Part of #1422 (item 1). Item 2 is a finding only, posted on the issue.

Problem: the AWS legacy-to-canonical service pairs live in two tables. config.awsLegacyServiceSlugs serves purchase suppressions and mapServiceSlug in internal/purchase/execution.go serves purchase dispatch. Since #1421 only comments link the two. An alias added to one and not the other would bring back the suppression double-buy from #1420.

Change:

  • awsLegacyServiceSlugs is written with the cloud-commitments-go common.Service* constants (e.g. string(common.ServiceEC2) → string(common.ServiceCompute)). The values are identical to the old literals.
  • The legacy AWS entries of mapServiceSlug move into a package-level legacyAWSServiceSlugs var. Lookup behaviour is unchanged.
  • The new test TestLegacyAWSSlugsMatchSuppressionAliases ranges over legacyAWSServiceSlugs. Every legacy key must map through config.CanonicalSuppressionService to a different canonical slug that mapServiceSlug accepts and resolves to the expected service family. memorydb is the documented exception and must pass through unchanged.

Tests: adding a fake legacy alias only to legacyAWSServiceSlugs fails the new test.

Local: go build ./... passes, go test -race passes on config, purchase and scheduler, and pre-commit passes.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • AWS service names continue to resolve consistently across legacy and canonical naming formats. Existing legacy aliases retain their established service associations, and supported service mappings remain unchanged.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage verifying that legacy AWS aliases are accepted and map to their expected service families, including the special handling of the memorydb slug.

…nstants

awsLegacyServiceSlugs spelled its keys and values as string literals that
only pointed at mapServiceSlug in comments, so an alias added to one table
and not the other would reintroduce the suppression double-buy from #1420.
Write both sides as string(common.Service*) constants, hoist the legacy
entries of mapServiceSlug into a package-level map (behaviour unchanged),
and add a drift test that ranges over it and checks each key maps through
config.CanonicalSuppressionService to a canonical slug mapServiceSlug
accepts and resolves to the expected family (memorydb passes through).

Savings Plans spelling aliases (item 2) are left open: the in-repo producers
only emit the hyphenated per-type slugs, so reach is low.

Walkthrough

The AWS legacy service slug map now uses shared service constants. Purchase slug resolution checks canonical slugs and then AWS legacy aliases. A new test checks the mappings and the MemoryDB exception.

Changes: AWS slug alias consistency

Explanation

The title "chore(config): tie suppression slug aliases to the library service constants" matches the main change. The PR replaces string literals in the suppression alias table with cloud-commitments-go common.Service* constants, moves legacy AWS entries into a package-level legacyAWSServiceSlugs variable, and adds a drift test. The title is specific, concise, and names the primary change. It does not cover the new drift test or the mapServiceSlug refactor, which is expected for a title.

Independent review 1 (cold, fresh context):

VERDICT: APPROVE 5ef1c42
Findings:

