Description

The converted examples install a locally built isaaccapture with uv pip install "isaaccapture[cloudxr]" --find-links=./install/wheels/. That command is unpinned, has no --reinstall-package, and no step before it activates a venv. CodeRabbit raised it on #1372, and the same text was in every converted example and one docs-site page:

  • A local build is always X.Y+local, so after a rebuild uv keeps the old wheel.
  • install/wheels/ keeps old builds, so an unpinned resolve can pick a stale or higher-versioned one.
  • uv pip install finds an inactive repo-root .venv, but python does not.

Step 4 of Build from source already has the right commands. This PR makes the examples use them:

  • examples/README.md, "Running an example" now states the rule once. Set up the venv exactly as in step 4: on the build's Python, activated in every terminal, with isaaccapture pinned to X.Y+local and --reinstall-package isaaccapture, and rerun that install after every rebuild. For an example whose pyproject.toml points [tool.uv.sources] at the checkout, it links to step 4 instead of restating the rebuild rule. It names camera_viz and vehicle_teleop as the exceptions: their wrapper scripts call .venv/bin/python inside the example directory.
  • These example READMEs link to it: cloudxr_mujoco_teleop, deviceio_live_view, haptic_feedback, mcap_record_replay, retargeting, robot_viz (the README and the pyproject.toml comment), sharpa_avatar, soma_body_publisher, soma_hand_publisher, tactile and teleop_session_manager.
  • noitom and oglo_tactile keep their build blocks, now with the exact step 4 commands: uv venv … --seed .venv, source .venv/bin/activate and uv pip install "isaaccapture[cloudxr]==X.Y+local" --find-links=./install/wheels/ --reinstall-package isaaccapture. noitom keeps the 3.12 note and its Isaac Lab ==X.Y+local pin, and gains an after-a-rebuild Isaac Lab command with --force-reinstall --no-deps: pip treats an installed X.Y+local as satisfied, and --no-deps leaves Isaac Lab's other packages alone. oglo_tactile now activates the venv in each demo terminal. Both inline uv venv lines say to skip them when .venv already runs that Python, and that --clear switches it and deletes its packages. noitom's Isaac Lab rebuild command now follows the launch block.
  • Docs-site pages that install an example point at step 4 through a new label, build-from-source-install-package: references/haptic_feedback, references/mcap_record_replay, device/trackers/vive_ultimate_tracker, device/body_tracking/soma, device/hand_tracking/sharpa_avatar, references/retargeting/sharpa and references/retargeting/wuji. The existing install-isaaccapture-pip-package label belongs to Quick Start. The old step 4 anchor still resolves.
  • references/build.rst: the pip form gains --force-reinstall, as in step 4.
  • Plugin READMEs that install an example (noitom_mocap, vive_se3_tracker) link to the rule.
  • mcap_record_replay (README and docs page) drops the note that offered uv run --python 3.11 in place of the activated venv. No lockfile is tracked, and on a build for another Python it recreates the repo-root .venv. The docs page links to step 4 for C++ rebuilds.
  • robot_viz (README and pyproject.toml comment) no longer says an unpinned isaaccapture fails to resolve. The package index serves a release that is not the local build, so the README now says to install from a path or with both --find-links and the ==X.Y+local pin.
  • Retargeting demos: the Sharpa and Wuji run sections say to add grounding or wuji to the extras step 4 installs, and the examples/retargeting README table names isaaccapture[grounding] and isaaccapture[wuji]. Both demos import their retargeter at startup, and step 4's extras include neither pink nor wuji_sdk.
  • Step 4 says to reuse an existing .venv on the build's Python and to rerun uv venv with --clear only to switch Python. uv refuses to recreate an existing venv without --clear, so rerunning the step 4, noitom or oglo_tactile line failed.
  • Step 4 also holds the one statement about editable examples (new label build-from-source-editable-examples). An example whose [tool.uv.sources] points at the checkout replaces the wheel with an editable build, uv reuses that build, and a C++ change needs uv pip install -e ./examples/<name> --reinstall-package isaaccapture.
  • camera_viz:
    • _install_deps.sh now passes the wheel's directory as --find-links. The isaaccapture wheel depends on isaacteleop>=1!1.6.dev0, which only the build's wheel directory provides (the index stops at 1.5), so camera_viz.sh setup --wheel could not install any local build.
    • In references/camera_streaming, the --wheel example named a glob, which expands to every wheel in the directory, and setup rejects a second path. It also relied on setup's default Python 3.12 while a default build is cp311. It now names one install/wheels wheel with --python 3.11, and the flag table lists --python.
  • oxr and vehicle_teleop (converted in examples(oxr): package under isaaccapture_examples #1372 and examples(vehicle_teleop): package under isaaccapture_examples #1375, merged in here) get the same skip-uv venv note on their inline uv venv lines.
  • soma drops the .venv/bin/cmake block. A step 4 venv has no CMake, the step 2 build already stages isaacteleop_python, and the editable soma examples never read build/.

