Summary

When someone replied to, quoted, or mentioned you, starring or quoting their commit meant opening it first. Now those notifications have the same star and quote buttons as a commit card, so you can do both from the inbox.

Changes

  • The buttons show on notifications whose commit is the actor's own: replies, quotes, mentions, and first commits. They show on the summary row and on each row of an expanded group. They reuse CommitStarButton and CommitQuoteButton as they are, so star state is shared with every other place the commit shows.
  • Star state is added to the props in the controllers, and no model is changed. This follows the review on feat: star a reply, mention or quote straight from its notification #1078 that asked for the stars to go into the props at controller level. NotificationGroupsQuery::commitStars runs one query for the commits' stars_count and starred, and returns them keyed by notification ID. NotificationController and NotificationGroupController pass that map to ShownStreams::notifications, which merges each entry into the serialized commit.
  • Only actor-written commits get star state. Star, approval, and rejection notifications are about your own commits, so they get no buttons and no star keys, even when one shares its commit with a reply on the same page.
  • The mobile API does not use ShownStreams, so its payload is unchanged. paginate and its query count are unchanged.

This overlaps with #1078, which adds a star button to replies, mentions, and quotes. This PR also adds the quote button, shows both buttons on each row of an expanded group, and covers first commits.

Validation

How I proved it: a feature test that fails without the backend change, and a browser run on seed data.

  • Notification feature, query, and API tests pass (65). The new test checks starred and stars_count on the inbox page and on the group JSON, for a user who starred the commit and for one who didn't. The starred-notification test now asserts the commit has no starred key. Removing the type filter in commitStars makes it fail.
  • phpstan, pint --test, rector --dry-run, tsc --noEmit, and bun run test:lint pass.
  • In Chromium on seed data at 1280x900, starring a reply from the inbox returned 200. The page stayed on /notifications, and the star was still pressed after a reload. The group endpoint returned the same starred and stars_count. Quote opened the dialog for a mention.
  • An open group keeps naming the actor it showed when opened, while its commit becomes the newest one. The buttons now take the newest commit's author from actor_id. I reproduced this in the browser by opening a mention group and adding a newer mention from another actor through the poll. The quote dialog went from naming the old actor to naming the newer commit's author.
  • The actions are keyed by commit, so a quote being written closes when a newer commit takes over an open group, and its draft stays stashed for the commit it was started on. Without the key, the open dialog switched to the newer commit mid-draft. I checked both in the browser.
  • A test puts a star notification and a reply on the same commit, and asserts only the reply gets star state. It fails on the old commit-keyed map.

Before is production at 01c39a2 and after is this branch at f24a427 (later commits only change the open-group cases and the star map's keys), with the same route, viewport, and data.

Quote dialog opened from a mention:

Device verification

Playwright with Chromium in iPhone 13 emulation (390x844, touch), not hardware. Tapping star toggled it on and off, and each request returned 200. Tapping quote opened the dialog, which is 358px wide with Quote visible.

mobile-list mobile-quote

Limitations

  • The quote dialog's preview of a quoted reply leaves out its images and link card, because loading those would add queries on every inbox page. The quote itself is created correctly.
  • For a first commit, the actor stands in for the commit's author. CreateFirstCommitNotifications sets the actor to the user who posted the commit, so on an organization's first commit the quote dialog names that user, not the organization. This predates the PR, and the row already shows the commit as the user's.

Rounds: 4

Delegate Round 1 Round 2 Round 3 Round 4
Claude Opus 5.5 8/10 9/10 9/10 9/10
Claude Fable 5.1 8/10 9/10 9/10 9/10
Claude Sonnet 5.5 8/10 9/10 9/10 9/10

Round 1 found nothing blocking. After it, I merged the two star tests into one with a dataset, pinned the type filter with a missing assertion, made the stars argument required, and dropped a redundant cast. I declined a fuller quote preview, a fix for the first-commit actor, and tighter TS types for own-commit notifications, all because they go beyond this PR. Rounds 3 and 4 reviewed the fixes for CodeRabbit's findings (the open group's commit author, the quote target, and star state keyed by notification) and found nothing blocking.

Created with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code (T3 Code).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added quote and star actions to commit notifications in both detailed and grouped layouts.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Notification views now show whether you’ve starred a commit and its total star count.

Walkthrough

Notification responses now include recipient-specific star counts and star status for qualifying commits. The notification page adds star and quote actions for reply, quote, mention, and first-commit notifications.

Possibly related issues

Possibly related PRs

Suggested reviewers: xheaven, nunomaduro

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 24532

Organization first-commit quotes can show the wrong profile, and members can see a star action the server rejects. The issue is limited to those notifications.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 24532

The change is contained within notification responses and existing commit actions. Recipient scoping and server-side ownership and visibility checks remain authoritative. No authorization bypass was established, although author identity differs in some notification presentations and evidence coverage is incomplete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The added exposure is an authenticated recipient's notification data and easier access to existing commit mutations. Another user's notification identifier is checked against the current user's relevant notifications, and the new star lookup accepts commit IDs derived from that recipient-scoped result rather than a new arbitrary-ID request parameter.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Notification action rendering does not replace server authorization. Creating a star rejects the viewer's own commits and requires visibility; deleting a star also requires visibility. Quote creation validates the quoted commit and resolves it through the viewer's visibility scope.
  • observed — The new star lookup does not independently apply visibleTo. Its upstream notification relevance rule requires approved commits for eligible notification types and excludes silenced actors. Approved commits are public under the existing commit visibility model, subject to blocking controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Quote controls retain the existing processing guard and validation recovery. Ordinary validation errors preserve the composer, invalid quoted-commit responses close it, and successful non-rejected submission clears the draft stash. Notification actions are keyed by commit ID so a group changing its representative commit does not reuse the old action instance.

The current test does not detect a recipient-specific false-positive. It only checks starred=true after the authenticated recipient has starred the commit.

Adding a second recipient who has not starred the same commit, while another user has starred it, would materially cover this missing case for both notification endpoints. This is not duplicated by the existing commit and reply endpoint tests because those tests do not exercise notification responses.

Hi @StivenKN, I'm going through open PRs and I noticed that #1078 by @hbenabdallah (opened Oct 23, closes #447) also adds a star button to notifications, in the same places: NotificationController, NotificationGroupController and NotificationGroupsQuery::paginate, so the two will conflict.

The scopes differ a bit:

#1078 got a review from @nunomaduro on Nov 3, asking for the stars to be added to the props at the controller level rather than on the models, which was addressed in 244e0ff. Mentioning it here in case it helps both of you line things up.

Filter star data by notification type during serialization.

A Replied notification and a Starred notification for the same commit can appear on one inbox page. commitStars() adds the commit ID from the replied notification. ShownStreams::notifications() then applies that entry to the starred notification by ID alone. The response includes starred and stars_count on a notification type that must omit those fields.

Hi @jubianchi, I reworked this to follow Nuno's review on #1078. The star state is now built in the two notification controllers and added to the props. No model is changed. NotificationGroupsQuery::commitStars returns the stars keyed by notification ID, and ShownStreams::notifications merges them into each notification's commit. The mobile API payload is unchanged. I also rebased onto the latest production.

On the overlap with #1078: this PR covers what #1078 does (starring replies, mentions and quotes from the inbox). It also adds the quote button, shows both buttons on each row of an expanded group, and covers first commits. If #1078 lands first, I'll rebase this onto it. If you'd rather keep only one of the two, that works for me too.
