Description:

Homebrew can now give ability score increases the way 2024 content does, and give saving throw proficiencies. This is the ability-score work from the content-extensibility branch, brought over on its own so it ships in Summer Patch. Grants and grant pools stay on feature/grant-rows; nothing here depends on them. It also fixes the Option Source box in every homebrew builder.

What authors and players get

  • Races, subraces, backgrounds and feats take :ability-increases as a list of [amount pool] pairs. [[2 :cha] [1 :martial]] is +2 Charisma and +1 to a martial ability the player picks. A pool is a single ability (fixed), :any, :martial, :mental, or a set. All increases in one list land on different abilities.
  • Subclasses can do the same, in an optional "Ability Score Increases (non-standard)" section of the subclass builder.
  • :save-proficiencies gives saves, fixed or chosen ([[1 :mental]] is one mental save of the player's choice). A :save rider on an increase also gives that ability's save.
  • The character builder shows one picker per list: fixed increases as labels, floating ones as dropdowns that leave out abilities already used.
  • The race, subrace, background and subclass builders author both, and say when an entry is malformed and will be ignored, or when a save is given twice.
  • The feat builder keeps its released "+1 to one of these" checkboxes, which write a set, and adds an optional "Ability Score Increases (2024 style)" section that writes a spread. Both write :ability-increases, so one shows at a time: the spread waits until the checkboxes are cleared, and removing its last row brings them back.
  • Fixed increases from backgrounds, subclasses and feats show under "other" in the ability breakdown, not as racial.
  • A feat's released format, a set of ability keys (#{:orcpub.dnd.e5.character/str ...}), still works. The feat builder names anything else in the set (#{:str} included), since it raises nothing.

Files that use these

  • An export that uses a feature older builds cannot read is wrapped as {:orcbrew/format-version 2 ...}. An older build fails to load it instead of quietly mangling it; this build unwraps it on import and refuses a newer version with a clear message. Plain content is written exactly as before, and exports keep .orcbrew.

Option Source box (all 13 homebrew builders)

  • The box kept its own copy of the source. After New it still showed the last source while the new draft had none, and Save asked for a source the box seemed to have. It now reads the item's :option-pack on every draw (dispatch-sync keeps the caret while typing), and New carries the draft's source into the new item as real data. Settled by the owner on 2026-09-18 and not built until now; the reload in source-key-tag.js and the retype in asi-journey.js that stepped around it are removed.

Also

  • views/dropdown takes :typed?: options are indexed and :on-change gets the item's real value (keywords included), so a pick is never stored as a string.
  • What's New gains one item in the homebrew group.

Commits: the format envelope (cf18e73d), the feature (cc6252cb), What's New (805c5484), the changelog fold (f28e015b), a React key fix the journey test found (7d51c656), the journey test (8cea519f), the subrace and feat forms (1356200a), the journey authoring all five (3669c759), the Option Source fix (ec0b7a09), its test (da336a70), the workarounds removed (71418f82), its changelog line (1240ae7a). Review rounds follow, each described in its own PR comment.

Related issue (if applicable): none upstream.

