fix(metrics): a breaker state set before prom-client loads cannot overwrite a newer one (LAB-12963) - #320
setCircuitBreakerState had the same pre-load race #317 fixed for the L1 gauges. Before prom-client loaded, each call queued updateCircuitBreakerState, which awaits whenReady(). initialize() sets isReady before ready resolves, so a state set in that gap took the synchronous path and was then overwritten by every state queued before load. cachekit_circuit_breaker_state could read open while the breaker was closed until the next operation.
Fix
Mirror pendingL1: before load, keep only the latest state in pendingBreaker (no promise per call; the first call still runs whenReady() once, so an init failure is still reported). initialize() publishes it in the same synchronous run that sets isReady = true. A gauge error in that flush goes to handleError and does not fail init. After a reported init failure, nothing is queued or published. updateCircuitBreakerState and every public signature are unchanged.
Tests
New: a breaker state set as prom-client finishes loading is not overwritten by earlier ones (real prom-client, state set from a microtask queued in registerMetric). Fails on e28cd6e (expected 1 to be +0), passes here.
the per-attempt calls stop awaiting the failed load once it has reported passes unchanged.
Full suite: 80 files, 2872 passed. test/node-entry/first-load-context.test.ts passes on Node 22.23.4. Lint and typecheck (src and tests) pass.

…rwrite one set after load
Before load, setCircuitBreakerState keeps only the latest state and
initialize() publishes it in the same run that sets isReady, beside the
pending L1 stats, so no queued pre-load update resumes after a newer set.
Circuit-breaker metrics now publish the latest state set while Prometheus is loading.
Errors from conflicting gauge labels are reported without preventing other metrics from recording, both before and after loading completes.
Documentation
Clarified when pending L1 and circuit-breaker gauge values are published.
Walkthrough
CacheMetrics now queues the latest circuit-breaker state while Prometheus metrics initialise and publishes it when ready. Tests cover updates during registration and label errors. The README describes the loading-time behaviour for circuit-breaker and L1 gauges.

Summary
Queue and publish breaker state packages/cachekit/src/metrics/prometheus.ts, packages/cachekit/src/cache.metrics.test.ts, packages/cachekit/README.md
CacheMetrics stores the latest breaker state before metrics are ready and publishes it during initialisation. Tests cover updates during registration and label errors. The README includes the circuit-breaker gauge in its loading-time note.
cachekit-io/cachekit-ts#286: Adds defaultLabels to metric label schemas, which relates to the tests for a breaker gauge that lacks a required label.
cachekit-io/cachekit-ts#317: Retains and publishes the latest L1 gauge values during initialisation; this change applies similar handling to the circuit-breaker gauge.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 10adc
The breaker-state race is addressed, but an unusual custom-gauge error can still disable subsequent metric recording. This is a bounded, low-risk issue suitable for owner awareness or a focused fix.

…e load
Covers the catch arm of writeBreakerGauge on both paths: initialize()
publishing the pre-load state, and a state set after load. The gauge is
registered by the application without the collector's default label, so
real prom-client rejects the write.

Keep gauge error reporting from failing initialization.
If a reused breaker gauge throws a value that cannot be converted to a string, handleError throws during the pending flush. Initialization then reports failure despite being ready, and asynchronous metric methods stop recording. Make gauge error reporting non-throwing.
