Fixes #1873.

Forward-reference resolution refreshed relation search rows on the write, watcher, and project-index completion paths but left relation vector chunks stale, so semantic search kept returning the unresolved link text. Thread an optional vector sync through relation resolution and pass the embedding backend from each local path; a search-only reindex still builds no vectors. Existing stale chunks can be refreshed with bm reindex --embeddings.

Tests:

  • affected tests: 103 passed
  • full SQLite unit suite: 9020 passed, 82 skipped
  • test-int-sqlite: 678 passed, 91 skipped, 40 deselected
  • typecheck, ruff check/format: passed

Postgres/testcontainers: not run locally (Docker unavailable); CI will cover.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Relation changes discovered during indexing are now reflected in embedding search results when embeddings are enabled.
    • Search-only reindexing continues to resolve relations between notes without creating or syncing embedding vectors.
    • Resolved relations are synchronized in batches after relation processing, helping keep stored relation content consistent with search results.
    • Deferred synchronization is retried when possible, improving the chance that affected notes are fully updated.

Forward references resolved on the write, watcher, and project-index completion paths refreshed relation search rows but left their vector chunks stale, so semantic search kept returning the unresolved link text (basicmachines-co#1873). Thread an optional vector sync through relation resolution and pass the embedding backend from each local path; a search-only reindex still builds no vectors.

Walkthrough

Relation resolution now syncs vectors for affected sources when a vector-sync backend is provided. Project-index completion, local event indexing, and scheduled resolution supply that backend when embeddings are enabled. Search-only indexing resolves relations without syncing vectors.

Changes: Relation vector synchronization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Sync vectors after relation resolution
src/basic_memory/indexing/relation_resolution.py, tests/indexing/test_relation_resolution.py
The resolver accepts an optional vector-sync backend and syncs sorted affected entity IDs after resolution passes finish. It retries deferred IDs while pending chunk counts decrease and reports failed or remaining deferred IDs. Tests cover batching, retries, failures, and empty batches.
Wire vector sync to indexing paths
src/basic_memory/index/local_project.py, src/basic_memory/index/local_runtime.py, tests/index/test_local_inline_result_recorder.py, tests/index/test_local_project_index.py
Project-index completion and local event indexing provide vector sync when embeddings are enabled. Tests check sync ordering, search-only indexing, and relation-chunk consistency.
Wire vector sync to scheduled resolution
src/basic_memory/index/local_schedulers.py, src/basic_memory/deps/services.py, tests/index/test_local_schedulers.py, tests/test_deps.py
The local scheduler accepts and forwards vector sync, and its dependency provider supplies the search service. Tests check sorted batches and relation-chunk consistency.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: phernandez

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to c3c23

Resolved relations refresh vectors when enabled, and incomplete work remains marked for retry. No material merge blocker was identified.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to c3c23

The inspected paths preserve project isolation and embedding opt-outs while repairing stale vectors. No new security bypass was established. The change adds an embedding dependency to completion paths, and incomplete work still depends on later recovery; deployment and interruption behavior are only partly validated.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected new write scope is affected source-note vectors within the configured project. Vector preparation independently filters source rows and existing chunks by repository project identity, rather than trusting integer entity IDs alone.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No introduced cross-project or embedding-opt-out bypass was established in the inspected local call chain. Relation repair reaches the existing policy-enforcing service and project-filtered vector preparation. This conclusion does not establish coverage of external or custom backend implementations.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The resolver receives a backend object from local composition rather than introducing a new caller-supplied destination or credential. Project ownership predicates and embedding eligibility remain enforced downstream of the new call.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Failure containment retains separate controls for cache consistency and vector readiness: recorded-change invalidation retires the whole project on an exception, scheduler bookkeeping runs in finally, and readiness excludes entities marked as owing vector work. These controls limit incomplete repair without making relation and vector updates atomic.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1873 is the only direct, active linked issue. Its coding requirements are:

  1. Re-embed relation sources after forward-reference resolution. Implemented. resolve_project_relations (src/basic_memory/indexing/relation_resolution.py) accepts vector_sync. After the resolution passes settle, it syncs the affected entity IDs with vector_sync.sync_entity_vectors_batch. The change since the previous review replaces the single call with a drain loop. The loop re-syncs deferred_entity_ids and stops when none remain or when chunks_total - chunks_skipped stops decreasing. The loop always terminates because that count is a non-negative integer that must strictly decrease.
  2. Index completion path. Implemented. resolve_project_index_completion_relations forwards vector_sync. run_local_project_index (src/basic_memory/index/local_project.py) passes runtime.embedding_vector_sync if request.embeddings else None.
  3. Search-only reindex builds no vectors. Implemented by the request.embeddings condition in item 2. Search-only requests pass None, so the sync step is skipped.
  4. Write path. Implemented. get_relation_resolution_scheduler (src/basic_memory/deps/services.py) passes vector_sync=search_service. LocalRelationResolutionScheduler (src/basic_memory/index/local_schedulers.py) declares the optional field. Both the cache-enabled and cache-disabled branches pass vector_sync=self.vector_sync. I confirmed this in the current diff.
  5. Watcher path. Implemented. LocalInlineStorageEventResultRecorder (src/basic_memory/index/local_runtime.py) passes self.search_service if self.index_embeddings else None.
  6. BatchIndexer per-batch resolution is excluded by the issue. The PR does not change it, which matches the issue.
  7. Failed and deferred entity IDs are exposed on ResolveRelationsResult through the new vector_sync_failed_entity_ids and vector_sync_deferred_entity_ids fields. The PR objectives request this behavior.
  8. Tests. The PR adds tests for stored relation chunks matching refreshed relation search rows, search-only indexing with no source vector chunks, scheduler sync, watcher ordering and the disabled-embedding skip, the deps wiring, and the drain, deferred-retry, and failed-ID behavior. I did not run the tests. I read the test changes only from the summary.

Non-coding items are not assessed: the bm reindex --embeddings step for existing stale chunks and the note for hosted runtimes.

Limits of this review: I read the whole-PR diffs for relation_resolution.py, local_runtime.py, and local_schedulers.py. I did not inspect VectorSyncBatchResult to confirm that chunks_total and chunks_skipped measure pending work as the drain loop assumes. Postgres paths were not run by the author. The changed code is shared and does not branch on backend, so no backend-specific gap is evident.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Every changed file maps to issue #1873 or to the PR objectives that describe the same work. The source changes are:

  • The vector_sync parameter threaded through resolve_project_relations and resolve_project_index_completion_relations.
  • The post-resolution sync with the drain loop, the no-progress guard, and the failed and deferred ID fields on ResolveRelationsResult.
  • The four caller changes: index completion, the scheduler field, the watcher, and the deps provider.

The drain loop goes beyond the issue's single-call suggestion. It still serves the issue objective of re-embedding affected sources, and the PR objectives request it. The test changes cover these same paths. No unrelated refactoring, feature, or configuration change appears in the reviewed diffs or the PR summary. BatchIndexer and the search-only indexing path are unchanged, as the issue requires.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 54.55% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 11 functions across 10 files.

Consume the vector sync batch result instead of discarding it, drain
deferred shards with a no-progress guard, and expose failed/deferred entity
IDs on the relation-resolution result. Failed entities remain marked by the
vector backend for its retry/readiness path.
