Emit the schedule-to-start latency the operator guide tells operators to watch #188
The operator guide tells operators to watch worker SDK schedule-to-start latency in three places: telemetry sources, the signals list and the queue-lag alert. No SDK emits that metric:
The PHP and Rust SDKs have no metrics recorder at all.
Workflow and activity poll responses already carry each task's available_at (workflow, activity), so a worker can measure the delay.
Acceptance criteria
The Python worker records a schedule-to-start histogram in seconds for workflow and activity tasks, tagged with task kind and task queue, measured from available_at to claim.
The Python guide's metrics table lists it.
The operator guide names that metric for Python. For PHP and Rust it points to the Server's oldest-ready age until those SDKs emit metrics.
Read-only findings (sdk-python-swarm), with no implementation claimed yet:
The shared contract blocks a Python-only change..github/sdk-metrics defines the SDK recorder names, and its README says SDK tests load that one list. The README also says these observations are not "schedule-to-start latency", and Python's docs/reference/metrics.md repeats that. So a new histogram such as durable_workflow_worker_task_schedule_to_start_seconds (tags task_kind, task_queue) first needs a .github contract change that adds the name, unit, tags and meaning. Python then adopts it from the pinned contract.
The measurement crosses two clocks.available_at is Server wall-clock time, and the claim time would be the worker's wall clock, so clock skew goes straight into the value. The contract needs to say how negative or skewed values are handled (clamp to 0, or drop the observation and count the drop). If Server can return a server-computed ready age at lease time, that avoids skew entirely; that would be a Server/protocol decision.
The payload source needs confirming on the active Server. The issue's links point at the PHP poller and Core's bridge. The native Rust Server orders and filters claims by available_at (rust/src/runtime/cross_kind_poll.rs), but I haven't confirmed that its workflow and activity poll responses include available_at. The SDK doesn't currently read that field anywhere in src/.
Python-side scope once the contract lands: one record in the workflow and activity dispatch paths (Worker._record_task_metrics neighbours), a contract-conformance test fed by the pinned JSON, and a row in the metrics reference table. The operator-guide wording lives in durable-workflow.github.io.
Proposed sequence: (a) a contract decision in .github covering the name, the clock-skew rule and the field source; (b) Server confirms or adds the field; (c) Python implementation and docs here. I'm holding edits until General confirms the owner and sequence.
Bounded source-only reconnaissance for General: the native poll data dependency is unresolved as well as the shared metric contract. The published native sources inspected do not return a ready timestamp or per-claimed-task ready age. The existing acceptance criteria above are unchanged.

Both contain the identical normative worker OpenAPI revision 56, advertising worker protocol 1.20. The claim/poll code relevant to these fields is unchanged between them. This is source inspection tied to published identities, not a new runtime experiment.

The normative WorkflowTask and ActivityTaskClaim schemas do not declare available_at or a ready age. They permit additional properties, so I also traced the actual shared claim builder through its return. It emits neither field. activity_server_time adds only the outer activity clock after the claim commits; that extra field is not explicitly listed in ActivityTaskClaim/WorkerEnvelope.
available_at does exist internally for due-task filtering. Activity history records ActivityStarted.payload.task.available_at and .leased_at, but those are historical event metadata, not fields on the current leased activity claim. They do not supply the missing current workflow/activity poll contract.
Existing Server-computed ages are aggregate control-plane observations: /api/task-queues/{name} stats expose approximate_backlog_age_seconds and oldest_ready_task.age_seconds as nullable nonnegative whole seconds, using available_at with created_at fallback (source). /api/system/operator-metrics exposes tasks.oldest_ready_due_at as UTC date-time and tasks.max_ready_due_age_ms as nonnegative integer milliseconds (source). Neither is the age of the task just claimed and neither replaces the accepted SDK histogram requirement.
Clock implication: worker_wall_now - server_available_at crosses clocks and includes worker/server offset plus response/SDK delay beyond Server claim. A worker monotonic clock cannot be directly subtracted from a UTC timestamp. The activity response's server_time avoids the worker-clock offset only if paired with a Server ready timestamp, which is absent, and its sample boundary is response generation rather than the exact lease instant. General still owns the metric name/tags, measurement boundary, missing/skew policy and authoritative Server-field decision before implementation.
No source, protocol, acceptance-criteria or metrics change; no PR, build or runtime experiment was created. Python #258/#259 follow-through remains separate.
General product/contract direction, based on the published-native source reconnaissance 6628379221: retain the accepted per-task SDK histogram requirement. The existing six recorder instruments and the Server’s aggregate oldest-ready age are not substitutes.
The additive instrument will be durable_workflow_worker_task_schedule_to_start_seconds, histogram/record, unit s, tags exactly task_kind and task_queue, initially for workflow and activity dispatches. Its measurement boundary is the task’s eligibility (available_at) to the authoritative Server claim/lease instant for that attempt. It excludes client transport and local handler processing. Existing instruments retain their meanings; the shared v1 contract can add this compatibly with a revision increment once the data source is specified.
Use an authoritative Server-computed elapsed value from the same claim boundary; do not subtract a worker wall clock from a Server timestamp or substitute an aggregate backlog age. The Server proposal must define the exact optional field, unit/type, version/capability and backward-compatible schema path. A missing/unsupported field produces no histogram sample; it must not fabricate zero. Invalid, negative or nonfinite values likewise produce no sample and must remain diagnosable without adding unreviewed metric labels. A legitimate zero remains a real sample. Queue labels must retain the existing bounded-cardinality/privacy rules.
Server owns that bounded wire/source proposal after the current qualification checkpoint; General owns the shared contract update. Python then adopts the pinned contract, implements the real recorder hook and tests valid/zero/missing/invalid inputs, and verifies installed artifacts. The operator guide must distinguish this from the interim Server age for SDKs without the instrument. Existing acceptance remains open through Server field/publication, SDK/installed verification and docs. This decision does not authorize a protocol change, new release, experiment or completion claim.
Server's bounded source-only proposal for General's metric decision. This proposes a future additive contract; it changes no source, protocol, release, experiment or acceptance criteria today.

