#894 asks for a badge for contributing "in any way", including issues and pull requests. This PR counts code contributions only: anyone with a commit on production, usually through a merged pull request. That's the same list the About page shows, and the same criterion #741 uses. Counting opened issues or unmerged pull requests would need a GitHub search per user, and the search API allows about 30 requests a minute. So this leaves #894 open in case the wider version is still wanted.
/dev/null is built in the open, and the About page already lists everyone with a commit in this repository. Nothing on their own profile showed it, although every other kind of participation has an achievement badge. This adds a contributor badge: anyone among the repository's contributors, as the About page lists them, unlocks it and earns a flat 25 XP, like shell shocked earns 100 XP.
This is an alternative to #741, which adds a similar badge. The differences:
It reads the list the About page already caches, through the existing ContributorsQuery, instead of a second query and cache, so profiles and the About page share one GitHub fetch. That keeps it smaller: +223/−42 lines (+104/−38 without tests, partly from moving the existing fetch into its own method), against +242/−4 (+110/−3 without tests) in feat: add an upstream badge for /dev/null contributors #741.
It keeps feat: add an upstream badge for /dev/null contributors #741's good idea of falling back to the last known list while GitHub is down, but keeps that copy for a week rather than forever, so the cache entry has a TTL as the data guidelines ask.
Changes
Achievement::Contributor: the label, description, git-pull-request icon, and a target of 1.
ContributorsQuery::includes(User $user) checks whether the user's GitHub account is in the cached contributor list. It matches by account ID, not handle, since a handle can change on either side, and it reuses the existing one-hour cache, so profiles add no GitHub requests of their own.
ContributorsQuery now keeps every successful list for a week as a fallback. When GitHub doesn't answer, that list is used for a minute before GitHub is asked again, so an outage no longer locks contributors' badges or empties the About page. The list is empty only when GitHub has not answered for a week.
Once that fallback exists, no request waits for GitHub. An expired list is served right away and cached for another minute, so concurrent requests don't ask GitHub too. The refresh then runs through defer() after the response, or after the job or command in queue and console contexts. The fetch moved, unchanged, into refresh().
Profiles never wait for GitHub, not even on a cold cache. When no list is cached at all, includes() returns false at once, and only the first profile request in a minute schedules a refresh after the response, using a short-lived :refreshing marker. The About page still waits for the list in that case, so right after the cache is cleared it doesn't wrongly say GitHub is unreachable.
UserAchievementsQuery adds the badge and its 25 XP in the same way as shell shocked, including a contributor entry in the XP breakdown, mirrored in the XpBreakdown type.
The badge popover and dialog get the new icon, and the dialog's XP footnote mentions +25/contributor.
KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md now lists 16 badges, has a row for the new badge, and describes the About page's outage behaviour.
Tests that strictly mock GitHubProvider and render a profile now expect contributors().
New contributors can wait a few hours for the badge, since GitHub itself can take that long to count a contribution and the list is cached for an hour.

Visual evidence
These screenshots come from a local build. Locally the app uses the null GitHub provider, so a test account, @demo-contributor, was added to the contributor list by hand. They were taken with browser viewport emulation unless noted.
After merging production, which added whoopsie as the 16th badge, contributor is the 17th:
Rank block at 1440×900, light
Profile at 390×844, light
Dialog with 17 badges, light
Dialog with 17 badges, dark
Before merging production (16 badges, without whoopsie)
The badge popover with its tooltip could not be opened through browser automation after the merge, so it is shown here from a manual desktop session before the merge. The tile itself did not change.
Badge popover with tooltip, light
Profile at 1440×900, dark
Dialog, badge locked, light
The new tile matches the existing badges: the same chip, icon size and mono label. There is no clipping or overflow at either width, and no horizontal overflow at 390 pixels. With 17 badges, contributor sits alone in the last row of the dialog's two-column grid. Layout shift on load, measured with a buffered PerformanceObserver, was 0 at 1440×900 and at 390×844, both before and after the merge.
Device verification
No mobile interaction changed: the badge uses the existing popover, tooltip and dialog. The phone layout was checked only with Chromium viewport emulation at 390×844, not on hardware or a simulator.
Independent review
A separate, read-only agent session reviewed the change. It was given the task, the repository guidelines, the full diff and the screenshots above.

