Mirrors the existing "Random Name" button pattern: one click fills ::char5e/image-url with a DiceBear seed-based avatar URL. Race is read off built-char and steers the DiceBear style (elf/half-elf → lorelei, dwarf/halfling/gnome → big-ears, everything else → adventurer) so the generated portrait flatters the character. Uses the PNG endpoint so PDFBox can embed the image in the exported sheet, and the URL matches the http(s) regex the PDF route already enforces. This reverts commit 19dd970.
Users open a right-edge slide-in drawer from a "Compose portrait" button next to the Image URL input, pick a layer per category from swatch grids, or roll a seeded random composition, and Save writes the layer selection back to the character as ::char/portrait-layers. The character summary renders the composite in place of the pasted URL when layers are present, falling back to image-url otherwise (existing behavior preserved). MVP scope: one launcher (the button), one adaptive drawer (portrait-left on desktop / portrait-top on mobile via a single 700px breakpoint), 10 layers matching the illustrator's real folder taxonomy (hair bits → bangs), inline SVG placeholder art per layer so the feature is functional today. Real illustrator PNGs plug in by swapping :asset/url values in the registry — no code change. Portrait tab and summary-pencil entry points are deferred to a follow-up. Data model: ::char/portrait-layers rides ::entity/values (Transit-encoded), no Datomic schema patch needed for MVP. Compositor + summary render the composite for the currently-loaded character; list/summary cards for other characters continue to use image-url. Ports the color model validated in the interactive prototype: four base color slots (hair / skin / eyes / shirt) that paint every layer mapped to them, plus per-piece shade (-30%..+30% toward white/black) and full override, so one hair asset renders brown at the back, lighter at the bangs, and a dyed streak in front. Layers now render as CSS mask divs tinted by tint-for rather than plain <img>, which is what lets a single asset take any color -- and works unchanged on real line art provided the PNGs are alpha-masked. Randomize and Reset touch layer selection only, so a character's colors survive rerolls. Also fixes a latent P0 in the previous MVP. It wrote ::char/portrait-layers -- a nested map -- straight into ::se/values, but that is a Datomic component ref: every key must be a registered attribute and none can hold a map, so the first Save would have failed the transaction. The portrait is now one registered string attribute ::char5e/portrait holding EDN, parsed back by char5e/parse-portrait (tolerates an already-parsed map, returns nil for blank/garbage rather than throwing). Deploying needs a schema re-transact; attrs upsert by :db/ident so it is idempotent. Placeholder SVG asset URIs switch from raw-utf8 to base64 -- the raw form parses fine in <img src> but breaks inside CSS url() for mask-image. Known gaps, tracked but out of scope here: PDF export and the OG share image still read only image-url, so a composed portrait does not appear in either; both need the client to rasterize the composite. Character list cards likewise need ::char5e/portrait added to their pull. The drawer is dark-theme only. Tests: 272 / 1530 assertions green, cljs build clean. :portrait/open read the saved portrait via char5e/portrait, but that getter resolves through es/entity-val against a BUILT character while db :character is the raw entity -- so it always returned nil and reopening the drawer silently discarded a saved portrait. Reads the raw ::entity/values path and parses it directly instead. Save and the summary were unaffected: both go through the built-character sub, which is why unit tests and a visual check of the summary both looked fine. Adds test/browser/portrait_compositor_e2e.js, which drives the real builder against lein e2e-server: opens the drawer, randomizes, picks a swatch, opens a color slot, applies a preset and a per-piece shade, saves, and asserts the portrait reaches the summary AND rehydrates on reopen -- the round trip that caught this. Resource failures are tracked by URL so an uncompiled stylesheet or a blocked webfont doesn't fail the run, while a genuinely missing app asset still does. A composed portrait lives only as stacked CSS masks in the browser, which PDFBox cannot read, so exports were silently dropping it -- compose a portrait, export a sheet, get an empty portrait box. The client now bakes the layers to a PNG at export time: for each layer it draws the asset, switches to source-in and flood-fills the tint, which paints the color only where the asset is opaque, then composites in z-order. That reproduces exactly what the drawer shows. The base64 goes out with the export spec as :portrait-png, and the server decodes it straight into the existing draw-image-bytes! path -- so it takes precedence over image-url, matching how the sheet and summary already resolve the two, and costs no network time inside an export slot (there is no URL to fetch). Failure is non-fatal at every step: a layer that will not decode is skipped, a bake that throws resolves to nil, and malformed base64 server-side returns nil rather than throwing -- in each case the sheet still prints, just without the picture. Posted PNGs are capped at 2 MB, checked against the encoded length before anything is allocated. Adds test/browser/portrait_pdf_export_e2e.js, which composes through the real UI, exports, and asserts the request carried :portrait-png and the returned PDF embeds an image XObject. It also replays the same POST with the portrait stripped and requires that PDF to be smaller -- without that control the "embeds an image" assertion would pass on artwork already in the sheet template. Chrome renders a PDF navigation in its own viewer, so raw bytes come from replaying the captured body rather than from response.body(). 