Tests

  • JVM 1114 tests (including the comment-discipline check), browser suite 826 tests, lint 0 errors (the 30 warnings are integration's portrait files).
  • New: ability_increase_grant_test (JVM), ability_increase_grant_cljs_test (browser), orcbrew_format_test, orcbrew_composition_test (the stamp and the class collapse in their export order), malformed_grants_test (every reader fed a grid of malformed shapes), and a browser grid that draws each form, child components included, with each shape.
  • asi-journey.js, 33/33, 3 runs out of 3: the whole life on the seeded server, by clicks. Authors a race, subrace, background, subclass and feat in their builders (fixed, floating, a :save rider, a save choice, fixed saves), and a second feat on the released checkboxes (stored as the set; the 2024 section waits for them). Builds a fighter from the five, places all six floating increases, checks every total moved by exactly what was placed and that all six saves are proficient. Saves to the server, reloads, reopens from the server: the same. Exports the pack (v2 envelope, .orcbrew), deletes it (the character keeps every pick on the server), imports the export back (stored unwrapped): the same totals and saves. A format-version 99 file is refused with a message. Deletes the character.
  • It found one bug: in the race and subclass builders the three ASI widgets each took the item as their first argument, and Reagent uses a map argument's :key as the React key, so the siblings shared one key. Fixed in 7d51c656.
  • new-keeps-source.js, 18/18 (1/18 before the fix): in each of the 13 builders, type a source, press New, check the box and the draft agree; in four, save the new item without touching the box; the box still edits after New.
  • E2E, all pass on the final build: race-builder-asi, background-asi, subclass-asi-toggle, exact-spread-asi, multi-container-asi, multi-feat-floating, multi-source-floating-attribution, save-grants-authoring, save-grants-use, ignored-entry-note, messy-pak-survives, export-import-use, and the source-box users source-key-tag 11/11, change-item-key 11/11, move-between-sources 11/11, replace-or-refuse 20/20, two-tabs 7/7.
  • Integration's own e2e on this branch: planned-picks 89/89, missing-content-kept 7/7, library-repairs 11/11, quarantine-restore 14/14, relink-question 9/9.
  • multi-feat-floating read the Strength total 400ms after the second pick; integration's builder rebuilds a moment after an edit, so it saw the first pick only, 2 runs in 3. It now waits for the total to settle (5/5 and 3/3).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Homebrew content supports fixed or selectable ability score increases and saving throw proficiencies across races, backgrounds, subclasses, and feats.
    • Builders provide guided editors, restricted choices, validation warnings, and optional 2024-style configurations.
    • Exports now include format versioning and compatibility checks for safer sharing and importing.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Preserved the selected Option Source when creating new homebrew content.
    • Improved handling of malformed homebrew data to prevent builder errors.
  • Documentation

    • Added release highlights for the new homebrew ability and saving throw options.

…uses them

An export whose content uses a feature older builds cannot read (an ability-increase
spread, save-proficiency grants) is wrapped as {:orcbrew/format-version 2 ...}. An old
build fails to load the wrapper instead of quietly mangling the content; this build
unwraps it on import, and refuses a version newer than it reads with a clear message.
Plain content is written as before. Exports keep .orcbrew.

The serializer moves to orcbrew-format beside the stamp, from feature/grant-rows.
…ncy grants

Races, subraces, backgrounds and feats take :ability-increases as a spread of
[amount pool] pairs: [[2 :cha] [1 :martial]] is +2 Charisma and +1 to a martial ability
the player picks, all on different abilities. Subclasses take it in an optional builder
section. :save-proficiencies grants saves, fixed or chosen, and a :save rider on an
increase grants that ability's save. The character builder places floating increases
with a picker per spread; the homebrew builders author both and flag malformed entries.
A feat's released #{:str :con} format still works.

Ported from feature/grant-rows without the grant pools. The dropdown gains :typed?, so
a pick reaches the handler as its real keyword.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 654d8

Rapid consecutive grant edits can lose an earlier change. The PR is mergeable with owner awareness of this recoverable editor issue.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3669c

The changes remain focused on homebrew content and character building. The main identified risk is that malformed content can prevent backup exports, including recovery exports. No broader privilege expansion was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Recovery exports now depend on schema-sensitive version classification. A malformed feature value, such as a boolean in save-proficiencies or grants, can fail during classification before the download is created. Emergency and quarantined-content exports use this same path, so malformed content can disable the escape hatch intended to preserve it. The base serialized these exports without this classifier. This is a browser-local failure-containment and recovery regression, not evidence of deletion or remote compromise.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified recovery failure is bounded to malformed content present in the current browser's draft, live library, or quarantine. A whole-library export can be blocked by one such item because classification traverses the export payload. The inspected path does not establish cross-user access or additional service privileges.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Library-load admission deliberately uses a loose item contract rather than validating every grant field. Consequently, successful library admission is not proof that feature values are safe for schema-sensitive compilation or recovery classification.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Quarantine persistence precedes the separate live-library commit in both base and head. Commit refusal can therefore leave these stores out of step, but this ordering predates the PR and was not established as a worsened exposure. The distinct corrupt-startup-library download bypasses classification with raw text; normal emergency and quarantined-content exports do not.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Preserve an unconditional recovery route that serializes original content without schema-sensitive classification, or make classification total over malformed values while retaining the original payload.

