[#3207] Built the database image from a dump file on a clean base image for every fetch source. - #3242
A database container image is always built from a database dump file. The nightly database job fetches that file, imports it into a clean VORTEX_DB_IMAGE_BASE image and pushes the result. This now holds for the container_registry source too: the file comes from the source in the new VORTEX_REFRESH_DB_SOURCE (url, ftp, acquia, lagoon or s3), and the image the job fetched is never used as a source of data. vortex-fetch-db-container-registry always pulls from the registry (or reuses an image already on the host), and the Export DB step on both CI providers is a call to the new vortex-refresh-db script.
On main, the base-image import skips the container_registry source, and the fetch loads the cached .data/db.tar, which is the previous run's export. The database job builds .docker/database.dockerfile on that archive and commits the result, adding 3 layers every day with runs. A nightly run that pulls VORTEX_DB_IMAGE and pushes back to the same tag grows the registry image the same way. Within about a month the image reaches Docker's 125-layer limit and the build fails with max depth exceeded.
After merge, every nightly image is the base image plus the same 3 layers, built from a fresh dump file, however many runs came before. Daytime runs pull the registry image and never stack on a cached archive. DIDI-II starts from an image that already holds a database, fetches a dump file from a URL, imports it into the base image, and asserts that none of the fetched image's data layers end up in the result.
This PR adds 2 more things:
An opt-in nightly refresh of the migration image. Set VORTEX_REFRESH_DB2_PROCEED=1 and the job imports the migration dump into a clean base image and pushes VORTEX_DB2_IMAGE. There's no provision, because the image only holds source data. It's off when the variable is unset.
A MySQL base image. The stack has run MySQL 8.4, but VORTEX_DB_IMAGE_BASE was a MariaDB 10.11 image, so database-in-image projects ran a different engine from everyone else. It's now drevops/db-data-mysql-8.4:26.11.0. The difference showed up as soon as the migration refresh imported a MySQL 8 dump: ERROR 1273 Unknown collation: 'utf8mb4_0900_ai_ci'.
What projects need to do
A container_registry project with VORTEX_DB_IMAGE and a base image set must now set VORTEX_REFRESH_DB_SOURCE, or the nightly job fails with a message saying so. The fetch script for that source reads its own variables, such as VORTEX_FETCH_DB_URL for url. The installer only writes the chosen fetch source's variables to .env, so these need adding. The migration database works the same way, with VORTEX_REFRESH_DB2_SOURCE and VORTEX_FETCH_DB2_ variables.
ahoy fetch-db no longer loads a db.tar from .data. Load it with docker load if you need it.
A project that wants to stay on MariaDB sets VORTEX_DB_IMAGE_BASE to drevops/db-data-mariadb-10.11:26.11.0 in its CI configuration. vortex-export-db-image runs mariadb-upgrade only when the image has it, so both engines work.
MySQL can't open a MariaDB data directory, so moving an existing image to MySQL means rebuilding it from a dump. The nightly job does that on its first run after the base image changes.
How the database image is used
The image is a read-only artifact. Production is the only place the data changes, and the nightly job is the only place the image is built.
VORTEX_FETCH_DB_SOURCE is url, ftp, acquia, lagoon or s3, and VORTEX_DB_IMAGE is set. The nightly path matches main.

main database refresh runs as usual
With a container_registry fetch source, the dump comes from VORTEX_REFRESH_DB2_SOURCE, the same way the main database uses VORTEX_REFRESH_DB_SOURCE. The migration image is BASE + 1 because database2 runs directly from the image. The main database service builds .docker/database.dockerfile first, and that's where the other 2 layers come from.