460 tests / 3579 assertions green; both browser e2e suites pass. A share crawler has no browser, so the trick the PDF export uses -- let the client bake the layers with canvas -- is unavailable here. Adds orcpub.portrait-render, which composites server-side with no new dependency: vector assets reuse pdf/svg-path-ops, the same `d`-attribute parser the card icons are drawn with, whose [:move]/[:line]/[:curve]/[:close] output maps straight onto a Java2D Path2D; raster assets (what the real art will be) are tinted with AlphaComposite/SrcIn, the server-side twin of the canvas 'source-in' composite the client uses. GET on the new /dnd/e5/characters/:id/portrait.png serves the PNG, and character-page points og:image at it when a portrait exists, falling back to image-url otherwise -- the same precedence the sheet, summary and PDF already use. Also fixes a pre-existing bug found while wiring this: character-summary-for-id pulled ::se/summary and ::se/values but returned only the summary submap, while character-page went on to destructure both back out of THAT -- so og:title and og:image were nil on every shared character link and crawlers fell back to the site defaults. It now returns the whole pull. There is a regression test for the title specifically. Access matches the character page itself (unauthenticated by id): that page already exposes the same character's name, race and description in its meta tags, so this is not a new exposure class. Missing or unrenderable portraits 404 so a crawler falls back rather than seeing a 500, and a single corrupt layer is skipped rather than losing the whole portrait. Tests: 13 unit tests for the renderer (including differential checks that slot colors and per-piece overrides actually change the pixels, and that a bad tint does not cost the portrait) and 7 integration tests against in-memory Datomic covering the save round trip, the endpoint, and both share-card branches. This path is server-only, so it is tested server-side rather than through a browser. 480 tests / 3625 assertions green; both browser e2e suites still pass. I had been describing a manual schema re-transact as a deploy prerequisite for this feature. That was wrong: orcpub.datomic is a system component whose start runs (d/transact conn schema/all-schemas) unconditionally, after create-database and connect, so a live database picks up the new attribute the next time the app boots. There is no separate migration step. Rather than leave that as a claim, these cover what it rests on: that ::char5e/portrait is registered as a cardinality-one string, and that re-transacting all-schemas -- which every boot does -- is idempotent, leaves a portrait written by an earlier version intact, and leaves saving working. Follows the app's own light vocabulary rather than inventing one: #363636 text and the #33658A the light theme already uses for .form-button, because that theme recolours .orange to near-black and an amber drawer would look pasted on. Two structural fixes it depends on: The stylesheet was mounted inside the drawer-open? branch, so the launcher button -- which the same sheet styles, and which is on screen precisely when the drawer is NOT -- rendered unstyled most of the time. It is now mounted unconditionally. An earlier screenshot only looked right because the drawer happened to be open in it. The drawer is a sibling of content-page and .app (which carries the theme class) is inside content-page, so .app.light-theme cannot reach the drawer. It now carries its own theme class on a .pl-root wrapper. The launcher is the opposite case -- it does live under .app -- so it hooks off .app.light-theme; scoping it to .pl-root left one amber button in an otherwise blue theme, which a screenshot caught after the e2e had passed. The portrait frame deliberately stays dark in both themes. It holds character colours, and pale skin or blonde hair would vanish on a light ground. e2e now drives the real theme toggle and asserts the drawer repaints, the frame does not, and the launcher recolours -- plus that the launcher is styled while the drawer is closed. An earlier version of this test silently skipped the theme checks when its selector missed, which proved nothing. 482 tests / 3629 assertions green; both browser e2e suites pass. …y thumbnail The only entry point was a button beside the Image URL field in the Description tab, which is a strange place to look when what you want to change is the picture you are staring at. The summary thumbnail now carries a pencil that opens the same drawer. With no portrait yet there is no thumbnail to hang it on, so an empty frame stands in. It is opaque and uses the drawer frame's own ground: a translucent fill let the page behind it show through, which looked like a rendering fault rather than an empty slot. Like the drawer frame it stays dark in the light theme, since it is a preview of something that will hold character colours. The pencil is builder-only. It is gated on a nil character id, which is how the builder asks for its own in-progress character -- everywhere else character-summary is rendered against a saved id and there is no drawer mounted to open. Contributed artwork is about to land in this repo, so state the intent in the three places a crawler might look: - robots.txt names the AI and dataset crawlers individually. The blanket Disallow already covered them, but several vendors only match their own product token, and an explicit entry says something a generic rule does not. - a `robots` meta carrying only noai/noimageai (the DeviantArt convention). It deliberately does not carry noindex -- opting out of training is not opting out of search. - X-Robots-Tag on the rendered portrait PNG, because a crawler that fetches the image directly never parses the HTML that holds the meta. All three are voluntary and honoured unevenly. They are a statement of intent, not a control, and none of them substitutes for licensing the art. The blanket Disallow was breaking every shared character link on Discord, Mastodon, Slack, Telegram and X -- all of which honour robots.txt. Facebook ignores it, which is why those previews worked and hid the problem. The og:image work only ever produced a card for crawlers allowed to fetch the page, so this is the other half of that feature rather than a change of posture: no indexer is allowed, and nothing about who can reach a character page moves. They are already served unauthenticated by id; these bots only fetch a URL after a person has pasted it somewhere. The Loom runs on a phone because the artwork should not have to travel to be processed. A laptop satisfies that just as well, and can do the job properly: this script resamples at full float precision and hands off to oxipng and pngquant when they are installed. It emits the same manifest the Loom does (version 3, mode "production"), so the registry can be generated from either. Measured against a float-precision premultiplied Lanczos reference, output is exact to within 0.2 RGB levels everywhere, including the antialiased edge pixels where the naive path is off by 14. Premultiplying alpha is not optional here, and neither is doing it in float. Rounding the premultiplied image back to 8 bits before the resample looks harmless: it is not. A premultiplied value at low alpha is tiny, quantising it destroys most of its precision, and dividing the alpha back out multiplies that error by up to 255. The first version of this script did exactly that and pushed edge pixels from RGB 30 to RGB 152 -- a bright halo around every outline, invisible in the thumbnails and obvious at print size. Mixed source dimensions are reported rather than stretched: layers composite at inset 0, so one asset exported on a different canvas breaks registration