📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe EKS client validates effective EKS and STS credentials against the upgrade wait deadline and retains them for upgrade requests. Repeated AWS configuration freezing preserves captured credentials, expiry, and SDK configuration. The CloudFormation client uses the captured endpoint for node-group inventory. The upgrader validates credentials before submission and releases them after the upgrade. Tests cover credential lifetime, signing, endpoint selection, and upgrade behavior. EKS create identity tests use a dedicated readiness timeout. Priority: ➖ Normal

Added behavioral explanations for the touched functions and regression fixtures to address the docstring-coverage warning. This commit changes comments only; the full functional revision passed all 184 Go packages, full lint, canonical generation, the 193-page docs build, and credential-free EKS project initialization. @coderabbitai full review |

Validation for head
The first substantive CodeRabbit review reported no actionable code findings. Its docstring warning was addressed in the comment-only final commit; a full review of that exact head has been requested and is still awaiting its verdict. There are currently no review threads. This remains a draft: CI is still running, the required-check aggregate has not appeared, and the configured code-quality gate has no verified per-head result. No merge or bypass was attempted. Live AWS graduation remains separate in #6927 and the upgrade feature stays experimental. |

Follow-up at head The Go validation workflow is green. CodeQL remains blocked by the extraction failure tracked in #7131: the first attempt ended with a runner shutdown signal; the documented failed-job retry also failed during extraction, with the log ending after a small source file took 39 seconds. A Talos system-test leg is still running. The required aggregate is missing and the configured code-quality gate has no verified per-head result, so the PR stays draft. No coverage reduction, repository-setting change, or merge bypass was made. |

The lifetime check retrieved credentials once, but the upgrade request and later identity checks retrieved them again. A refreshing provider supplied through service options could then sign the irreversible update with a different identity or a shorter session. The client now keeps the validated values and pins them onto every later EKS and STS call. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

At head This directly exercises #7246's hermetic SDK-boundary acceptance, which explicitly requires no cloud resources. It does not run or claim the separately tracked real AWS upgrade trial in #7483. Experimental gating remains unchanged. |

The security repair is published at The built CLI initializes an EKS project with empty isolated configuration. An actual AWS SDK signing trial with synthetic credentials and a local transport retains the validated EKS/STS identities, refuses overlapping refresh, restores the provider on release, and rejects short-lived sessions before requests. No cloud resources are created by these trials. The whole-root source scan uses native CI's govulncheck v1.8.0, Go 1.26.9, and the official database modified at 2026-10-08T22:31:09Z. All thirteen newly published reachable advisories are absent; every remaining reachable finding matches the unchanged allowlist. Fresh native CI and a current-head review remain required. #7641 must merge first. |

I reviewed the full 22-file diff against freshly fetched main and the integration against previously reviewed head 6aa85ae. The EKS credential implementation, tests and generated documentation are unchanged; the existing main CI and Flux changes are preserved exactly. The five security files match #7641, including the official Go archive hashes and module checksums. Independent read-only review found no actionable integration defect. Frozen credential capture retains session expiration and endpoint precedence, overlapping validation cannot replace the held upgrade session, and release restores the selected provider. The upgrade remains experimental.
The full root Go suite, affected lint, four affected race suites and CLI build pass. Actual SDK signing with synthetic credentials/local transport verifies retained EKS/STS identities, overlap refusal, release and insufficient-lifetime rejection. The built CLI initializes an EKS project in an empty isolated environment. The whole-root native-version source scan removes all thirteen new Go advisories; remaining findings match the unchanged allowlist. Signature verification passes. No check, risk acceptance or live ownership/deletion boundary is relaxed.
Complete current-PR comments, reviews, threads and check-runs contain no current provider verdict or reported unresolved finding. There are zero unresolved review threads. #7641 must merge first; fresh native CI remains required. These local trials create no cloud resources and do not claim the separate real-provider trial in #7483.
Verdict: no P0/P1 findings

I reviewed the full 17-file EKS diff against landed main 4dfe77d, including credential capture, lifetime validation, release, endpoint precedence, constructor behavior, generated documentation and regression coverage. This signed integration absorbs the merged security dependency. Its entire source tree is byte-identical to reviewed and validated parent 9ba958c; no credential or generated-code behavior changes. Source comparison and signature verification pass, and current main is an ancestor of this head.
At that identical source tree, the full Go suite, affected lint, four affected-package race suites, CLI build, isolated EKS project initialization, actual SDK signing trial with synthetic credentials/local transport, and native-version whole-root vulnerability scan passed. All thirteen new Go findings are absent without new risk acceptances. These trials create no cloud resources and do not claim the separate real-provider trial in #7483.
Complete direct comments, reviews, check-runs and threads at the new head contain no provider verdict or reported unresolved finding; there are zero unresolved threads. - Codex: the same read reports the account usage limit in force since 2026-10-09T18:11:46Z, with no review served since. Recovery needs account action.
- Cursor Bugbot: the same read reports no serving evidence; its last known state is the user/team usage-limit notice.
What changed since the round at c2624529: one commit, a merge of the default branch made by GitHub (verified signature, parents c2624529 and c0c88d3e). I compared the change against its base before and after that merge: the two patches are identical apart from line offsets (17 files). So nothing in this PR's own content moved.
Independent read of the production code (this lane had not reviewed it before; the earlier rounds were the Codex lane's):
- Lifetime check and pinning. The check now reads the credentials the EKS and STS clients actually use after all options have run, and then signs every later EKS and STS call of that upgrade with exactly the values it checked. A provider that refreshes mid-upgrade can therefore no longer swap identity or expiry. Temporary credentials with no known expiry, and a wait with no deadline, are refused, as before.
- Ordering. Validation now runs before the final ownership check, so that check and the version update share one signer. The release is deferred only after validation succeeds, so a refused overlapping upgrade cannot release the credentials another upgrade still holds.
- Concurrency. The early "already held" read is advisory; the decision is repeated under the write lock before the values are stored, so two upgrades on one client cannot both win.
- Re-freezing a snapshot. An already frozen selection is returned from its stored configuration without calling the loader again. Its region and the stored configuration's region are set together at first freeze, so reusing them cannot blank the region.
- CloudFormation endpoint. The node-group inventory client now gets the captured endpoint first and explicit options after, the same precedence as EKS and STS.
Non-blocking notes, no change requested here:
- The node-group inventory (CloudFormation) calls are not signed with the pinned upgrade credentials; only EKS and STS are. The upgrade path's mutations all go through EKS, so this does not weaken the guarantee the PR states.
- When an already frozen selection is re-frozen with a different region, endpoint capture is not repeated for the new region. Captured endpoints come from explicit settings rather than the region, so I see no wrong result, but it is worth a test if region changes on frozen selections become common.
Evidence at this head: every check is success (unit, coverage, all Docker system tests, vulnerability scans, managed analysis). Review threads: 0 unresolved of 8. The real-provider upgrade trial remains separate under #7483, as the PR body states; the upgrade stays experimental.
Verdict: no P0/P1 findings

Why
EKS operations could change the selected connection settings or lose the expiry of a captured session. An upgrade could then begin with credentials that expire before the operation finishes.
What
Keep the chosen session and connection settings consistent, and reject credentials that cannot safely cover an upgrade. Explicit client settings retain precedence and the upgrade remains experimental.
Related: #7483 preserves the separate AWS trial and its real-provider evaluation gate.
