Summary

Stacked on #1213. This PR does #1140 without block ORE: the dynamic path stops restating vitaminc's vocabulary, equality and match terms derive through vitaminc-normalize, so TextEq compares text in Unicode 16 NFC, and a boolean has no order term. It is PR 2 of 3; the next is #1188.

The issue was written against a vitaminc 0.6.0 that only renamed Value. The vitaminc branch this stack is pinned to (vitaminc #439 to #445) deletes the value tree for frames and Plaintext, so the plan is adapted to that model.

  • Equality derives through vitaminc-normalize. An equality term is the PRF over the value's normalized bytes under vitaminc's domain for its kind, read through that crate's Terms sink. café written with a precomposed é and with e and a combining accent is one term, every integer width of one number is one term (34u32 and 34i64 match), both float widths of one number are one term, and a date, timestamp, decimal or uuid has a domain of its own. KeysetCipher::equality_term, target::equality, the Equality index and op::Eq take a Plaintext where they took a PrfValue. A boolean, a null or a container has no term (TermError::NoEqualityTerm), and text with a code point unassigned in Unicode 16 is refused (TermError::Normalize). The typed path and the dynamic path end in the same function, so a probe from any language still finds a Rust-written term.
  • Match text is cut in Unicode 16 NFC by the same crate, on the stored side, the query side and in verify. A query of text with no normal form is refused when it is awaited; a decrypted value with none verifies against nothing.
  • dynamic::Value and dynamic::Scalar are gone. FfiValue is Clone itself (the deep copy into fresh Protected payloads that Value made) and is the plaintext of every field lowered from data. dynamic::term takes any Plaintext and walks it to its one scalar with a sink, deriving there from the Physical value vitaminc hands it: no copy of vitaminc's vocabulary. IndexSpec::defines(value) replaces IndexSpec::supports(&scalar), and dynamic::admits reads the same table over kinds. admits keeps only stack's own rules: match takes text, ORE and OPE take an integer of at most 64 bits, a float, text or bytes. Equality is vitaminc's table, so float32 and float64 fields now admit equality.
  • A boolean has no order term, and the kind rule allowing one is gone: with two values, it would tell anyone holding the column which rows are true.
  • The guest walks a term's frame in place. se_term parses the value's frame and hands it to dynamic::term without decoding a value tree, as vitaminc's own guest walks a frame into encryption.
  • FfiValue and ValueKind stay. The frame model makes them redundant for a term, not for the rest: a plan, an options object and a record source are data the engine reads and splits, and a field's value must be owned and Clone to outlive the buffer it arrived in and go into the batched pending. ValueKind is the plan's "type" vocabulary. eql-bindings' hand-written and generated code use both unchanged; mise run types:check passes with no regeneration.
  • vitaminc-normalize is patched in four of the five blocks: the root, the encrypt guest, packages/stack-encrypt/fuzz and the EQL workspace. The credential guest builds no crate that uses it, so a patch there would only be reported as unused; it joins that block if it ever does.
  • eql-bindings: Hmac256 encrypts from any Plaintext, the feature no longer depends on vitaminc-prf, and its CHANGELOG and the eql-text-equality-transcoding changeset now say equality is NFC.

Every equality and match term changes bytes; the domains move to /v2. ORE and OPE terms do not change. No stored data exists to keep. The pins in tests/term_bytes.rs and tests/frozen_bytes.rs, the record fixture (tests/fixtures/record_lowering.json, which the Go fixture test reads) and the EQL TextEqQuery fixture (tests/encryption/fixtures/text_eq_query.json, also read by Go) are regenerated.

What waits

Tests

  • stack-encrypt: typed equality is defined for one scalar with a domain and refused for a boolean, a null, containers and unassigned code points; equality is one term per NFC string and per number at every width, whichever path derives it; a frame walked in place derives what its FfiValue does, the 8- and 16-bit integers and a UINT8 included; a 128-bit integer has an equality term and no order term; admits agrees with defines for every kind and admits equality exactly where vitaminc has a domain; a boolean is refused for every term kind through term, the Index impl and a plan; a match query is cut in NFC and refuses text with no normal form; FfiValue::clone copies every leaf into fresh payloads. The trybuild snapshots are re-recorded under Rust 1.94.1 for the Plaintext bound.
  • Guest: the native tests refuse a boolean under every kind and accept a float under equality.
  • Go: the refusal tests and the stashgen fake engine follow the new table.
  • EQL: TextEq matches the same text in its other normal form and still keeps case and whitespace.

