feat(console): polish rendering, animations, diagrams, typography - #27

A streamed draft re-renders every code block on each delta flush, and syntect highlighting dominated that cost on long replies. A bounded LRU keyed by (language, code) serves byte-identical blocks from the cache, so a flush highlights only the newest tail block. The cache drops with the highlighter on a theme switch, since cached output is baked in the old palette.
Diagrams inherited the code-frame width cap, so wide flowcharts fell back to the source view even on wide terminals. The fence seam now draws on the full body budget and its frame stretches to match; code frames keep the modest cap. Diagram bodies are plain geometry, so they now ride the theme text style instead of the terminal default foreground.
Gantt bars ignored each task's start date: every bar left-aligned and scaled by duration only, so a staggered schedule rendered as identical-looking rows. Bars now sit at their offset from the earliest start and scale against the full span. Quadrant charts probe neighboring cells when points coincide (they used to overwrite each other), keep points off the quadrant labels, and wrap the legend across rows instead of falling back whole.
…tails The crow's-foot cardinality heads of an erDiagram marker were parsed and discarded; they now decode into the edge label, leading it so the multiplicity survives narrow-lane truncation. Class, entity, and requirement boxes draw a full-width rule under their title row, and members past the box cap collapse into an explicit tail row instead of vanishing. Straight (vertically aligned) edges annotate their labels beside the lifeline on per-edge rows - they used to lose the label entirely - and labels stop short of the neighboring lifeline, growing the canvas when the widest band leaves no room.
A sequence diagram fell back to the source view whenever any note appeared, and the +/- activation markers inside message heads forked phantom participants. Notes now render as text-sized boxes hanging over or beside the anchor lanes, activation bookkeeping (activate/deactivate/auton and the markers) is tolerated as presentation-only, and participants stay canonical.
TD bands placed nodes in source order and hugged the left edge of the widest band; bands now sort by the mean center of their predecessors (barycenter) and center in the canvas, which untangles most edge crossings. LR columns get the same ordering vertically. LR edges skipping a layer ran a straight line through every intermediate box - boxes painted last, so the line read as connecting the wrong box - and now route through the inter-column gutters on the nearest box-free row. LR edge labels that cannot fit their run truncate into it instead of disappearing.
List item continuation lines started at column 0, floating under the marker instead of the item text; they now hang by the nesting indent plus the marker width (the indent rides the text style so the user-message background band carries through the wrap). Headings get one extra blank line above the single-blank rhythm - space above, tight below - so sections scan apart in long replies; a document- leading heading stays flush.
The spinners advanced on 80 ms and 130 ms cadences against the render loop's 100 ms tick, so frames skipped and the waves visibly stuttered; the streaming dot's 530 ms blink half-period alternated between 500 and 600 ms. All animation intervals now sit on the tick grid (100 ms spinners, 500 ms blink): every animation advances exactly one frame per tick with no extra redraws.
The light theme's muted text sat below the WCAG AA bar for normal-size text (4.3:1) and the dark theme's fell to 3.6:1 over the input band; both muted values lift clear of 4.5:1 and the theme contract test now locks the floor at 4.5:1. The thinking preview wraps at its real four-column prefix width instead of reserving two extra columns, and the queue pane gains the trailing spacer every transcript component ends with, so it no longer sits flush against the editor frame.
Two edges leaving a box at the same column share one trunk, and the second edge's fill used to overwrite the first edge's corner glyph standing in its path (a turn rendered as a plain line). Trunk fills now place only where the cell is clear, so a corner always survives.

TIP This summary will be updated as you push new changes.
The markdown event loop and the mermaid edge routers each carried a whole document (or diagram) of inline branches, tripping the function length limit and the bumpy-road health rules. The event loop moves into a DocumentState with one handler per event class, the TD and LR routers dispatch to per-shape functions over small routing structs, and the quadrant point probe, legend wrap, and ER relationship parse stand alone.
The mermaid and markdown test modules had grown into single 700-1000 line files mixing every concern, which read as low cohesion. They now split into thematic submodules (dispatch/flowchart/sequence/charts/ shared-engine, and cache/code-blocks/tables/inline/cjk/rhythm) with the shared helpers in each directory's mod.rs.

…pers Band and column placement now share one order-by-barycenter and one centered-placement helper, and the ER parser registers entities through a single name-trimming helper, flattening the two functions the health gates still flagged.

existing wrap width; leave paragraphs outside list items unchanged.
Review comments at @crates/frontends/engine/src/markdown/tests/cache.rs:
- Around line 78-86: Update highlighter_swap_drops_the_cache to swap in a second
CountingHighlighter with its own call counter instead of PlainHighlighter. After
rendering the same input, assert the original counter remains at one and the new
counter reaches one, so the test detects whether set_highlighter clears the

separately rounded values cannot misalign task endpoints.
Review comments at @crates/frontends/engine/src/mermaid/layout.rs:
- Around line 541-545: Reorder the routing checks so the skip-level condition
`tl > fl + 1` runs before the `route.from_row == route.to_row` branch, routing
same-row skip edges through `skip_lr` when applicable. Preserve `skip_lr`’s
straight-run fallback when no box-free row exists; do not add canvas rows.
- Around line 552-557: Update the crossing-row selection near the routing logic
so it filters out rows occupied by intermediate boxes before choosing the
nearest row to route.from_row; the current Option::filter checks only the
nearest candidate. Preserve the exclusions for route.from_row and route.to_row,
and select the nearest remaining box-free row.
- Around line 832-838: Update elbow_td’s fallback label placement to truncate
the annotation with super::truncate_width to the remaining canvas width, and
skip placement when fewer than three columns remain. Pass total_width from the
elbow_td call site so the fallback cannot extend the rendered row beyond the
canvas.
Review comments at @crates/frontends/engine/src/mermaid/sequence.rs:

