ci: fail instrumented-tests when the managed device runs fewer tests than the test APK holds - #253
Conversation
…than expected AGP's android-test-engine fails only tests that started. When the app process crashes before the first test, the managed-device task writes a report with tests="0" failures="0" and passes, and neither AGP nor Gradle offers a fail-on-zero-tests option. A new step after the GMD run sums the <testsuites tests> counts of the managed-device TEST-*.xml reports and fails when that sum is 0, below the module's @test count, or when no report exists. The gmd-diagnostics upload already includes those reports. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_017o3oP5jLEZpoVaRyWHYXbw

The expected count matched every @test preceded by whitespace, including commented-out annotations and KDoc mentions. Those raise the count without adding a runnable test, so a complete managed-device run fails the check. The count also missed @test after a semicolon or parenthesis. Perl now reads each androidTest source file whole and removes string literals, block comments and line comments. It then counts @test and @org.junit.Test tokens anywhere in the remaining code. Removing strings first keeps a literal such as "image/*" from opening a block comment. Kotlin block comments nest, but the lazy /\*.*?\*/ pattern ends a comment at the first */. In /* /** doc */ @test fun x() */ the @test survives, raises the expected count and fails a complete managed-device run. The block-comment alternative is now the recursive group (/\*(?:(?1)|.)*?\*/), so an inner comment closes before the outer one. It stays capture group 1 so (?1) recurses into it; the string alternative stays non-capturing. Kotlin raw strings and Java text blocks span lines, but the string alternative only matches a "..." literal within one line. The content of a """ literal therefore stays in the scanned code. An @test inside it raises the expected count and fails a complete managed-device run. A */* inside it opens a fake block comment that hides real @test annotations. A """ alternative now runs before the ordinary string alternative, so """ is never read as "" plus ". The literal ends at the first run of three or more quotes and takes the whole run, as Kotlin does. A backslash stays plain text because Kotlin raw strings have no escapes. The block-comment group stays capture group 1, so (?1) still recurses into it. The old count regex-parsed src/androidTest. That needs a Kotlin/Java lexer for comments and string literals, and still misses import aliases and other source dirs. The compiled test APK holds exactly the test methods the runner can execute. The step now counts the method annotations `VISIBILITY_RUNTIME Lorg/junit/Test;` in `dexdump -a` output, using the newest dexdump in $ANDROID_HOME/build-tools. It unzips classes*.dex first because Windows builds of dexdump cannot open an APK. A dex file with @org.junit.Test methods holds Lorg/junit/Test; in its own string table. A grep -F on the raw dex drops all other files before dexdump parses them. On common-utils' test APK, this cuts dexdump from about 29 s to 6 s with unchanged counts. An expected count of 0 silently disables the N < M check. A dexdump output change or a move off JUnit4 yields 0, so the step fails when the APK holds no org.junit.Test method. The report check also sums failures and errors from <testsuites>. Android test engine 1.0.5 records a crash before the first test as one synthetic failed test. AGP can keep the managed-device task green, so a tests="1" failures="1" report can pass the count check. These report checks run before the APK extraction, so a missing APK or a dexdump error cannot hide them.
