Stacked on #742; merge that first.

This PR settles what the public packages export for 4.0.0. It makes three changes, one commit each, and two of them are breaking. Every commit has an entry in UPDATING.md and passes ruff, test/unit and test/uts on its own.

ably.pubsub.server is the only import path 4.0 promises. UPDATING.md tells 3.x users to import from it, and says the packages beneath it are internal. Its __all__ had 42 names, though, and left out most of the types a client hands out. A channel.on() listener receives a ChannelStateChange and a connection.on() listener a ConnectionStateChange. presence.get() returns PresenceMessages and channel.status() returns a ChannelDetails. None of these could be imported from the public package. Every 3.x user rewrites their imports for 4.0, so any type missing that day gets imported from an internal path. The decision for 4.0 is one flat, complete namespace. It is exported from ably.pubsub.server, and ably.pubsub.server.sync mirrors it wherever the sync client has a counterpart.

Commits

  • Make PresenceAction an IntEnum. It is now an IntEnum, like MessageAction and AnnotationAction (TP2); before, it was a plain class of int constants. PresenceMessage.from_encoded wraps a known wire int into its member. That covers presence received over HTTP, in batch presence results and over a realtime connection, so the realtime presence map, the SYNC and the synthesized LEAVEs all hold members. An action the SDK does not know is kept as the int the server sent. Before, realtime/presence.py monkey-patched an _action_name helper onto the class. That is gone: event names now come from the member names, through a module function. to_encoded sends int(action), so the wire value is still a plain int in JSON and MessagePack. A member compares and hashes equal to its int, so == 2 still works. Migration: type(action) is int no longer holds. repr() of an action is now <PresenceAction.ENTER: 2>, and before Python 3.11 so is str()/%s (an f-string still gives 2). Use int() for the number and .name for the name.
  • Give the four remaining sync handle classes a Sync suffix. The generated HttpAnnotations, Presence, PushDeviceRegistrations and PushChannelSubscriptions are now HttpAnnotationsSync, PresenceSync, PushDeviceRegistrationsSync and PushChannelSubscriptionsSync. The change is four entries in unasync's rename_classes. Every handle a sync client hands out now ends in Sync, as ChannelSync, PushAdminSync and AuthSync already did. Renaming a class also changes the name its private attributes are mangled under. None of the four has a _<Class>__attr used outside its own body, in the library or the tests, so no _TOKEN_REPLACE entry is needed. A comment on rename_classes now says when one would be. The generated tree differs only in the four names and their uses. A runtime check confirms that no sync handle class shares a __name__ with its async class. The 38 sync exports that still share a name are the data types, enums, exceptions, crypto/vcdiff helpers, Options and the PubSubHttpClient prototype. Migration: code that names these classes, in an annotation or an isinstance check, uses the new names.
  • Export a flat, complete namespace. ably.pubsub.server adds 24 names, from 42 to 66, and ably.pubsub.server.sync adds 16, from 38 to 54. Every export is the internal class itself, not a copy or subclass. The sync exports are the generated classes under their own names. The HTTP channel and presence classes keep their names, Channel and Presence. Migration: none required, since names are only added. Imports that reached into ably.pubsub.types.*, ably.pubsub.realtime.* and so on should move to ably.pubsub.server.
Added to ably.pubsub.server Added to ably.pubsub.server.sync
States ChannelState, ChannelStateChange, ConnectionState, ConnectionEvent, ConnectionStateChange (realtime only)
Presence and stats PresenceMessage, PresenceAction, Stats the same
Auth and channel status TokenRequest, ChannelDetails, ChannelStatus, ChannelOccupancy, ChannelMetrics the same
Handle classes Channel, Presence, HttpAnnotations, PushAdmin, PushDeviceRegistrations, PushChannelSubscriptions ChannelSync, PresenceSync, HttpAnnotationsSync, PushAdminSync, PushDeviceRegistrationsSync, PushChannelSubscriptionsSync
Realtime handle classes RealtimeChannel, RealtimePresence, RealtimeAnnotations (realtime only)
From #737 and #740 InvalidArgumentException, DevicePushDetails the same

Push was already exported, as was PushSync. The sync package leaves out 12 realtime-only names: the five state types and the three realtime handle classes above, plus Connection, RealtimeChannels, PubSubRealtimeClient and create_realtime_client, which it never had.

