves relative to agent CWD (typically the project root), NOT relative to the .md file. Lands two directories above the project. Breaks /ingest, /review-api, /sync.
#138 realpath "../../_shared/scripts/fetch-issue.py" realpath fails on a non-existent path → FETCH_ISSUE_SCRIPT is empty → every invocation silently skips or errors.
#137 $(cd "$(dirname "${BASH_SOURCE[0]}")/../.." && pwd) BASH_SOURCE is meaningless in an agent context reading a Markdown file — there is no bash script being sourced. May succeed spuriously with a wrong path. Also leaves implement internally inconsistent: publish.md and respond.md still use ${HOME}.

Recommendation: Revert all three PRs back to ${HOME}/.ai-workflows/_shared/… for runtime script invocations. The ../../_shared/ relative path is valid only as a source-tree reference in prose, not as an executable path.

🟡 Important

I1 — /publish stash-restore is a no-op; failure exits skip it
publish.md round-1 fix added git stash pop to restore uncommitted work. However, the shell variables from the stash step (STASH_REF) don't persist across separate command blocks in an agent-executed Markdown skill. Each bash block runs in a fresh shell. Additionally, every early-exit/error path skips the restore entirely, leaving the user's docs-repo checkout with stashed-away changes.

  • File: ui-design/skills/publish.md (stash/restore blocks)
  • Reviewer: Opus (I1)

I2 — /respond cannot reach the PR branch after /publish restores user's checkout
publish.md now checks the user back out to their original branch after pushing. But /respond needs to be on the PR branch to read comments and push fixes. It has no git checkout or git pull step — it assumes it's already on the PR branch. After a publish → respond sequence, /respond commits onto the wrong branch.

  • File: ui-design/skills/respond.md (no branch checkout), ui-design/skills/publish.md (restores user branch)
  • Reviewer: Opus (I2)

I3 — /sync Step 4 still references publish as required, contradicting the Step 1 fix
Round-1 fixed Step 1 to make publish optional. But Step 4's prose still says "if pr_url was invalid, Step 1 already stopped" — twice. Since Step 1 no longer stops on missing publish, this guard is dead and the subsequent logic may use an undefined pr_url value.

  • File: ui-design/skills/sync.md (Step 4)
  • Reviewer: Opus (I3)

I4 — Stale api-findings file never cleaned up when findings shrink below overflow threshold
When API findings shrink back below the 200-line threshold on a re-run of /review-api, the overflow file 03-api-findings.md is never deleted. /sync then reads both the inline findings (now complete) and the stale overflow file, producing a conflicting/duplicate gap set.

  • File: ui-design/skills/review-api.md (overflow write), ui-design/skills/publish.md (cleanup conditional)
  • Reviewers: Opus (I4), Astra (3) — independently flagged

I5 — Feature discovery --parent-fields projection may not return the Epic's own parent
ingest.md calls fetch-issue.py get {workspace-id} --parent-fields parent, key, summary to get the parent Epic. But this projects parent on the returned parent, not on the story itself — so it gets the Epic's parent (Feature) embedded inside the Epic record, which is correct. However, if the Jira parent expansion doesn't nest (depends on API version), the Feature key won't be in the response and the fallback silently proceeds with an empty feature-slug.

  • File: ui-design/skills/ingest.md (Step 2 hierarchy)
  • Reviewer: Astra (2)

I6 — /sync after first publication skips the Jira link update
After the first /publish, /sync is supposed to update each [DEV] story with a link to the published UI design doc's PR. But the round-1 fix that made publish optional means /sync now exits early when there's no pr_url change — even though the PR was just created and stories have never had the link added.

  • File: ui-design/skills/sync.md (Step 4)
  • Reviewer: Astra (4)

I7 — Incremental publication attempts to create an already-existing PR
When /publish runs a second time (e.g., after /revise), it re-runs the "create draft PR" step. If the PR already exists, the gh pr create command fails. The round-1 fix for "no re-publish path" only addressed updating file content — it didn't add a check for an existing PR before the create step.