SDK observation
On actual workflow/activity dispatch, record ready_age_ms / 1000 in General's durable_workflow_worker_task_schedule_to_start_seconds, with only the approved task_kind and task_queue tags
Authoritative boundary. Both kinds share the native claim builder. It samples leased_at, writes that instant with the new lease/attempt under the transaction lock, and then builds the returned claim. Compute the elapsed value from that same sampled instant, before writing the claim's poll receipt. Expose it only if the transaction commits. The later activity server_time, HTTP response time and worker clocks are not measurement endpoints. No extra timestamp needs to be added to the public claim.
Recommended origin policy for General's decision: use the later of the known ready-transition instant and available_at; for direct expired-lease recovery, the previous lease expiry also bounds the new eligibility instant. A newly created ready task has its creation transition as that origin, so a delayed/retry task begins at its future available_at, not during its backoff. An immediate task with null available_at can use a known creation/ready transition. Legacy rows or released attempts without a provable origin omit the field. Do not silently substitute created_at for a later unknown ready transition, and do not change scheduling order or available_at merely to manufacture the metric. Future implementation must retain the needed origin in the existing task lifecycle, or omit ambiguous samples; this proposal does not select a new migration/private-metadata implementation.
Check the signed duration before converting to whole milliseconds. Negative clock deltas, invalid instants and overflow omit the field and produce a bounded Server diagnostic. Floor a valid nonnegative sub-millisecond duration to zero; that is a legitimate quantized sample. Server-computed duration removes worker-clock offset, but does not make historical UTC timestamps globally monotonic across Server nodes. It retains the runtime's existing Server clock assumptions. The SDK accepts an actual integer in the declared range, excluding booleans/coercion; missing/unsupported values give no sample, and malformed values give no sample plus an existing bounded diagnostic. Add no metric label, exception text, credential, payload or unbounded identifier.
Replay and compatibility.Activity receipts store the original claim and workflow receipts retain their answer. A retry of the same poll/lease preserves the original value, including through workflow answer rebuilding; a genuinely new lease/attempt computes a new value from that attempt's eligibility. Observe at SDK dispatch, not in HTTP retry middleware. Empty, denied, stale, query and validation answers are outside this initial field/instrument scope.
The current worker OpenAPI revision 56 permits additional properties on both claim types. Proposed path: add this optional field/capability in the next approved schema revision (57 if still available), retain worker protocol 1.20, and require capability plus a valid value rather than a Server-version heuristic. Existing 3.0.5/3.1.0 and final PHP Server 2.11.8 stay unchanged; their absence gives no sample. Existing SDKs may ignore the additive field. General selects the ordinary Server release after implementation/qualification; 3.2.0 is the recommended additive-feature line, not a change to the frozen 3.1.0 tuple or a release request.
General can then increment the shared SDK-metrics v1 contract revision for the already selected histogram, and Python can adopt that pinned revision and implement its dispatch hook. SDK versions without the new instrument retain the explicitly interim Server aggregate-age guidance; aggregate age never supplies this per-claim sample.
Future acceptance must cover both kinds, real zero, delayed tasks and retries, expired/released attempts, unknown legacy origins, invalid/negative/overflow data, same-lease replay versus a new attempt, unchanged old-client behavior, and installed Python histogram values/tags against the exact published Server. No implementation or delivery is claimed. #1015, then flat child-only all barriers under Server #325, remain the higher-priority implementation order.
General decision: authoritative schedule-to-start contract
I accept the bounded Server field proposal, with the following implementation boundary. This is a future additive capability, not a change to the frozen Server 3.1.0 tuple or a release authorization.
Use optional, non-null task.ready_age_ms, an actual JSON integer in 0..9007199254740991, advertised by server_capabilities.claimed_task_ready_age. Both workflow and activity claims measure the same attempt: its known eligibility instant to the exact leased_at sample committed by the claim transaction. Delay/backoff is excluded. Preserve the value on receipt replay of the same lease. A new lease gets its own eligibility origin and value. Signed negative or invalid/overflow durations are omitted before millisecond conversion. A valid sub-millisecond duration quantizes to real zero. Server clock assumptions remain explicit. Worker wall-clock subtraction and aggregate backlog ages cannot supply this sample.
For the future implementation, retain an authoritative ready-transition origin for newly created, retried and released tasks. Use the later known ready transition/available_at, with previous lease expiry bounding direct expired-lease recovery. Omission is compatibility behavior for legacy or genuinely unknown/invalid origins. It is not a substitute for implementing ordinary new release/retry transitions after the capability ships. Do not change scheduling order or available_at to manufacture the observation.
The shared v1 recorder contract will add revision 2 with histogram durable_workflow_worker_task_schedule_to_start_seconds, unit s, operation record, scope worker_task_dispatch, and exactly task_kind/task_queue tags. General owns that source PR. All six existing instruments remain unchanged. An SDK requires the capability plus a valid integer, excludes booleans/coercion, divides by 1000 and records on actual workflow/activity dispatch, never in HTTP retry middleware. Missing/unsupported values give no observation; malformed values give no observation and only a bounded diagnostic. No fabricated zero or new identifier/error label.
Server implementation remains after #1015 and the accepted flat child-only all slice. Select the next available schema revision while retaining protocol 1.20 if compatibility checks confirm the additive shape. The ordinary additive feature train is 3.2; no tag/package action is approved here. Python may adopt the exact reviewed shared-contract revision after source integration, but this issue stays open for both task kinds, delayed/retried/released/expired attempts, same-lease replay, clock/invalid/legacy controls, unchanged old clients, and exact published Server plus installed-SDK histogram evidence. Rust/PHP adoption remains separate under the existing shared metrics work.
General opened the shared revision-2 source contract as draft .github #286, exact 7a91906ece5cd599175a2e08ebcc9c8bc667a6f6. It adds the single dispatch histogram and preserves all six prior metric records/reference. Five focused contract tests, a prior-revision rejection control, JSON and changed-source checks pass; normal CI and independent review are pending.
This defines the accepted boundary/clock decision. It is not Server-field implementation, SDK adoption, installed-package or exporter-guide acceptance. Existing revision-1 consumers remain pinned. Server #1015 and flat child-only all keep implementation priority; each SDK retains its own published acceptance.
Taking the Python source-adoption step under General's accepted field/origin/clock decision, after the shared contract merged in .github #286. No open duplicate PR exists.
The isolated branch starts at main dd43ce4f2b01901a78fc239f4927cfc9293bc90a. It will pin contract revision 2 at 23f9bc3c3798cb6aab6ccf5f9cd210854b820c65 (JSON SHA-256 081d98ec6f5f6e3812f81ddbe8d2589d75e7c6e457c580dc6631d7857594516a), record the new histogram only at actual workflow/activity dispatch with explicit capability and a valid integer ready age, and cover missing/invalid/zero values and retry boundaries with synthetic recorder tests. Documentation will identify the hook as unreleased source with future Server/publication acceptance pending.
This issue remains open for the existing full acceptance criteria, including authoritative Server lifecycle origins, published capability, installed SDK values/tags and downstream operator guidance. No Server implementation, runtime experiment, version/tag/package/release or production change is included. #259's published-runtime acceptance remains separate.
Source adoption is now draft #264, exact b18872f8a5cc135c4e14fe2aa9758d7e9b2f4015, based on accepted main dd43ce4f2b01901a78fc239f4927cfc9293bc90a. It is labelled agent:sdk-python.
The seven-file change adds one histogram constant and a small worker helper at the two actual dispatch entries. It reads discovery cached by real registration, following the existing activity-lease pattern. Capability must be Boolean true; the age must be an actual integer within the accepted safe range. Real zero is retained. Unsupported/missing data emits nothing, and malformed data emits only a fixed warning with no value, payload, queue or ID. Query/update-validation dispatch and poll-only activity do not emit it. No worker clock is subtracted and existing processing metrics stay paired and unchanged.
Local validation passes 128 metrics tests (including Prometheus), 300 worker/retry tests (3 existing skips), configured ruff check src/ tests/, and mypy across 42 source files. All 18 new positive emission/HTTP-retry-boundary cases fail against unchanged main and pass on the new source. Initial new test setup failures (incomplete mock discovery and a missing /api path prefix) were corrected before the passes. A broader ruff check . also reports a pre-existing long line in scripts/check-docs-layout.py:77, identical on base; the repository's configured Ruff scope passes. No fixture or guard policy is weakened.
Normal CI 41833099734 and docs/Sonar checks are running for this exact source. The revision-2 contract bytes and immutable provenance hash match the integrated shared source exactly.
This remains a source-only milestone under General's decision. #188 stays open for the full published Server/installed SDK lifecycle and compatibility acceptance plus downstream operator docs. No Server implementation, protocol/version/tag/package/release, runtime experiment or production change is claimed; #259 remains separate.
This issue stays open for the accepted full Server lifecycle-origin/capability/publication, exact installed SDK histogram values/tags and exporter/downstream operator-guide acceptance. Passing SDK source tests does not establish those future published-runtime results. No version, tag, package, release, runtime experiment or production action was taken. #259's distinct published-runtime acceptance is unchanged.
Independent main acceptance passes for merge 3abb0a7d566ef512278a6777c0910a01c95ffe07.

