E2E fails on every PR since ubuntu-latest moved to ubuntu-26.04 (seen on #841, run 41084680360, both attempts). The last green E2E was on 2026-10-15, on ubuntu-24.04.

Why it fails

  • ubuntu-26.04 ships Docker 29 (was 28.0.4), which defaults to the containerd image store.
  • make build docker.java8 loads skywalking/skywalking-java:latest-java8 into that store.
  • The pinned infra-e2e action (8c21e43) then writes {"features": {"containerd-snapshotter": false}} to /etc/docker/daemon.json and restarts dockerd. Docker switches back to the classic image store, and the image loaded in the previous step is no longer visible.
  • Compose builds the provider/consumer images FROM skywalking/skywalking-java:latest-java8, falls back to Docker Hub, and fails:
failed to resolve source metadata for docker.io/skywalking/skywalking-java:latest-java8: pull access denied

Fix

Pin apache/skywalking-infra-e2e@56ac8befeb5f910f2dc9339e65d07cd18953f90e (current main). apache/skywalking-infra-e2e#146 removed the snapshotter/restart step and the docker-compose v1 install, and runs compose through testcontainers-go. apache/skywalking already pins 68bbdec (after #146). 56ac8be adds only kind fixes and dependency bumps, and its CI passes on ubuntu-26.04.

The new action still exports ${<service>_host} / ${<service>_<port>}, loads init-system-environment into compose interpolation, builds services with build:, and honors depends_on: condition: service_healthy, which is everything test/e2e/case/{grpc,kafka} relies on. apache/* actions are always allowed by the ASF policy, so no allow-list change is needed.

The E2E jobs of this PR are the verification.

ubuntu-latest now resolves to ubuntu-26.04, which ships Docker 29 with the
containerd image store. The pinned infra-e2e action (8c21e43) disables the
containerd snapshotter and restarts dockerd before running the case, so the
agent image built and loaded by `make build docker.java8`
(skywalking/skywalking-java:latest-java8) is no longer visible. Compose then
tries to pull it from Docker Hub and both E2E cases fail with
"pull access denied".

Upstream infra-e2e removed that step in apache/skywalking-infra-e2e#146 and
runs compose through testcontainers-go. Pin the current main
(56ac8befeb5f910f2dc9339e65d07cd18953f90e), whose CI passes on ubuntu-26.04.

Folded into #841 (commit 63a9c97), together with removing the workflow's own actions/setup-go@v2 step. Its exported GOROOT (Go 1.24) breaks the new action's Go 1.26 build: compile: version "go1.24.13" does not match go tool version "go1.26.10".