  • File: ui-design/skills/publish.md (Step 3 — create PR)
  • Reviewer: Astra (5)

I8 — Early exit in /sync prevents recovery of interrupted sync
When /sync detects no new/changed gaps, it exits immediately. But if a previous sync was interrupted after creating some Jira stories but before adding dependency links, those stories remain linkless. The early exit skips the link-repair pass that would fix them.

  • File: ui-design/skills/sync.md (early exit logic)
  • Reviewer: Astra (6)

I9 — Feasibility & Phasing section dropped at ux-design → ui-design boundary (cross-PR with #108)
See PR #108 finding I2 — ingest.md doesn't read the Feasibility & Phasing section from the ux-design handoff.

  • File: ui-design/skills/ingest.md (handoff consumption)

This is the second-pass review. Round 1 findings and fixes are tracked in the earlier comment. See also: #108, #138, #137.

All 10 findings from the second-pass holistic review have been addressed in commit 0f042ff.

Critical

Finding Fix
C1 Reverted all ../../_shared/ paths back to ${HOME}/.ai-workflows/_shared/ across 7 skill files + dispatch.md. install.sh convention (${HOME}/.ai-workflows) confirmed as the correct runtime invocation pattern — relative paths resolve against agent CWD, not the markdown file.

Important

Finding Fix
I1 Publish stash-restore now persists ORIGINAL_BRANCH and stash state to files (publish-original-branch.txt, publish-stash-created.txt). Reads them back in the restore step. All error/early-exit paths include restore obligation.
I2 Respond.md Step 1a reads branch name from publish-metadata.json and checks it out in the docs repo. Creates tracking branch if not local.
I3 Removed stale "Step 1 already stopped" guards from sync.md Step 4. Replaced with conditional pr_url handling (placeholder vs valid URL).
I4 Review-api.md: rm -f ".artifacts/ui-design/{workspace-id}/03-api-findings.md" when findings fit inline (below 200-line threshold).
I5 Bare key string handling already present in ingest.md; C1 path fix applied to ensure scripts resolve correctly.
I6 Sync.md: pr_url-update check before early exit — compares manifest pr_url with publish-metadata.json, updates all active stories' descriptions when pr_url changes. Added pr_url to manifest schema.
I7 Publish.md: checks for existing PR via gh pr list --head {BRANCH_NAME} before gh pr create, with cross-repository fallback.
I8 Sync.md: link-repair pass moved before early-exit evaluation — repairs execute even when no new/changed gaps exist.
I9 Ingest.md: reads Feasibility & Phasing section from UX handoff and includes it in 01-context.md template.

Tests: 323 (_shared/scripts) + 15 (ui-design/scripts) pass. Version validation: PASSED.

## Summary

Extends the `implement` workflow's `/ingest` phase to support
**polymorphic design references** — enabling it to handle `[DEV]`
stories originated by the `ui-design` workflow's `/sync` phase, not just
stories from `design/decompose`.

## Problem

The `implement` workflow's `/ingest` currently assumes all upstream
design context lives in `design.md`. However, `[DEV]` stories created by
`ui-design/sync` represent API gaps discovered during UI-to-API mapping.
These stories:

- Will not have corresponding sections in `design.md`
- Use `ui_design.md` as their design document (published to the same
docs repo feature directory)
- Include a `Source: ui-design/sync` field in their Design Reference
section (added by [PR
#131](#131))

Without this change, the implement workflow falls back to story
acceptance criteria alone for UI-originated stories, losing the valuable
design context in `ui_design.md`.

## Changes

Three targeted modifications to `implement/skills/ingest.md`:

### Step 3 — Capture new Design Reference fields
- Added `Source` and `UI Design section` to the list of fields captured
during Jira story fetch, enabling Step 5c to select the correct design
document.