Scoped down or skipped

  • Deferred, not exported: ConnectionDetails, MessageAnnotations, an ErrorInfo alias and ResponseHeaders. A test pins that they are absent from both packages. UPDATING.md says that a few attribute-only types are not exported yet.
  • Also found, not exported: AuthOptions, which client.auth.auth_options returns.
  • No class renames: HttpChannels and RealtimeChannels stay aliases of classes named Channels (sync: HttpChannelsSync → ChannelsSync). There is no HttpChannel/HttpPresence rename.
  • No py.typed in 4.0.
  • No UPDATING.md note that each same-named sync export is a separate class from the async one, so except ably.pubsub.server.AblyException does not catch what the sync client raises. That was decided against for 4.0.
  • Not fixed, pre-existing: the generated sync realtime channel writes _Channel__annotations, while its ChannelSync base reads _ChannelSync__annotations. The sync realtime tree is not exported and has no client, so nothing public reaches it. _TOKEN_REPLACE would need an entry if it ever is.

Tests

test/uts, measured at the parent and at each commit. Every tier ran separately under caffeinate with a watchdog:

parent v4-durations-seconds (585d28e) commit 1 commit 2 commit 3 (head)
without RUN_DEVIATIONS 1586 passed, 170 skipped 1586 passed, 170 skipped 1586 passed, 170 skipped 1586 passed, 170 skipped
with RUN_DEVIATIONS=1 143 failed, 1586 passed, 27 skipped 143 failed, 1586 passed, 27 skipped 143 failed, 1586 passed, 27 skipped 143 failed, 1586 passed, 27 skipped
test/unit 500 553 571 770

Every tier completed on its first attempt. The outcome of every test was diffed against the parent's in both modes, tier by tier, and every commit matches the parent test for test. The parent's 500 test/unit tests pass unchanged at every commit, and the increase is all new tests: 53, then 18, then 199, most of them parametrized cases of the export tables. The deviations.md figures were re-measured at each commit from the junit reports and the # UTS: comments, and they equal the file's at every commit: 1304 Test IDs pass (1313 tests, 1438 cases), 141 are gated (143 cases), 27 are unrun, REST 63/64 gated, realtime 78/79.

New unit tests:

  • test/unit/presence_action_test.py checks the members and their values, and == int. It checks decoding of every action in both the async and the generated sync tree, plus missing and unknown actions. It covers the HTTP presence and batch presence paths, and encoding to JSON and MessagePack as a plain int. It also covers the event names and the realtime presence map through a SYNC, a synthesized LEAVE and ENTER/UPDATE/LEAVE.
  • test/unit/sync_class_names_test.py checks that every handle class a sync client hands out ends in Sync, is the generated class and doesn't share a name with its async class. It also checks that the renamed classes read their own private state.
  • test/unit/pubsub_server_test.py::TestExports pins both __all__ lists. It star-imports each module and checks that every export is the object in its defining module. It checks that every async export has a sync counterpart or is on an explicit realtime-only list, that the deferred names are absent, and that the handle classes are the types both clients hand out.

test/uts/deviations.md has no row about these exports or about PresenceAction. The "presence actions are written as strings" spec-error entry still holds, so the file does not change.

The legacy test/ably suite was not run, and no file in it was edited. These files exercise the changed code, directly or through their generated test/ably/sync/http/ counterparts, and want a CI run:

  • test/ably/realtime/realtimepresence_test.py and test/ably/realtime/presencemap_test.py (PresenceAction members in the presence map, SYNC and LEAVEs)
  • test/ably/http/httppresence_test.py and test/ably/http/httpbatch_test.py (decoded presence actions)
  • test/ably/http/httpchannels_test.py (its generated sync test now imports and checks PresenceSync)
  • test/ably/http/httppush_test.py and test/ably/http/httpannotations_test.py (their sync runs construct the renamed classes)

