Owner

What

A take-over that re-binds a task's claude_session_id to a new session drops the outgoing owner. The displaced session then matches no task, so session-self-exit.py and close-worker.py refuse it (no task carries claude_session_id <sid> / no task file carries this session id as claude_session_id) and it can never exit or be closed.

Observed in production: session 60573438-cfc7-4b40-968f-065669208a4b was displaced by bfd1ac2c-… and stranded.

Approach

vault-cli task set <task> claude_session_id <new> appends the displaced, different, non-empty owner to metrics_sessions before storing the new id, in the same single WriteTask. metrics_sessions is the field the exit and close paths already read, and work-on's persistSessionAndMetrics already implements the same contract for the other path.

A first bind, a re-bind to the same value, and the deliberate clears (completion, spawn failure, task clear) keep their current behaviour. The Vault UI reaches the same task set path, so it inherits the fix with no change of its own.

Verification

  • make test — exit 0
  • make precommit — exit 0
  • pkg/ops/frontmatter_session_takeover_test.go — 7 specs passing (take-over, first bind, same value, empty replacement, order preserved, narrowness, unreadable task)
  • integration/task_set_session_takeover_test.go — 3 binary-level specs passing (AC1/AC3/AC4, AC2, AC5)

Artifacts

  • specs/in-progress/063-bug-take-over-bind-drops-outgoing-session.md — kind: bug spec, audited (8/10, no Critical)
  • prompts/spec-063-append-outgoing-session-on-rebind.md — prompt with unit and binary-level acceptance coverage

…ssion id

`vault-cli task set <task> claude_session_id <new>` replaced the owner and
appended nothing, so a displaced session matched no task and could never be
resolved by session-self-exit.py or close-worker.py.

Append the outgoing id to metrics_sessions before storing the new one, in the
same single WriteTask. A first bind, a re-bind to the same value, and the
deliberate clears keep their current behaviour.

Chunk 1/4

Suite file confirmed — the ast-grep suite-finding was a false positive. The new test lives in the same integration_test package and is discovered by the existing integration_suite_test.go.

No correctness issues found in the diff. The appendDisplacedSession call at line 144 runs before task.SetField (line 160) and WriteTask (line 169), so the in-memory append lands in the single write — correct.

Chunk 2/4

Now I have all the information needed. Let me compile the review findings:

Verification Summary:

  1. Suite file exists — pkg/ops/ops_suite_test.go contains RunSpecs(t, "ops Test Suite") — the ast-grep "missing suite" finding is a false positive (the rule likely couldn't see the companion file through the relation layer).

  2. WriteTaskReturns(nil) — Counterfeiter-generated mock methods return void; the nil is the mock's "returns nil error" configuration, not a returned value being discarded. False positive.

  3. pinned.SetNow(...) — The SetNow method on libtime.CurrentDateTime is void (standard pattern for time-setter methods). Likely false positive.

  4. FindTaskByNameReturns(nil, errors.New(ctx, "boom")) — This correctly returns (nil, error) — it IS the return value being tested. False positive — the ast-grep rule misidentified this as a bare call.

Implementation Review of appendDisplacedSession (frontmatter.go:186-195):

  • Correctly reads previous before SetField overwrites it
  • Appends to metrics_sessions with the pinned timestamp
  • Guard: key != "claude_session_id" || previous == "" || previous == value — covers first bind, same-value rebind, and non-session-id keys
  • Single WriteTask persists both new id and recorded outgoing id together

Integration test (integration/task_set_session_takeover_test.go): End-to-end test via CLI confirms the behavior against the actual binary.

CHANGELOG and docs: Updated correctly.

Chunk 4/4

Based on my thorough review of this chunk (spec 063), I have completed the analysis. Here's my assessment:

Review Summary:

The chunk 4/4 file specs/in-progress/063-bug-take-over-bind-drops-outgoing-session.md is a well-crafted specification that accurately describes a correctness bug and its fix. The spec correctly identifies:

  1. Root cause: task set claude_session_id <B> overwrites the old owner without recording it anywhere, making the displaced session unresolvable
  2. Correct fix: Append the displaced owner to metrics_sessions before storing the new id
  3. Edge cases properly handled: First bind (no previous owner → no append), same-value re-bind (no append), and deliberate clears unchanged

Implementation verification:

  • pkg/ops/frontmatter.go:186-195 - appendDisplacedSession correctly implements the logic
  • pkg/ops/frontmatter_session_takeover_test.go - Unit tests cover all ACs (AC1-AC6)
  • integration/task_set_session_takeover_test.go - Integration tests verify end-to-end behavior
  • docs/work-on-session-lifecycle.md - Updated to reflect the internal exception (lines 76-85)
  • CHANGELOG.md - Unreleased entry documents the fix

Minor process note: The spec file remains in specs/in-progress/ with ACs unchecked. This is a process artifact - the implementation is correct and verified by tests.