### Step 5c — Polymorphic design source selection
- Added `ui_design.md` as item #2 in the Need list
- Added a **"Selecting the design source"** subsection with conditional
logic:
- `Source: ui-design/sync` → use `ui_design.md` as primary design
document (grepped via `UI Design section` field), load `design.md` as
supplemental context if present
- No `Source` field → existing behavior unchanged (backward compatible)
- Updated fallback paragraph to reference "the primary design document
(whichever was selected above)"

### Step 5d — UI-design-originated testplan handling
- When `PRD Requirements` contains "Discovered during UI design", skip
requirement-based testplan fallback (these stories won't have matching
test cases in the feature testplan)
- Added new row in the outcome table for this case

### Version bump
- `implement/SKILL.md`: `0.11.1` → `0.12.0` (MINOR — new behavior added,
per AGENTS.md conventions)

## Context

This is part of the cross-workflow traceability work documented in the
ui-workflows.md planning doc. See the "Cross-Workflow Traceability: How
[DEV] Stories Reach implement" section for the full design rationale.

Related: [PR #131](#131)
adds the `Design Reference` section with `Source` field to the ui-design
sync story template (the upstream producer for this change).

Resolve conflicts merging both ui-design and ux-design workflow support
into shared provenance infrastructure:

- _shared/recipes/capture-provenance-event.md: include both ui-design
and ux-design in WORKFLOW and PHASE documentation
- _shared/recipes/render-provenance-footer.md: include both workflows
- _shared/scripts/provenance.py: merge WORKFLOW_DOCS, ORIGIN_PHASES,
AUTHORING_PHASES, WORKFLOW_PHASES, and CLI choices for both workflows
- implement/SKILL.md: reconcile version to 0.12.1 (main=0.12.0, ours=0.11.2)

From CI's perspective (merge-base = upstream/main HEAD), shared files
and packages where both branches made the same version bump appear as
"content changed, version not bumped." Reconcile these to main + 1 PATCH:

- _shared/recipes/capture-provenance-event.md: 0.1.2 → 0.1.3
- _shared/recipes/render-provenance-footer.md: 0.2.1 → 0.2.2
- design/SKILL.md: 0.11.4 → 0.11.5
- prd/SKILL.md: 0.11.4 → 0.11.5
- skills/report-bug/SKILL.md: 0.1.1 → 0.1.2
- ux-design/SKILL.md: 0.1.0 → 0.1.1 (cascade from shared file changes)

## Summary

Adds the `ui-implement` workflow — a UI-focused implementation workflow
that takes `[UI]` Jira stories through planning, TDD implementation,
validation, and PR creation. This completes the third step in the UX/UI
workflow pipeline: `ux-design` → `ui-design` → `ui-implement`.

## Design Decisions

**Relationship to `implement`:** `ui-implement` is a separate workflow
(not a mode of `implement`). `implement` handles `[DEV]` stories;
`ui-implement` handles `[UI]` stories. Both share the same 7-phase
structure (ingest → plan → revise → code → validate → publish → respond)
but differ in how each phase handles UI-specific concerns.

**TDD for unit tests:** Uses the same contract-based testing approach as
`implement`, adapted for UI:
- Components: tests verify rendered output + user interactions through
the public interface (props → what the user sees and does)
- Hooks: tests verify return values + state transitions
- Integration/e2e test stubs are written _after_ implementation (not
TDD), following the repo's existing patterns

**Discovery-based tooling:** Nothing is hardcoded. Testing framework,
design system, i18n library, state management, routing, permissions
model, and e2e framework are all discovered during `/ingest` from the
project's actual codebase. A hard limit in `guidelines.md` enforces
this.

**Unit test framework introduction:** When `/ingest` discovers no unit
test framework exists, it analyzes the project and recommends one (with
alternatives and rationale). `/plan` ratifies this as "Task 0" — the
user approves before any story tasks are planned.

**Docs repo consumption:** Design documents are consumed from the
published docs repo (via `.artifacts/config.json`), never from upstream
workflow `.artifacts/` directories:
- `ui-design.md` — required (component architecture, hook designs, state
management, routes, data flow, accessibility)
- `handoff.md` — optional (UX interaction specs, state matrix,
accessibility requirements)
- `api-findings.md` — optional (resolved endpoints, API gap inventory)
- `prd.md` and `design.md` — required (same as `implement`)

**Build-first strategy:** Patterns are adapted from `implement`
directly. Common behavior is marked for future extraction to `_shared`
recipes in a follow-up PR.