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)
  • Documentation update

Testing

  • One README end to end. I followed examples/haptic_feedback/README.md in a clean shell (env -i, nothing active) against a local build (isaaccapture-1.7+local-cp311). The commands were uv venv --python 3.11 --seed .venv, source .venv/bin/activate, uv pip install "isaaccapture[cloudxr]==1.7+local" --find-links=./install/wheels/ --reinstall-package isaaccapture, uv pip install -e ./examples/haptic_feedback, then python -m isaaccapture_examples.haptic_feedback.controller_haptic_example --help. The pinch demo got as far as opening the OpenXR session, which needs a running CloudXR runtime.
  • A rebuild replaces the wheel. I appended a marker line to src/python/isaaccapture/__init__.py and ran cmake --build build && cmake --install build. The rebuilt wheel was still 1.7+local and contained the marker.
    • The old README command, uv pip install "isaaccapture[cloudxr]" --find-links=./install/wheels/, printed Checked 1 package and left the old file installed.
    • The step 4 command printed ~ isaaccapture==1.7+local, and the marker was installed.
    • I then reverted the marker and rebuilt.
  • Inactive venv. With no venv active, uv pip reported environment at: .venv while python was not found. The "activate it in every terminal" line covers this case.
  • [tool.uv.sources] note. With the step 4 wheel installed, uv pip install -e ./examples/tactile --dry-run plans - isaaccapture==1.7+local and + isaaccapture @ file://<checkout>.
  • Extras. After installing isaaccapture==1.7+local with no extras, uv pip install -e ./examples/haptic_feedback --dry-run keeps the local wheel and adds the cloudxr extra's dependencies.
  • Editable examples after a rebuild. In a throwaway project with a [tool.uv.sources] path dependency (not the real package), I changed the dependency and reinstalled. A plain uv pip install -e kept the old build, and adding --reinstall-package <dep> rebuilt it. uv 0.12.5's help says --reinstall-package implies --refresh-package.
  • uv run --python 3.11. In a throwaway project with a 3.12 .venv, uv 0.12.5 printed Removed virtual environment at: .venv and recreated it on 3.11. No uv.lock is tracked, and .gitignore ignores it.
  • Unpinned resolve. In an empty 3.11 venv, uv pip install --dry-run isaaccapture plans isaaccapture==0.0.0a0, PyPI's placeholder.
  • Demo extras. uv pip compile of step 4's extras plus the retargeting example's dependencies, on 3.11 and 3.12, includes none of pin-pink, viser, loop-rate-limiters or wuji-sdk, and adding grounding or wuji resolves on both. Without grounding, importing SharpaHandRetargeter fails with No module named 'pink'.
  • Existing venv. With uv 0.12.5, a second uv venv --python 3.11 .venv on an existing 3.11 .venv exits 2 with A virtual environment already exists, and --clear recreates it.
  • Docs build. make -C docs current-docs passes with -W, rerun after each commit. The built build_from_source/index.html has both #install-the-isaaccapture-pip-package and #build-from-source-install-package, and every new :ref: resolves to the latter. The built mcap_record_replay.html has the reinstall line and no lockfile note, the sharpa and wuji pages have the extras line, and the soma page has no bin/cmake.
  • Pre-commit. SKIP=check-copyright-year pre-commit run --all-files passes after git add -A, rerun after each commit.
  • Docs-site pages. I grepped docs/source/ for find-links, isaaccapture[, --reinstall-package, uv pip install -e ./examples and isaaccapture_examples.
    • Changed and read in the PR preview, built from 496bd07; each has its step 4 link: references/haptic_feedback, references/build, device/trackers/vive_ultimate_tracker, device/body_tracking/soma, device/hand_tracking/sharpa_avatar, references/retargeting/sharpa and references/retargeting/wuji.
    • Changed again in 29cc5fa, checked in the local build, preview not yet rebuilt: development/build_from_source (the #build-from-source-editable-examples anchor exists), references/mcap_record_replay (links to it) and references/camera_streaming.
    • Also grepped for uv venv, --wheel, camera_viz.sh setup and [tool.uv.sources].
    • Read and left alone: teleop/quick_start (PyPI install), development/migration, device/hand_tracking/manus (module pointer, no install command), references/cloudxr and integrations/lerobot/data_collection_real (they link to Quick Start's label). Also the pip install "isaaccapture[...]" lines in retargeting/sharpa and retargeting/wuji, which install the published package.
  • camera_viz --wheel.
    • Before the fix, uv pip install "<install/wheels cp311 wheel>[cloudxr]" with no --find-links, as setup ran it, failed: only isaacteleop<=1.5.175 is available.
    • With the fix, the command the script now builds (--upgrade --find-links install/wheels <wheel>[cloudxr] …) installs isaaccapture==1.7+local and isaacteleop==1!1.7+local into a 3.11 venv, and both import.
    • bash -n passes. I did not run the full setup, which probes CUDA and apt.
  • No tests added. The docs changes are covered by the checks above. The camera_viz change is one line in a setup script with no test harness, so I exercised the command it builds instead.

