fix: stop people in timeout from going live - #1146
A timeout says "You can read, but you can't post until it's over", and PreventPostingInTimeout guards every route that puts something in front of other people: commits, replies, scheduled commits, remotes, orgs.
PUT /settings/live (user-live.update) doesn't have it. Someone in timeout can still "Go live" with any YouTube or Twitch link, for up to 12 hours. Their followers then see it in the "Live now" block of the sidebar, and a LIVE marker on the person's avatar everywhere in the log, both linking to that stream. For a timeout given for spam or self-promotion, that's exactly the link the timeout was meant to stop.
Reproduced locally, with tester in a 30-day timeout (Engagement bait):
POST /commits → 403, "You're in timeout for 30 days…"
PUT /settings/live with https://www.twitch.tv/buymycourse and 12 hours → saved
What @qstark, who follows tester, sees right after:
The fix
user-live.update gets the PreventPostingInTimeout middleware, like the other routes that post. The Go live dialog then shows the same "You're in timeout" dialog as the composer, and nothing is saved:
Ending a stream (DELETE /settings/live) stays allowed, so someone in timeout can still take their live marker down.
Tests
New test stops a user in timeout from going live, but lets them end a stream: going live is refused with the timeout details and the current stream stays as it was, while ending it still works. It fails on production (302 instead of 403).
In the browser with the fix: "Go live" from the profile menu while in timeout shows the timeout dialog, and live_url stays empty.
pint, rector, phpstan: clean. Full suite with --coverage --exactly=100.0: 4292 passed, 100%. Type coverage: 100%.

Bug Fixes
Users in timeout can no longer update their live stream URL. Attempts to change it are denied with an explanation of the timeout, and the existing URL remains unchanged.
Users in timeout can still end their live stream, which clears the URL. Their ability to stop a stream is unaffected by the restriction on updating it.
The settings/live update route now applies PreventPostingInTimeout. A feature test verifies that a timed-out user cannot change the live URL but can end the stream.
Changes: Live stream timeout enforcement
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Enforce timeout on live updates routes/web.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/UserTimeoutControllerTest.php
The update route applies PreventPostingInTimeout. The test checks that a timed-out user's update is forbidden and leaves the URL unchanged, while ending the stream remains allowed and clears the URL.
The change blocks timed-out users from starting streams without preventing them from ending existing streams.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 60f54
The change narrows permission to update live settings using the existing timeout control. It preserves authenticated ownership and the ability to end a stream. No material security risk was found to be introduced or worsened.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The changed authority is limited to the authenticated actor's live-settings update endpoint. Neither operation accepts a target-user identifier through its controller signature, and the new gate does not grant access to another user's state.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The change closes the identified path by which an authenticated user already in timeout could submit a replacement live URL. An active-timeout response now terminates processing before the mutation action. This addresses the existing bypass rather than introducing a new attack path.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Authentication and timeout eligibility remain separate controls. Both live operations require authentication, but only updates require timeout eligibility. This preserves the user's authority to remove their own live state even while further updates are blocked.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The gate establishes eligibility at request time, not a demonstrated transactional guarantee against concurrent timeout changes. The unchanged update and deletion actions also provide no explicit ordering coordination between concurrent requests. These are limits of the existing mutation design, not additional exposure introduced by restricting the update route; concurrency and storage-failure guarantees remain unverified.

Explanation
The title "fix: stop people in timeout from going live" matches the main change. The PR adds PreventPostingInTimeout middleware to the PUT settings/live route, so users in timeout are refused when they try to set a live stream URL. Ending a stream through DELETE settings/live stays allowed. The title is short, specific, and uses a conventional fix: prefix. It does not cover the added test, but that detail is not required.
