[#3142] Documented the onboarding and ad hoc Git history secret scans with rotation guidance. - #3240
secret-scanning.mdx now has a "Scanning the Git history" section that tells teams when and how to run gitleaks git themselves: a 1-time onboarding scan of the full history, and ad hoc scans before merging a branch, before making a repository public, and after a Gitleaks upgrade or a rule change in .gitleaks.toml.
Both CI providers run gitleaks dir ., which reads the files in the checkout. When a secret is committed and deleted in a later commit, that scan passes while the secret stays readable in history. The page only had a 1-line pointer to gitleaks git ., with nothing on when to run it, what a clone has to contain for the result to mean anything, or what to do with a finding.
After merge, the page gives the commands (gitleaks git . -v --redact, and --log-opts="origin/main..HEAD" for a checked-out branch). It says to scan from a clone made without --depth, and before going public to run git fetch --tags origin plus a fetch of GitHub's refs/pull/*, so closed pull request commits get scanned. It also says to rotate the credential rather than rewrite history, and shows the <commit>:<file>:<rule>:<line> fingerprint format for .gitleaksignore. CI workflows, the installer, fixtures, and VORTEX_CI_GITLEAKS_IGNORE_FAILURE are untouched - this is the documentation-only option from the issue.

Added the "Scanning the Git history" section with "Onboarding scan", "Ad hoc scans", and "Handling a finding in the history" subsections.
Pointed the "Usage" paragraph at the new section instead of the bare gitleaks git . mention, and listed history scanning in the page intro.
Every scan command uses --redact. The page says this masks only the matched secret and the rest of the line still prints, so the output should still be treated as sensitive.
The onboarding scan says Gitleaks only sees the commits and branches in the local clone, and that a --depth clone holds part of the history and 1 branch.
The branch-range scan says to check out the branch first, because HEAD on the default branch gives an empty range.
The pre-publication scan fetches every branch, every tag, and refs/pull/*, so commits that only exist in closed pull requests are scanned.
The rotation guidance is a 3-step procedure (revoke, create, update), followed by why history rewriting doesn't close the exposure (clones, forks, CI caches, pull request refs).
Added Git to the heading capitalization exceptions, so "Scanning the Git history" passes Vortex.Headings.
The commands were checked against Gitleaks 8 on a scratch repository where a token was committed and then deleted: gitleaks dir reported nothing, gitleaks git reported the token, --log-opts limited the scan to the given range, --redact masked the token and kept the fingerprint, and the git-mode fingerprint in .gitleaksignore suppressed the finding.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The security guide distinguishes working-tree scans from Git-history scans. It adds onboarding and targeted history-scan instructions, and guidance for handling historical findings.

Scan scope and behavior .vortex/docs/content/development/security/secret-scanning.mdx, .vortex/docs/.vale/Vortex/Headings.yml
The guide explains checkout and Git-history scan behavior, onboarding scans, and targeted scan scenarios. The Vale heading exceptions now include “Git.”
The guide instructs readers to revoke, replace, and update exposed credentials instead of rewriting history. It explains how to add commit-specific fingerprints to .gitleaksignore.
The documentation can report a clean scan while exposed secrets remain unexamined; correct the fetch guidance and clarify these limitations before merging.

Explanation
Issue #3142 is open and directly linked. The documentation changes satisfy its onboarding and remediation requirements. They document gitleaks git . -v --redact, range scans, full-clone guidance, credential rotation, and .gitleaksignore fingerprints. The whole-PR diff changes only .vortex/docs/content/development/security/secret-scanning.mdx and the Vale heading configuration. It does not add the required default commit-range scans for GitHub Actions and CircleCI. It does not add limited history fetching, push and pull-request range derivation, first-push and force-push fallbacks, or the separate scheduled and manually dispatched full-history job. It does not update installer fixtures or snapshots. The issue's coding acceptance criteria therefore remain unmet.
Resolution
Implement and test the missing #3142 requirements in both CI providers. Add default commit-range scans beside the working-tree scans. Fetch only the history required for each range. Define non-spurious fallbacks for first pushes and force pushes. Derive ranges for pushes and pull requests. Add the separately fenced scheduled and workflow_dispatch full-history job. Preserve VORTEX_CI_GITLEAKS_IGNORE_FAILURE and allowlist behavior. Update the installer fixtures and snapshots. If this PR remains documentation-only, do not close #3142.

Account for secrets introduced by merge commits.
If a merge resolution adds a secret and a later commit removes it, the checkout scan misses it. The documented Git scans miss it too: Gitleaks v8.30.1 uses git log -p without merge diffs by default. Add a merge-aware scan with --diff-merges=first-parent, or state this limit. Keep --all when specifying --log-opts for a full-history scan. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Not adopting this one. The case needs a secret that appears only in a merge conflict resolution and is then removed. Every regular commit on both parents is still in the log gitleaks git reads, so it catches secrets committed on either side of a merge. Documenting the --diff-merges flag for that narrow case would add a second command to an onboarding step that should stay a single command.

@AlexSkrypnyk Understood. The concern is limited to secrets introduced only in a merge resolution, not regular commits on either parent. I accept your decision to keep the onboarding command unchanged and won’t press for this change.
