This PR addresses the validated findings from the lead review of the 2.0 integration branch. The -Duts.side=server CI legs now run the :core and :liveobjects conformance specs through the server door builders, where before they ran only the :uts smoke tests. The migration guide is completed and brought to parity with ably-go's 2.0 guide. The door builders now snapshot their options and strip the opposite side's agent entry. The remaining should-fix items (tests, push-token persistence, stale docs and CI leftovers) are also fixed.
Why
The parent PR is #1245 (integration/v2 into main). A lead-dev review found four must-fix items (F1-F4) and a set of should-fix items and nits (F5-F31). It also found several review threads that are resolved on GitHub but not actually fixed. This PR fixes everything in this repo that was in scope. Out-of-repo and process items are listed under "Deferred / out of scope" below.
Changes
CI and UTS wiring
F1 (T7):core/build.gradle.kts (runUtsUnitTests, runUtsIntegrationTests) and liveobjects/build.gradle.kts now forward -Duts.side / UTS_SIDE to the forked test JVM, as :uts already did. The server legs now run the conformance suites through PubSubServer builders:
No spec bypasses ClientFactories, apart from the intentional tokenConsumingClient in TokenRequestTest (the existing 40167 pattern). With the side forwarded, no spec failed, so no new skips were added.
F10 (C1): removed the dead matrix.android-api-level == 19 expression from emulate.yml. Added a comment that core-android's minSdk 19 floor (API 19-23 and the HttpURLConnection engine) is not covered by the emulator matrix. No legs were added.
F16 (T12):verifyReleaseArtifacts now expects the KMP device-jvm and device-android publications as well as the device root. It reads the multiplatform publications, so a dropped target fails the check.
F8 (T15, C2): deleted deploy/check-archives.sh. Nothing referenced it; verifyReleaseArtifacts and the release dry-run replace it.
F18 (I3): removed the dead BuildConfig.LIBRARY_NAME fields.
Door builders and side agents
F6 (T3, C6, R3): every door build() (server HTTP, server realtime, device realtime) passes options.copy() to the client. Reusing a builder, or mutating the options passed to clientBuilder(options), no longer changes clients that were already built.
ClientOptions.copy() now copies the agents, headers, fallbackHosts and transportParams containers instead of sharing them. Nested objects such as proxy, authParams and callbacks are still shared.
DebugOptions.copy() keeps every test hook.
A reflection test fails if a field is ever left out of copy().
Side.injectSideAgent removes the opposite side's identifier.
The Javadoc no longer says options are "handed rather than copied".
F30: additional Ably-Agent entries are emitted in alphabetical order, matching ably-go. The platform entry stays last.
F17 (C7): corrected the stale Side class Javadoc.
F3, F29: the PubSubServer Javadoc documents the token-auth caveat: 40167 unless the token carries the signed x-ably-clientType=server claim. The PubSubDevice example uses authUrl + clientId and warns against embedding an API key.
Tests
F7 (T6, T8, T13):
Literal "ably-pubsub-server" / "ably-pubsub-device" pins for each door.
A device Ably-Agent wire test.
A WebSocket agent query-param test for both doors. It asserts the family entry and the own side, and that the opposite side is absent.
A device no-auth error-path test (40000).
F15:
release() tests for FAILED (allowed) and for ATTACHING, DETACHING and SUSPENDED (each throws 90011/400 and the channel stays). They run on both UTS legs and are marked SDK-local, because the UTS spec has no test ids for these states.
RealtimeHttpHeaderTest derives the version from BuildConfig.VERSION.
Android push
F13:LocalDevice persists the registration-token type by name. On read, a legacy ordinal 1 (FCM) is migrated and kept. A legacy 0 (GCM, no longer supported), or any unrecognised value, clears the stored token so the device registers again. JVM unit tests cover the round trip and each migration case.
Option name kept
F28:idempotentRestPublishing keeps its name; the earlier rename was reverted to stay aligned with the spec and ably-go. UPGRADING.md says the name is kept deliberately (TO3n).
Docs
README restructure (F5, F4 README part): the README is restructured for the 2.0 device/server packages: install instructions for both doors (server via Gradle Kotlin/Groovy and Maven; device for Android and JVM, including Maven io.ably.pubsub:device-jvm), server and device quick starts, common configuration (endpoint, network client, proxy, logging), LiveObjects and further reading. The in-development branch note and the 1.x maintenance-branch promise are removed.
F20 (complete), wrapper-proxy Javadoc: the ClientOptions.endpoint Javadoc now warns against putting a port in endpoint (use port/tlsPort; localhost:8080 is treated as a routing policy name), matching UPGRADING.md. The HttpCore Javadoc no longer implies the HTTP client has createWrapperSdkProxy; only the pubsub-adapter realtime client has it.
F2, F3, F12, F13, F26, F27, F29, F31 (T11): UPGRADING.md is restructured in ably-go's order. It adds:
A Behaviour changes section covering: Channels.release() (RTS4c-e) with a before/after example and the checked AblyException; the ably-pubsub-java/ agent and side flags; the server token-auth caveat (40167); the options snapshot; the reauth UPDATE timing; push-token migration; and log tags.
The missing renames: Http to HttpRequester, AblyBase to PubSubBase, ChannelBase, io.ably.pubsub.network.*, the deleted pubsub-adapter Rest* classes, and the corrected HTTP publishAsync row.
A word-bounded rename script. It uses perl -pi, because BSD sed has no \b.
The corrected fallbackHostsUseDefault guidance, the hostname-endpoint fallback row, a "no port in endpoint" warning and the nonprod firewall patterns.
Device examples that use authUrl + clientId.
F14, F31: the one-door rule: depend on exactly one of io.ably.pubsub:server / io.ably.pubsub:device, never on core/core-android directly, and remove io.ably:ably-java / io.ably:ably-android. It appears in UPGRADING.md and the README.
F5 (T9, T11):
The README badge and install coordinates are io.ably.pubsub:server / io.ably.pubsub:device 2.0.0, and the LiveObjects coordinates are updated.
The device row of the support table says API 24.
The README links UPGRADING.md and adds the token caveat.
The proxy sample's import is fixed.
CHANGELOG.md gets a 2.0.0 (unreleased) entry.
F9 (C8, R1, R5):
uts/README.md uses :core instead of :java and shows the real server-leg commands.
CONTRIBUTING.md uses the .kts build files and has a correct okhttp-swap snippet and AAR path.
The tracked uts-to-kotlin skill files point at io.ably.pubsub and :core.
F22 (R2), F23: fixed the core/gradle.properties POM description and the API level in examples/README.md.
Breaking or behaviour changes introduced here
Options are copied at build(). Code that mutated a ClientOptions after build() and expected the client to see the change no longer works. The copy is shallow for nested objects (proxy, authParams, callbacks).
Opposite side identifier is stripped. A caller-supplied ably-pubsub-server on a device client, or ably-pubsub-device on a server client, is removed.
Push token persistence. The type is stored by name. Stored FCM tokens are migrated; stored GCM tokens are discarded and the device re-registers.
Agent order. Additional Ably-Agent entries are now sorted alphabetically. They were previously in HashMap order.
Addressed: the README no longer promises a 1.x maintenance branch (README restructure)

