fix: let clang-tidy find the macOS SDK headers - #318
On macOS the C and C++ standard headers are in the Xcode or Command Line Tools SDK, and /usr/include does not exist. Apple clang finds the SDK by itself. clang-tidy is built from upstream LLVM and does not, so unless the compile command has -isysroot it stops at 'ctype.h' file not found (or 'string' file not found), even when the same file compiles with Apple clang.
When the hook runs on macOS and SDKROOT is not set, it now sets SDKROOT from xcrun --show-sdk-path before running clang-tidy.
A user's own SDKROOT is kept.
An -isysroot in compile_commands.json still wins: clang only reads SDKROOT when there is none.
If xcrun is missing or fails, nothing changes.
--verbose prints the SDK path that is used.
Linux and Windows are not affected.
Tests cover each case; coverage stays at 100%.
The static clang-tidy 16.0.6 and 23.1.4 were checked by hand on macOS 26.5 arm64 (Xcode): without SDKROOT both fail on ctype.h, with it both pass for C, and 23 also passes for C++.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved clang-tidy execution on macOS by automatically selecting the available SDK when no SDK is already specified. If SDK discovery fails, the existing environment is left unchanged.
On macOS the standard headers live in the Xcode or Command Line Tools
SDK and /usr/include does not exist. Apple clang finds the SDK itself,
but clang-tidy built from upstream LLVM stops at "'ctype.h' file not
found" unless SDKROOT or -isysroot names it. When SDKROOT is not set,
set it from `xcrun --show-sdk-path` before running clang-tidy.

fix: point clang-tidy at the macOS SDK when SDKROOT is not set
fix: let clang-tidy find the macOS SDK headers
Nov 4, 2026
On macOS, run_clang_tidy now sets SDKROOT from xcrun --show-sdk-path when SDKROOT is unset and the command returns a nonempty path. Tests cover successful lookup, existing values, other platforms, and lookup failures.

Summary
SDK lookup and clang-tidy integration cpp_linter_hooks/clang_tidy.py, tests/test_clang_tidy.py
_set_macos_sdkroot sets SDKROOT from xcrun --show-sdk-path when the variable is unset and the command returns a nonempty path. run_clang_tidy calls the helper before running clang-tidy. Tests cover successful lookup, verbose output, existing values, other platforms, and lookup failures.
The SDKROOT fallback has no confirmed functional defect. Adding caller-level coverage and a check=True assertion would protect it against regressions; these are bounded, nonblocking improvements.

Explanation
The title "fix: let clang-tidy find the macOS SDK headers" matches the main change. The PR adds _set_macos_sdkroot, which sets SDKROOT from xcrun --show-sdk-path on macOS when SDKROOT is unset. This addresses missing SDK header errors in clang-tidy. The title names the platform, the tool, and the goal. It does not name the SDKROOT mechanism, but it stays accurate and specific.

Add a run_clang_tidy test that covers the _set_macos_sdkroot call.
The new test_set_macos_sdkroot_* tests call _set_macos_sdkroot directly. No test runs run_clang_tidy with sys.platform set to darwin. No test asserts that SDKROOT is set when clang-tidy runs. The existing run_clang_tidy tests check only command arguments. Removing the call at cpp_linter_hooks/clang_tidy.py:713 would not fail any current test.
The current code makes the call, so this gap does not indicate a current failure. Add a test that:
patches sys.platform to darwin for that test only,
removes SDKROOT from the environment,
mocks the xcrun --show-sdk-path call,
runs run_clang_tidy through the existing fixtures, and
asserts that os.environ["SDKROOT"] is set when the clang-tidy execution is called.

`sys.platform` to `darwin`, removes `SDKROOT`, and mocks the `xcrun

occurs, so the test verifies the `_set_macos_sdkroot` call within
`run_clang_tidy`, not just the helper in isolation.

Assert check=True on the xcrun call.
Removing check=True from the xcrun --show-sdk-path call does not fail any test. test_set_macos_sdkroot_uses_xcrun checks the argument list and SDKROOT, but not the check keyword. In test_set_macos_sdkroot_without_sdk, the mock raises CalledProcessError directly, so that case passes with or without check=True. Assert the keyword in the success test.

Update test_set_macos_sdkroot_uses_xcrun to assert that the xcrun invocation
passes check=True, while preserving its existing argument and SDKROOT
assertions.
