Why

Losing local state or moving to a new machine leaves an existing EKS cluster unmanageable through KSail. The existing recovery command records the cluster's identity, but lifecycle operations still require the missing creation snapshot.

What

Make the experimental recovery command work without project files and restore cluster management through the CLI, web, and desktop. Recovery requires an explicit target and confirmation, preserves live identity checks, and includes a documented procedure and design decision.

Fixes #6399

⚠️ Merge order: complete the real EKS recovery trial, including restored lifecycle operations and cleanup, before promotion.

Validation for 40cd4a2217377ce98cef06f65f872f61923b36a0:

  • RED → GREEN: missing-state lifecycle operations, region restoration, ambiguous-region refusal, create-over-recovered-identity refusal, empty-project recovery, and conflicting-distribution protection.
  • Full go test -p 2 ./... passed with Go 1.26.6; the complete affected packages also passed independently. Recovery API tests passed three repetitions.
  • Full Go build and repository lint passed; final affected-package lint reports zero issues.
  • Canonical make generate passed with no generated artifact drift. Documentation build passed with all internal links valid.
  • Built-CLI smoke test used an empty temporary home, a local eksctl fixture, synthetic credentials, and loopback EKS/STS endpoints. Preview wrote no identity; confirmed recovery wrote only the ownership record; a guarded stop succeeded; a same-name replacement was rejected before another scale operation. Every AWS request stayed on loopback.
  • API regression coverage exercises the production AWS SDK identity guard and verifies signed credential/region selection. The existing unconfirmable-target negative control still passes.
  • Correctness, security-boundary, and simplification self-review completed without remaining findings. No new dependencies.

The command retains its existing experimental gate. No AWS resources were created or changed, so these results do not claim real AWS environment validation or feature graduation. Remote CI and independent current-head review remain outstanding; the PR stays draft.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The experimental eks-bind command can recover local ownership state for an existing EKS cluster. It validates the target, displays the AWS identity, and writes an immutable ownership record only after confirmation. Cluster API lifecycle checks can use that record without a creation spec and verify the live identity before mutation. Configuration export uses the recorded region and rejects ambiguous ownership state. AWS discovery preserves cluster regions, and ownership listing rejects unreadable records. The changes also add documentation and recovery tests, including an EKS smoke-workflow recovery phase.

Possibly related PRs

  • devantler-tech/ksail#7085: Introduced unreadable EKS ownership-state errors and fail-closed listing behavior, which this change extends across recovery and lifecycle paths.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 28629

The EKS smoke workflow can fail without showing the eks-bind output, so diagnosing a failure may need another run against billable AWS resources. This does not affect product behavior. The real AWS recovery trial is still pending, which the author already identifies as a promotion gate.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 27ed5

Recovery deliberately restores management without the original creation state. Explicit target selection, confirmation and live identity checks constrain cross-cluster mistakes, and no privilege expansion was established. Some downstream enforcement paths and successful live recovery remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Recovery expands local management eligibility for an explicitly selected existing cluster, not AWS privileges. Downstream deletion or scaling still depends on the operator's AWS authority and recorded identity checks. The inspected target boundary is one cluster identity in one account and region; effective IAM policy breadth was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Operator-controlled target selection crosses into trusted ownership state only after provider and local-state validation, live AWS identity observation and explicit confirmation. Settings from a different project are cleared rather than inherited into the recovered target.
  • observed — The lower-level AWS provider rechecks immutable ownership immediately before stopping each nodegroup and before restoring each saved capacity. These checks counter the suspected bypass caused by provisioner methods delegating directly to the provider; immediate enforcement in the separate no-snapshot start helper remains incompletely inspected.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Capacity restoration retains its snapshot until live capacities are verified, allowing failure to leave recovery information available. Ownership persistence separately clears stale capacity state before atomically replacing the ownership file, so that two-file transition is not transactional. This persistence ordering predates the PR and is not established as an introduced security defect.
  • observed — Local API lifecycle actions execute under the EKS lifecycle lock. Failed actions retain a failed job with its error, while successful actions remove the job. This provides explicit failure visibility rather than reporting an interrupted remote transition as successful.

Review fixes published at eee0681897cfb3fc459b23f6abeb48c393bb5450:

  • Reproduced both current-head review findings before fixing them: mixed readable/corrupt ownership records no longer establish an unambiguous recovery identity, and explicit recovery no longer borrows another named cluster's AWS credential mappings or region.
  • The final credential-selection regression also fails against the original command via a Go source overlay, then passes against the fix. Matching-project custom aliases and the legacy-record exception still pass.
  • Full Go test suite passed. All three affected packages passed independently, relevant state/CLI/API race tests passed, and affected-package lint reports zero issues. Go build passed.
  • Built-CLI smoke used an isolated temporary home and loopback EKS/STS endpoints. With conflicting credentials and region in a different project's config, signed AWS requests used the explicit target selection. Preview wrote no state; confirmation wrote only identity; guarded stop succeeded; a replacement cluster was refused before mutation. No real AWS resources were accessed.
  • Both review threads have fix/evidence replies and are resolved. Correctness, security-boundary and simplification checks found no remaining local issue.