F4 / I2: 1.x maintenance branch. The README promise is removed (README part addressed, R4). Whether to cut a 1.x maintenance branch remains a process decision.
F11 / T5: docs site for the doors.javadoc.yml uploads only core through ably/sdk-upload-action. Adding server (or Dokka for device) needs a decision on the doc-site layout, such as a per-module artifact name, so that a second upload does not overwrite the first.
T14 / F25: ably-common registration of ably-pubsub-server / ably-pubsub-device (out of repo).
T4 / I1: IAM role and ably/features acceptance (out of repo).
F24 / I4: the API/binary-compatibility gate.
F14 Gradle capability: docs-only here, by lead decision.
F12: the reauth behaviour itself is documented only, by lead decision.
Cross-SDK items (review section 6), including ably-go's "default hosts unchanged" wording and alignment of the token-caveat wording.
Not in scope, left as follow-ups:
F19: DebugOptions exposes network types while network-client-core is implementation. The WebSocket wire tests use a raw ServerSocket for this reason.
F20: changing Defaults.isHostname itself. The "no port in endpoint" warning is in UPGRADING.md and the ClientOptions.endpoint Javadoc.
F21 hygiene items.
The remaining F15 gaps: HTTP-channel release, endpoint validation tests and pubsub-adapter wrapper tests.
An optional public-door test pinning 40167.
How it was tested / validated
Commands, run on a tree identical to this branch apart from later doc/comment-only commits:
:uts:runUtsIntegrationTests and the non-UTS integration suites were not run locally; CI runs them.
Proof that the side reaches the forked JVM: with -Duts.side=bogus, :core:runUtsUnitTests and :liveobjects:runLiveObjectsUnitTests fail with "Unknown uts.side". SideModesTest asserts the server stamp.
Validation: each change was checked by agents that did not write it.
Report-conformance validator: checked every finding F1-F31 and every review thread against HEAD, with file:line evidence. It found all lead decisions implemented and every deferral within scope, and commit hygiene clean (no issue references, no star imports, no local.properties). It found one gap, a stray settings.gradle in CONTRIBUTING; that is fixed.
Docs-accuracy validator: checked every snippet, rename row, coordinate, task name, host and the rename script (run against a sample on macOS) against the code. It found 11 inaccuracies and 7 nits: stale io.ably.lib / :java in the skill's mapping and script files, agent-order wording, the 1.x host-option wording, the AAR path, the CI commands in uts/README.md, and the "device cannot run on the JVM" comment. All are fixed in the last two commits, and a third independent validator re-checked them.
A lead review of the new release() tests replaced invented @UTS ids, which the skill's audit script would flag as orphans, with the SDK-local marker.
Rename script: it uses perl -pi -e rather than sed, because BSD/macOS sed has no \b. The simple, non-qualified name Http is not rewritten; UPGRADING says to rename it by hand.
DebugOptions.copy() returns a plain DebugOptions, so a subclass loses its runtime type when it goes through a door. The only subclass that goes through the doors is the UTS ClientOptionsBuilder, which has no extra state.
pubsub-adapter:RestClient.createWrapperSdkProxy was deleted in the integration branch with no HTTP-client counterpart. It is worth checking against the spec's wrapper-SDK-proxy points (WP*).
CHANGELOG: the 2.0.0 heading is marked "(unreleased)" because the file has no Unreleased convention. Adjust it at release time.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Version 2.0 offers separate server and device artifacts. Choose one when integrating; see the migration guide for updated coordinates and APIs.
Built clients retain a snapshot of builder and supplied options, so later changes do not affect them.
Behavior Changes
Server realtime token authentication requires a JWT with the signed server client-type claim.
Android device artifacts require API 24 or later. Existing push-token data is migrated to the updated format.
