feat(huginn): invoke skills explicitly with /skill:name - #458
Implements DALLAY-715 (GitHub #430): a host-owned /skill:<name> [task] routing path that resolves a skill through the approved catalog and the read-only on-demand loader before any model turn starts.
Explicit routing. Parse and bound /skill:<name> [task], resolve only selected catalog entries, and pass the task text through unchanged as user input.
Host authority. Skill instructions stay lower-trust task data with source provenance. Effect approvals still apply to every modifying tool call, and a skill body cannot grant itself permissions.
Deterministic failures. Unknown, malformed, ambiguous, cancelled or unavailable skills are rejected before inference, tool effects or any persisted assistant turn.
Parity. Skill names and descriptions surface through the existing host command completion for TUI, line mode, huginn run and JSON output, including resumed sessions.
TUI recovery. The composer state resets when a prompt template expansion is rejected, so an indirect skill invocation attempt leaves the TUI usable.
The huginn-plugin-api::v1 command grammar and the reserved command rules are unchanged.
just ci-lint, just ci-fmt, just ci-check, just ci-clippy
just ci-test-rust — full workspace suite passes
pnpm exec markdownlint-cli2 "docs/**/*.md"
Notes:
Two pre-existing non-UTF-8 path fixtures could not create their fixture on APFS (OS error 92). They now skip when the path cannot be created, so the workspace suite runs on macOS while keeping coverage on Linux.
An independent boundary review found one issue: a rejected prompt template expansion left the TUI composer busy. A PTY regression reproduced it before the fix and passes after it.
Full CI (just ci-ci) and real-provider inference were not run locally.
Add a host-owned /skill:<name> [task] routing path that resolves the skill
through the approved catalog and the read-only on-demand loader before any
model turn starts.
- Parse and bound the command, resolve only selected catalog entries, and
pass the task text through unchanged as user input.
- Keep skill instructions as lower-trust task data with source provenance;
effect approvals still apply to every modifying tool call.
- Reject unknown, malformed, ambiguous, cancelled or unavailable skills
before inference, tool effects or any persisted assistant turn.
- Expose skill names and descriptions through the existing host command
completion for TUI, line mode, run and JSON output, including resume.
- Reset the composer when a prompt template expansion is rejected so the TUI
stays usable after an indirect skill invocation attempt.
The plugin command grammar and reserved command rules are unchanged.
…tion
Official documentation must not point at experimental projects that live
outside the repository. Describe the alternative wire-to-wire translation
approach in generic terms instead of naming a transient implementation, and
drop the out-of-scope entry that referenced it.
… rejects them
APFS on macOS returns an illegal byte sequence error when creating a path with
non-UTF-8 bytes, so the fixtures never reached the behavior under test and
failed the workspace suite before any product code ran. Skip those cases when
the path cannot be created and keep the coverage on filesystems that allow it.
Invoke a named skill with /skill:<name> [task] in the TUI, line mode, or huginn run; the TUI offers skill-name autocomplete and descriptions.
Skill invocations preserve task text, and resumed sessions use updated skill instructions.
Bug Fixes
Invalid or unavailable skills and prompt templates that attempt to invoke skills are rejected without starting a turn or recording the rejected input.
Skill-discovery errors no longer prevent prompt-template completions from appearing.
Documentation
Updated the Huginn skill guides with invocation, loading, and safety details.
Huginn now supports explicit /skill: invocation in line, TUI, and run modes. It validates and loads a selected skill before a turn, preserves task text, and exposes skill names and descriptions in TUI completion.

Summary
Invocation parsing and resolution crates/huginn/application/src/skills.rs
Parses bounded /skill: input, preserves task text without shell parsing, and resolves exactly one selected entry by name.
Skill activation before turns crates/huginn/core/src/lib.rs, crates/huginn/application/src/loop_engine.rs, crates/huginn/runtime/tests/coding_workflow.rs
Adds skill-command discovery and loads a resolved skill before a turn. Tests cover catalog snapshots, untrusted data, resume behavior, cancellation, and failures that leave session state unchanged.
The feature has no established behavior blocker in the supplied evidence, but its new tests should be moved to a separate target to comply with the repository rule.