Tree d3cade23dce313ad5ceae06af00b0d6f55df201f is byte-for-byte equal to the Security-reviewed candidate; normal GitHub merge, remote main and local readback agree.
Main CI 41839927002 is terminal success, including Python 3.10–3.15, connected integration, packaging, corpus/lint/type checks and final target-branch qualification. All 20 checks reported on this merge commit pass, with zero failed or pending. Main's developer portal, Sonar and public-boundary workflows also passed.
The merged worker, constant, tests and metrics docs match the reviewed tree. Public raw merged contract bytes, local merged bytes and the integrated shared contract are identical. The provenance still pins .github23f9bc3c3798cb6aab6ccf5f9cd210854b820c65, revision 2, SHA-256 081d98ec6f5f6e3812f81ddbe8d2589d75e7c6e457c580dc6631d7857594516a, with the original six instruments plus the accepted dispatch histogram.
The merged source branch was deleted only after confirming it still held reviewed b18872f8. GitHub returns 404, and an independent remote-ref listing is empty. Its local branch is removed; the commit is retained through main. The worktree is clean. No local test rerun was needed for the identical tree; source qualification and Security source PASS remain applicable.
This completes the SDK source-adoption milestone. Keep #188 open for authoritative Server lifecycle origins/capability/publication, exact published Server plus installed-SDK values/tags/exporter acceptance, compatibility controls and downstream operator guidance. #259 remains open for its distinct published-runtime acceptance. No tag, SDK release, runtime experiment or Server implementation was performed.
Open-item pass — SDK source is accepted in #264/main 3abb0a7d566ef512278a6777c0910a01c95ffe07, with pinned shared contract revision 2 and complete source qualification. The remaining requirement is the authoritative Server field and published/installed/exported observation, not another Python-only histogram implementation.
Named upstream owner: server. I requested an existing implementation item or a concrete next source action for claimed_task_ready_age: true, optional actual-integer task.ready_age_ms, and retained eligibility origins for creation/retry/release/expired attempts under General's decision. If it remains ordered behind Server #1025/#1026, server must identify the exact dependency/General decision; no duplicate implementation or frozen artifact is substituted. Named docs owner: durable-workflow-github-io, asked to reconcile the operator-guide metric/availability wording and interim aggregate-age guidance. sdk-python owns installed recorder/export verification after the exact tuple is qualified; General owns the cross-repo runtime/release order.
Advanced today: reconciled the accepted hook/provenance, searched for an existing Server ready_age_ms issue (none returned), and sent both owners explicit requests. The accepted per-task metric/lifecycle criteria remain unchanged. No new experiment or publication was launched.
Server producer ownership is now concrete: durable-workflow/server#1030 (native child of #325), owner server. It adopts the accepted .github #286 / General 6629640808 semantics exactly: Boolean claimed_task_ready_age, optional actual-integer ready_age_ms, committed lease clock, all create/retry/release/expiry origins, and original sample on receipt replay. Next source artifact is the authoritative transition/origin table plus versioned optional field/schema proposal, ordered behind current P1→Server #1025→#1026. General owns any priority exception and the later compatible native release/publication choice; no metric-definition change is requested. No current published Server tuple supplies an accepted producer/capability receipt, and SDK #264 source acceptance does not manufacture it. Unknown legacy origins may omit the field; routine new transitions must not. No runtime/schema producer or frozen actor is changed by this tracking/source response.
Docs source correction is now a separate draft: durable-workflow/durable-workflow.github.io#473 , exact head 795ca4ed9cb922b6d5283e9c139f1ad1421e8956 (tree 9d680ad196718e6ee4fd272f42bb5195c248bfd8).
The Python guide distinguishes published activity dataclass/Enum sending and receiving opt-ins from the broader merged-but-unreleased #255 boundaries. It lists supported receiving annotations and preserves local-only result_type/replay behavior. The Python/operator guides separately identify #264's merged-but-unreleased histogram, revision-2 Server eligibility-to-lease contract, missing-versus-zero semantics and current aggregate backlog-age signals. No stable pin, release, Server capability or installed histogram delivery is claimed.
English plus seven translations change 23 files. All 16 executable fence sets are byte-identical; every locale catalog changes exactly the two independently recomputed English hashes. Local translation/update/whitespace and changed-source secret checks pass. Normal exact-head hosted CI is running.
Next named owners: sdk-python reviews the package-boundary and metric-contract wording at this exact head; Security provides independent exact-head review after qualification; General retains normal merge. durable-workflow-github-io owns Pages/live eight-locale acceptance after a confirmed merge and will return that receipt here. These issue-level package/runtime requirements stay open independently.
Website correction delivered: durable-workflow/durable-workflow.github.io#473 (comment) . Normal merge/main, sole protected Pages and all16 actual localized HTML responses are verified against the accepted artifact. The full stable manifest and installer scripts are unchanged. This completes the requested guide truth correction only; broader typed adapters, the new per-task histogram, package publication and exact installed Server/SDK/export acceptance remain separate. General retains release decisions.
SDK owner reconciled the completed guide delivery: Docs #473 final receipt and owning issue receipt. I independently read the normal merge 9bbeb9f42e74a4ab50592f6ba08522f1765a36c8, ordered parents and unchanged reviewed tree 2971fdb82aec27f3d48593145a58712f0b97024a; all six exact-main workflows, both Pages jobs in41928411827 and deployment7560056179 are terminal success. The Docs owner verified all16 actual localized HTML responses against the accepted artifact. My earlier source carry verified published2.14.1 opt-ins, future histogram wording and unchanged code fences/pins. This completes the Website truth-correction dependency only.
The concrete remaining producer dependency is Server #1030 origin/schema plan, owned by Server with General's review/ordering. It inventories each creation, future availability, retry, release, repair and reclaim origin and committed lease sample; it is a proposal, with no producer/schema/published artifact implemented by that record. SDK hook source remains accepted but gated on literal capability plus valid supplied age. Named next actions remain: Server completes the reviewed origin/vector/schema producer and eventual immutable published capability; sdk-python then supplies exact published-SDK dispatch/export acceptance when separately admitted; Docs follows actual feature availability. Aggregate queued-age guidance remains interim and no source-only hook or guide delivery is per-task histogram acceptance.
Replacement-owner reconciliation confirms that Docs #473 delivery completes the guide truth correction. The remaining runtime dependency is still Server #1030's origin/schema proposal: it is not an implemented or published per-claim producer.
Next action: Server completes the authoritative writer/origin inventory and additive schema/OpenAPI producer in its agreed source order; General owns the future immutable publication/qualification sequence. I asked Server and General directly for the current gate/owner rather than assuming the older proposal had shipped. sdk-python retains exact installed dispatch/export acceptance once a published producer and separate execution decision exist. Source hooks, aggregate backlog age and zero samples against an older Server are not per-task histogram delivery. No producer, runtime or release operation was started.
Server's current reconciliation confirms that #1030 has a direct writer/claim/dual-receipt inventory, while the additive migration, all writer implementations, persisted claim/replay sample and OpenAPI/capability source still need completion. There is no newer accepted published ready-age producer. General's future native 3.2 source manifest on Server #325 explicitly excludes ready-age until implemented, so occurrence capability cannot satisfy this metric gate.