The updated head needs fresh remote CI and substantive independent review after CI is green. Code Quality gate completeness and real AWS environment evaluation remain outstanding, so the PR stays draft.

Delete finishes in a background goroutine, so the new EKS recovery test's
lifecycle lock was taken after the test restored HOME and landed in the real
~/.ksail/locks. Run the package under homeenv.Run, as other packages do, so
no test in it can reach the real home directory.

Repair push while this branch was idle (no push or human comment since 23:52Z):

🏠 Home Isolation Guard failed at eee0681. It found a new $HOME/.ksail/locks/eks/other-region.lock. The cause is TestDeleteResolvesAPersistedEKSTargetOutsideTheSelectedRegion: once Delete accepts the persisted target, it finishes in a background goroutine. That goroutine takes the EKS lifecycle lock after the test has restored HOME, so the lock lands in the real home directory.

36ef14b adds a homeenv.Run TestMain for pkg/cli/clusterapi, the remedy the guard names, matching the other packages that use it. I reproduced it locally by running the package with HOME pointed at a sandbox, as the guard does. Before the change the lock file appeared in the sandbox; after it the sandbox is untouched. The package tests and go vet pass.

The repair holds at 36ef14b553b341174ea4978d4fe2a8a29f1ed963. Every check passes, including 🏠 Home Isolation Guard and the Docker system tests, and the required gate is green.

This stays a draft on two open items:

  • Review at this head: a current-head review has not been secured yet. The free review lane is at its hourly limit, and I'll request one as capacity allows.
  • Tried as a user, named gate: the change recovers ownership of a real EKS cluster after local state loss. No PR check reaches that path. The loopback smoke test above exercises the CLI, but not a real AWS account. The only check that does is System Test - EKS, and it creates real cloud resources, so it needs a deliberate dispatch on this branch.

Resolves the conflict in the EKS system-test timeout comment: main added the
create-failure report step, so the step budget is re-derived (220 before
cleanup, 45 for cleanup, 15 headroom = 280).

Conflict with main repaired at 2272020d9 (a merge, no force-push).

  • The only conflict was the timeout comment in the EKS system-test workflow. main added the create-failure report step, so the budget is re-derived from the step timeouts in the merged file: 220 minutes before cleanup, 45 for cleanup, 15 headroom, which is the 280 this branch already set.
  • Checked locally on the merged tree: the build passes, the CI-harness tests pass (including the test that enforces that sum), and the cluster API and EKS provisioner tests pass (370).

Still open before this can be promoted: CI and a review at the new head, and the real-provider acceptance the change needs. No EKS trial is being started while aws#38 (account launch-capacity limit) is unanswered.

Updated this draft at 0e08879ef7f7e82bcc0fb7a704b3fde7333cb914, integrating current main and accepting the selected immutable ownership recovery design in the ADR. This addresses the recorded-decision finding for #6399; the command stays experimental and the live validation requirement is unchanged.

Local validation: Go 1.26.9 build and full test suite, EKS CLI/local API/state/provider race tests, completed lint with zero issues, and documentation build (194 pages). The actual CLI keeps the command hidden by default and refuses it without the experimental opt-in. Hermetic tests cover missing explicit targets and live identity refusal; no AWS trial was run.

This remains a draft. Fresh native CI and current-head review are required, followed by the real recovery/lifecycle/cleanup trial after AWS capacity #38 is resolved. Upgrade trial #7483 is a separate workstream.

Repaired the eksctl ownership query at 4c37b0716095172f99e3d1287a67db273185836d, on this existing draft.

The pinned eksctl v0.229.0 named query prints AWS cluster details without ownership. Its regional listing prints Name, Region and Owned; KSail previously decoded the nonexistent EksctlCreated JSON key and treated the named output as that regional summary. This prevented a legitimate recovery from reaching confirmation, even when AWS identity matched. Primary source: named output, regional ownership, and JSON printer.

KSail now decodes Owned and corroborates the named detail with exactly one matching regional entry under the same isolated credentials and region. Missing, duplicate, malformed or failed queries cannot establish ownership. False, unknown and empty ownership remain rejected by the existing mutation guards. Account, ARN, creation identity and confirmation checks remain required.

