feat: pick emoji from a button in the commit and reply composers - #252
New emoji button in the commit and reply composers
It opens the same searchable picker as reactions in remotes, so there's one emoji picker in the app
The emoji goes in where the caret was, or replaces the selected text, within the composer's length limit, whether the picker was opened with the mouse or the keyboard
The caret lands right after the emoji, back in the composer

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added a searchable emoji picker to commit and reply composers.
Selecting an emoji inserts it at the cursor or replaces selected text, then restores the cursor position.
Emoji insertion respects each composer’s text limit, and the picker is disabled while a request is processing.
Bug Fixes
Pressing Enter while composing text with an input method, including Safari’s composition-related Enter event, no longer selects an emoji.
Documentation
Updated the guide to describe emoji picker behavior in commit and reply composers.
Hi @hbenabdallah, thanks for this. I'd started on an emoji button for the commit composer before I saw your PR, so I'd rather help get this one in than open a second one.
Here's how mine behaves, for comparison (commit composer, desktop, light theme, local dev data):
It reuses the reactions picker, inserts where the caret was, stays open for several picks, puts your most-used emoji first, and opens with ⌘/Ctrl+Shift+E.
A few things from my version that might be useful here, if you and the maintainers want them:
Reuse the reactions picker. Since this PR was opened, feat: react to remote messages with emoji #452 added a searchable EmojiPicker in components/chat/message-reactions.tsx, with usage-based ordering. Building the composer button on that one would avoid shipping two pickers that look and search differently, and would drop most of the new emoji-picker.tsx / lib/emoji-picker.ts.
Caret when opened from the keyboard. Right now, opening the picker with the keyboard inserts at the end of the text. Saving selectionStart/selectionEnd when the popover opens, and putting the caret back after the inserted emoji on close, keeps the insertion where you were typing.
Docs. The repo's guidelines ask for user-visible changes to be added to KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md ("Code, emoji, and mentions" section).
Two more that are probably product decisions, so they could be a follow-up rather than part of this PR:
A ⌘/Ctrl+Shift+E shortcut (which would also need a row in keyboard-shortcuts-dialog.tsx and the knowledge-base shortcuts table).
Keeping the picker open for several picks, as X does.
My branch has these with unit tests if any of it helps: . I'm happy to open a PR against your branch, or leave it for a follow-up after this merges. Whatever's easiest for you and the maintainers.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The commit and reply composers now provide an emoji picker. Selecting an emoji inserts it at the textarea selection or appends it when no selection is available, subject to the composer’s body limit. Successful insertion updates the body and restores the caret. The picker ignores keyboard events during native input composition.

Text insertion and caret handling resources/js/lib/text-selection.ts, resources/js/hooks/use-emoji-insertion.ts, tests/Unit/TextSelection.test.ts, tests/Unit/EmojiInsertion.test.tsx, tests/draft-images.config.ts
Adds selection-aware insertion with a maximum length, body updates, and focus and caret restoration. Tests cover insertion positions, replacement, appending, length limits, and focus behavior.
Adds an emoji picker button to both composers and connects selected emoji to the insertion hook. The knowledge base describes picker behavior and references the button.
Ignores picker keyboard events during native input composition. Tests check that Enter selects the highlighted emoji only when composition is inactive.

The emoji feature is generally mergeable, but rejected insertions should preserve the caret in restored drafts.

Thanks @ascendaone-com, applied all three: the button now uses the reactions picker, inserts where the caret was (keyboard too), and is documented in the knowledge base. I left the shortcut and multi-pick for a follow-up.

Restore the saved selection after a rejected insertion.
When a restored draft is at its length limit and the caret is at (0,0), an over-limit emoji returns null. This branch calls focus() without restoring the selection. Both composers can then run moveCaretToEnd from their isRestored focus handler, which moves (0,0) to the end. The user loses the caret position after the rejected insertion.
Save both selection endpoints before calling insertAtSelection, then restore them after focus().

In the emoji insertion flow around insertAtSelection, save the textarea’s
selection start and end before attempting insertion, using the body length when
no element is available. If insertion is rejected, restore both endpoints after
focusing the textarea so the caret position is preserved.