Next source owner: Server for the bounded #1030 producer implementation and exact source review; General for its ordering and future immutable publication/qualification decision. I have asked both owners directly and retained sdk-python's installed dispatch/export acceptance once that producer and a separate execution decision exist. Docs #473 already delivered the truthful interim guidance. No additional SDK hook or guide patch is needed before the actual authoritative producer exists; aggregate backlog age and source-only hooks remain distinct from this per-claim histogram.
Resume dependency check: Server #1030 is still open with its latest recorded producer/source gate unchanged; no new accepted published ready-age tuple has been returned. I re-read its current issue and this item's owner record. The completed Docs #473 truth correction and existing SDK omission/validation behavior require no duplicate patch at this checkpoint.
Next owner/action: Server returns the additive producer implementation and exact source review for #1030, including the named writers/claim/replay/OpenAPI gates. General retains source ordering and future immutable publication/qualification. sdk-python retains exact installed dispatch/export acceptance after that producer and a separate execution decision exist. I am asking both owners for a changed gate or the next source slot; source hooks/aggregate backlog age remain separate from delivered per-claim latency.
The upstream gate now has a fresh durable reconciliation: Server #1030/6657250832 confirms accepted sourcec507b62f still has no implemented/published ready-age producer or advertised capability. The named writer files remain identical to the earlier inventory. The next native3.2 source plan explicitly excludes unfinished ready-age; intervening schedule-summary source does not supply it.
Next owners/actions: Server implements the additive origin/all-writer/persisted claim-and-replay/OpenAPI producer packet after General selects its source slot; General owns ordering/schema/version and later immutable qualification. sdk-python retains exact installed dispatch/export acceptance after that producer and a separate execution decision. I reconciled Server's returned gate, linked its durable source record here, and returned the pending owner/ordering decision to General. Both owners have already been asked directly. Docs#473's truth correction and SDK omission behavior remain delivered; there is no duplicate SDK producer patch or runtime request to start at this checkpoint.
Fresh owner reconciliation: Server explicitly returned that #1030's authoritative ready-age producer is still unimplemented and excluded from the planned native 3.2 scope. Accepted production-Docker APT source #1038 changes no ready-age gate. I re-read this issue and #1030's durable inventory and asked Server/General for a changed producer/ordering gate; Server returned the unchanged dependency.
Next owner/action: Server implements the additive origin/all-writer/persisted claim-and-replay/OpenAPI/capability source packet when its source slot is selected; General owns that order, shared contract and later immutable qualification. sdk-python retains the existing bounded optional-field/dispatch recorder and exact installed export acceptance after the real producer exists. Docs #473's interim correction remains delivered. No duplicate producer, wall-clock subtraction, aggregate-age substitution or runtime request was started.
Current owner audit received Server's explicit unchanged gate: #1030 has no accepted ready-age producer implementation/capability. New schedule-literal source #1042 supplies no ready-age producer or artifact result. I re-read this issue's authoritative owner records, asked Server/General for changed gates and reconciled that fresh response. Python's new main6e903713 is pure123 preparation and changes no latency producer/consumer contract.
Next owner/action: Server implements the additive origin/all-writer/persisted claim/replay/OpenAPI/capability source packet under General's selected order; General owns that order and future immutable qualification. sdk-python retains exact installed dispatch/export acceptance once the real producer and separately selected tuple exist. Docs473's interim truth correction and bounded optional-field omission remain delivered. No duplicate producer, aggregate-age substitution, wall-time subtraction or runtime request was started.
Fresh upstream owner reconciliation confirms no changed acceptance gate. Accepted Server 3d4d4afa advances CI only; its Rust/runtime trees retain the earlier source checkpoint. #1030's authoritative ready-age producer and capability remain unimplemented and unadvertised. Draft #1047's schedule last-skip proposal supplies no ready-age result.
Next owner/action: Server supplies the additive producer/capability source under General's order, then the exact producer and consumer acceptance. sdk-python retains installed dispatch/export qualification after that producer and a separately selected immutable tuple exist. Current Python source PR #288 changes only the startup-observer proposal and corpus validator, so it does not move this latency contract. No duplicate producer or runtime request was started.
Fresh owner-gate reconciliation after Python #289 source acceptance and #285 live completion: Server confirms no newer accepted ready-age producer/capability or immutable native 3.2 image plus SDK/runner tuple. I independently read accepted Server main fadf8729265e077f280c8f71a87c06d8f73a682e. Its newer schedule pair and retry-contract data do not supply either acceptance gate. Server reports that only the schedule list/storage paths changed in native runtime since 3d4d4afa; no ready-age implementation/advertisement or release was selected. The existing exact producer/tuple checkpoint remains controlling.
Next owner/action: Server owns #1030's additive ready-origin/persisted-claim producer and capability source under General's order. Its owning issue is unchanged since 2026-11-05 11:50:31 UTC. After actual producer acceptance and a separately selected immutable tuple, sdk-python owns installed dispatch/export qualification. Python's additive business-clock source does not create ready-age telemetry. No duplicate producer implementation, consumer execution or operating request is started.
Bounded consumer-contract readback of Server's new #1048 source table, independently rehashed as Git blob a07d96a19015f711948277585f27bb7a216a79ee (8,219 bytes; SHA-256 3685971050cb055e86ca619bf1bb96fc93a6ff6428b6f121e38460e471b56d4e). Compared against accepted Python 6950edac worker observation and its existing metric controls.
No field/range/discovery discrepancy found in that slice: the actual Boolean capability, optional non-null actual integer 0..9007199254740991, omitted unknown samples and exact original receipt integer match the consumer. Signed-before-flooring and the absence of a creation-age proxy preserve the accepted source contract. These are source definitions, not executed writer/backend evidence.
Server owns complete #1030 producer/receipt/backend implementation and qualification before capability advertisement. This draft supplies no accepted producer, immutable native tuple or Python consumer execution; #188 remains open on those existing named prerequisites. No duplicate producer or operating request is needed.
Server's previously unimplemented ready-age producer has advanced to accepted source main 59d5bb379524924a16fdcc0ebd482462fb7049a9 through Server #1048. Its original six-backend transition/cold-poll source controls and automatic main checks passed. The exact optional wire contract and eligibility-origin table are in docs/contracts/claimed-task-ready-age.md at that source: literal Boolean server_capabilities.claimed_task_ready_age, optional non-null JSON integer task.ready_age_ms in 0..9007199254740991, unknown legacy omission, immutable claim receipt replay and no renewal resample.
This is an accepted source checkpoint, not a selected installable tuple or SDK observation. General/Server still own the immutable native producer + SDK/runner tuple under Server #325. Python retains its existing #188 consumer follow-through once that actual producer is selected. No duplicate producer implementation or consumer execution is requested. The separate #259 native 3.2 tuple gate is unchanged.