Path Traversal

View Security blast radius

Confine the test server to public assets and loopback. The decoded request path can escape resources/public, and server.listen(PORT,r) does not restrict connections to localhost. This exposes readable repository files while a developer runs the test. The server normally runs only until the browser test finishes, so this is a minor issue rather than a major one. Apply the same fix to the copied E2E servers in the changed files.

Example fix

Path Traversal

Reachability: External
Exploitability: Difficult
CWE: CWE-22 — Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal')

View Security blast radius

Restrict the manual E2E server to its asset root.

Encoded .. segments can escape ROOT through decodeURIComponent and path.join, allowing fs.readFile to serve other readable files. The script is manually run and closes after the browser round-trip; the visible CI workflow runs a different harness. Classify this as a minor security issue, not a major issue.

Add grant editors to the subrace builder.

The subrace builder ends its ability controls after the fixed per-ability table. It offers neither ability-increase-choices nor save-proficiency-choices. An author therefore cannot create a subrace with a pooled increase or a saving-throw grant through the builder. Wire both editors and ability-save-notes to the subrace setter events, as the race builder does. The PR objective includes these grants for subraces.

Render malformed grant entries without crashing the builder.

If an imported grant list contains a non-sequential entry such as 42, these row destructurings can throw before ability-save-notes renders its ignored-entry warning. The author then cannot use the builder to identify and remove that entry. Render an invalid-entry row with a Remove control, or validate each entry before destructuring it. Preserve the warning for the invalid entry.

Wait for import completion instead of five seconds.

If an import takes longer than five seconds, the next check reads the previous library state and reports a false failure. Wait for the expected imported pack or rejection message before returning. Based on learnings, Playwright tests should use retrying conditions instead of fixed delays.

The subrace builder gets the race builder's section. The feat builder keeps its released
"+1 to one of these" checkboxes, which write a set and suit the published feats, and adds
an optional "Ability Score Increases (2024 style)" section that writes a spread. Both write
:ability-increases, so one shows at a time: the spread waits until the checkboxes are
cleared, and removing its last row stores the empty set the checkboxes expect.
…eleased feat

All five kinds of homebrew are now authored by clicks; the file import goes. A second feat
on the released checkboxes checks they still write the set and that the 2024 section waits
for them. 33 checks, 3 runs out of 3.

Move grant collection updates into event handlers.

The grant editors build replacement vectors from ais and sps captured during render, then pass those vectors to these property setters. If a user clicks “Add increase” twice before a rerender, both callbacks can dispatch the same one-row vector. The second event then loses the first addition. Dispatch add, edit, and remove operations instead. Let registered DB handlers update the current collection for all five builders.

As per coding guidelines: “Keep state transitions in registered re-frame event handlers; use DB handlers for state-only changes and FX handlers when coordinating effects.”

The box kept its own copy of the source. After New in any homebrew builder it still showed
the last source while the new draft had none, and Save asked for a source the box seemed
to have; typing the same name back changed nothing. The box now reads the item's
:option-pack on every draw (dispatch-sync keeps the caret while typing), and New in each
of the 13 builders carries the draft's source into the new item, so the remembered source
is real data. My Content's per-source add already passed the source and is unchanged.