Test plan

  • mise x --env test -- cargo nextest run --workspace --all-features: 1129 passed, then 594 in stack-encrypt after the last test edits.
  • cargo mutants --in-diff over stack-encrypt and stack-auth: 99 mutants, 58 caught, 41 unviable, none missed.
  • mise run test:doc, mise run doc, mise run wasm:wasi-check, mise run wasm:no-http-test.
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets with and without --all-features, -D warnings; cargo fmt --check in the root, the fuzz crate and both guests.
  • mise run wasm:guest:test in full (the eql steps included) and mise run wasm:auth-guest:test.
  • wasm:guest:build, wasm:guest:build:deterministic, wasm:guest:build:eql, wasm:guest:build:eql:deterministic, wasm:auth-guest:build.
  • The four stack-encrypt fuzz targets replay their corpus (-runs=0, nightly).
  • scripts/go-binding-test.sh languages/golang (gofmt, vet, go test ./... with every guest built) and golangci-lint.
  • EQL, as test-eql.yml's Rust job runs it: test:crates, test:encryption, check:encryption:wasi, types:check, and test:encryption:postgres against a local PostgreSQL 17.5. node scripts/lint-no-eql-registry-pins.mjs and the eql-suite-ci, eql-workflow-filters and crates-ci script tests.
  • cargo publish -p eql-bindings --dry-run --all-features: not run, for the reason given on feat(stack-encrypt)!: move the stack crates, the guests and the Go module onto vitaminc ADR 0001 #1213 (the packaged crate resolves stack-encrypt and vitaminc from crates.io).
  • The 386 Go run (Linux only), macOS and Windows Go jobs: CI.
  • CI.

Part of #1140

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Equality searches now treat canonically equivalent Unicode text as equal using Unicode 16 NFC normalization. Case and whitespace remain significant; text containing code points unassigned in Unicode 16 is rejected.
    • Equality terms for integer and floating-point values now work across widths.
  • Changed

    • Boolean values are no longer supported for equality or ordering indexes; floating-point equality is supported.
    • Equality and text-match terms use new formats, so previously generated terms may no longer match.
    • Short text that produces no match tokens cannot be stored or queried.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR changes equality and match term derivation to use Unicode 16 NFC normalization, and updates dynamic value handling and index admission. It also revises EQL and Go integrations, related explanations, and fixtures.

Changes: Term derivation and integrations

Layer / File(s) Summary
Normalized equality and match terms
Cargo.toml, packages/stack-encrypt/Cargo.toml, packages/stack-encrypt/src/sem/*, packages/stack-encrypt/src/sem/tokenize.rs, packages/stack-encrypt/tests/*, .changeset/*, packages/stack-encrypt/CHANGELOG.md
Equality and match derivation normalize input using Unicode 16 NFC and use /v2 domains. Normalization failures are returned for unassigned code points. Tests cover equivalent NFC text, updated term bytes, and normalization errors.
Direct dynamic value and frame derivation
packages/stack-encrypt/src/dynamic/*, packages/stack-encrypt/tests/record_lowering.rs, packages/stack-encrypt/tests/fixtures/*, languages/golang/encrypt/guest/src/ops.rs
Dynamic term and record paths use FfiValue directly instead of the Value wrapper and Scalar conversion. The Go guest parses term inputs as frames and validates them with IndexSpec::defines. FfiValue gains deep cloning and label conversion.
Index admission and Encrypt bounds
packages/stack-encrypt/src/dynamic/kind.rs, packages/stack-encrypt/src/op/mod.rs, packages/stack-encrypt/src/target/*, packages/stack-encrypt/tests/index.rs, packages/stack-encrypt/tests/ui/*, languages/golang/encrypt/guest/tests/*, languages/golang/stashgen/*
Float equality is admitted. Boolean equality and boolean ORE/OPE terms are refused. Equality APIs use Encrypt bounds instead of PrfValue; tests cover the updated admission and error cases.
EQL bindings, targets, and fixtures
packages/eql/crates/eql-bindings/*, packages/eql/crates/eql-codegen/src/*, packages/eql/tests/encryption/*, languages/golang/encrypt/eql/eql_gen.go
EQL binding requirements and target explanations are updated. Encrypted query and row fixtures reflect the revised term derivations.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 63739

Correct the typed Go query handling and update the TextMatch documentation before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 63739

