Generation OpenAPI: one operation for JSON + SSE, and every $ref resolves (#578) - #579
One operation for JSON + SSE. The {path}#stream twin is gone: application/json (or text/plain) and text/event-stream share one 200, as in OpenAI's own spec. Mistral's upstream #stream path keys merge into the base operation, so no path in any document contains #.
$refs resolve. After assembly, every request/response schema (and each FAL queue component) has its $defs hoisted into components.schemas, with $refs and discriminator.mapping values rewritten. Identical definitions share one name. A name already taken by different content gets a suffix hashed from that schema's $defs, so nothing is silently merged. $ref: '#' (a root self-reference) becomes its own component.
Bundler fix found on real data.bundleSchema replaced an inline schema's own $defs with the component closure, so Mistral's speech stream lost SpeechStreamEventTypes and published a dangling ref. It now keeps both, and warns if a local def and a component disagree. EXTRACTOR_VERSION is now 2, so the next Mistral sync writes new versions for the affected schemas.
Twin merge keeps both request bodies. Mistral's own spec has /v1/audio/transcriptions (stream: const false) and /v1/audio/transcriptions#stream (stream: const true). The twin is merged after hoisting, and the request becomes anyOf of both, so a client can actually ask for the SSE response the operation lists. Twins that list one media type with different schemas are refused (500 schema_conflict).
Fail loud on dangling refs. A document that would still hold an unresolved $ref is refused (500 unresolved_refs), naming the ref and its JSON pointer.
I ran the hoist over today's live documents (/v1/openapi/{openai,mistral,anthropic,gemini}):

* The bundler fix above removes it after the next Mistral sync. The live check caught a bug in my first version (on FunctionResponse): two schemas with the same $defs but different clash sets got the same renamed name with different content. The suffix now covers the renamed set too.
Deploy note
GET /v1/openapi/mistral returns 500 unresolved_refs after deploy until Mistral re-syncs (the stored speech stream schema still lacks SpeechStreamEventTypes; the bundle fix restores it). Run POST /v1/admin/sync/mistral right after deploying, or the daily spec sync fixes it. Rebuilding every served document from prod data with this branch: all other providers assemble with 0 unresolved refs and no # paths, and Mistral, with the def restored, assembles with transcriptions as anyOf [stream: false, stream: true] and JSON + SSE under 200.
provider-openapi.worker.test.ts: an assembled OpenAI document with JSON+SSE and conflicting $defs; every $ref resolves (unresolvedRefs in provider-openapi.ts walks each $ref as a JSON pointer from the document root); a Mistral #stream twin merges into the base path.
bundle.test.ts: an inline schema keeps its own $defs.
provider-openapi.worker.test.ts also covers the request-body union on a twin, the schema_conflict refusal and the unresolved_refs refusal.
bun run test: 243 files, 2365 tests pass. Typecheck and lint are clean.
Not in scope (listed in the issue): request content-type lists, OpenAI-style operationIds, query strings in path keys.
…mponents (#578)
- Drop the {path}#stream twin: JSON and text/event-stream share one 200,
as OpenAI's own spec does. Upstream #stream path keys (Mistral) merge
into the base operation.
- Hoist every schema's $defs into components.schemas and rewrite refs and
discriminator mappings, so every $ref resolves within the document.
Identical defs dedupe; a name defined differently gets a content-hash
suffix.
- bundleSchema kept only the component closure and dropped an inline
schema's own $defs (Mistral speech stream's SpeechStreamEventTypes).
Keep them; EXTRACTOR_VERSION 2.
- README + docs/api-changes.md note the hey-api break (hey-api/hey-api#4482).