Channel release can fail while a channel is attaching, detaching, or suspended. Server-initiated re-authentication emits UPDATE after renewAuth completes.
Documentation
Updated setup, authentication, endpoint, and migration guidance is available in the README and upgrade guide.
…hing
Finishes the REST-to-HTTP rename for the last REST-named public option,
matching ably-go's WithIdempotentHTTPPublishing. The door builders'
setter is renamed with it. The Javadoc notes the specification (TO3n)
and 1.x name.
GCM was removed from RegistrationToken.Type, so the ordinals that
LocalDevice persisted shifted: a stored FCM (1) no longer resolved and
the token was silently dropped, and a stored GCM (0) was restored as FCM.
Store the type by name instead. When the key still holds a legacy int
ordinal, a stored FCM is kept and rewritten by name; a stored GCM, an
unknown ordinal or any other value is dropped with the stored token so
the device registers again.
Add the behaviour changes section (channel release rules, Ably-Agent
identifiers, server token-auth caveat, options copy, reauth UPDATE timing,
push token persistence, log tags), the missing rename rows, a word-bounded
portable rename script, the hostname-endpoint fallback and port guidance,
device examples that avoid embedded API keys, and the one-door rule.
Install coordinates, support table, one-door rule and the server
token-auth caveat move to the 2.0 artifacts, the proxy sample compiles,
the changelog gets a 2.0.0 entry, build file names and the okhttp swap
snippet are corrected, and the examples README states the real API floor.
The module is :core, the packages are io.ably.pubsub, and the HTTP test
helper is TestHttpClient. Document the server-leg commands, which must
include :core's tasks since the conformance specs live there.
The Ably-Agent header and the realtime agent param followed HashMap
iteration order, so the entry order varied between runs. Sorting by
name makes it deterministic for proxies and tests, matching ably-go;
the platform entry still comes last.
build() on both doors now hands the client options.copy() instead of
the builder's own object, so reusing a builder or changing the passed
options afterwards no longer reaches a client already built, and the
caller's agents map is never replaced. ClientOptions.copy() now copies
the headers and agents maps and the fallbackHosts and transportParams
arrays, DebugOptions.copy() reuses the same field list so it cannot
drift, and a reflection test fails when an option is not copied.
Side.injectSideAgent also removes the opposite side's identifier, so a
caller-supplied ably-pubsub-server on a device client (or the reverse)
no longer survives. Also fixes the stale Side class Javadoc, adds the
server token-auth (40167) caveat to PubSubServer, and replaces the API
key in the PubSubDevice example with authUrl.
Pin the literal side-flag strings, assert the Ably-Agent header and the
WebSocket agent query param for both doors, check that builder reuse
and mutation of the passed options do not affect built clients, that a
caller-supplied opposite identifier is stripped, and that a device
client without credentials fails like the server one.
Gradle does not pass -D properties to the forked test JVM, so the
server CI leg (-Duts.side=server) only reached :uts; the :core and
:liveobjects specs silently ran through the core constructors. Forward
the property (or UTS_SIDE) the way :uts does and run the server legs of
check.yml and integration-test.yml over :core, :uts and :liveobjects.
Delete deploy/check-archives.sh (nothing references it), drop the dead
API 19 -PhttpURLConnection expression from emulate.yml and note that the
emulator matrix does not cover core-android's minSdk 19 floor, remove
the unread BuildConfig.LIBRARY_NAME fields, and make verifyReleaseArtifacts
expect the real Kotlin Multiplatform device publications (device-jvm and
device-android) as well as the root one.
ChannelsCollectionTest only covered unknown, INITIALIZED, DETACHED and
ATTACHED. Add FAILED (release succeeds) plus ATTACHING, DETACHING and
SUSPENDED (release throws 90011 and leaves the channel in the map).