for the whole portrait. A composed portrait now carries its artists' names on the three surfaces that take the art off the site: the character summary, the exported sheet, and the share card a pasted link unfurls into. One cljc helper builds the line so all three credit the same people the same way. The server has the baked pixels but not the layer selection, so the credit travels with the PNG in the export POST rather than being re-derived. Placing it on the sheet took measuring the templates. Under the image it landed on the frame's own caption; in the gutter below, on a decorative tab; left-aligned in style 4, on border ornament. It now sits centred on the portrait box just above whichever caption that template prints, with a white outline under the grey fill so it stays legible over pale skin or a dark cloak. The two layouts disagree about where the box is -- style 4's runs on past its caption into the ability scores -- so the offsets are measured off the printed captions, not derived from the image rect. Attribution must never be what fails an export: names are stripped to what WinAnsi can encode (an unencodable glyph throws on showText), truncated to fit, and the whole draw is wrapped so a bad document costs the credit rather than the sheet. The anonymised silhouettes have been available since the Loom first ran, and the compositor was still demoing geometric SVG shapes I made up. Only the layer taxonomy and the ten category colours had ever been taken from the manifest. The registry is now the real set: ten layers, twenty-eight pieces, the illustrator's own filenames and per-layer counts, served from resources/public/image/portraits/<layer>/<file>.png. The files there are silhouettes -- the Loom's 48px alpha shapes, un-squashed back to the source proportions (the Loom fits each source into a square, so they come back vertically compressed) and written at the paths the finished art will occupy. Real shapes, real registration, no line detail. A production run overwrites them in place and nothing else moves. The server-side renderer read data URIs only, so it would have drawn nothing for a share card. It now also resolves site-absolute paths off the classpath, and nothing else: a renderer that followed arbitrary URLs would turn the share endpoint into a fetch proxy. No byline is invented. :artist/name is nil until the illustrator says how they want to be credited; credit-line skips unnamed artists, so the sheet, the share card and the summary show nothing rather than a name nobody chose, and the drawer says "artist credit pending" instead of printing a label with an empty slot after it. The name I had been using in comments and tests was one I made up, and it is gone. The character-sheet templates are third-party InDesign files, so every export inherited their info dictionary: Creator "Adobe InDesign CS6 (Macintosh)", Producer "Master PDF Editor", Title and Author empty. That is what a search index or an asset manager reads off the file, and it is simply untrue. Title, Creator and Producer are now set, and the art credit is written to Subject and Keywords so it exists somewhere other than a line of drawn text. This is provenance, not protection. The printed credit is one BT/ET text object in a content stream and metadata is a dictionary entry; both come off in seconds. Neither is a watermark and neither should be described as one. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01GMZoZx7wibZT8AMF7SYmc4
…d claim The credit sat beside the portrait -- on the page, on the sheet, in the metadata -- but never in it. The composed image is the thing people actually pass around: saved off a share card, lifted out of a PDF, posted as "my character". It arrived with nothing on it. Both rasterizers now draw the credit into the pixels, dark fill under a white outline so it reads whether the transparent PNG lands on a white page or a dark chat client. The sheet's separately drawn line is gone: it would have printed twice, 0.12in apart, saying the same thing. Metadata keeps a searchable copy. This is not a watermark and should not be sold as one -- a crop removes it. It is a credit that survives being right-click-saved, which is the thing that was actually happening. Two bugs found on the way: Both rasterizers stretched each layer to fill the frame while the browser composites with `mask-size: contain`. With the real 8:11 art in a 4:5 frame every shared portrait and every printed sheet came out 10% wider than the face the drawer showed. They fit-and-centre now, and a test asserts the rendered art keeps its side gutters. all-artists-for-layers believed the :artist/id stored in the portrait. A portrait is client-supplied EDN, so deleting that one key detached the credit from art plainly in the registry -- everywhere at once, including the baked caption. The artist is now resolved from the asset through the registry, and the stored value is only a fallback; naming somebody else in the EDN no longer reassigns the work. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01GMZoZx7wibZT8AMF7SYmc4
Share images only. The PDF keeps the artist credit alone: it is the player's own document, and the sheet template already prints the site URL in its footer, so a second mark inside their portrait would be advertising at somebody who has already arrived. The two marks are on opposite edges deliberately. Sharing a caption band with the credit would hand anyone who wanted the advertising gone a reason to crop her name off with it; separated, the cheap crop takes this and leaves her. A test asserts every pixel the mark adds lands in the right-hand tenth and none of it reaches the bottom band. The domain is read from branding/app-url and normalised, never written literally -- app-url is empty by default and every fork overrides it, so a hardcoded string would stamp our domain onto other people's exports. Unset means no mark. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01GMZoZx7wibZT8AMF7SYmc4
