perf(redis): send the key-registry SADD+EXPIRE in the same pipeline as the SET (LAB-7115) - #660
A tracked decorated write on PerRequestRedisBackend sent its SET, waited for the reply, then sent a second pipeline with the key-registry SADD + EXPIRE. It now sends all three in one non-transactional pipeline: one Redis round trip per tracked write instead of two, and on the async miss paths one asyncio.to_thread hop instead of two.
Covered call sites: the sync miss, both async misses (with and without the distributed lock) and the write-behind writer. The SWR revalidation sites keep the separate call: no backend that reaches them tracks keys.
How
PerRequestRedisBackend._set_tracked (private) chains SET (no EX when ttl is None or ≤ 0, as set does), SADD and EXPIRE on one pipeline(transaction=False) and runs execute(raise_on_error=False). Whether the value was stored depends on the SET reply alone. A SET error reply or a failure of the whole pipeline raises a classified BackendError, as set does. A SADD/EXPIRE error is returned, not raised.
track_key and _set_tracked queue the registry commands through one helper, _registry_add, so a change to the registry's commands is made in one place.
StandardCacheHandler.set_tracked / set_tracked_async return None when the backend class has no _set_tracked (the same pattern as set_streaming), and the caller then makes today's two calls. Otherwise they return whether the value was stored, and pass a registry error to the wrapper's existing throttled Key tracking failed warning.
StoreOutcome.tracked tells the sync miss not to track again. The wrapper offers the registry id only when the resolved backend tracks keys, so other backends skip the probe.
KeyTrackableBackend, the ck:reg: registry id and the set's 7-day TTL are unchanged.
A SET that fails inside the pipeline can still leave its key in the registry set, because a pipeline does not roll back, and neither would MULTI. The next drain unlinks the missing key without error, and the set's expiry bounds the member until then. A test covers this.
Evidence
Round trips per N tracked writes (count of sends carrying a cache SET or a SADD): N fused, 2N on the separate path, for the sync miss, the async miss with and without the lock, and the write-behind writer (tests/integration/test_tracked_write_redis.py). The separate path is reached by removing _set_tracked from the class, which is the path every write took before this change.
Async thread hops: the separate path takes exactly N more hops than the fused path over N misses, with and without the lock.
Error injection on real Redis: a SET error reply (an ACL user without SET) gives stored=False and nothing reaches the caller. A SADDWRONGTYPE still stores the value and logs Key tracking failed. A dropped connection gives stored=False.
The existing key-registry tests pass unchanged. tests/unit/backends/test_redis_backend.py's fake client gains a minimal pipeline: the fused SET now goes through pipeline(), which the fake did not have.
Instruction gate, miss path against this PR's base: +0.42%, under the 1% bound. l2_hit: −0.03%.
Docs
docs/features/l1-invalidation.md (tracking now adds no round trip, and what a failed SET leaves in the set) and docs/backends/redis.md (one round trip per operation now includes a decorated write).
…s the SET
A tracked decorated write on PerRequestRedisBackend now sends SET, SADD and
EXPIRE in one non-transactional pipeline (a private _set_tracked), and on the
async miss paths in one thread hop: one round trip per write instead of two.
The write's success is the SET reply alone; a registry error stays advisory
and goes to the existing throttled 'Key tracking failed' warning. A backend
without _set_tracked, or a custom handler strategy without set_tracked, keeps
the separate track_key call. KeyTrackableBackend, the registry id and the
set's TTL are unchanged; track_key and the fused write share one helper for
the registry commands.

### [1/2] src/cachekit/backends/redis/provider.py:55
Issue identified during code review:
Missing type safety in `_registry_add()`: the `pipeline` parameter and return value are typed as `Any`, although the argument is always a redis-py pipeline, so type checking is disabled for every caller (also in `tests/unit/backends/test_redis_backend.py:489`). If a caller passes the raw Redis client instead of a pipeline, or misuses the returned object, mypy reports nothing and the error appears only at runtime. Fix: annotate with `redis.client.Pipeline` (or a TypeVar bound to it) and return the same type, or define a Protocol with `sadd(...) -> Self`, `expire(...) -> Self`, and `execute(...)`.
---
### [2/2] src/cachekit/cache_handler.py:2483
Issue identified during code review:
Overbroad exception handler in `src/cachekit/cache_handler.py`: `except Exception` logs the error and returns False, which turns programming errors into an ordinary 'not stored' result (also at lines 2639-2641). An AttributeError on `_set_tracked` is reported as a failed cache write, and the real bug is hidden. Fix: catch only the expected backend exceptions (`BackendError`, `TimeoutError`, `ConnectionError`) and let everything else propagate, or log it and re-raise with a bare `raise`.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Redis-backed cache writes that include key tracking now complete in a single network round trip, reducing write overhead.
A successful cache write remains successful if key tracking encounters an error. Tracking issues are reported separately, and affected keys can be recovered during a later cleanup.
Failed writes may leave a registry entry that cleanup removes; expiry limits how long that entry remains.
Documentation
Updated Redis backend and key-invalidation guidance to clarify write round trips, tracking errors, and key expiry behaviour.
Walkthrough
Redis tracked writes now pipeline cache storage and key-registry updates when the backend supports fusion. The handler and decorator report storage and tracking outcomes separately. Tests and documentation cover fused writes, fallback paths and error handling.
The Redis backend pipelines SET, SADD and EXPIRE for tracked writes. If SET succeeds but a registry command fails, the backend returns the classified tracking error separately.
Handler and decorator integration src/cachekit/cache_handler.py, src/cachekit/decorators/wrapper.py
The handler and decorator use fused writes when supported and retain fallback paths. StoreOutcome.tracked reports whether tracking accompanied the write. Tracking errors are reported without changing the stored result.
Validation and documented behaviour tests/integration/test_tracked_write_redis.py, tests/unit/backends/test_redis_backend.py, docs/backends/redis.md, docs/features/l1-invalidation.md, .secrets.baseline
Tests cover round trips, thread hops, TTLs, and write and tracking failures. Documentation describes the pipeline and registry behaviour. The secrets baseline updates a finding line and generation timestamp.

on_track_error is required, so a registry error can never be dropped
silently. The SWR guard moves into the one capability predicate, and the
stale_ttl parameter it was carried by goes. store_result and the
write-behind writer share _set_l2 instead of two copies of the fallback.

…track_key
The fused write was inherited by any PerRequestRedisBackend subclass, so an
override of set (a TTL cap, extra writes) or track_key stopped running.
Fuse only when both come from the class that defines _set_tracked.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
An instance-bound set or track_key, or a subclass that intercepts lookup
with __getattribute__, still passed the class-level check and was bypassed.
Fuse only when the instance's own set and track_key are the plain methods
of the class that defines _set_tracked.
When the class defining _set_tracked inherits set or track_key, its namespace
holds neither, and a plain function bound on the instance has no __func__,
so None matched None and the instance override was bypassed. Require the
owner's own function.

… itself
The recorded functions bound to another backend (delegation by instance
assignment or __getattribute__) passed the guard, so the fused write landed
in this backend's namespace while reads went to the delegate's.
