[Submit API] Caption-Pack API #68

Description

@jeshuadomingo-byte

Name: Caption-Pack API

One-liner: Social captions as an API — 25 free calls, no card required.

Description:
POST a topic, audience, and tone; get social captions + hashtags back as JSON. Built for developers and AI agents who need caption generation inside a workflow instead of another chat window. Deterministic template-and-variant engine — no LLM in the loop, so output never drifts between calls. Free tier: 25 calls, no credit card, 7-day keys; plus a keyless playground (5 calls/hour) to poke at it. Paid tier is 2¢/call via Stripe prepaid credits.

API details for the maintainers (their template fields, answered factually):

  • Authentication: free API key required (25-call trial keys, no card; keyless playground at 5 calls/hour)
  • Free tier rate limit: 10 requests/minute on free keys
  • CORS support: unknown
  • The free tier is a permanent offering (trial keys expire after 7 days but the free tier itself is ongoing)

    Hi @jeshuadomingo-byte! 👋

Thank you so much for submitting Caption-Pack API to DevShelf! We really appreciate you sharing your project and taking the time to detail the specs factually.

After reviewing the submission and the OpenAPI specification (/openapi.yaml), we noticed that the free API keys operate on a 7-day expiration with a 25-call lifetime trial balance that cannot be replenished once exhausted:

"Free keys (cp_free_...): minted at GET /v1/free-trial, 25 credits... expire after 7 days, can never be topped up or converted to paid."

Per DevShelf's Inclusion Criteria & Quality Guidelines:

    • Listings on DevShelf are strictly reserved for 100% open-source software (FOSS) or tools with a genuine, non-expiring / recurring permanent free tier (such as a monthly free allowance that resets each month).
    • One-off trial periods and time-limited trial credits do not meet our permanent zero-paywall criteria.

Because of this, we cannot list Caption-Pack API on DevShelf at this time.

However, if you ever decide to introduce an ongoing permanent free tier (for instance, a recurring monthly allowance of free credits or a permanent keyless rate limit), please feel free to reopen this issue or submit a new PR — we'd be more than happy to re-evaluate and feature it!

Thanks again for building and sharing with the developer community, and best of luck with Caption-Pack API! 🚀

Hi, thanks for the careful review — fair call on the trial keys.

One thing worth flagging: alongside the trial keys there's a permanent keyless playground — POST /v1/playground, 5 calls/hour per IP, no key, no card, no account, no expiry. It's been there since launch and isn't going anywhere; up to ~3,600 calls/month per IP for anyone evaluating the API.

Does that meet the permanent-free-tier bar? Happy to be re-evaluated on that basis either way.

    Hi @jeshuadomingo-byte,
Thanks for clarifying! A permanent, unauthenticated endpoint at 5 calls/hour per IP (~3,600 calls/month) with no card or sign-up required does qualify under our keyless public utilities!
We will list Caption-Pack API on DevShelf with the following specifications:

    • Authentication: No Key (Playground)
    • Rate Limit: 5 req/hour per IP
    • Tags: No Card Required, Rate-Limited
We will open a PR to merge this into shelf/apis.json. Thank you for building in public and contributing to DevShelf! 🚀