Encrypted-search behavior changes across languages. A mismatched numeric query can now succeed but match nothing. Compatibility with previously generated terms also depends on the stated assumption that none have been stored. No privilege escalation or plaintext disclosure was established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · inferred: Widened equality admission exposes a declared-field-domain mismatch in Go. Cipher.Derive checks that the field declares the requested index, but marshals the query value without converting it to the field's kind. A float64(34) probe for a uint64 field can therefore now succeed with a float-domain term that does not match the stored integer-domain term; the base rejected float equality. Shared guest validation does not repair this because it receives the index family, not the declared field kind. The established consequence is silent query failure, not a demonstrated security bypass.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The established compatibility reach covers equality and match indexes produced through Stack Encrypt and its EQL/Go consumers. The demonstrated Go mismatch affects a probe under the selected field context; it does not establish access to another keyset or field context.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — EQL uses the same table-and-column context for ciphertext authentication, key descriptors, and equality derivation. This preserves context binding independently of the new normalization semantics. At Go ingress, shared scalar admission remains a control, but it must not be mistaken for declared-field-kind enforcement.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make the pre-persistence release condition explicit before rollout. If previous-generation terms can exist, use a coordinated reindex or an independently identifiable term generation with defined rollback behavior rather than relying on the unchanged ciphertext marker.

Review attestation

Source: automated /code-review (medium) followed by /cross-check-review-findings, run by Claude Code on head 90cb025.

Blocking or critical issues: none found.

Scope read: the term derivation (dynamic/term.rs), the sem equality and match changes, tokenize.rs, dynamic/kind.rs (admits/defines), and the Go guest's in-place frame walk (ops.rs). I did not run the test suite, and I read the fixture and lock-file regenerations only as a diff stat.

Checked and found sound:

  • Typed and dynamic equality end in the same function (equality_of_normalized), so Rust and binding terms compare equal.
  • normalized() rejects a container, a null or a boolean, even a container holding one scalar.
  • Domains are bumped to /v2 for equality and match, so old terms are not silently matched.
  • Booleans are refused for equality and for ORE/OPE.
  • ORE/OPE text and bytes are Zeroizing.
  • admits is tested against defines.

Non-blocking notes (inline):

  1. Text containing a code point unassigned in Unicode 16 is now a hard write failure for TextEq and Match columns, not only for queries. Confirm this is intended and note it in the CHANGELOG.
  2. ORE/OPE text is not NFC-normalized, so ordering and range comparisons can disagree with TextEq on equivalent strings. Record this as a known gap.

Out of scope: the vitaminc git-rev patches are temporary, as the PR states.

What changed in this PR

Updates Stack Encrypt’s typed and dynamic term derivation to use normalized values, continuing the migration in #1213 toward #1140. Block ORE and publishing remain deferred.

Changes:

  • Normalize equality and match text to Unicode 16 NFC, with versioned term domains.
  • Replace dynamic value wrappers with FfiValue and scalar frame walking; reject dynamic boolean order terms.
  • Update EQL adapters, Go validation, fixtures, and dependency declarations.

An independent review of this PR found no blocking issues; fixed in 675dd78's parent, 37b9d2c:

  • Boolean order terms: the typed path (ore_term, the Ore/Ope indexes, a plan) still stored order terms for a bool, which the dynamic path refuses. It now refuses with the new TermError::NoOrderTerm, before any key is minted.
  • Equality on a bool: this now fails when the term is derived rather than at compile time. A test pins it, and the CHANGELOG says so.
  • Unicode 16 writes: the CHANGELOGs and the @cipherstash/eql changeset now say text with a code point unassigned in Unicode 16 is refused on write too, not only on query.
  • Stale reasons: the catalog's IntegerEq/BigintEq/RealEq/DoubleEq reasons said things this PR made false. They now name vitaminc 0.6's release as the gate, and are regenerated, including the Go eql_gen.go.

Copilot's error-classification finding is fixed in 675dd78.

Rebased again onto #1213's CI fix, so the current IDs are: boolean order-term fix 8f17842, refused-term fix b8c1e94. New in 391a4df: the fuzz crate's lockfile still listed orderable-bytes, rust_decimal and borsh, which vitaminc-normalize no longer takes in at the pinned commit, so cargo --locked refused it.

…c-normalize so text compares in Unicode 16 NFC

An equality term is now the PRF over the value's vitaminc-normalize
encoding under vitaminc's domain for its kind, read through that crate's
Terms sink: one term per number whatever its width, text in Unicode 16 NFC,
and no term for a boolean, a null or a container. Match text is tokenized in
the same normal form. The equality and match domains move to /v2 and the
pins and the record fixture are regenerated; ORE and OPE do not move.
vitaminc-normalize is not on crates.io, so it joins the vitaminc patch
blocks of every workspace that builds stack-encrypt.