Evidence from this PR's CI
vortex-dev-database-ii on GitHub Actions:
Fetch DB pulled drevops/vortex-dev-mariadb-drupal-data-demo-destination-11.x, which has 21 layers.
Export DB ran vortex-refresh-db. It logged Started database dump fetch from URL and wrote a 1.4M db.sql, then tagged drevops/db-data-mysql-8.4:26.11.0 as the database image.
Provisioning reported Existing site found : No, so the database came from the dump file and not from the pulled image.
The assertion step logged Layers: base 27, fetched 21, exported 30 and The exported DB image is built on drevops/db-data-mysql-8.4:26.11.0.
vortex-dev-didi-database-fi on GitHub Actions:
Export DB logged Imported database dump file ./.data/db2.sql into the database2 service on the drevops/db-data-mysql-8.4:26.11.0 base image, then Pushed container image to the registry and Finished database 2 refresh.
The migration image starts as user 1000 on MySQL 8.4.13 with no server errors. It holds the dump's 1 table and 10 rows, and categories is still utf8mb4_0900_ai_ci, the collation that failed on MariaDB.
Things worth a look
Baked image size..docker/config/database/my.cnf sets innodb_redo_log_capacity to 1 GB. MySQL honours it, where MariaDB ignored it, so a baked main image is about 1.2 GB bigger uncompressed (2.79 GB against a 1.59 GB base). Compressed it's only about 13 MB bigger, so pushes barely change, but runners need the disk. I measured a 100 MB capacity at 1.82 GB. I've left the setting alone, because the 128 MB default aborts large imports with ERROR 1114 ... table is full.
Commit on a running server.seed.mysql.sh stops the server cleanly before capturing, while vortex-export-db-image commits it running with a read lock held. A local bake and the pushed migration image both restarted with no server errors, and the didi-build-fi and didi-build-ii jobs ran their tests against the pushed main images.
Image names. The vortex-dev-mariadb-drupal-data-* repositories keep their names, even though the DIDI images pushed to them are now MySQL.
Demo and test images. The images pinned at 1.40.0 stay MariaDB until .vortex/tests/update-test-assets next runs, which now seeds with seed.mysql.sh. That needs a registry push, so it's not part of this PR.
Changes
Tooling
.vortex/tooling/src/vortex-refresh-db is new and registered as a package binary in .vortex/tooling/composer.json. It runs what the CI configs ran inline, including the chmod that keeps .data readable for hashFiles(). For the container_registry source with a base image it fetches the dump file from VORTEX_REFRESH_DB_SOURCE first, failing up front when that is unset, container_registry or none, and failing when the dump doesn't land at the expected path. With VORTEX_DB_INDEX set it refreshes that indexed database instead.
.vortex/tooling/src/vortex-fetch-db-container-registry drops the archive load and the VORTEX_FETCH_DB_CONTAINER_REGISTRY_DB_DIR variable. The registry login runs before the fetch task, and failed pulls and tags end their task with a fail message. The base-image tagging path and VORTEX_FETCH_DB_FORCE work as before.
.vortex/tooling/src/vortex-push-db-image resolves indexed variables through VORTEX_DB_INDEX.
.vortex/tooling/src/vortex-export-db-image runs mariadb-upgrade only when the image has it. MySQL upgrades its data directory at startup and ships no upgrade binary.
Template
.github/workflows/build-test-deploy.yml and .circleci/config.yml call ./vendor/bin/vortex-refresh-db in Export DB and set VORTEX_DB_IMAGE_BASE to drevops/db-data-mysql-8.4:26.11.0. The migration refresh sits behind the MIGRATION installer tokens.
.env documents VORTEX_REFRESH_DB_SOURCE next to VORTEX_DB_IMAGE in the container_registry block, and its seeding links point to drevops/database-data-images.
DIDI
.vortex/tests/generate-vortex-dev-gha and .vortex/tests/generate-vortex-dev-circleci set VORTEX_DB_IMAGE_BASE and VORTEX_REFRESH_DB_SOURCE=url on the DIDI-II database job, and VORTEX_DB2_IMAGE and VORTEX_REFRESH_DB2_PROCEED=1 on DIDI-FI. The GitHub Actions generator adds the Record the fetched DB image layers and Assert the exported DB image is built on the base image steps.
.github/workflows/vortex-test-didi.yml and .circleci/vortex-test-common.yml are regenerated, and ahoy lint-ci confirms they match.
.vortex/tests/update-test-assets seeds with seed.mysql.sh from the 26.11.0 release, with its checksum updated.
Tests
.vortex/tooling/tests/unit/refresh-db.bats covers file storage, image storage without a base image, a file source imported into the base image, a container_registry source with a dump from VORTEX_REFRESH_DB_SOURCE, a missing or invalid VORTEX_REFRESH_DB_SOURCE, a dump fetched to another path, a failed provision and the indexed refresh paths.
.vortex/tooling/tests/unit/export-db-image.bats is new. It covers the conditional upgrade, the commit and archive, and a missing destination image.
.vortex/tooling/tests/unit/fetch-db-container-registry.bats drops the archive cases, and adds a pull when a db.tar exists and a failed pull.
.vortex/tooling/tests/unit/push-db-image.bats covers the indexed push.
Docs and fixtures
.vortex/docs/content/continuous-integration/README.mdx points to drevops/database-data-images and covers staying on MariaDB and moving an existing image to MySQL. Its new Dump file source for a database image section lists the variables each dump file source reads, for both databases.
.vortex/docs/content/continuous-integration/github-actions.mdx and circleci.mdx say the image is always built from a dump file and point container_registry projects to VORTEX_REFRESH_DB_SOURCE.
.vortex/docs/content/development/migrations.mdx covers the migration image refresh.
.vortex/docs/content/development/variables.mdx is regenerated with ahoy update-docs.
Installer fixtures are regenerated with ahoy update-snapshots.

Title check
The title accurately describes the main implementation change: database refresh now builds the database image from a dump on a clean base image across fetch-source workflows.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #3207 identifies the container-registry archive chain as the coding problem and lists clean-base rebuild or archive-cache removal as valid directions. The current PR implements both relevant parts: vortex-fetch-db-container-registry no longer loads .data/db.tar, and vortex-refresh-db exports the fetched container-registry database and provisions it into VORTEX_DB_IMAGE_BASE before export. The CI jobs use this script. Tests cover container-registry dump/import behavior, archive removal, provisioning failure, and export failure.

I've left the setting alone, because the 128 MB default aborts large imports withERROR 1114 ... table is full.seed.mysql.shstops the server cleanly before capturing, whilevortex-export-db-imagecommits it running with a read lock held. A local bake and the pushed migration image both restarted with no server errors, and thedidi-build-fianddidi-build-iijobs ran their tests against the pushed main images.vortex-dev-mariadb-drupal-data-*repositories keep their names, even though the DIDI images pushed to them are now MySQL.1.40.0stay MariaDB until.vortex/tests/update-test-assetsnext runs, which now seeds withseed.mysql.sh. That needs a registry push, so it's not part of this PR.Changes
Tooling
.vortex/tooling/src/vortex-refresh-dbis new and registered as a package binary in.vortex/tooling/composer.json. It runs what the CI configs ran inline, including thechmodthat keeps.datareadable forhashFiles(). For thecontainer_registrysource with a base image it fetches the dump file fromVORTEX_REFRESH_DB_SOURCEfirst, failing up front when that is unset,container_registryornone, and failing when the dump doesn't land at the expected path. WithVORTEX_DB_INDEXset it refreshes that indexed database instead..vortex/tooling/src/vortex-fetch-db-container-registrydrops the archive load and theVORTEX_FETCH_DB_CONTAINER_REGISTRY_DB_DIRvariable. The registry login runs before the fetch task, and failed pulls and tags end their task with afailmessage.