The marks were drawn in java.awt.Font/SANS_SERIF on the server and system-ui on the client. The first is a *logical* family the JVM resolves through the host's fontconfig, so a slim container renders the credit in whatever it happens to have -- or in a fallback full of boxes. The second meant the same credit was set in two different faces depending on whether you were looking at the share image or the PDF. Both now use Vollkorn, which the project already ships and licenses (OFL) and which the character sheet itself is set in. Artist credit in the italic, site mark in the regular. The four TTFs move from resources/ to resources/public/fonts/ so one copy serves both consumers: PDFBox still loads them off the classpath, and the browser can now fetch the italic for the canvas bake -- whose output ends up inside that same PDF, so it should match the type around it. A canvas silently substitutes for a face that is not resident yet, so the export waits on document.fonts.load along with the layer images. Both the load and the file lookup degrade to a fallback face rather than dropping the credit. …drawer Third entry point, alongside the Description-tab launcher and the pencil on the summary thumbnail. The drawer stays: it is the better place to work on a phone, and the tab links to it as "Full screen". Drawer and tab render one extracted compositor-body, so the two cannot drift apart, and they share a single draft. That sharing is the whole design, and it needed the events reworked around it: - :portrait/ensure-draft seeds a draft for a surface that has no open/close. - :portrait/open no longer reseeds, so popping the drawer from the tab carries the in-progress edits across instead of silently discarding them. - :portrait/close discards by reseeding rather than dissoc-ing, so the tab underneath keeps rendering instead of going blank. - :portrait/save takes keep-open? and no longer drops the draft. It now equals what was just saved, so the tab stays populated and the dirty marker clears. The builder tab bar was a non-wrapping flex row of equal-growing tabs. A fourth tab ran the labels together at phone width -- OPTIONSDESCRIPTIONPORTRAIT with no gap. It wraps now, with a gap and a min-width to force the break. Worth knowing for future browser tests: :device-type is read from the user agent, not the viewport, so a narrow window still renders the desktop layout. The first version of this suite "tested mobile" at 412px and was really testing a squeezed desktop -- it passed while the phone layout was broken. The phone half now runs under a mobile UA and asserts no two tabs overlap and the page does not scroll sideways. Her `no <name>.txt` convention marks a piece as planned rather than missing. Both asset scripts have read those from the start and carried them in the manifest, but nothing ever surfaced them, so a thin category looked finished instead of in progress. The picker now renders them after the real swatches: dashed, hatched, badged "soon", and inert -- a div rather than a button, so it cannot be pressed or selected and does not pretend to be art you can choose. gap-inventory ships empty. The manifest the current silhouettes came from predates gap recording, so there is nothing yet to record; empty means "nothing marked pending", not "the set is finished", and the docstring says so. To stop that turning into a transcription chore that never happens, build-portrait-assets.py now prints the gaps it finds as the Clojure literal to paste in, with labels run through the same rule the asset labels use so a gap reads "Head 04" rather than "L2 head 04". Verified by temporarily pasting real script output into the inventory and driving the UI: two gap swatches, correct titles, and clicking one leaves the selection untouched. The committed state has none, so the browser check is an invariant guard that fires when data lands -- it prints the count it saw rather than passing silently. Three files conflicted. Two were additive; the third was a real design collision worth describing. Integration reworked the PDF image path while this branch was out: bytes the browser read now beat the URL (image-data + pdf/decode-image-bytes), a cached probe replaces a second fetch, and well-formed-image-url? replaces the inline regex. The composed portrait was a private version of exactly that mechanism, so it now rides the general one instead of running alongside it. That let decode-portrait-png and max-portrait-png-bytes go, along with portrait_png_test.clj -- pdf/decode-image-bytes does the same job better, adding a pixel-budget check against a small file declaring an enormous canvas, and integration already covers it in pdf_supplied_image_test.clj. One thing did not fit the general path. decode-image-bytes refuses anything over the advertised 128k because the browser is expected to have fitted it first, which orcpub.image-capture does. A composed portrait has no such stage: it is rasterized at the frame's own size and arrives at ~247k, 1.9x the ceiling, and more once the layers carry real line art. Refusing it drops the picture for being the size we chose to make it, so pdf/decode-artwork-bytes gives it what an oversized FETCHED image already gets -- fit-for-sheet -- with the pre-decode guards unchanged. Caught by the export e2e, which went from "PDF embeds an image XObject" to a sheet byte-identical with and without the portrait. Fixed a latent bug while reworking that binding: the old code put the decode in a delay and tested the delay for truthiness, so a portrait that failed to decode would suppress the pasted image-url that should have taken over. It decodes eagerly now -- local CPU, no network -- and falls back properly. Also registered the three portrait suites with scripts/test/run-browser-probes.js. Integration's What's New overlay swallows clicks, and its runner injects the suppression preload; unregistered suites miss it and fail on an overlay they have nothing to do with, which is how all three broke here. 563 tests / 4158 assertions green; all three portrait suites and integration's character_image_capture_e2e pass. Integration dropped the file from the tree on purpose (6bc3dc8): everything operational in it is documented where a contributor actually looks, and develop never carried it. Keeping it ignored rather than merely absent means a local working copy -- useful as agent scratch notes in a container that gets rebuilt -- cannot wander back into a commit. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01GMZoZx7wibZT8AMF7SYmc4
Registering them in PROBES was not enough: the runner's own conventions are
load-bearing and all three broke them quietly.
Launching. Every other probe resolves the pinned browser with findChrome();
mine honoured an ORCPUB_CHROME env var the runner does not set, so under the
sweep all three died at once on a bundled path that does not exist -- the npm
package wants a browser build the image does not ship. findChrome() now, with
the env var kept as an override.
Counting. The runner counts lines matching ^PASS / ^FAIL to catch a probe that
has quietly stopped asserting. Mine printed " ok <label>", so it saw 1 check
each instead of 32, 24 and 10 -- and with no baseline entry, want.checks was
undefined and the shortfall guard was off entirely. That is precisely the
failure mode probe-baseline.json exists to catch, switched off by output
formatting. They emit PASS/FAIL now, their real counts are in the baseline, and
the trailing summary no longer looks like an assertion line.
Untimed clicks. All three carried .click().catch(() => {}), which the runner
greps for because it waits playwright's full 30s default and discards the
failure. Replaced with a timed clickIfVisible().