Verdict: CODE: PASS, VISUAL: PASS, with no blocking findings.
The latest round reviewed the change for CodeRabbit's note about profiles waiting on a cold cache. It checked:
the cold path, including a stale :refreshing marker, a failed refresh, and the interaction with the About page's synchronous fetch;
the two badge reads in CommitController::store, which produce no false unlock toast;
how defer() behaves in queue and console contexts.
In that round the reviewer ran the full suite (5658 passed).
The round before reviewed the merge of production (head 9ef14a8b). It checked:
that all six conflicted files keep both whoopsie and contributor;
that nothing from either side was lost and nothing unrelated slipped in, since the effective diff is the same 11 files as before;
how the change interacts with production's GitHubProvider changes, whose contributors() method is unchanged.
In that round the reviewer also ran the full suite (5657 passed), bun run test:types and bun run test:unit.
Earlier rounds led to more accurate knowledge base wording on timing and outages. A later round reviewed the change made for CodeRabbit's note about requests waiting for GitHub. For the deferred refresh, the reviewer checked how it behaves in HTTP, queue and artisan contexts, the backoff and TTLs, and that exceptions other than HTTP client errors are reported rather than thrown.
Non-blocking notes:
No test asserts that a failed deferred refresh on a cold cache caches the failure without retrying more often. That path is covered through the About page's synchronous fetch.
No test combines a failure partway through pagination with an existing fallback list. It runs through the same, already covered branch.
A deferred refresh is skipped when the response is an error (status 400 or higher) or the queued job fails. The fallback is then still cached for a minute, and the next request schedules the refresh again.
Under Octane, a deferred refresh holds its worker after the response while it waits for GitHub. That is no longer than the request used to wait.
Limits of the review:
The coverage run, type-coverage, lint and static analysis at the merge head are the implementer's; the reviewer did not rerun them.
The deferred path was not exercised live in a running server, queue worker or Octane.
The reviewer judged the screenshots, not a live device.
Limitations
There is no capture from the base branch. The locked state stands in for "before", since the base has no contributor tile.
Not captured after the merge: the popover. Not captured at all: the popover in dark mode, mobile in dark mode, the mobile tap states, and the "+N more" overflow row.
Locally the app uses the null GitHub provider, so the real contributors endpoint was exercised only through the existing HttpGitHubProvider tests.
If the cached list expires or recovers between the two badge reads in CommitController::store, an unrelated commit could show an unlock toast. The fallback list makes this much less likely.
The deferred refresh was verified through tests, not in a production-like server, queue worker or Octane setup.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added a Contributor badge worth 25 XP for qualifying GitHub contributors. Eligibility is based on GitHub account identity; bots and AI agents are excluded. Contributor status remains even if activity is deleted.
Achievement details now show contributor XP and badge progress.
Bug Fixes
Contributor information can remain available during GitHub outages using the last list received within the past week. Without a recent list, the page reports the outage.
Documentation
Updated badge eligibility, award timing, and outage information. The badge may take hours to appear.
Anyone among the contributors of the repository, as GitHub lists them
on the About page, earns the contributor badge and 25 XP. They are
matched by their GitHub account, and the badge reads the contributor
list that is already cached for an hour, so profiles add no GitHub
calls of their own.
When GitHub doesn't answer, the contributor list falls back to the last
one it gave in the past week for a minute, instead of being empty. So
an outage no longer costs contributors their badge and its XP, and the
About page keeps showing the list.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to e83a4
The change uses GitHub account IDs rather than mutable handles and does not introduce an access or privilege grant in the inspected paths. The main risk is temporary badge, XP, or level-notification inconsistency during cache initialization, outages, or overlapping refreshes.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The cache is shared by configured repository, so an incorrect snapshot can affect every evaluated matching user, not just the initiating request. The inspected downstream effects are contributor badges, 25 XP, computed levels, and possible level-up notifications; no access-control or privilege grant was found in those consumers.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Public profile callers select a route-bound User, whereas mutation-side badge checks use the authenticated current user. Neither path supplies contributor records or repository parameters. GitHub remains the external membership authority, and strict ID matching prevents handle-only impersonation through this lookup.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Successful pagination completes locally before the snapshot is cached. Caught HTTP failures discard partial results, use the last successful snapshot when available, and cache the outcome for one minute without extending fallback retention. With no snapshot, membership is temporarily false; the cold deferred-refresh claim expires after one minute, permitting recovery after interruption.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — If stronger consistency or upstream-request containment is required, extend single-flight protection to fallback refreshes and prevent older refresh generations from overwriting newer snapshots. This is a hardening option, not a verified security finding.