  • nit internal/purchase/slug_alias_drift_test.go:23 - test ranges only over purchase's legacyAWSServiceSlugs, so an alias added only to config.awsLegacyServiceSlugs (types.go:769) survives (probe M2). Failure scenario: config folds "es"->"search" while purchase rejects "es"; mapServiceSlug fails loudly on such a rec, so this is not the silent fix(config): canonicalise every AWS service alias in purchase suppressions, not only ec2/compute #1420 double-buy. Non-blocking; a reverse loop would need an exported accessor in config, which is not worth adding.
  • nit internal/purchase/slug_alias_drift_test.go:16-22 - canonicalFamily is a third copy of the pairs. It is what kills probe M1 (purchase-only alias) through the require at :32. Wrong family (M4) is also killed by config's TestCanonicalSuppressionService. A leaner version would assert string(got)==canonical and drop the map, but then M1 would only be caught by the NotEqual check at :33. That check fails just as well, so the map buys little beyond a clearer message. Keep or drop, either is fine.
  • info (pre-existing, not from this PR) internal/purchase/execution.go:1313-1320 - dropping "rds" or "memorydb" from the legacy map survives the purchase and config suites (M8, M9). mapServiceType's passthrough returns the same ServiceType anyway, so the only observable change is the ok flag at manager.go:587.
    Attacked:
  • Constant values: the pinned pkg@v0.0.0-20261020053130-ff6225d5ff04 common/types.go defines compute/relational-db/cache/search/data-warehouse at :84-97 and ec2/rds/elasticache/opensearch/redshift/memorydb at :136-145. They are byte-identical to the old literals.
  • Lookup precedence: the canonical map (execution.go:1295-1301) and the legacy map are disjoint, so the order of lookups cannot change any result. memorydb resolves to ServiceMemoryDB as before. "" and unknown slugs miss both maps (false), which is unchanged; TestMapServiceType_AllBranches passes.
  • Callers: only manager.go:587 and execution.go:1253 call mapServiceSlug, and only the test references the new var. There is no import cycle: purchase already imports config in non-test files, and config does not import purchase. The common import into config is new and builds fine.
  • gocyclo -over 10 on execution.go and types.go: no output. go vet is clean.
  • Scratch build of git archive HEAD: go build ./... passes. go test -race -count=1 config/purchase/scheduler: 2068 passed. git merge-tree --write-tree origin/main HEAD is clean (db729e57).
  • Mutation probes (purchase+config suites; files restored by cp, cmp byte-identical):
    M1 purchase-only alias es KILLED; M2 config-only alias SURVIVED; M3 config canonical "relational_db" KILLED;
    M4 config rds->cache KILLED; M5 config drop rds KILLED; M6 config add memorydb KILLED;
    M7 purchase rds->ServiceRedshift KILLED (redrive tests); M8 drop memorydb SURVIVED; M9 drop rds SURVIVED;
    M10 canonical map drops "search" KILLED.
  • Security and completeness: no input-surface change. Item 2 of chore(config): tie suppression slug aliases to the library constants and cover Savings Plans spellings #1422 is a finding only and was posted on the issue. The PR body says "Part of", which matches.

Independent review 2 (claude-fleet, cold): APPROVE 5ef1c42

Blocking findings: none.

Non-blocking findings:

  1. internal/purchase/slug_alias_drift_test.go:23 ranges only over legacyAWSServiceSlugs, so the check runs in one direction. A legacy alias added only to config.awsLegacyServiceSlugs (types.go:768) passes every test (probe P5). The risk is low because purchase would reject that slug anyway. The PR body describes only this one direction, so the claim is accurate. A config-side export or a test helper in config could close the gap if wanted.
  2. slug_alias_drift_test.go:16-22 adds canonicalFamily, a third hand-kept copy of the five pairs. It cannot be avoided: mapServiceSlug maps legacy slugs to the legacy constants (execution.go:1313-1320), so it carries no legacy-to-canonical relation to compare against. The test still encodes the right invariant: config's canonical value must be a slug that mapServiceSlug accepts, and it must resolve to the expected canonical constant (lines 33-35). It does not compare the wrong relation and does not pass vacuously.
  3. Lint: golangci-lint reports one prealloc issue in internal/config/store_postgres_history_page_integration_test.go:134. That file is untouched and the issue is already on base (feat(api): page the History view with a keyset cursor (has_more, next_cursor) #1277), so it is not caused by this PR.

Old/new table (pinned constants at pkg@v0.0.0-20261020053130-ff6225d5ff04, common/types.go):
ec2 -> compute: ServiceEC2="ec2" (:136) -> ServiceCompute="compute" (:84). Identical.
rds -> relational-db: ServiceRDS="rds" (:137) -> ServiceRelationalDB="relational-db" (:87). Identical.
elasticache -> cache: ServiceElastiCache="elasticache" (:138) -> ServiceCache="cache" (:91). Identical.
opensearch -> search: ServiceOpenSearch="opensearch" (:139) -> ServiceSearch="search" (:94). Identical.
redshift -> data-warehouse: ServiceRedshift="redshift" (:144) -> ServiceDataWarehouse="data-warehouse" (:97). Identical.
memorydb is still absent from config (types.go:768-774) and still present in legacyAWSServiceSlugs (execution.go:1319). Nothing was added or removed.
go.work only uses . and ./tests/e2e, so the pinned module is the one resolved.

Behaviour: mapServiceSlug (execution.go:1293-1307) now checks the canonical map first and falls back to the legacy map. The two key sets are disjoint, the entries are the same six, and a miss returns the same ("", false). There is no behaviour change. The only other changes are comments (types.go:764-767, execution.go:1310-1312).

Drift test analysis: there is no import cycle. purchase already imports config in production code (account_scope.go:7), config's deps contain no purchase package, and the test is in package purchase, so it can reach the unexported legacyAWSServiceSlugs. It covers AWS only: it calls CanonicalSuppressionService("aws", key) at line 25. memorydb must pass through unchanged (line 28).