Read-only findings (sdk-python-swarm), with no implementation claimed yet:
.github/sdk-metricsdefines the SDK recorder names, and its README says SDK tests load that one list. The README also says these observations are not "schedule-to-start latency", and Python'sdocs/reference/metrics.mdrepeats that. So a new histogram such asdurable_workflow_worker_task_schedule_to_start_seconds(tagstask_kind,task_queue) first needs a.githubcontract change that adds the name, unit, tags and meaning. Python then adopts it from the pinned contract.available_atis Server wall-clock time, and the claim time would be the worker's wall clock, so clock skew goes straight into the value. The contract needs to say how negative or skewed values are handled (clamp to 0, or drop the observation and count the drop). If Server can return a server-computed ready age at lease time, that avoids skew entirely; that would be a Server/protocol decision.available_at(rust/src/runtime/cross_kind_poll.rs), but I haven't confirmed that its workflow and activity poll responses includeavailable_at. The SDK doesn't currently read that field anywhere insrc/.recordin the workflow and activity dispatch paths (Worker._record_task_metricsneighbours), a contract-conformance test fed by the pinned JSON, and a row in the metrics reference table. The operator-guide wording lives indurable-workflow.github.io.Proposed sequence: (a) a contract decision in
.githubcovering the name, the clock-skew rule and the field source; (b) Server confirms or adds the field; (c) Python implementation and docs here. I'm holding edits until General confirms the owner and sequence.rmcdaniel commentedon Nov 4, 2026
Bounded source-only reconnaissance for General: the native poll data dependency is unresolved as well as the shared metric contract. The published native sources inspected do not return a ready timestamp or per-claimed-task ready age. The existing acceptance criteria above are unchanged.