The owner settled this on 2026-09-18 (plan-next.md); it was not built until now.
Types a source, presses New, and checks the box and the draft agree; in four builders
names and saves the new item without touching the box; checks the box still edits after
New. 1/18 before the fix, 18/18 after.
source-key-tag reloaded the page after New, and asi-journey cleared and retyped the box.
Both stepped around the bug the previous commit fixes, which is how it went unfixed.

pool-entry? accepted any collection as a pool. [1 [nil]] or [1 #{2}] threw in resolve-pool,
and backgrounds have no per-entry guard, so one such background broke the backgrounds list;
[1 #{}] made a slot with nothing to pick; [1 :foo] raised a nonexistent ability. A pool must
now be a group, an ability, or a non-empty set of abilities. save-coverage-warnings filtered
with vector? and threw on [:bad] while rendering the builder; it now uses pool-entry? too. A
field that is not a list at all compiles to nothing and is reported.
(seq true) threw when an item carried :grants true or :save-proficiencies true, or an
incompatible content section was not a collection, which stopped even the emergency raw
export. A marker counts when present and not an empty collection; a malformed one counts,
so the file is stamped v2, the conservative side.
malformed-grants-test feeds ~35 bad shapes (nil, 42, a string, maps, empty and nil pools,
non-numeric counts) into every field of every function that reads :ability-increases or
:save-proficiencies, the format check and stamp, and a feat's spread; none may throw. Run
against the engine as first ported it finds 62 failures; now none. The browser test draws
the ASI and save forms, their notes and the feat section with the same shapes; it found the
feat and subclass sections calling seq on the stored value, now has-entries?.
The pack gains a background whose grant fields are not lists. The Background tab must still
list backgrounds, and the malformed race and background each open in their builder showing
what they can't read. Console errors now fail the run, so an error-boundary catch counts.

Hardening pass, after three review rounds found the same class one spot at a time.

  • Backgrounds list guarded like races (guard-option): the ASI hook compiled every homebrew background outside any guard, so one that threw broke the whole list. 060d62ff
  • Malformed-input grid (malformed_grants_test): ~35 bad shapes in every field of every reader of :ability-increases / :save-proficiencies, the format check and stamp, and a feat's spread; none may throw. Run against the engine as first ported it finds 62 failures; now none. The browser half draws the forms, notes and feat section with the same shapes; it found the feat and subclass sections calling seq on the stored value, fixed with has-entries?. ed3b82f5
  • messy-pak-survives now includes a background whose fields are not lists, opens the malformed race and background in their builders, and fails on console errors (so an error-boundary catch counts). 75b7ed4c

Checks: lint 0 errors, JVM 1109, browser 823, the form, export and messy-pack e2e, asi-journey 33/33 three runs out of three.

If a spread contains [[2 :str] [1 :str]], both entries pass pool-entry?. This code applies both modifiers, giving STR +3 even though increments in one spread must affect different abilities. [[2 :str] [1 :str]] gave STR +3, though a list's increases go to different abilities and the
form says so. The first fixed increase to an ability counts; a later one is skipped, and the
form's notes name the ability.
The draft export is an escape hatch for work that won't save, yet a class draft whose collapse
throws could not be downloaded. It passes :raw? like the other escape hatches.

Review of 75b7ed4c (both outside the diff).

A repeated fixed increase was skipped from the character but still listed on ::t/spread, so the
builder's picker showed a +1 the character did not get. The spread holds the increments applied,
in order.

…throw

- A feat's :ability-increases written as a list is a spread, as it already was on races,
backgrounds and subclasses. Only a set takes the released +1 path; anything else is no
increase, instead of a throw that set the feat aside.
- The feat builder draws such a feat: the spread section for a list, the checkboxes for
anything else. It threw on a number or text.
- A newer file whose :orcbrew/requires is not a list of names is refused with the message.
The message threw while naming them.

Tests: the browser grid now draws child components, which is where the feat builder threw;
the JVM grid feeds feats every malformed shape, not only vectors; messy-pak opens a list
spread feat and a junk feat in the feat builder. Each new check fails without the fix.

20b288b0: three crashes on malformed homebrew in this PR's code, found by a read-path audit, not by review.