Overlay suppression. The probes now call suppressOverlays themselves as well as
receiving it from the runner, which the README describes as belt and braces --
a by-hand run gets no preload, and without it the first click lands on a
backdrop.
README: the phone-layout trap gets its own section rather than a footnote under
portrait_tab_e2e. :device-type is read from the user agent, not the viewport,
so a narrow window still renders the desktop layout and a viewport-only
"mobile" check passes while the phone layout is broken -- which is how the
four-tab builder bar shipped with its labels run together.

Brings a0d9e1d, which adds /CLAUDE.md to integration's .gitignore so the agent entry point cannot be committed onto a branch that ships publicly. Auto-merged without conflict, but left the rule twice: this branch had added its own copy while integration had none. Integration's is the canonical one and says why; the local duplicate is dropped. 563 tests / 4158 assertions green; all three portrait probes pass with their baseline assertion counts.
The browser fetched the whole italic to draw one short caption into the exported portrait. Cut to what a credit line can contain -- Latin-1 plus the dashes and quotes a name might carry -- it is 197 glyphs and 26 KB, 7.2% of the original, with kerning kept. The full TTF stays as the fallback in the same @font-face. It is on disk regardless because PDFBox loads it off the classpath for the sheet itself, so listing it costs nothing and covers a name the subset does not. Verified rather than assumed: the export fetches Vollkorn-Italic-credit.woff2 and not the TTF, and only at export time -- nothing is pulled on page load. Rendered a spread of real-shaped names through the subset on a canvas, the same path the baked caption uses, and every accented form comes out in Vollkorn with no fallback: Renée Doré, Søren Müller-Ångström, Ana Muñoz, Jean-Luc Ferré, O'Brien & Sons. The regeneration command is in the stylesheet comment, on one line: a backslash continuation is not a legal escape inside that Clojure string, and splitting it broke the reader. 563 tests / 4158 assertions green; 3/3 portrait probes at their baselines.
Fitting generated artwork went through pdf/fit-for-sheet, which scales into TYPE_INT_RGB and re-encodes as JPEG. That is right for a photograph and wrong for anything transparent: JPEG has no alpha, so a composed portrait's transparent ground came back black and every exported sheet printed a black rectangle around the character. It went in with the integration merge and was only found by looking at a rendered sheet. fit-artwork replaces it for this path: scales into ARGB, stays PNG, and gives up pixels rather than transparency. It steps the longest edge down by 15% at a time instead of walking a fixed ladder, because a ladder starting above the image's own size burns attempts re-encoding it unchanged. Artwork also gets its own weight ceiling. max-embedded-bytes is 128k because that is what the builder advertises beside the Image URL field -- a promise about what a user may UPLOAD. Holding the app's own raster to it cost resolution and measurably so: 600x750 came back 367x459, which is 156 dpi in the 2.35in printed box, under the 200 dpi the assets are built for. 320k keeps the full raster at 238 dpi and still bounds the document; the fit stays as the backstop above it. Three tests, because a black box around the character is exactly the sort of thing that ships quietly: the corner stays transparent, the height stays above 630px, and something genuinely heavy is fitted rather than refused. A fourth records that the pixel budget IS a wall -- 2400x3000 is 7.2M pixels against a 4M cap and is refused before any pixels are decoded, which is the decompression-bomb guard, not the weight ceiling. 567 tests / 4166 assertions green; 3/3 portrait probes at their baselines.
A throwaway Playwright script for generating screenshots, committed by accident one commit ago. .gitignore already carries '_*.js' for exactly this class of mistake -- "a hardcoded-path scratch file into a commit, which happened twice in one session" -- and this one did not match the pattern.
House style per docs/branch-changelog.template.md, and required by the PR template. Folded into CHANGELOG.md at merge with scripts/fold-branch-changelog.sh; the pre-push guard refuses a commit that still carries it onto integration. Claims a Highlights section: this is a new capability, not a bugfix bundle. The "Why this branch exists" section carries the three things a reviewer will otherwise mistake for oversights — the assets are anonymised silhouettes standing in at the real paths, :artist/name is nil on purpose, and gap-inventory is empty because the source manifest predates gap recording.
The guard tested the raw URI, and the static file server decodes it, so an encoded path walked past: /image/%70ortraits/silhouette-index.json was served. The guard now percent-decodes and resolves . and .. segments before both of its checks. Through the real chain, before this change: 200 /image/%70ortraits/silhouette-index.json 200 /image/portraits%2Fsilhouette-index.json 200 /image/./portraits/silhouette-index.json 200 /%69mage/portraits/silhouette-index.json 200 /image/%70ortraits/bangs/l9_bangs_01.png (no X-Robots-Tag) an-encoded-path-cannot-get-past-the-guard: 5 failures. After: all four 404, the piece keeps noai, and the test passes.
Artists can edit their credits, and __BRANDING__ wrote them into a <script>. They now come from GET /dnd/5e/portrait-artists (JSON, cached a minute), the same merge refresh! computes; __BRANDING__ carries operator settings only. The browser fetches them at start into app-db and portrait-assets; the thumbnail credit, the drawer's attribution and the PDF bake subscribe, so anything drawn first updates when they arrive. A PDF exported before then carries the registry's public default. Server renders are unchanged. Escaping stays for operator settings. Fail states, before this change: - an-artist-credit-is-never-written-into-the-page: FAIL, the saved credit "Fuss</script><b>MARK</b>" was in the page HTML. - the-credit-updates-when-the-credits-arrive, with the subscription taken out: FAIL, the thumbnail still read "Art: Fusspot" after the credits arrived.