Not covered yet:

  • No headset or CloudXR run.
  • The noitom Isaac Lab rebuild command was not run against Isaac Lab.
  • --reinstall-package isaaccapture on a real editable example was not run; only the throwaway project checked it.
  • A full camera_viz.sh setup --python 3.11 --wheel … run, including apt probing, the CUDA check and the codec build.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated build and example instructions to use a consistent repository-root virtual environment setup.
    • Clarified how to install Isaac Capture and examples, including source-build requirements and package reinstall steps.
    • Revised setup guidance across device, tracking, retargeting, recording, replay, and visualization examples.
    • Added details for Python version selection and CloudXR environment setup in specific examples.
    • Improved links between the build guide and related instructions.

The converted examples installed the local build with an unpinned
--find-links command and no --reinstall-package, and none said to
activate a venv. A local build is always X.Y+local, so uv kept the old
wheel after a rebuild, and an unpinned resolve could pick another wheel
from install/wheels.

examples/README.md now states the rule once and points at step 4 of
Build from source. Each example README, its docs-site page and the
plugin READMEs that install an example link to it; noitom and
oglo_tactile inline the step 4 command with the cloudxr extra. The pip
form in references/build.rst gains --force-reinstall to match step 4.

The PR updates source-build and example setup instructions to use repository-root virtual environments and shared installation guidance. It adds local version-pin and reinstall details, editable-build notes, and specific setup commands for Noitom, OGLO tactile, and robot-viz. Device, reference, and plugin documentation now points to the corresponding setup instructions. The source-build guide also gains a package-installation anchor, and the build reference adds --force-reinstall.

This documentation update can leave readers with a venv that is missing optional dependencies for the Sharpa and Wuji demos. It also points the Noitom and OGLO examples at one shared venv path, and the SOMA build commands may not find CMake. No runtime code changes. Fix these instructions before merging for a smoother setup, but there is no production risk.

Examples that point [tool.uv.sources] at the checkout keep uv's cached
editable build, so a C++ rebuild never reached them. examples/README.md
and the mcap_record_replay page now say to reinstall such an example
with --reinstall-package isaaccapture, and the README says to rerun the
step 4 install after each rebuild.

noitom's Isaac Lab install gains a rebuild command: pip treats an
installed X.Y+local as satisfied, so it needs --force-reinstall, and
--no-deps keeps Isaac Lab's other packages in place.

Drop the mcap_record_replay note that offered `uv run --python 3.11`
instead of the activated venv. No lockfile is tracked, and on a build
for another Python it recreates the repo-root .venv.

robot_viz no longer claims an unpinned isaaccapture fails to resolve;
the package index serves a release that is not the local build.

The Sharpa and Wuji demos import their retargeters at startup, and step
4's extras include neither pink nor wuji_sdk, so both failed in the
step 4 venv. Their run sections now say to add grounding or wuji to the
extras step 4 installs, and the retargeting README table names them.

uv refuses to recreate an existing venv without --clear, even on the
same Python, so rerunning the step 4, noitom or oglo_tactile lines
failed. Step 4 now says to reuse a .venv on the build's Python and to
pass --clear only to switch Python.

soma's build block ran .venv/bin/cmake, which a step 4 venv lacks, to
stage isaacteleop_python into build/. The step 2 build already does
that, and the editable soma examples never read build/, so drop it.

On the outside-diff comment for docs/source/device/body_tracking/soma.rst:99-100 (.venv/bin/cmake): fixed in 496bd07 by removing the block rather than switching to cmake. A step 4 venv has no CMake, and the block did nothing for this flow. isaacteleop_python only stages the pure-Python sources into build/, which the step 2 build already does, and the three soma examples install isaaccapture editably under build-wheel/ and never read build/.

The isaaccapture wheel depends on isaacteleop>=1!1.6.dev0, which only
the build's own wheel directory provides; the index serves isaacteleop
up to 1.5. setup installed the wheel by path with no --find-links, so
`camera_viz.sh setup --wheel` could not resolve any local build. Pass
the wheel's directory as --find-links.

uv refuses to recreate an existing .venv without --clear, even on the
same Python, so the inline uv venv lines in noitom and oglo_tactile
now say to skip them on a matching venv and that --clear deletes its
packages.

Step 4 of Build from source now holds the one statement about examples
whose [tool.uv.sources] point at the checkout: they replace the wheel
with an editable build, and a C++ change needs --reinstall-package
isaaccapture. examples/README.md and the mcap_record_replay page link
to it instead of restating it, and the README names camera_viz and
vehicle_teleop as the examples that keep their own .venv.

camera_streaming's --wheel example named a glob, which expands to every
wheel in the directory, and relied on setup's default Python 3.12 while
a default build is cp311. It now names one install/wheels wheel with
--python 3.11, and the flag table lists --python.

noitom's Isaac Lab rebuild command moves after the launch block.

Both READMEs gained an inline `uv venv` line in #1372 and #1375. uv refuses
an existing .venv without --clear, so say to skip the line when .venv already
runs that Python, as noitom and oglo_tactile do.