The uts-to-python skill's note on presence event names now describes the IntEnum, not the monkey-patch.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Expanded the async and synchronous server modules with public access to additional client-provided types, including channel, presence, push, and statistics types.
    • Presence actions are now integer-compatible enum values; unrecognized action values remain available as integers.
    • Synchronous counterparts for additional client objects now use the Sync suffix.
  • Documentation

    • Updated migration and usage guidance for public imports, presence action names, and synchronous class naming.

owenpearson and others added 3 commits October 28, 2026 17:47
TP2 makes PresenceAction an enum, and MessageAction and AnnotationAction
already are IntEnums that decoding wraps wire ints into. PresenceAction
was a plain class of int constants, decoded actions stayed bare ints,
and the realtime presence code monkey-patched a name lookup onto the
class. Exported as it was, an annotation of PresenceAction would reject
PresenceAction.ENTER under a type checker, because that is an int.

PresenceAction is now an IntEnum with the same members and values.
PresenceMessage.from_encoded wraps a known wire int into its member,
so presence received over HTTP, in a batch presence result, or over a
realtime connection, and the members the presence map stores, hold
PresenceAction members; the LEAVEs and PRESENTs the library builds
already used them. An action this version does not know is kept as the
value the server sent, as before, so the presence map still ignores it.
to_encoded sends int(action), so the wire value stays a plain int in
both JSON and MessagePack. The event name a presence message is emitted
under now comes from the member's name, through a module function in
realtime/presence.py rather than the monkey-patched _action_name.

A member still compares and hashes equal to its int, so == 2 keeps
working. New unit tests cover the members, decoding of every action
over both trees, the HTTP and batch presence paths, encoding to JSON
and MessagePack, and the realtime presence map, SYNC and synthesized
LEAVEs. No UTS test changes outcome, so deviations.md does not change.
The uts-to-python skill's note on presence event names, which
described the monkey-patch, now says where the names come from.

This is a breaking change: type(action) is int no longer holds, and
repr() of an action, and str() before Python 3.11, give the member
rather than the number, as UPDATING.md describes.

unasync's rename_classes gives the generated synchronous flavour of a
class a Sync suffix, and covered the clients, Auth, Channels, Channel,
Push, PushAdmin, Http and the paginated results. It left out the HTTP
channel's Presence and HttpAnnotations and the push admin's
PushDeviceRegistrations and PushChannelSubscriptions, so those four
generated classes shared their __name__ with the async ones, and a sync
client handed out ChannelSync, PushAdminSync and so on beside an
unsuffixed Presence. The next commit exports the handle classes, and
the sync names have to be settled before they become public.

The four are added to rename_classes, so the sync tree now has
PresenceSync, HttpAnnotationsSync, PushDeviceRegistrationsSync and
PushChannelSubscriptionsSync, and every handle a sync client hands out
ends in Sync. Data types, enums, exceptions and the PubSubHttpClient
prototype keep their names in both trees.

Renaming a class changes the name its private attributes are mangled
under. Each of the four reads its own private attributes only inside
its class body, and nothing in the library or the tests reaches one as
_Presence__x, _HttpAnnotations__x, _PushDeviceRegistrations__x or
_PushChannelSubscriptions__x, so no _TOKEN_REPLACE entry is needed like
the existing _Channel__publish_request_body one; a comment on
rename_classes now says when one is. The generated tree differs from
before only in those four names and their uses, and the generated
test/ably/sync/http/sync_httpchannels_test.py now imports and checks
PresenceSync.

New unit tests check that every handle class a sync client hands out
has the suffix and is the generated class, that none shares a name with
its async class, and that the renamed classes read their own private
state. The UTS suite does not use the sync tree, so its counts and
deviations.md do not change.

This is a breaking change for code that names these four sync classes,
as UPDATING.md describes.