  • A feat whose :ability-increases is a list (EDN parens) went down the released-set path and threw, so the feat was set aside. Races, backgrounds and subclasses already read a list as a spread; feats now do too. Anything that is neither a list nor a set is no increase.
  • The feat builder threw on a number or text there (disj on a non-set). It now draws the spread section for a list and the checkboxes for anything else.
  • A newer-version file with :orcbrew/requires [42] threw while building the refusal message. It is now refused with the message.

Why the grid missed the feat builder: it drew only the top form, and the throw was in a child component. The browser grid now draws child components the way Reagent does. The JVM grid feeds feats every malformed shape, not only vectors. Each new check fails on a5b7c16d.

Checks: lint 0 errors; JVM 1113 tests; browser 824 tests; messy-pak-survives 11/11 (adds a list-spread feat and a junk feat in the feat builder); multi-feat-floating, export-import-use, new-keeps-source 18/18; asi-journey 33/33 ×3.

The note naming ignored increases sat inside the optional 2024 section, which starts closed
when the fields hold junk, so a feat or subclass with :ability-increases 42 showed nothing.
The note now sits below the section. A feat's released set, empty or not, is still not
reported.

messy-pak checks the list-spread feat draws as +1 Strength and the junk feat names its
ignored entry, and waits for what it reads instead of a fixed delay.

Review of 20b288b0: all three fixed in c037584a.

  • Junk feat increases showed no warning (views.cljs:6816): real, and the subclass builder had the same gap. The note sat inside the optional section, which starts closed when the fields hold junk. It now sits below the section in both builders. A feat's released set, empty included, is still not reported. New browser test: 42 and "x" warn; #{}, #{:str :con} and a spread do not. It fails without the fix.
  • messy-pak asserted headings only: the list-spread feat now has to draw a row of +1 and Strength, and the junk feat has to name its ignored entry.
  • Fixed delay: the feat builder checks now wait for what they read.

Checks: lint 0 errors; browser 825 tests; messy-pak-survives, subclass-asi-toggle, multi-feat-floating, ignored-entry-note pass; asi-journey 33/33 ×3. Only cljs and e2e files changed, so the JVM suite was not rerun.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the save count within the selected pool.

If an author sets “How many” to 3 and changes “From” to Strength, this handler stores [3 :str]. The compiler caps the count to one and grants only the Strength save, while the editor still displays three. Restrict the count when the pool changes, and show an accurate count for imported entries. …at it gives

- The released +1 set raises only namespaced ability keys (::character/str). A hand-written
#{:str :con} raised nothing and the feat builder said nothing. It now names each member that
is not an ability or :saves?. released-set-warnings joins the malformed-grants grid.
- A save entry's count is capped at its pool's size when compiled. The form showed the stored
count, so [3 :str] read as three saves while it gave one; changing From kept the old count.
The form now shows the count given, offers no more than the pool holds, and lowers the count
when From changes to a smaller pool.

Review of c037584a: both real, fixed in 654d8488.

  • A released feat set of short keys (views.cljs:6834): the legacy compiler raises only namespaced ability keys, so #{:str :con} raised nothing, and my last round's test wrongly called it valid. The feat builder now names each member of a released set that is not an ability key or :saves?. I chose naming over converting short keys, so the released format stays as it is. The PR description's example is corrected.
  • The save count past its pool (views.cljs:8176, outside the diff): the form showed the stored count, so [3 :str] read as three saves while it gave one. It now shows the count the entry gives, offers no more than the pool holds, and lowers the count when From changes to a smaller pool.

Each new check fails on c037584a: the feat-section test (#{:str :con} warns, a namespaced set and #{} do not), a save-row test (an imported [3 :str] shows 1 and offers only 1; From :any to :str stores [1 :str]), and released-set-warnings in the malformed grid.

Checks: lint 0 errors; JVM 1114 tests; browser 826 tests; save-grants-authoring, save-grants-use, messy-pak-survives, ignored-entry-note, multi-feat-floating pass; asi-journey 33/33 ×3.