Walkthrough
The OpenAPI generator now represents JSON and SSE responses on one operation. It hoists schema definitions into components.schemas and rewrites references. Schema bundling preserves existing inline definitions.
bundleSchema retains inline $defs while adding component schemas. The extractor version changes from 1 to 2.
Combine JSON and SSE responses src/server/provider-openapi.ts, src/server/provider-openapi.test.ts, src/server/provider-openapi.worker.test.ts
The generator emits one operation for JSON and SSE responses. Assembly strips # fragments from endpoint paths and merges 200 response media types for matching paths and methods.
Assembly moves schema definitions into components.schemas, rewrites references and discriminator mappings, and reports unresolved name conflicts. Tests check reference resolution and definition handling. The documentation describes the generated document and client behavior.

For Mistral transcription, the generated spec advertises a streaming response that a validating client cannot request under the published request schema. Fix the request-schema merge before merging, or explicitly accept this limitation. The rest of the OpenAPI changes, including the hoisting, reference rewriting and path merging, show no established problems.

Explanation
The title names the two main changes: one combined operation for JSON and SSE responses, and resolution of every $ref. The changeset covers both. The title also gives the PR number, #578, which matches the linked issue. Changes to bundleSchema, EXTRACTOR_VERSION, and the README are not named, but the title does not need to list every detail.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #578 is the only active direct link. Its coding requirements are met on the reviewed head, with two items verified by code and the rest supported by the PR summary.
Combined JSON and SSE operation [#578]: Verified in src/server/provider-openapi.ts. buildOperation emits one POST per endpoint. responseMedia maps application/json (or text/plain) to the stored output schema and text/event-stream to streamSchema under the same 200. The #stream twin and the body/stream split are removed per the summary. Sibling-GET responses use contentTypesFor(endpoint, 'body') and drop the stream type.
No '#' in path keys [#578]: Supported by the summary. Mistral's '#stream' upstream keys merge into the base path during assembly, and worker tests cover this (verified test name only, not the body).
Every $ref resolves [#578]: src/server/fixtures/unresolved-refs.ts exists at head. It resolves '#/' pointers from the document root, decodes ~1 and ~0, and reports misses. provider-openapi.worker.test.ts imports it. hoistSchemaDefs (components.schemas, $ref and discriminator rewrite, identical-definition dedupe, content-hash suffix on clash, root self-reference) is described in the summary and tests; its body lies past the read truncation and was not independently verified.
Clash handling [#578]: The issue allows refusing or naming by content. The PR suffixes clashing names with a hash and has a rename-on-clash test per the summary.
Bundler fix [#578 acceptance, supporting]: bundle.ts retains inline $defs. bundle.test.ts covers it per the summary.
Residual caveat: The live-check table reports one unresolved Mistral ref (407 before, 1 after) until the next Mistral sync rewrites stored schemas under EXTRACTOR_VERSION 2. This is a stored-data state, not a missing code path. The bundler fix that removes it is present in code and covered by bundle.test.ts.
unresolved-refs.ts fixture: test support for the $ref acceptance criterion.
bundle.ts and bundle.test.ts: the inline $defs fix. It removes the dangling Mistral speech-stream ref, which blocks the every-$ref-resolves requirement.
EXTRACTOR_VERSION '1' to '2' (bundle.ts, asyncapi.test.ts): forces the next sync to rewrite affected schemas after the bundler fix. This is directly tied to the fix.
README and docs/api-changes.md: the issue requires the README break note. The api-changes doc records the same break.
provider-openapi.worker.test.ts and provider-openapi.test.ts: updated for the combined shape as the issue requires.
The PR description lists request content-type lists, OpenAI-style operationIds, and query strings in path keys as not in scope. The summary shows no change to those areas.

…conflicts (#578)
- An upstream #stream twin (Mistral transcriptions) is merged after its
schemas are hoisted, and its request body joins the base as anyOf, so
stream: true is accepted next to the SSE response it advertises.
- Twins that list one media type with different schemas: 500
schema_conflict instead of keeping the base silently.
- A document with a $ref that does not resolve: 500 unresolved_refs,
naming the ref and its JSON pointer, instead of publishing it.
- unresolvedRefs moves into provider-openapi.ts (now used at runtime).