Validation: the new client regressions failed before the repair; the command regression also failed against the previous production parser through a Go overlay. The repaired full Go suite passed across 194 packages, the application built, and the changed packages passed the pinned CI linter v2.11.4 with Go 1.26.9. Focused client and command regressions also passed with Go 1.26.9, including preview without saved state, confirmed recovery, guarded stop, and negative ownership cases with no persistence or mutations. The commit is signed and GitHub reports a valid signature.

After #7681 merged, the branch was updated normally to signed head c6e81be2aa9f59f08be82da85b2e5f7d1ff62f44, incorporating main 444defe650b9aba558392a3c97f6d15cc6b4cbcf. The client, cluster command and CI harness packages all passed again on Go 1.26.9 at that current head, and the mirror-helper shell regression passed. The built CLI also initialized a disposable project successfully. Native CI has restarted at this head, and its completion plus a current-head semantic review remain required. This is a source repair, not proof of the real AWS recovery/lifecycle/cleanup trial: #6399 and this draft remain open behind devantler-tech/aws#38. The separate failed-create identity-capture gap in #7591 remains open as well.

Resolved the named-read permission regression in 4cabb25bd5f5a388a283d52380744f3d10063b8b. Provider status now describes only the selected cluster; recovery and lifecycle ownership checks still require corroborated regional provenance. A regression using native named JSON and an eks:ListClusters denial failed before the repair and passes afterward: status succeeds, while ownership verification still refuses unavailable evidence.

The current head is 28629e7000248d9288758f2fb1c7dc30fe266359. It also repairs both findings from the completed CodeRabbit review at 4cabb25bd5f5a388a283d52380744f3d10063b8b: a discovered legacy EKS target must match its saved config region before the existing creation-state check, and the credential budget now includes reconciliation using step names. The legacy service regression failed before the repair and passes afterward; its controls refuse a different region, missing target binding and missing creation evidence before a mutation job is registered. Both review threads are resolved.

Current local validation passes: 194 Go test packages, CLI build and help smoke, both affected packages uncached, and pinned golangci-lint v2.11.4 under the declared Go 1.26.9 toolchain with zero issues. The unchanged documentation passed its earlier 194-page build. At the current head, native CI, Go validation and CodeQL succeed; all 91 reported checks have completed with no pending or failing checks.

The selected CodeRabbit review summary, updated at 2026-10-12 00:39:37 UTC after the authenticated current-head request, names this exact head and reports no actionable comments. Its verdict classifier returns GREEN. All 16 review threads are resolved. The selected review reports passing function documentation coverage of 91.76%.

The selected summary's OpenGrep tool warning names the harness's intentional execution of the checked-in workflow snippet through Bash, with test-controlled stub executables and a temporary working directory. The command is not supplied by a user or fetched comment, so this is not an introduced command-injection path. This records the specific refutation at the reviewed head. The earlier raw-recovery-log suggestion was withdrawn in its resolved thread; those logs contain AWS identity details and remain runner-local.

This remains a draft pending the real EKS recovery lifecycle trial. The fresh read-only capacity run completed successfully at reviewed main and reports an applied Standard On-Demand quota of zero in Frankfurt, with no active instances, fleets or Auto Scaling groups. It created no resources. The trial remains blocked by devantler-tech/aws#38; the published default of five is not usable applied capacity. Resume with a fresh base/current-head review and the ownership-recovery, lifecycle and cleanup trial when verified applied capacity permits it.

The worker prerequisite is now checked against the exact acceptance path: the prepared recovery trial requires recovered stop and start followed by unchanged live cluster identity. Those operations refuse a target without node groups, and start requests worker capacity. Ownership binding itself does not require workers, but a bind/delete-only trial would be partial evidence under the existing acceptance. The capacity report inventories EC2 resources rather than EKS clusters, so it also does not establish absence of a control-plane-only legacy target. No suitable retained target was established, and no cloud action or acceptance change was made for this assessment.

The EU-region fallback was checked with the same read-only capacity workflow from merged main b08bea601e8e6e82a40673e373a416bb6b3ed16a. Completed reads on 2026-10-12 report applied Standard On-Demand capacity of 0.0 vCPUs in Stockholm (03:23 UTC), Ireland (03:25 UTC), London (03:27 UTC) and Paris (03:24 UTC), in addition to the Frankfurt result above. All four new runs authenticated successfully, reported the applied quota value and created no resources. Moving this trial to one of those regions does not provide verified Standard On-Demand worker capacity. These reads establish neither a Spot quota nor an inventory of EKS control planes; the real lifecycle acceptance remains unchanged and blocked. Re-read applied capacity immediately before any future worker trial and retain the maintainer's five-vCPU ceiling.