Explanation
The title "feat: add a contributor achievement badge" matches the main change. The PR adds a contributor badge that awards 25 XP to users listed among repository contributors, and the changed files (Achievement enum, ContributorsQuery, UserAchievementsQuery, and the achievements UI) all support this. The title is short, specific, and follows the conventional commit style. It does not describe the one-week fallback cache or the deferred refresh, but the title does not need to cover every detail.

Explanation
Issue #894 proposes a badge for GitHub accounts that contributed to the repository in any way, including issues, pull requests, and commits. The reviewed implementation checks only the cached ContributorsQuery list. That list represents repository contributors and does not establish eligibility for issue-only or pull-request-only participation. The badge, 25 XP award, UI changes, documentation, and automated tests cover the badge flow, but they do not cover the full participation scope described by #894.

Once there is a list from the past week, an expired one is served right
away and cached for another minute, and GitHub is asked after the
response. So no profile or About page request waits for GitHub, neither
for the hourly refresh nor during an outage. GitHub is only asked while
the request waits when there is no list at all.

Avoid blocking profile requests on a cold contributor cache.
When both cache entries are absent, includes() refreshes synchronously. Concurrent profile requests can each wait up to five seconds for GitHub before a failure is cached; a multi-page refresh can take longer. This makes profile rendering dependent on GitHub during a cold start or cache reset. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Return an unavailable result immediately on a cold cache and start a single background refresh.

Profiles now get no contributor list at once when none is cached, and
only the first of them in a minute asks GitHub, after the response. The
About page still waits for the list, so it doesn't claim GitHub is
unreachable right after the cache is cleared.
@coderabbitai Thanks, the outside-diff finding about profiles waiting on a cold cache (UserAchievementsQuery.php:94) is fixed in e83a4b5.
includes() now never waits for GitHub. When neither the current nor the last list is cached, it returns false at once. Only the first such caller in a minute schedules a single refresh() through defer(), guarded by a :refreshing marker added with Cache::add for a minute. The main key is deliberately left alone there, so the About page, which still waits on a cold cache, can fetch the list itself instead of showing "GitHub can't be reached" for a minute. Warm and fallback behaviour is unchanged. A new test checks that two profile lookups on a cold cache make no GitHub call, and that exactly one call follows after the response.
@coderabbitai About the Linked Issues warning: the narrower scope is deliberate. This PR counts code contributions only, meaning anyone with a commit on production, usually through a merged pull request. That's the list the About page already shows and the criterion #741 uses. Counting opened issues or unmerged pull requests would need a GitHub search per user, under a limit of about 30 search requests a minute. So the PR now says "Part of #894" instead of closing it, and leaves the wider version open.
On the hardening proposal: a single-flight lock for fallback refreshes was considered and left out on purpose. Concurrent refreshes write the same public snapshot within the same minute, and the only effect is which list a badge and its 25 XP are computed from, not any access or award that persists.
Linked Issues warning: “Part of #894” accurately describes the narrower scope. This PR covers code contributors on production; #894 remains open for broader participation. I withdraw the recommendation to expand eligibility in this PR.
Fallback refresh hardening: I accept the decision to omit a single-flight lock. Given the public snapshot and nonpersistent badge/XP calculation, concurrent refreshes do not establish a correctness defect. The lock is optional hardening, not a required fix.
This reassesses the concerns; it does not update the saved check results.

Summary
Part of #894.
#894 asks for a badge for contributing "in any way", including issues and pull requests. This PR counts code contributions only: anyone with a commit on
production, usually through a merged pull request. That's the same list the About page shows, and the same criterion #741 uses. Counting opened issues or unmerged pull requests would need a GitHub search per user, and the search API allows about 30 requests a minute.