Probes on the head export, each restored with cp and checked with cmp (ALL_RESTORED):
P1, a legacy pair added to mapServiceSlug only (dynamodb): drift test FAILS.
P2, redshift dropped from config only: drift test, TestCanonicalSuppressionService and TestApplySuppressions_AWSLegacySlugSpellings all FAIL.
P3, redshift mapped to search in config: drift test FAILS (wrong family), and so do the config/scheduler tests.
P4, ServiceEC2 swapped for ServiceCompute as the key: drift test and 4 config/scheduler tests FAIL.
P5, an alias added to config only: everything PASSES (gap, see finding 1).
P6, legacy ec2 value changed to ServiceCompute in purchase: the drift test misses it, but 12+ purchase tests FAIL.
P7, memorydb added to config: drift test and the config/scheduler tests FAIL.

Fail-before: the test as written does not compile on base (undefined legacyAWSServiceSlugs). I adapted it to range over a literal list of the six keys, and it passes on base, which is consistent with the old literals. The adapted file was removed afterwards.

Commands (GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.10, AWS creds pointed at /dev/null):

  • go build ./... OK
  • go vet ./internal/config ./internal/purchase OK
  • gofmt -l on the 3 files: clean
  • go test -count=1 ./internal/config ./internal/purchase ./internal/scheduler: all ok
  • go test -v -run TestLegacyAWSSlugsMatchSuppressionAliases: 6 subtests pass
  • golangci-lint on config and purchase: only the existing issue from finding 3
  • No integration-tagged files are touched, so integration tests were skipped.
  • The local diff of base..head is byte-identical to pr1425.diff.
  • origin/main equals the base (b9b0daf). git merge-tree --write-tree onto it is clean (tree db729e5).
  • No migrations.

The drift test ranged only over legacyAWSServiceSlugs, so deleting an
entry such as rds or memorydb from that map passed silently. Assert the
expected legacy keys are present before the loop.

Independent review 1, delta (same cold reviewer):

VERDICT: APPROVE 0bdd100
Delta 5ef1c42..0bdd100 is one commit and touches only internal/purchase/slug_alias_drift_test.go (+5 lines, :23-27). Non-test code is unchanged.
Findings: none actionable.

  • nit slug_alias_drift_test.go:27 - memorydb gets a separate require because canonicalFamily leaves it out. That is correct, but the list of expected keys now lives in two places.
  • The M2 survivor from the first pass (an alias added only in config) is unchanged and still non-blocking.
    Attacked:
  • require.Contains on a map checks keys (testify), so each expected key is enforced. The require calls run before the subtests, so a missing key fails the parent test with a message naming the key.
  • In a scratch archive of 0bdd100: go build ./... passes, and go test -race -count=1 passes on purchase and config.
  • git merge-tree --write-tree origin/main 0bdd100 is clean (5bddbbc6).
  • Probes (files restored with cp, confirmed with cmp): M8 (drop memorydb from purchase) is now KILLED, and M9 (drop rds from purchase) is now KILLED, both by TestLegacyAWSSlugsMatchSuppressionAliases.

Independent review 2 (claude-fleet, cold): APPROVE at 0bdd100

This is a delta re-review after my APPROVE at 5ef1c42. The delta is one commit, and it touches only internal/purchase/slug_alias_drift_test.go (+5/-0). Production code is unchanged.

What changed: the new lines at slug_alias_drift_test.go:23-27 require legacyAWSServiceSlugs to keep every canonicalFamily key, plus memorydb. Dropping a key from the legacy map now fails the test.

Probes (fresh export, each restored with cp and checked with cmp)

  • redshift dropped from legacyAWSServiceSlugs only: FAILS at :25 (legacy slug "redshift" was removed from legacyAWSServiceSlugs). Five other purchase tests also fail, including TestAWSRedriveRefusalSetIsExact.
  • A dynamodb alias added to the legacy map only: FAILS at :37 ("has no expected canonical family").
  • redshift mapped to search in config: FAILS at :41, as do TestCanonicalSuppressionService and TestApplySuppressions_AWSLegacySlugSpellings.
  • An alias added to config only: still passes, because the test checks one direction. This stays non-blocking as in my first review: purchase rejects a slug it does not know.

Commands (GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.10)

Reviewed by an independent agent with no author context (second reviewer). Review only: nothing was pushed, and the GitHub review state is unchanged.