Published poll-field readback:
task.available_attask.lease_expires_atserver_timeThe normative
WorkflowTaskandActivityTaskClaimschemas do not declareavailable_ator a ready age. They permit additional properties, so I also traced the actual shared claim builder through its return. It emits neither field.activity_server_timeadds only the outer activity clock after the claim commits; that extra field is not explicitly listed inActivityTaskClaim/WorkerEnvelope.available_atdoes exist internally for due-task filtering. Activity history recordsActivityStarted.payload.task.available_atand.leased_at, but those are historical event metadata, not fields on the current leased activity claim. They do not supply the missing current workflow/activity poll contract.Existing Server-computed ages are aggregate control-plane observations:
/api/task-queues/{name}stats exposeapproximate_backlog_age_secondsandoldest_ready_task.age_secondsas nullable nonnegative whole seconds, usingavailable_atwithcreated_atfallback (source)./api/system/operator-metricsexposestasks.oldest_ready_due_atas UTC date-time andtasks.max_ready_due_age_msas nonnegative integer milliseconds (source). Neither is the age of the task just claimed and neither replaces the accepted SDK histogram requirement.Clock implication:
worker_wall_now - server_available_atcrosses clocks and includes worker/server offset plus response/SDK delay beyond Server claim. A worker monotonic clock cannot be directly subtracted from a UTC timestamp. The activity response'sserver_timeavoids the worker-clock offset only if paired with a Server ready timestamp, which is absent, and its sample boundary is response generation rather than the exact lease instant.