…flavour

ably.pubsub.server is the only import path 4.0 promises, and
UPDATING.md told users to import from it rather than from submodules,
but its __all__ had 42 names and left out most of the types a client
hands out. A channel.on() listener gets a ChannelStateChange, a
connection.on() listener a ConnectionStateChange, presence.get()
returns PresenceMessages, channel.status() a ChannelDetails, and a
user annotating a parameter as a RealtimeChannel had nowhere public to
import it from. Every 3.x user rewrites their imports for 4.0, so
whatever is missing that day gets written as an internal path.

ably.pubsub.server now also exports ChannelState, ChannelStateChange,
ConnectionState, ConnectionEvent and ConnectionStateChange;
PresenceMessage, PresenceAction and Stats; TokenRequest, ChannelDetails,
ChannelStatus, ChannelOccupancy and ChannelMetrics; the classes of the
objects a client hands out, Channel, Presence, HttpAnnotations,
RealtimeChannel, RealtimePresence, RealtimeAnnotations, PushAdmin,
PushDeviceRegistrations and PushChannelSubscriptions, beside the Push
it already exported; and InvalidArgumentException and
DevicePushDetails. That is 66 names. The HTTP channel and presence
classes keep their own names, Channel and Presence.

ably.pubsub.server.sync exports the same set, 54 names, apart from the
realtime client's: the five state types, RealtimeChannel,
RealtimePresence and RealtimeAnnotations join the four realtime names
it already left out. Each export is the generated class under its own
name, so the handle classes are ChannelSync, PresenceSync,
HttpAnnotationsSync, PushAdminSync, PushDeviceRegistrationsSync and
PushChannelSubscriptionsSync, and the data types keep their plain
names. Every export, in both modules, is the internal object itself
rather than a copy or a subclass. ConnectionDetails, MessageAnnotations,
an ErrorInfo alias and ResponseHeaders stay unexported for now.

New unit tests pin both __all__ lists, star-import each module, check
every export is the object its defining module holds, check every async
export has a sync counterpart or is on an explicit realtime-only list,
and check the handle classes are the types the clients hand out.
UPDATING.md lists the new names with a before and after import, gives
the earlier sections' examples their imports, and no longer implies
that every type is exported. The UTS suite imports from the internal
modules, so its counts and deviations.md do not change.

Not a breaking change: names are only added.

Walkthrough

Changes

The changes make presence actions integer enums, update realtime action-name formatting, add Sync suffixes to more synchronous classes, and expand the public exports in the async and sync server modules.

Presence Types and Event Names

Layer / File(s) Summary
Presence action handling
ably/pubsub/types/presence.py, ably/pubsub/realtime/presence.py, test/unit/presence_action_test.py, test/uts/helpers/presence.py, UPDATING.md, .claude/skills/uts-to-python/SKILL.md
PresenceAction is now an IntEnum. Encoding writes integer values, decoding converts recognized values and preserves unknown ones, and realtime event names use a module-level helper. Tests and documentation cover the updated behavior.
Synchronous class names
ably/pubsub/scripts/unasync.py, test/unit/sync_class_names_test.py, UPDATING.md
Four additional classes receive Sync suffixes. Tests check generated names, client handles, and private attribute access. The migration guide documents the suffixes.
Async and sync server exports
ably/pubsub/server/__init__.py, ably/pubsub/server/sync.py, test/unit/pubsub_server_test.py, UPDATING.md
The server modules export additional types and exceptions. Tests check export lists, object identities, async-to-sync mappings, and client handle types. The migration guide documents the import paths and exports.

Explanation

The title "pubsub: breaking changes to exports" matches the main theme of the changeset and PR objectives: the PR changes the public export surface for 4.0.0, including PresenceAction becoming an IntEnum, Sync suffixes on four generated sync handle classes, and the expanded ably.pubsub.server and ably.pubsub.server.sync export lists. It is somewhat broad and does not name the PresenceAction or Sync-rename changes, but it refers to a real and central aspect of the change and is not vague or misleading.

The types a client hands out or accepts are exported here too: the messages,
states and results it returns, and the classes of the objects it hands out,
such as :class:`RealtimeChannel` and :class:`Presence`, for annotations and
``isinstance`` checks. Those objects come from the client; construct them

Name the types that the package does not export yet.

The new docstring says the types a client hands out are exported from ably.pubsub.server. ConnectionDetails is returned by Connection.connection_details, but the package does not export it. from ably.pubsub.server import ConnectionDetails raises ImportError. The unit tests pin this deferral for ConnectionDetails, MessageAnnotations, ErrorInfo and ResponseHeaders, but the docstring does not state it.