Walkthrough
This pull request updates client option copying and side-agent handling, adds tests for channel release and push-token migration, and changes release artifact verification. It also revises 2.0 documentation and updates UTS mappings, test tasks, and CI coverage.
ClientOptions.copy() clones selected maps and arrays. Device and server builders pass snapshots to built clients. Tests cover copy behavior and isolation from later builder or options changes.
Tests cover channel release after an attach error and release attempts while a channel is attaching, detaching, or suspended.
Push-token type migration core-android/src/main/java/io/ably/pubsub/push/LocalDevice.java, core-android/src/test/java/io/ably/pubsub/push/LocalDeviceTokenTypeMigrationTest.java
Token types are stored by name. Legacy FCM ordinal data is rewritten by name; unsupported values and associated token data are cleared.

Resolve the push-token migration compatibility issue before merging: existing FCM tokens can be discarded and require reactivation, while downgrading after a new-format write can fail. Manual AAR installation also omits a required network engine; smaller configuration and documentation issues remain.

Compare target publication coordinates in the release check.
The check builds the device target entries from the project GROUP property (line 89), not from each MavenPublication. It also never compares a publication's version with rootVersion. A target publication that overrides its groupId or version still matches the expected set, so the release pre-flight passes.

Clear unreadable token-type values instead of returning early.
When both typed reads throw ClassCastException, readPersistedTokenType returns at line 100, before the cleanup at line 112. The unreadable TOKEN_TYPE and TOKEN values then stay in storage, which contradicts the method's Javadoc.

Minor · Decide whether rollback must keep the persisted token type readable. · LocalDevice.java:149
Decide whether rollback must keep the persisted token type readable.
This release writes TOKEN_TYPE as a name. The previous release reads it with storage.get(TOKEN_TYPE, -1) and no catch. If a rollback build keeps the app's preferences, that read throws ClassCastException, and LocalDevice construction fails. Either keep writing the legacy ordinal for FCM, or document that rollback requires clearing app data.

