  • New README tab on profiles showing the developer's GitHub profile README
  • Sanitized with an allowlist: formatting, links and images from GitHub's hosts only; scripts, styles and classes removed
  • Cached for a day (4 minutes when it has uploaded images, whose links expire); GitHub is only called on that tab
  • Empty state when there's no README, and a separate message when GitHub doesn't answer

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a README tab to user profiles, displaying the README from the user’s GitHub profile repository with supported formatting, links, and GitHub-hosted images.
    • README content refreshes daily, with shorter refresh intervals for some images.
    • Shows a clear message when a README is missing or GitHub is unavailable.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Pinned commits now appear only on the commits tab, not on the README or replies tabs.

Walkthrough

The profile page adds a README tab. It retrieves rendered README content from a user’s GitHub profile repository, sanitizes and caches that content, and displays it with formatting. The tab displays separate states for missing README content and GitHub errors.

Changes: Profile README

Layer / File(s) Summary
Retrieve, sanitize, and cache README content
composer.json, app/Queries/GitHubReadmeQuery.php, tests/Unit/Queries/GitHubReadmeQueryTest.php
GitHubReadmeQuery fetches GitHub-rendered README HTML, sanitizes it, and caches successful, missing, and failed results. Tests cover content filtering and cache behavior.
Add README tab data to profile response
app/Http/Requests/ShowUserRequest.php, app/Http/Controllers/UserController.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/UserControllerTest.php, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
The request accepts the readme tab. The controller supplies README data for that tab and an empty commit paginator. Other tabs retain their existing response data. Tests and documentation describe the tab behavior.
Render README tab content
resources/js/pages/user/show.tsx, resources/js/components/profile-readme.tsx, resources/css/app.css
The profile page adds a README tab and renders README HTML or missing and unavailable states. Styles format README content.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 1fe7e

Hovering over README can contact GitHub before the tab is opened. This is a bounded issue to fix or accept before merging; the earlier response-format concern is resolved.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 1fe7e

Server-side sanitization and account-based identity selection substantially constrain the new HTML-rendering risk. However, unauthenticated concurrent requests can multiply GitHub calls before caching takes effect, potentially disrupting README loading and other integrations sharing the same API capacity. Production traffic controls remain unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new unauthenticated README path can amplify calls against shared GitHub API capacity. Concurrent misses independently perform account lookup and README retrieval before publishing their cache entries; there is no single-flight control or application throttle on the inspected public profile route. An attacker needs neither profile ownership nor GitHub credentials to trigger this work. Exhaustion could affect other users and shared-client operations, including SSH-key synchronization. Existing cache TTLs mitigate sequential repetition, but not overlapping misses; actual exhaustion depends on deployment-level controls and upstream quotas.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Content influence is scoped to a profile owner's GitHub README, but API-capacity consumption is not isolated per profile. README fetching and SSH-key synchronization use the same default GitHub client and, when configured, the same OAuth application credentials. Capacity exhaustion can therefore cross profile boundaries without granting credential access or administrative authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A guest can issue overlapping README-tab requests for an uncached public profile. Each request that passes both cache checks can independently perform GitHub lookup and retrieval. Bursts or requests across uncached profiles can consume shared upstream capacity; cache hits and failure markers mitigate subsequent sequential requests but do not establish a shared request budget.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The sanitizer uses explicit element and attribute allowlists, drops executable and interactive elements, excludes classes, IDs, styles and event handlers, limits input length, and disables relative URLs. Media is restricted to HTTPS on listed GitHub hosts; links permit HTTP, HTTPS and mailto and receive forced isolation attributes. Authored tests cover scripts, handlers, external images, srcset and several dangerous elements, but were not executed during this assessment.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Interruption before cache publication causes a later refetch rather than publication of raw HTML. Overlapping failure and success writes cannot replace sanitized content with a failure marker because they use separate keys. The main unresolved containment issue is duplicate upstream work, not a demonstrated loss of content ownership or sanitization.
  • observed — The README link inherits PageTabs' enabled prefetch setting. Although the server fetches only for requests selecting the README tab, such a request can be prefetched before the visitor opens that tab.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Coalesce concurrent README misses by GitHub ID and apply an upstream-capacity budget to public README loading. These controls address duplicate work and shared-quota abuse separately. Consider disabling README prefetch if upstream access should require an explicit tab visit.

Minor · Performance & Scalability · Quick win

Disable hover prefetch for the README tab.

PageTabs defaults to prefetching every tab link. Hovering over README for more than 75 ms can therefore request the README and call GitHub even when the visitor never opens the tab. This breaks the stated on-open loading behavior. Add a per-tab prefetch override and disable it for README; keep prefetching for the other tabs. (inertiajs.com)

#1178)

The users table lost its username column when handles moved to profiles
(#1157), but the who-to-follow API (#990) and the README tests (#886) were
written against it: the dismiss route bound users by username, and the
username filter of the suggestions validated and looked it up on users.
They now go through the profile's handle, like the other API routes. The
API keeps calling it username, as its user resources do.
