fix(api): return 400 for malformed memory-context locators - #1885
Malformed memory-context locators raised ValueError from normalization and escaped the v2 route as HTTP 500. Reject them at the API boundary with a bounded 400 before traversal, while preserving the normalizer's reason and keeping genuine context-service failures visible. Add API and MCP boundary regressions.
Tests:
full SQLite unit suite: 9022 passed, 82 skipped
test-int-sqlite: 678 passed, 91 skipped
typecheck, ruff check/format: passed
Postgres/testcontainers: not run locally (Docker unavailable); CI will cover.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Malformed memory locators now return a clear client error rather than appearing as an internal server error.
Ambiguous memory identifiers return a conflict response, while service failures remain server errors.
Improvements
Context requests accept valid relative paths and equivalent memory:// locators, providing consistent results across both locator formats.

Walkthrough
The v2 memory-context route returns HTTP 400 for malformed locators, preserves HTTP 409 for ambiguous identifiers, and records terminal request-span outcomes. API and MCP tests cover locator validation and error reporting.

Summary
Locator validation, outcomes, and regression coverage src/basic_memory/api/v2/routers/memory_router.py, tests/api/v2/test_memory_router.py, tests/mcp/test_tool_bm_context.py
The route defers locator errors until after the request span. It maps malformed locators to HTTP 400 before context traversal and preserves HTTP 409 for ambiguous identifiers. The span records input_rejected, failed, or success; tests cover these outcomes, valid locator forms, and MCP error reporting.
basicmachines-co/basic-memory#1879 — The route changes address the issue’s malformed-locator HTTP 500 by returning HTTP 400 before context traversal.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to b875a
Malformed locators receive actionable errors, while context-service failures remain server errors. No merge-blocking issue was established.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to b875a
Malformed locators are rejected before context traversal. Valid requests retain the same project-scoped dependencies and traversal limits, while genuine service failures remain failures. No material security risk was found to be introduced or worsened.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed exposure is limited to error responses and route-span handling for the existing memory-context endpoint and its callers. The PR does not expand locator acceptance, project authority, traversal parameters, or repository access.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Attacker-controlled locator text is validated before context-service traversal. The new exception conversion is narrowly scoped to normalization, so a ValueError or other genuine failure arising later is not silently reclassified as malformed input.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Ordinary service and response-shaping exceptions retain failure visibility: the route records failed and re-raises. Regression coverage checks that a service exception remains HTTP 500 rather than becoming a validation response.

Explanation
The changes satisfy the coding requirements in #1879. get_memory_context converts normalize_memory_urlValueError to bounded HTTP 400 responses and preserves the rejection reason before traversal. API tests cover embedded schemes, empty and whitespace locators, invalid characters, malformed separators, valid relative locators, and memory:// locators. Tests also verify no traversal for rejected input, actionable MCP feedback, preserved 409 ambiguity responses, visible 500 service failures, and bounded success, input_rejected, and failed outcomes without recording locator content.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 4 functions across 3 files.
Resolution