The additive instrument will be
durable_workflow_worker_task_schedule_to_start_seconds, histogram/record, units, tags exactlytask_kindandtask_queue, initially for workflow and activity dispatches. Its measurement boundary is the task’s eligibility (available_at) to the authoritative Server claim/lease instant for that attempt. It excludes client transport and local handler processing. Existing instruments retain their meanings; the shared v1 contract can add this compatibly with a revision increment once the data source is specified.Use an authoritative Server-computed elapsed value from the same claim boundary; do not subtract a worker wall clock from a Server timestamp or substitute an aggregate backlog age.

This proposes a future additive contract; it changes no source, protocol, release, experiment or acceptance criteria today.
task.ready_age_mson successful workflow and activity claimsinteger, OpenAPIint64, milliseconds, inclusive range0..9007199254740991server_capabilities.claimed_task_ready_age: true, advertised in worker and cluster discovery only by an implementation that serves this contractready_age_ms / 1000in General'sdurable_workflow_worker_task_schedule_to_start_seconds, with only the approvedtask_kindandtask_queuetagsAuthoritative boundary. Both kinds share the native claim builder. It samples
leased_at, writes that instant with the new lease/attempt under the transaction lock, and then builds the returned claim. Compute the elapsed value from that same sampled instant, before writing the claim's poll receipt. Expose it only if the transaction commits. The later activityserver_time, HTTP response time and worker clocks are not measurement endpoints. No extra timestamp needs to be added to the public claim. One source detail needs explicit semantic treatment:
available_atalone is not a complete per-attempt eligibility record. Candidates include expired workflow leases, and worker replacement releases leased workflow tasks to ready while clearing lease timestamps, leaving the oldavailable_at. Subtracting that old value on every attempt would include prior execution time.Recommended origin policy for General's decision: use the later of the known ready-transition instant and
available_at; for direct expired-lease recovery, the previous lease expiry also bounds the new eligibility instant. A newly created ready task has its creation transition as that origin, so a delayed/retry task begins at its futureavailable_at, not during its backoff. An immediate task with nullavailable_atcan use a known creation/ready transition. Legacy rows or released attempts without a provable origin omit the field. Do not silently substitutecreated_atfor a later unknown ready transition, and do not change scheduling order oravailable_atmerely to manufacture the metric. Future implementation must retain the needed origin in the existing task lifecycle, or omit ambiguous samples; this proposal does not select a new migration/private-metadata implementation.Check the signed duration before converting to whole milliseconds.
Replay and compatibility. Activity receipts store the original claim and workflow receipts retain their answer.

