Description

The host back button in embedded iOS auth and profile views waits for a JavaScript round trip to leave a native navigation screen. Pop the native route that contains the view directly when possible, with the existing onHostBack callback as the fallback. Repeated taps during the pop are ignored.

The route is found through view controller containment rather than the responder chain, because the responder chain continues from a presented modal to the screen behind it. The route is only popped when it is the top of its navigation stack. A view presented in a modal, or at the root of a stack, falls back to onHostBack.

To verify, push an embedded auth or profile view onto a native navigation stack and use its host back button, including repeated taps. Then present one in a modal above a pushed screen: host back should call onHostBack and leave the screen behind it in place. Check that onHostBack still handles navigation when no enclosing native route can be popped.

AuthView pushed onto a @react-navigation/native-stack route (header hidden), host back tapped three times: the route pops once natively and onHostBack is never called.

Pushed route After host back (×3)
Embedded AuthView on a pushed native-stack route Back on Home after three host back taps, onHostBack calls: 0

AuthView as the stack's root screen: there is nothing to pop, so each host back tap falls through to onHostBack.

Root AuthView after two host back taps, onHostBack calls: 2

AuthView in a containedModal above a pushed screen, host back tapped three times. Before this change, the screen behind the modal was popped and onHostBack never ran. Now onHostBack runs once, dismisses the modal, and the pushed screen stays.

Modal over pushed screen Before: host back (×3) After: host back (×3)
Modal AuthView presented over the pushed Nested screen Before: back on Home, the pushed screen behind the modal was popped, onHostBack calls: 0 After: modal dismissed, still on the pushed Nested screen, onHostBack calls: 1

📝 Walkthrough

On iOS, host-back actions in embedded auth and profile views now attempt to pop an enclosing native navigation route. They call or dispatch onHostBack only when no route is popped. The host tracks route-pop progress and resets that state when it detaches or the transition completes. Tests cover navigation roots, pushed screens, child controllers, and modal cases. The callback documentation now distinguishes iOS and Android behavior.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Suggested reviewers: mikepitre

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7e378

The iOS back-button change is otherwise mergeable, but the linked public guidance should be updated so developers know when onHostBack runs.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7e378

The change is limited to embedded iOS navigation and includes checks against popping an unrelated route. No concrete security bypass was established. Callback compatibility and interrupted or overlapping navigation transitions remain the main uncertainties.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated new authority is dismissal of an enclosing route in the embedding application's iOS controller hierarchy. The inspected host-back handlers select no tenant, account, credential or remote resource; broader effects of application-supplied callbacks remain outside the supplied consumer coverage.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Top-controller identity and parent-only traversal constrain which route can be popped. The supplied tests assert fallback for a host below the top screen and for modal hosts, including a modal presented from a nested stack. These checks counter an unrelated-presenter pop, without proving every custom containment layout.

Follow view controller containment instead of the responder chain, which
continues from a presented modal to the screen behind it, and only pop the
enclosing route when it is the top of its navigation stack. Otherwise fall
back to onHostBack.
