fix: require multiple root commits for hot topics - #1508
Headlines with only one root commit currently qualify as Hot topics. Require at least two eligible root commits, accepting fewer than five topics or none rather than filling empty slots with single-commit headlines.
Changes
Filter the existing eight-hour aggregation before ranking and the five-topic limit.
Count root commits, not distinct authors; retain approval, visibility, mute/block filters and the existing ranking formula. Replies do not count.
Update regression coverage and recap/sidebar fixtures for the two-root requirement, including skipping recap generation for singleton topics.
Document the requirement in the knowledge base.
Validation
Reproduced the singleton regression with the updated query test before applying the fix.
Targeted PHP tests across the query, recap jobs, refresh command and shared Inertia props: 95 passed.
composer test:lint: passed with existing TypeScript warnings in unchanged tests.
composer test:types: passed.
composer test:type-coverage: passed, 100%.
bun run test:unit: 301 passed.
vendor/bin/pint --dirty --format agent and git diff --check: passed.
Visual and device testing is inapplicable: this changes backend eligibility only, with no markup, styling or mobile interaction changes. Existing sidebar and search consumers handle shorter and empty lists; Inertia prop tests passed. No screenshots or device runs were performed.
Independent review
A separate read-only reviewer returned PASS, with no blockers, for the complete seven-file diff:
Review covered correctness, regressions, architecture, meaningful tests, query callers and duplicate-link constraints. The reviewer independently checked the diff and whitespace, assessed visual/device review as inapplicable, and reviewed the supplied validation results without rerunning the full suite.
Limitations
Hosted CI results are pending. This PR does not change headline-page access or require distinct authors.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Updates
Hot topics now appear only when they have at least two eligible top-level commits visible to you. Replies do not count toward this minimum, so topics with only one qualifying commit may no longer appear.
HotHeadlinesQuery now excludes headlines with one or fewer commits. The documentation and query, recap, and sidebar tests reflect the updated threshold.

Recap generation test fixtures tests/Feature/Commands/RefreshHeadlineSummariesTest.php, tests/Unit/Jobs/GenerateHeadlineSummaryTest.php, tests/Unit/Jobs/GenerateHotHeadlineSummariesTest.php
Refresh and summary-generation fixtures use multiple attached commits in scenarios that exercise recap generation. The no-provider test also covers a single-post case.
Sidebar test fixtures tests/Unit/Middleware/HandleInertiaRequestsTest.php
Hot-topic sidebar fixtures use multiple linked commits in ranking, recap-loading, expired-recap, and hidden-author scenarios.
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#1437: Adds reply context to hot-topic recaps; this change updates recap test fixtures to reflect the root-commit threshold.

Update query, recap, refresh-command, and sidebar tests for the two-root requirement, including skipping singleton recap generation.
Document that Hot topic lists may be shorter or empty.

Description
tests/Unit/Queries/HotHeadlinesQueryTest.php
Update eligibility assertions and ranking fixtures for multiple roots.
Test a high-ranking singleton against the five-topic limit.
If filtering happens after the limit, a singleton can displace an eligible fifth topic. Add a high-scoring singleton to this fixture and retain the five-name assertion.

Recheck hot eligibility before publishing the recap.
If the weaker root is deleted during summarize, the selected bodies and a null summary timestamp stay unchanged. CreateHeadlineSummary can then publish a recap for a topic with only one eligible root.
Recheck eligibility under the publication lock. Add a test that deletes the weaker root through DeleteCommit inside the provider callback.