Update the TOKEN_TYPE write in LocalDevice to preserve compatibility with
rollback builds that read the value as an integer; store the legacy FCM ordinal
instead of token.type.toName().
Minor · Add a runtime engine to the manual AAR steps. · CONTRIBUTING.md:244
The manual steps list only implementation dependencies. The HTTP and WebSocket engine is declared as runtimeOnly in core-android/build.gradle.kts. A project that follows only these steps has no engine. HttpCore and WebSocketTransport then call getFirstAvailable(), which throws IllegalStateException("No engines are available"), unless DebugOptions supplies an engine.
📝 Suggested doc fix
- Add the `implementation` (not `testImplementation`) dependencies declared in `gradle/libs.versions.toml` and `core-android/build.gradle.kts` to your project. This is because the `.aar` does not contain dependencies.
+- Add a `runtimeOnly` dependency on the `network-client-okhttp` module, or on `network-client-default`. The engine is not in the `implementation` list.
- Build/run your application.
Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base ce61a1b8b40d); the change keeps it reachable.

The migration tests call readPersistedTokenType directly. They do not construct LocalDevice or assert push.recipient. A regression that stops loadPersisted from calling setRegistrationToken can therefore pass these tests. Add coverage for a stored FCM type and token through the LocalDevice constructor, then assert that the restored registration token is present.

Correct the client type in the REST-fixture paragraph.
The paragraph says the helper "still uses only the public AblyRest". The helper does not use AblyRest. It builds its client with HttpClientFactory.create(...), which returns PubSubHttpClient. AblyRest is no longer public, so a contributor who follows this paragraph can select a removed type.

Cover the FCM-only ordinal-zero state.
The merge-base FCM-only release persisted FCM as ordinal zero. The migration now deletes that token as legacy GCM. legacyGcmOrdinalIsDropped therefore accepts a real upgrade regression. Ordinal zero is ambiguous with older GCM data, so the migration needs an explicit compatibility decision rather than this unconditional assertion.

Correct the builder snapshot doc: nested auth values stay shared.
ClientBuilder.build passes options.copy() to the client. copyInto assigns authParams, authHeaders, defaultTokenParams, and proxy by reference. Changing those values after build reaches the built client, which contradicts the snapshot promise in the KDoc.

* #### TreeMap
public TreeMap()
Constructs a new, empty tree map, using the natural ordering of its keys. All keys inserted into the map must implement the `Comparable` interface. Furthermore, all such keys must be mutually comparable: `k1.compareTo(k2)` must not throw a `ClassCastException` for any keys `k1` and `k2` in the map. If the user attempts to put a key into the map that violates this constraint (for example, the user attempts to put a string key into a map whose keys are integers), the `put(Object key, Object value)` call will throw a `ClassCastException`.
* #### TreeMap
public TreeMap(Comparator<? super K> comparator)
Constructs a new, empty tree map, ordered according to the given comparator. All keys inserted into the map must be mutually comparable by the given comparator: `comparator.compare(k1, k2)` must not throw a `ClassCastException` for any keys `k1` and `k2` in the map. If the user attempts to put a key into the map that violates this constraint, the `put(Object key, Object value)` call will throw a `ClassCastException`.
Parameters:
`comparator` - the comparator that will be used to order this map. If `null`, the natural ordering of the keys will be used.
* #### TreeMap
public TreeMap(Map<? extends K,? extends V> m)
Constructs a new tree map containing the same mappings as the given map, ordered according to the natural ordering of its keys. All keys inserted into the new map must implement the `Comparable` interface. Furthermore, all such keys must be mutually comparable: `k1.compareTo(k2)` must not throw a `ClassCastException` for any keys `k1` and `k2` in the map. This method runs in n*log(n) time.
Parameters:
`m` - the map whose mappings are to be placed in this map
Throws:
`ClassCastException` - if the keys in m are not `Comparable`, or are not mutually comparable
`NullPointerException` - if the specified map is null
* #### TreeMap
public TreeMap(SortedMap<K,? extends V> m)
Constructs a new tree map containing the same mappings and using the same ordering as the specified sorted map. This method runs in linear time.
Parameters:
`m` - the sorted map whose mappings are to be placed in this map, and whose comparator is to be used to sort this map
Throws:
`NullPointerException` - if the specified map is null
* ### Method Detail