Every image git tracks (or would commit), docs/ included, must now be a
recorded silhouette or an entry in test/reviewed-images.edn matched by
SHA-256 with what it is. orcpub.portrait-art-guard-test and the GitHub
check (scripts/check-images.sh) both enforce it. The 44 existing images
are recorded; all were added between 2020 and August 2026, before the
portrait art existed.
A linework score alone could not be the gate: the licensed pieces score
0 to 23% (median 6.7), the repo's own logos and favicons 4 to 18%, and a
real-art composite 2.5%. So the score is shown to the reviewer and every
new image needs a person to look at it.
Fail state, with samples of the real art from outside the repository:
test: FAIL docs/img-check/sample-composite.png (linework 2.5%)
FAIL docs/img-check/sample-piece.png (linework 4.1%)
CI script (samples committed in a throwaway worktree): exit 1, errors
for both, and for a real piece in place of bangs/l9_bangs_01.png.
orcpub.portrait-store owns the drawings: files named by character id and fingerprint in PORTRAIT_STORE_DIR (default data/portraits; a shared volume serves several containers), behind the bounded memory cache, every draw through the portrait work pool. - On save, the fingerprint is compared with the kept file: autosaves of unrelated edits schedule nothing; a changed portrait is drawn once, 3 s after the last save of a burst, with what was saved last; a removed portrait's files are deleted. A save never waits for a draw. - On request: memory, then the file, then a draw. Characters saved before this are drawn on their first request and kept. - The fingerprint no longer mixes in a per-process timestamp, which made every restart a new fingerprint; it digests the registered art files and the drawing code instead, so a kept file outlives a restart and any art or drawing change draws again. - Files, not Datomic: it keeps every past value and is not for large values. Decided in an earlier session in chat only; now recorded in docs/PORTRAIT-SERVING.md. Setting documented in .env.example, docs/ENVIRONMENT.md and docker-compose.yaml. Fail states (each behaviour undone in turn, portrait-store-test run): - every save schedules a draw: a-save-draws-only-when-the-portrait-changed FAIL (an unrelated save was not :kept) - saves never draw (the code before this): 6 failures in a-save-draws-only-when-the-portrait-changed and a-burst-of-changes-is-drawn-once - no coalescing, each save draws its own version: a-burst-of-changes-is-drawn-once FAIL - the per-process fingerprint put back: a-kept-drawing-survives-a-restart FAIL (drawn again), plus 2 failures and 1 error elsewhere - kept files never read back: a-kept-drawing-survives-a-restart FAIL
Drops internal work and fixes to things this branch built (startup log, print size limit, the security lines); adds the email greeting change and the fix for a late save replacing another character in the builder. No What's New entry: the artist-pages branch writes one for the whole feature.
b6f71d7 moved seed->int and mulberry32 into orcpub.dnd.e5.portrait-random but left dev/orcpub/portrait_gallery.clj calling them in portrait-assets, so the gallery no longer loaded ("No such var: pa/mulberry32"). Nothing in the test suites compiles dev/, which is why it went unnoticed. Fail state: loading the gallery under the :tools profile failed with that error before this change; it loads and runs after it.
…efuse it orcpub.art-mark reads and writes the PNG iTXt chunk (keyword orcpub-art) the Silhouette Loom now writes into the real art (agents/develop 95fd0a2). The chunk goes in after IHDR, so the image data is untouched; the browser and the JVM write the same bytes. - Drawn from marked pieces, marked too: the server's drawings (so their stored files), strand files, the browser's bake, the exported PDF (its document information) and the dev gallery. Silhouettes have no mark, so nothing drawn from them has one. - scripts/private-art.sh keeps the marks and stamps any piece laid in without one (packs from before Loom v2.41, such as v1.775). - The guard (portrait-art-guard-test, scripts/check-images.sh) refuses any marked file anywhere in the repository before its other checks. - docs/PORTRAIT-PACK.md states the limits: a screenshot or any outside tool drops the mark, so the reviewed list and the owner's contact-sheet review stay as the other layers. Fail states, before this change, with real art from outside the repository (the pack exported by Loom v2.41, ORCPUB_MARKED_PACK): - art-mark-drawing-test: 5 failures. A composite of the marked real pieces, a strand file from marked art and a PDF with a marked portrait were all unmarked, so the guard did not see the composite. - check-images.sh: a marked real piece wrongly listed as reviewed passed the old check (exit 0); the new one refuses it (exit 1). - private-art.sh on an unmarked real pack: the old script laid in 28 unmarked pieces; the new one stamps all 28. A Loom-marked pack keeps its marks under both. Pixels matched the pack in every run. - art-mark-test (cljc), with the browser's CRC corrupted: 2 failures; the bytes are pinned to what the JVM writes, checked against zlib.