Part of #1140
…Plaintext and give a boolean no order term

dynamic::Value and dynamic::Scalar restated vitaminc's vocabulary: one to
make an FfiValue Clone, the other to pick a Rust type per variant. FfiValue
is now Clone itself and is a plan field's plaintext, and dynamic::term
takes any Plaintext, so a guest walks the frame it was handed in place and
the term derives from the scalar vitaminc hands the sink.
IndexSpec::defines replaces supports, and admits reads the same table over
kinds: equality is vitaminc's (floats now have a domain, booleans none),
match takes text, and ORE and OPE refuse a boolean, whose order term would
tell anyone holding the column which rows are true.

Part of #1140
…refuse order terms on a boolean

se_term parses the value's frame and hands it to dynamic::term without
decoding it into a value tree. The stashgen fake engine and the Go tests
follow the engine's new table: a float takes an equality term, a boolean
takes no equality or order term.

Part of #1140
…pt's normalized equality term

Hmac256 encrypts from any Plaintext, eql-bindings no longer depends on
vitaminc-prf, the EQL workspace patches vitaminc-normalize, and the
TextEqQuery fixture the Go SDK reads is regenerated.

Part of #1140
…rms, and follow the Encrypt rename

Rebased onto next, which carries the EQL v4 types and their fixtures.
This PR moves match tokens into vitaminc-normalize's form and the match
terms to their /v2 domain, so every match filter changes bytes: the
pinned `alice` positions in v4_types.rs, the query operand in
v4_queries.json and the stored filters in v4_rows.json are regenerated
here (the Rust fixture with EQL_UPDATE_FIXTURES=1, the rows by the Go test
over the deterministic EQL guest). No eql_v4 filter has been released, so
re-pinning costs nothing.

The doc links this PR adds name vitaminc's source trait by its new name,
`Encrypt`, and the trybuild expectation follows it.
…oo, and say what moved to runtime

Review follow-ups.

A boolean had no order term only through `dynamic`: cllw-ore orders a
`bool`, so `KeysetCipher::ore_term(true, ..)`, the `Ore` and `Ope` indexes
and a plan `with::<bool, _>(Ore)` still stored a term that splits a column
into its true and false rows. ORE and OPE derivation now refuses a `bool`
with the new `TermError::NoOrderTerm` (`stack_encrypt::no_order_term`),
before any key is minted, on every typed path. Equality on a `bool`, which
used to fail to compile, now satisfies the `Encrypt` bound and fails with
`NoEqualityTerm` when the term is derived; a test pins both, and the
CHANGELOG says so.

The CHANGELOGs and the `@cipherstash/eql` changeset now say that text with
a code point unassigned in Unicode 16 is refused when it is written to an
equality or match column, not only when it is queried.

The EQL catalog's reasons for `IntegerEq`, `BigintEq`, `RealEq` and
`DoubleEq` said vitaminc derives no float equality term and per-width
integer terms, which the engine no longer does; they now name the gate,
vitaminc 0.6's release, and the tables, the Go `eql_gen.go` and the
eql-bindings README and module docs are regenerated or reworded to match.
Two doc lines still called vitaminc's source trait `Plaintext`.
Copilot review. An equality- or match-indexed string with a code point
unassigned in Unicode 16 passes a plan's boundary checks, and derivation
refuses it with `TermError::Normalize`. On the record path that error
went through `lifted`, which boxed every dynamic error into
`crate::Error::Other`, so a guest reported a term failure as
STATUS_INTERNAL where a standalone term reports STATUS_TERM. A cipher
error is already the crate's and now passes through unchanged; a test
writes such text under both indexes.
ORE and OPE still order text as its raw UTF-8, while equality and match
terms derive from its Unicode 16 NFC form. On a column with both an
equality and an order index, two forms of `café` are one value to `=` and
two to an ordering. `ore_of`'s rustdoc and the CHANGELOG now record this
as a known gap, to be closed with block ORE (#1140).
…n reaches only through admit

The mutants gate found Match's verifier and QueryTokens::of untested: the chain takes the query's tokens through admit, which the match index overrides, so replacing either with an empty default changed no test. The new unit test builds a query from the verifier and checks it verifies a row holding the tokens and refuses one that does not.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Normalize typed query values before se_term.

Cipher.Derive sends the caller’s value directly to se_term. For a uint64 field with an Equality index, float64(34) now passes the broadened Equality check and derives a float-domain term. Stored records use the declared uint64 term, so the query can return no match.

Convert or reject the value against f.Kind before vcffi.Marshal(value). Do not restore global float rejection because float Equality fields are now supported.