Returns `true` if this map maps one or more keys to the specified value. More formally, returns `true` if and only if this map contains at least one mapping to a value `v` such that `(value==null ? v==null : value.equals(v))`. This operation will probably require time linear in the map size for most implementations.
Specified by:
`get` in interface `Map<K,V>`
Overrides:

Parameters:
`key` - key for which mapping should be removed
Returns:
the previous value associated with `key`, or `null` if there was no mapping for `key`. (A `null` return can also indicate that the map previously associated `null` with `key`.)
Throws:
`ClassCastException` - if the specified key cannot be compared with the keys currently in the map
`NullPointerException` - if the specified key is null and this map uses natural ordering, or its comparator does not permit null keys
* #### clear

* #### keySet
public Set<K> keySet()
Returns a `Set` view of the keys contained in this map.
The set's iterator returns the keys in ascending order. The set's spliterator is late-binding, fail-fast, and additionally reports `Spliterator.SORTED` and `Spliterator.ORDERED` with an encounter order that is ascending key order. The spliterator's comparator (see `Spliterator.getComparator()`) is `null` if the tree map's comparator (see `comparator()`) is `null`. Otherwise, the spliterator's comparator is the same as or imposes the same total ordering as the tree map's comparator.
The set is backed by the map, so changes to the map are reflected in the set, and vice-versa. If the map is modified while an iteration over the set is in progress (except through the iterator's own `remove` operation), the results of the iteration are undefined. The set supports element removal, which removes the corresponding mapping from the map, via the `Iterator.remove`, `Set.remove`, `removeAll`, `retainAll`, and `clear` operations. It does not support the `add` or `addAll` operations.
Specified by:
`subMap` in interface `NavigableMap<K,V>`
Parameters:
`fromKey` - low endpoint of the keys in the returned map
`fromInclusive` - `true` if the low endpoint is to be included in the returned view
`toKey` - high endpoint of the keys in the returned map
`toInclusive` - `true` if the high endpoint is to be included in the returned view
Returns:
a view of the portion of this map whose keys range from `fromKey` to `toKey`
Throws:
`ClassCastException` - if `fromKey` and `toKey` cannot be compared to one another using this map's comparator (or, if the map has no comparator, using natural ordering). Implementations may, but are not required to, throw this exception if `fromKey` or `toKey` cannot be compared to keys currently in the map.
`NullPointerException` - if `fromKey` or `toKey` is null and this map uses natural ordering, or its comparator does not permit null keys
`IllegalArgumentException` - if `fromKey` is greater than `toKey`; or if this map itself has a restricted range, and `fromKey` or `toKey` lies outside the bounds of the range
Since:
1.6
* #### headMap
public NavigableMap<K,V> headMap(K toKey,
boolean inclusive)
Implementations may, but are not required to, throw this exception if `toKey` cannot be compared to keys currently in the map.
`NullPointerException` - if `toKey` is null and this map uses natural ordering, or its comparator does not permit null keys
`IllegalArgumentException` - if this map itself has a restricted range, and `toKey` lies outside the bounds of the range
Since:
1.6
* #### tailMap
public NavigableMap<K,V> tailMap(K fromKey,
boolean inclusive)
Description copied from interface: `NavigableMap`
Returns a view of the portion of this map whose keys are greater than (or equal to, if `inclusive` is true) `fromKey`. The returned map is backed by this map, so changes in the returned map are reflected in this map, and vice-versa. The returned map supports all optional map operations that this map supports.
The returned map will throw an `IllegalArgumentException` on an attempt to insert a key outside its range.
Specified by:
`tailMap` in interface `NavigableMap<K,V>`