The

| # Branch changelog — `claude/character-portrait-generator-hOutO` | ||
|
|
||
| ## Why this branch exists | ||
|
|
||
| Characters could only have a portrait by pasting an image URL. This adds a paper-doll | ||
| compositor: layered line art by an illustrator, stacked in fixed z-order and tinted from the | ||
| character's own colours, with a seeded Randomize. | ||
|
|
||
| It is **not** AI image generation. Every asset is pre-authored art, and attribution is a | ||
| first-class part of the feature rather than a footnote. | ||
|
|
||
| Scope notes for review: | ||
|
|
||
| - The real art is not in the repository. `resources/public/image/portraits/` holds the | ||
| anonymised silhouettes from the illustrator's tooling at the paths the art will occupy; | ||
| the art pack (prepared in the Silhouette Loom, kept on `agents/develop` under | ||
| `agents/loom/`) is laid in on the private deployment branch only (`scripts/private-art.sh`); | ||
| the image build writes the strand files. No code changes between the two. | ||
| - The art licence (`ARTISTS.md`, a directory `LICENSE`, a carve-out from the root EPL-2.0) | ||
| still needs the commission paperwork and the illustrator's agreement. Not in this branch. | ||
| - Unfinished work is behind Developer mode (split dye, the runtime see-through fill, an | ||
| alternative far-iris placement) or listed in `docs/PORTRAIT-ROADMAP.md`. | ||
|
|
||
| ## Added | ||
|
|
||
| - **Characters:** a portrait builder: pick or randomize layered art for hair, head, ears, eyes, | ||
| nose, mouth and shirt, from the summary thumbnail, beside the Image URL field, or in a Portrait | ||
| tab in the builder. | ||
| - **Characters:** portrait colours per character for hair, skin, eyes, eye whites, lips and shirt, | ||
| with a lighter, darker or different colour for any single piece. | ||
| - **Characters:** hair ombré with streaks that follow the drawn strands, a shine you can place, | ||
| dyed bangs, and soft shadows where hair falls over the face. | ||
| - **Characters:** eyes with slit or goat pupils, a different colour for each eye, brightness, and | ||
| glowing eyes. | ||
| - **Characters:** blush, freckles and shading under the hair. | ||
| - **Characters:** mood light: torch, moonlight or arcane, as a lit edge, a cast or a rim. | ||
| - **Characters:** the artist is credited under the portrait, on the sheet, in shared link previews | ||
| and in the picture itself, with the links the artist chose. | ||
| - **Printing:** the portrait prints on the exported character sheet, at full resolution. | ||
| - **Sharing:** a shared character link previews with the character's own portrait, and the | ||
| preview updates when the portrait changes. | ||
| - **Accounts:** a preferred name, used to greet you in site emails. | ||
| - **Accounts:** artists get an account with a welcome email and can change how they are credited | ||
| on My Account. | ||
| - **Site:** pages and portrait images ask AI crawlers not to train on them. | ||
|
|
||
| ## Changed | ||
|
|
||
| - **Accounts:** site emails greet you by your preferred name, or by your username when you have | ||
| not set one, instead of "Hi there". | ||
| - **Characters:** the builder's tab bar wraps on narrow screens. | ||
|
|
||
| ## Fixed | ||
|
|
||
| - **Characters:** a late save for one character no longer replaces another character open in the | ||
| builder, along with its unsaved edits. | ||
| - **Sharing:** link previews of shared characters failed on Discord, Mastodon, Slack, Telegram and | ||

Lower-case artist emails with Locale/ROOT, not the JVM default locale.
clojure.string/lower-case calls .toLowerCase() with no argument, so the JVM default locale controls the result. On a Turkish-locale JVM, "Iris@Example.test" becomes "ırıs@example.test" with a dotless ı.
The same call appears at three sites:
- Line 48 in
parse-confignormalises the configured:account. - Line 71 normalises stored emails inside the
users-with-emailDatalog query. - Line 314 normalises the confirmed email in
on-email-confirmed!.
The two sides of the comparison fold the same way, so lookups still match each other. The bug is in the stored value. create! writes the folded account as :orcpub.user/email, and the welcome email goes to that address. If the configured address contains an uppercase I, the artist account gets an undeliverable email address. The welcome link never arrives.
This PR already fixes the same problem in username-base (Line 87) and orcpub.artist-links/ascii-lower. The config-parsing test computes its expected value with clojure.string/lower-case, so the test fails to catch this under the Turkish locale run.

Replace locale-dependent lowercasing in parse-config, users-with-email, and

Re-running setup with --force sources the existing .env and then calls generate_env, which generated a new PROFILE_ENCRYPTION_KEYS unconditionally, making every stored preferred name unreadable. A key already set is now kept; a new .env still gets a fresh one. (CodeRabbit) Fail state: run-script-test FAIL before this change (an existing key came back replaced); passes after.
The parser took everything up to the first / as the authority, so https://evil.test\x.twitch.tv/ passed validation and was shown with the Twitch mark, while a browser reads the backslash as a path separator and opens evil.test. The host must now be letters, digits, dots and hyphens (an international domain in its xn-- form still passes). (CodeRabbit) Fail state: links-must-be-https FAIL twice before this change, for the backslash and the %2f forms; passes after.
The server stores whatever text a save sends for the portrait. Deeply nested data (20,000 brackets) overflowed the EDN reader's stack with a StackOverflowError, an Error the reader's catch missed, so the public character page, the image route and the save itself failed. (CodeRabbit) - parse-portrait reads at most 8,000 characters (a full portrait is about 1.5 KB) and catches Throwable on the JVM. - A save drops a portrait the server cannot read instead of storing it; the rest of the character is saved. Fail state: a-crafted-portrait-cannot-break-the-character, 3 errors (StackOverflowError) before this change; passes after.
:portrait/save wrote the portrait into the character without set-changed, so a character with no other edits stayed unmarked, and when a queued autosave answered later, :set-character replaced it with the server copy, dropping the new portrait without a word. It now marks the character changed like every other edit. (CodeRabbit) Fail state: saving-a-portrait-marks-the-character-changed FAIL before this change (:changed nil); passes after.
The Docker image runs from / as a non-root user that can write only /tmp,
so the default PORTRAIT_STORE_DIR (data/portraits, relative) resolved to
an unwritable /data/portraits, and a failed write threw out of the request:
on a default deploy every new shared-link portrait would have failed.
(CodeRabbit)
- The default is now orcpub-portraits under the system temp directory.
- A write that fails is logged and the drawing is served; it is drawn
again next time.