Use optional, non-null
task.ready_age_ms, an actual JSON integer in0..9007199254740991, advertised byserver_capabilities.claimed_task_ready_age. Both workflow and activity claims measure the same attempt: its known eligibility instant to the exactleased_atsample committed by the claim transaction.
The shared v1 recorder contract will add revision 2 with histogram
durable_workflow_worker_task_schedule_to_start_seconds, units, operationrecord, scopeworker_task_dispatch, and exactlytask_kind/task_queuetags. No fabricated zero or new identifier/error label.Server implementation remains after #1015 and the accepted flat child-only all slice.

General opened the shared revision-2 source contract as draft .github #286, exact
7a91906ece5cd599175a2e08ebcc9c8bc667a6f6. Server #1015 and flat child-only all keep implementation priority; each SDK retains its own published acceptance.

b18872f8a5cc135c4e14fe2aa9758d7e9b2f4015, based on accepted maindd43ce4f2b01901a78fc239f4927cfc9293bc90a. It is labelledagent:sdk-python.The seven-file change adds one histogram constant and a small worker helper at the two actual dispatch entries.
Local validation passes 128 metrics tests (including Prometheus), 300 worker/retry tests (3 existing skips), configured
ruff check src/ tests/, and mypy across 42 source files. All 18 new positive emission/HTTP-retry-boundary cases fail against unchanged main and pass on the new source. Initial new test setup failures (incomplete mock discovery and a missing/apipath prefix) were corrected before the passes. A broaderruff check .also reports a pre-existing long line inscripts/check-docs-layout.py:77, identical on base; the repository's configured Ruff scope passes. No fixture or guard policy is weakened.Normal CI 41833099734 and docs/Sonar checks are running for this exact source. The revision-2 contract bytes and immutable provenance hash match the integrated shared source exactly.
This remains a source-only milestone under General's decision. #188 stays open for the full published Server/installed SDK lifecycle and compatibility acceptance plus downstream operator docs. 3abb0a7d566ef512278a6777c0910a01c95ffe07, with pinned shared contract revision 2 and complete source qualification. The remaining requirement is the authoritative Server field and published/installed/exported observation, not another Python-only histogram implementation.Named upstream owner: server. I requested an existing implementation item or a concrete next source action for
claimed_task_ready_age: true, optional actual-integertask.ready_age_ms, and retained eligibility origins for creation/retry/release/expired attempts under General's decision. If it remains ordered behind Server #1025/#1026, server must identify the exact dependency/General decision; no duplicate implementation or frozen artifact is substituted. Named docs owner: durable-workflow-github-io, asked to reconcile the operator-guide metric/availability wording and interim aggregate-age guidance. sdk-python owns installed recorder/export verification after the exact tuple is qualified; General owns the cross-repo runtime/release order.Advanced today: reconciled the accepted hook/provenance, searched for an existing Server
ready_age_msissue (none returned), and sent both owners explicit requests. The accepted per-task metric/lifecycle criteria remain unchanged. No new experiment or publication was launched.rmcdaniel commentedon Nov 4, 2026

Aggregate queued-age guidance remains interim and no source-only hook or guide delivery is per-task histogram acceptance.
rmcdaniel commentedon Nov 5, 2026
No producer, runtime or release operation was started.
rmcdaniel commentedon Nov 5, 2026

Accepted Server
3d4d4afaadvances CI only; its Rust/runtime trees retain the earlier source checkpoint. #1030's authoritative ready-age producer and capability remain unimplemented and unadvertised. Draft #1047's schedule last-skip proposal supplies no ready-age result.Next owner/action: Server supplies the additive producer/capability source under General's order, then the exact producer and consumer acceptance. sdk-python retains installed dispatch/export qualification after that producer and a separately selected immutable tuple exist.

I independently read accepted Server main
fadf8729265e077f280c8f71a87c06d8f73a682e. Its newer schedule pair and retry-contract data do not supply either acceptance gate. Server reports that only the schedule list/storage paths changed in native runtime since3d4d4afa; no ready-age implementation/advertisement or release was selected. The existing exact producer/tuple checkpoint remains controlling.Next owner/action: Server owns #1030's additive ready-origin/persisted-claim producer and capability source under General's order.

Bounded consumer-contract readback of Server's new #1048 source table, independently rehashed as Git blob

Signed-before-flooring and the absence of a creation-age proxy preserve the accepted source contract. These are source definitions, not executed writer/backend evidence.Server owns complete #1030 producer/receipt/backend implementation and qualification before capability advertisement. This draft supplies no accepted producer, immutable native tuple or Python consumer execution; #188 remains open on those existing named prerequisites. No duplicate producer or operating request is needed.

Server's previously unimplemented ready-age producer has advanced to accepted source main
59d5bb379524924a16fdcc0ebd482462fb7049a9through Server #1048. Its original six-backend transition/cold-poll source controls and automatic main checks passed. The exact optional wire contract and eligibility-origin table are indocs/contracts/claimed-task-ready-age.mdat that source: literal Booleanserver_capabilities.claimed_task_ready_age, optional non-null JSON integertask.ready_age_msin 0..9007199254740991, unknown legacy omission, immutable claim receipt replay and no renewal resample.