Full details: Huginn Inward Dependency Boundaries
Explanation
Applicable: the PR changes crates/huginn/ and Huginn application/core code. ADR-0012's guard allowlists the reviewed huginn-core dependencies (async-trait, futures, serde, serde_json, thiserror, tokio, tokio-util, uuid, zeroize, url) and huginn-application dependencies (huginn-core, async-trait, futures, serde_json, tokio, uuid). The head manifests match these allowlists. A source scan of crates/huginn/core/src and crates/huginn/application/src found no direct std/tokio filesystem, process, or network I/O and no concrete runtime, presentation, or adapter imports. The diff adds only port-based skill loading, parsing, and catalog handling.
Full details: Plugin Lifecycle And Revocation
Explanation
Not applicable. The PR changes Huginn skill parsing, catalog loading, prompt handling, presentation completion, and related tests/docs. It does not change plugin-kernel code, plugin/runtime lifecycle implementation, tool-registry code, or MCP lifecycle code. The runtime paths in the diff are tests only. Therefore staged publication, rollback, lease ownership, cleanup order, stale handles, revocation, and lifecycle cancellation invariants are not introduced by this PR.
Full details: Approvals And Terminal Authority
Explanation
PASS. Huginn approval, effect, CLI, session, and presentation paths changed, and the trust-boundary checks pass. HostPolicy remains the sole approval authority: it uses exact host action grants, checks cancellation and prompt availability before and after decisions, and tool execution calls approve for each prepared effect before execution. Skill metadata and the explicit skill envelope remain lower-trust data; allowed-tools does not grant authority. New tests cover denied effects, unknown or malformed skills, activation races, request and lifecycle cancellation, no model requests, no persisted history, and no effects. Non-skill input still uses the existing run path, JSON output remains unchanged, and the TUI keeps one input owner. Prompt rejection synchronizes UI state, and connection shutdown still awaits the driver before drop-based terminal cleanup.
Full details: Rook Architecture And Provider Contracts
Explanation
PASS: not applicable. The reviewed diff changes only Huginn application, presentation, runtime tests, and documentation paths. It does not change Rook domain, Rook application/use-case, infrastructure, HTTP/provider, or persistence code. The Rook architecture and provider-contract checks therefore do not apply.
Full details: Security And Supply Chain Regressions
Explanation
No concrete security or supply-chain regression is introduced. The PR adds no dependency, CI, credential, HTTP, or MCP configuration changes. Explicit skill requests use bounded names and input, resolve only selected catalog entries, and load through the existing read-only loader before model execution. The loader revalidates catalog identity, canonical paths, file type, size, UTF-8, and source changes. Skill content is encoded as untrusted task data, while tool approvals still use HostPolicy. TUI skill commands bypass plugin dispatch, and untrusted descriptions and diagnostics pass through terminal-safe rendering. The changed code adds no shell or script execution path.
Full details: External Compatibility And Regression Tests
Explanation
PASS. The PR adds documented Huginn /skill:<name> [task] behavior without changing Rook HTTP APIs, provider configuration, or the plugin API. The new AgentLoop::skill_commands method has a default implementation, so existing implementors remain compatible. The PR documents parsing, limits, session behavior, JSON behavior, TUI completion, and plugin-host ownership in docs/huginn/skills.md and updates the Huginn README. Regression coverage includes apps/huginn/tests/skill_invocation.rs, apps/huginn/tests/tui.rs, and crates/huginn/runtime/tests/coding_workflow.rs, covering run, line mode, JSON output, resume, failure atomicity, task preservation, project precedence, prompt-template rejection, and TUI recovery. No migration gap or undocumented breaking contract change is evident.

it may match echoed composer text; avoid counting cumulative `pty.output()` text
as a new response.

fail the test for all other errors.