- The image creates /var/lib/orcpub/portraits owned by the app's user, so
a shared volume mounted there is writable; .env.example, compose and the
docs point there. (Not exercised in a container: Docker runs here, but
the runtime base image could not be pulled, rate-limited by Docker Hub.)
Fail states before this change:
- a-store-that-cannot-write-still-serves-the-drawing: ERROR
(FileNotFoundException out of the request)
- the-default-store-is-writable-in-the-image: FAIL ("data/portraits")
git-files did not check git's exit status, so outside a work tree, or with git missing, it returned no files and both repository-wide guard tests passed having checked nothing: a false green on the licensing guard. It now waits for git, throws on a non-zero exit, and drops blank lines. (CodeRabbit) Fail state: the-guard-fails-when-it-cannot-list-files FAIL before this change (no exception outside a repository); passes after.
The doc gave /character/:id/portrait.png; route_map serves it at /pages/dnd/5e/characters/:id/portrait.png. (CodeRabbit)
Three Playwright actions were not awaited; only fixed sleeps kept the steps in order, and a failed action became an unhandled rejection rather than a failure of that step. (CodeRabbit) With a bad option value forced in: the old script carried on and crashed on an unhandled rejection; the new one stops at that step and its harness reports it. Both exit 1. The probe passes (0 failing).
run decremented the waiting count after the work finished, so a caller holding a permit stayed counted: queue-depth and export-queue-depth reported waiting plus running, Retry-After came out too long, and the export's "N waiting" log line ran high. (The export code this was generalised from counted the same way.) The count now drops as soon as the wait for a permit ends. (CodeRabbit) Fail state: a-running-job-is-not-counted-as-waiting FAIL before this change (1 while one job ran and nobody waited); passes after, with the export and probe tests unchanged.

…n test's extraction The portrait-save test now resets app-db to its own fixture instead of adding to what earlier tests left, and the ./run key test first checks that generate_env still sets the key where it reads it, so a change to the script's layout fails with a clear message. Test-only. (CodeRabbit)
The owner named the release: the portrait work ships in the Summer update, as it has not gone live. The branch's lines go under Summer Patch by change type and the portrait joins the release highlights. No What's New entry here: the artist-pages branch writes one for the whole feature.
index.clj rendered through hiccup.page/html5, which writes strings unescaped. Integration never puts the character's name in <title>, but this branch does, so a saved character named Zed <b>MARK</b> was served as <title>Zed <b>MARK</b></title> on its public page. - The page renders with hiccup2.core/html behind the same doctype, so every string is escaped. Raw, each marked with why: the page's own inline scripts and styles, the spinner's markup (one of three keywords), the favicon helper's markup, and the branding JSON (escaped for a script by script-json). No user text is inside any of them. - views.cljs: the unused raw-html helper (dangerouslySetInnerHTML) is gone. Fail state: page-escape-test, 3 failures before this change: the public character page carried <b>MARK</b> as markup, and so did <title> and the meta description. Passes after. Output compared before and after: an ordinary page is byte for byte the same; the splash page differs only in "D&D" now written "D&D", which renders the same. The /artists/<slug> check belongs on the artist-pages branch, which has that route.
portrait.cljs injected its CSS as two strings (drawer-styles, ~700 lines, and empty-slot-styles) in [:style] elements, and set 22 inline style maps. All of it is now orcpub.styles.portrait, compiled into the app stylesheet last (where the injected sheet sat in the cascade). - Static inline styles became classes: .portrait-composite, .portrait-layer (+ -shadow, -multiply, -screen, -art, -tinted), .pl-thumb-box. - Values from data are CSS variables set on the element: --pl-z, --pl-art, --pl-tint, --pl-fill (with .pl-fill), --pl-logo, --lk-mark-color, --lk-icon. The light canvases are shown and hidden with the hidden attribute instead of writing style.display. - The -webkit-mask-* keys in the tinted layer's style map were dropped by React; as CSS they now apply. - The long reasons that lived in CSS comments are in docs/PORTRAIT-STYLES.md; the Garden comments are four lines or fewer. Equivalence: the compiled Garden for the two old strings, parsed and compared declaration by declaration with the originals: 804 declarations, same selectors, order and at-rules. Differences are only Garden's minified spellings (0.6 -> .6, none -> 0, lower-case hex, "button + button" -> "button+button", "0% 50%" -> "0 50%") and the two intended variables on .lk-mark and .lk-ico. Browser, both themes: screenshots of the Portrait tab empty and composed, a colour panel open, and the full-screen drawer (10 shots) are pixel-identical before and after. Test: orcpub.styles.portrait-test. Seen failing on the code before this change: 2 [:style] elements (lines 2245, 2322), 22 inline styles that set more than CSS variables, the style.display writes, and 9 of the portrait rules missing from the app stylesheet. Passes after. lein test: 981 tests, 0 failures. CLJS: 737 tests passed. Probes: portrait_compositor, portrait_pdf_export, portrait_tab, character_image_capture, natural_armor_ring pass. lein lint: 0 errors.
Description:
Characters could only have a portrait by pasting an image URL. This adds a paper-doll compositor: layered line art, stacked in fixed z-order and tinted from the character's own colours, with a seeded Randomize. On top of it: hair ombré with strand-following streaks, shine and shadows; eye pupils, a second eye colour and glowing eyes; blush, freckles and skin shade; mood light (torch, moon, arcane); and artist accounts with a preferred name and artist-editable credit.
Not AI image generation. Every asset is pre-authored art by one illustrator, and attribution is a first-class part of the feature: the credit follows the picture onto the summary, the exported sheet, the share card, and into the pixels of the composed image itself.