`inclusive` - `true` if the low endpoint is to be included in the returned view
Returns:
a view of the portion of this map whose keys are greater than (or equal to, if `inclusive` is true) `fromKey`
Throws:
`ClassCastException` - if `fromKey` is not compatible with this map's comparator (or, if the map has no comparator, if `fromKey` does not implement `Comparable`). Implementations may, but are not required to, throw this exception if `fromKey` cannot be compared to keys currently in the map.
`NullPointerException` - if `fromKey` is null and this map uses natural ordering, or its comparator does not permit null keys
`IllegalArgumentException` - if this map itself has a restricted range, and `fromKey` lies outside the bounds of the range
Since:
1.6
* #### subMap
public SortedMap<K,V> subMap(K fromKey,
K toKey)
Description copied from interface: `NavigableMap`
Returns a view of the portion of this map whose keys range from `fromKey`, inclusive, to `toKey`, exclusive. (If `fromKey` and `toKey` are equal, the returned map is empty.) The returned map is backed by this map, so changes in the returned map are reflected in this map, and vice-versa. The returned map supports all optional map operations that this map supports.
The returned map will throw an `IllegalArgumentException` on an attempt to insert a key outside its range.
Equivalent to `subMap(fromKey, true, toKey, false)`.
Specified by:
`subMap` in interface `NavigableMap<K,V>`
Specified by:
`subMap` in interface `SortedMap<K,V>`

`toKey` - high endpoint (exclusive) of the keys in the returned map
Returns:
a view of the portion of this map whose keys range from `fromKey`, inclusive, to `toKey`, exclusive
Parameters:
`toKey` - high endpoint (exclusive) of the keys in the returned map
Returns:
a view of the portion of this map whose keys are strictly less than `toKey`
Throws:
`ClassCastException` - if `toKey` is not compatible with this map's comparator (or, if the map has no comparator, if `toKey` does not implement `Comparable`).
* #### tailMap
public SortedMap<K,V> tailMap(K fromKey)
Description copied from interface: `NavigableMap`
Returns a view of the portion of this map whose keys are greater than or equal to `fromKey`. The returned map is backed by this map, so changes in the returned map are reflected in this map, and vice-versa. The returned map supports all optional map operations that this map supports.

Handle null agent keys before sorting them.
getAdditionalAgentEntries copies the map into a TreeMap with natural ordering. A null key in a HashMap passed to create throws NullPointerException at the copy. The base code appended the null key as text and did not throw. Restore that behavior, for example by sorting entries with a null-safe comparator.

Update getAdditionalAgentEntries so sorting additionalAgents handles null keys
without throwing, while preserving the behavior of appending the null key as
text. Use a null-safe ordering for the entries before iterating.

The HttpCore dynamicAgents note pointed at createWrapperSdkProxy as if
the HTTP client had one; only the pubsub-adapter realtime client does.
The ClientOptions.endpoint Javadoc now warns against putting a port in
endpoint, matching the migration guide.
Reverts the rename to idempotentHttpPublishing. The option keeps the
specification's name (TO3n), and the ably-go rename it was matching is
being reverted. The door builders' setter, tests and the migration
guide and changelog entries go back with it; the guide now says the
name is kept deliberately.
Add a test that sets idempotentRestPublishing to false and checks that no message ID is generated.
The renamed test checks only the default value, true. No test in the repository sets the flag to false, so a regression that ignores the flag would not fail the suite. The current code does honor false, so this is a coverage gap, not a present defect.

Clarify that clientId("me") must match the token from authUrl.
The device builder sets the configured client ID without replacing it. If the token from authUrl carries a different client ID, the library rejects the mismatch. A reader who copies this example with an endpoint that issues tokens for other users gets an authentication failure. Either remove .clientId("me") so the token's client ID applies, or state that the endpoint must issue tokens for me.

Summary
This PR addresses the validated findings from the lead review of the 2.0 integration branch. The
-Duts.side=serverCI legs now run the:coreand:liveobjectsconformance specs through the server door builders, where before they ran only the:utssmoke tests. The migration guide is completed and brought to parity with ably-go's 2.0 guide. The door builders now snapshot their options and strip the opposite side's agent entry. The remaining should-fix items (tests, push-token persistence, stale docs and CI leftovers) are also fixed.Why
The parent PR is #1245 (
integration/v2intomain). A lead-dev review found four must-fix items (F1-F4) and a set of should-fix items and nits (F5-F31). It also found several review threads that are resolved on GitHub but not actually fixed. This PR fixes everything in this repo that was in scope. Out-of-repo and process items are listed under "Deferred / out of scope" below.Changes