code so its display width matches the top border and the `┘` aligns with `┐`. In
`sequence_notes_render_as_boxes_over_the_lanes`, add an assertion comparing
those corner columns by display width, not byte index.
Review comments at @crates/frontends/engine/src/mermaid/tests/flowchart.rs:
- Around line 40-50: Update td_bands_order_by_predecessor_centers to verify the
rendered child-band row places X before Y, comparing their positions on that
row; keep the existing presence and routing assertions as appropriate.
- Around line 75-81: Update the skip-edge test around `turn_rows` so it verifies
the route actually avoids the intermediate box: use a graph with a box-free row
in the intermediate column and assert that row has no horizontal edge segment
between the source gutter and the box, or count corner glyphs only outside box
column ranges. Ensure the assertion cannot pass merely because box borders
contain corner glyphs.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Indent the first line of later paragraphs in a list item, or limit the hang to the marker line.
flush_inline applies hang to every flush while a list item is open. Only the first block of an item starts with the marker. A later paragraph in the same item starts with an empty inline buffer. Example: "1. step\n\n long explanation …".
For that paragraph, the first wrapped line starts at column 0. Lines after it start at column hang. The result is a reversed hanging indent, where wrapped lines sit to the right of the paragraph's first line. Before this change, all of those lines started at column 0. Model replies often put explanation paragraphs under numbered steps, so this layout is common.
To fix it, add the painted hang indent when a paragraph opens inside an item and inline is empty. The first line then aligns with the item text. It also keeps the same columns - hang wrap width as the marker line.

Make highlighter_swap_drops_the_cache detect a missing cache clear.
The test swaps to PlainHighlighter, which does not change calls. After the swap, calls.get() stays 1 in both cases:
set_highlighterclearshighlight_cache, and the new highlighter runs.set_highlighterdoes not clear it, and the old cached output is reused.
The assertion therefore passes even if self.highlight_cache.clear() is removed. Use a second CountingHighlighter and assert that it runs once.

Clamp rounded bars to the remaining timeline width.
Separate rounding can produce a 25-column span from the 24-column timeline. For example, a task starting 25 days into a 48-day schedule and lasting 23 days rounds to offset = 13 and bar_len = 12. A task starting at day 0 and lasting 48 days ends at the same date but renders a 24-column bar, so the endpoints differ by one column.
The row-width guard prevents the line from exceeding columns. It does not prevent this endpoint misalignment. Clamp bar_len to the remaining timeline width while preserving the existing one-cell minimum.

Check for skip-level edges before same-row edges.
The from_row == to_row check runs before the tl > fl + 1 check. A skip-level edge whose endpoints share a row therefore always uses straight_lr. That line goes through every intermediate box on the row. Boxes are centered in each column, so this is the most common skip-edge shape. An example is A --> B; B --> C; A --> C with single-box columns. skip_lr already handles from_row == to_row correctly: the corner glyphs follow from r alone. Move the skip-level branch first. If no box-free row exists, skip_lr still falls back to the straight run.
Even after this change, columns of equal height have no box-free row. In that case the fallback still goes through the box. Fixing that needs extra canvas rows.

Filter for box-free rows before you pick the nearest row.
The code calls .min_by_key(...) first, so it selects one row: the nearest row to route.from_row, excluding the endpoint rows. The next .filter(...) is Option::filter, so it checks only that one row. That row is usually from_row ± 1. Columns are centered, so that row is usually inside the intermediate box. The result is None and the straight run through the box, even when a box-free row exists further away. The code comment says it crosses "on a row no intermediate box occupies, nearest to the source exit". The code does not do that.

Truncate the elbow annotation to the canvas width.
When the span is too narrow, elbow_td puts the full label at right + 2 and does not truncate it. RowCanvas::put only rejects a start column at or past the width. A label that starts inside the canvas and extends past the right edge therefore renders a line wider than total_width. The labeled_width loop (lines 216–227) grows the canvas only for straight edges, not for elbow edges. If the rightmost child has a narrow box and the edge label is long, the row can exceed columns. render_diagram then rejects the whole diagram and the console shows the source text. straight_lr, skip_lr, and straight_td already truncate with super::truncate_width. Do the same here.

The box spans columns box_left..=box_right, so its width is inner + 2.

Example: for a 4-column note text, box_w is 10 and inner is 9. The top row is 11 columns wide and the bottom row is 10. The ┘ corner sits one column left of the ┐ corner on every note.
The new tests only check that the text, ┌, and ┐ are present. They do not catch this.

Assert that X is to the left of Y on the row with the child band labels. For example, compare line.find("X") with the position of Y (not Y2).

Make the skip-edge test check the gutter route.
The assertion turn_rows >= 2 always passes. Every box top row contains ┐ and every box bottom row contains ┘. In this graph, A, B, and C are single 3-row boxes, so total_height is 3 and from_row == to_row. The A→C edge takes the straight_lr path through B. The test passes anyway and does not detect the routing defects in layout.rs lines 541–557.
Use a graph whose intermediate column leaves a box-free row off the endpoint row. Then assert that the box row of the intermediate box has no ─ between the source gutter and that box. Alternatively, count only corner glyphs outside the box column ranges.
