Clicking the Image quote on a Remotes reply could show “Could not load this message. Try again.” even though the original image was available. It now scrolls to the original attachment and briefly highlights it, including when older history must load first.
Changes
Give image-only attachments the same message jump target used by text and voice bubbles, with the existing highlight treatment. Preserve the text target for messages with a caption.
Cover direct and org replies, already-loaded and paginated originals, captioned and image-only messages, the first rendered jump target, scrolling, and highlight expiry.
Keep the existing loader and message endpoints.
Validation
All checks ran locally on the reviewed revision:
composer test:lint and composer test:types: passed. Existing lint warnings remain in unrelated tests; none in the changed test.
CI PHP coverage command, with six workers and an isolated PostgreSQL database: 5,091 passed, 27,584 assertions, 100% coverage.
bun run build, final client types/lint, and git diff --check: passed.
Real reply → Push → click Image quote: message POST returned 201 and the original image was reached without the error. Repeated jumps reuse loaded history; image viewer opens and dismisses normally.
Visual evidence
Real local Laravel app with fictional conversations and the same seeded data on production base and fix. Desktop/mobile screenshots use Chrome, 2× capture. The original image is beyond the first history page. Both themes and all required sizes were checked in direct and org chats: 1440×900, 1366×650, 390×844.
First load, image jump, and polling each measured zero layout shift in all 12 scenarios, with zero horizontal overflow and no page errors. Client navigation measured CLS 0; tiny text-animation shifts immediately following input were excluded by the standard CLS definition.
iPhone 18 Pro, iOS 27.0, Safari simulator: tapped direct and org image quotes, scrolled through older history, returned to present, and repeated the jump after an inbox → conversation client transition. The original image remained visible with Safari controls and safe areas. With the software keyboard open, the composer and Push action remained usable; tapping the quote dismissed the keyboard and reached the image. No hardware or Android testing.
The reply preview quotes the caption, so jumping highlights that text. The comparison below uses identical data on the previous PR head (3f9bd65c, before) and the final head (4e242501, after). Direct and org caption jumps, cached repeats, and image-only jumps were checked again in all 12 viewport/theme combinations: load, jump, polling, and overflow measured zero; no page errors.
Fresh iPhone 18 Pro / iOS 27.0 Safari simulator checks reached the caption in a direct chat after a fresh load and an org after the inbox → org client transition: Direct caption · Org caption. The screenshots show the final scroll position after the transient ring expired. The original keyboard evidence above was not recaptured for this condition-only change.

Original image-only captures were made on 3f9bd65c; that component output is preserved by the final condition. Caption captures below exercise the final revision.
Limitations
Local app evidence; deployment and hosted CI are separate. Native coverage is a Safari simulator, not physical hardware; Android was unavailable. Recordings were inspected through sampled contact-sheet frames. Existing navigation text animations can emit small recent-input layout-shift entries; the changed image jump measured zero.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Jumping to image-only messages now works in direct and organization chats, whether or not the image has a caption. If the message is older and not yet loaded, it is loaded before navigation.
The target image scrolls into view instantly and is briefly highlighted, making it easier to spot. This applies to saved messages with no text or voice note.

Walkthrough
Persisted image messages with an empty body and no voice note now expose their message ID and flash styling. Tests cover quoted-image jumps across direct and organization chats, with and without pagination and captions.
Changes: Image-only message jumps
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Image target and jump validation resources/js/components/chat/conversation-thread.tsx, tests/Unit/ChatScroll.test.tsx
Image wrappers expose the persisted message ID and flash styling. Tests cover paginated loading, centered instant scrolling, and flash-marker removal across both chat kinds and caption states.
No merge-blocking issue remains identified; the image-only jump tests check the anchor needed for navigation.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 3f9bd
The change reuses existing conversation navigation and history loading. It makes persisted image messages addressable without adding an endpoint, expanding privileges, or making pending images addressable. No material security risk introduced or worsened by this PR was identified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed behavior is bounded to message targeting within a rendered conversation. The new attribute does not select another conversation, alter request authority, or add an attachment-fetch operation. The existing history loader remains keyed by the current direct or organization target.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The new DOM target derives from the persisted message’s ID, not its body, image description, or URL. Pending messages remain outside that addressing contract. These are client-side identity constraints; they are not evidence that server-side authorization has been independently verified.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The existing transition controls remain in use: a new jump aborts its predecessor, unmount aborts navigation, and abort checks prevent subsequent lookup and scrolling after asynchronous loading. Pagination shares loads per target, clears loading state after failure, removes shared-load entries in finally, and stops when history cannot contain the ID or makes no progress. Cancellation does not cancel the shared page request; any completed merge remains target-keyed. This behavior predates the PR.
observed — Both production conversation hosts key ConversationThread by targetKey, so switching conversations remounts the component and invokes its existing navigation-abort cleanup. The image-target change does not introduce a separate ownership or recovery mechanism.
