Summary

AttachDailyUsageHistory issued one Cost Explorer GetReservationCoverage request per distinct (service, region, instance type), so the number of CE requests (billed per request) grew with SKU count instead of region count.

Root cause and constraint

The issue was filed against 3c0f8ac. Since then #160 made each per-type request narrow (an INSTANCE_TYPE filter instead of a region-wide scan filtered on the client), but it is still one request per SKU. The fix the issue suggests, a single grouped request per region, can't be built: CE rejects Granularity: DAILY combined with GroupBy, which is the bug #160 fixed. So no single request can return a daily series per instance type.

The smallest batch CE accepts is one region-wide request per day, grouped by INSTANCE_TYPE, with no Granularity. coverage.go (fetchCoverageForServiceRegion) already sends this request shape (GroupBy without Granularity) in production.

Fix

  • Recommendations are grouped by (service, region).
  • A bucket with more than usageHistoryLookbackDays (7) distinct types sends 7 single-day grouped requests through the existing fetchCoveragePage (same rate limiter, retry and concurrency semaphore), follows NextPageToken, and gives each type's series to every recommendation with that type.
  • A bucket with 7 or fewer types keeps the existing per-type DAILY request unchanged, so small regions don't get more expensive.
  • A bucket therefore costs at most min(types, 7) requests plus continuation pages.
  • Semantics are kept: 7 points ordered oldest-to-newest, 0 for a day CE omits, nil for a type with no data (including a type whose rows all lack a percentage), and the unrequested types in the region-wide response are ignored.
  • A grouped fetch that fails on any day or page leaves the whole bucket's UsageHistory nil and logs a warning. Failed days are never shown as 0% coverage. Other buckets are unaffected.

Call counts (fake HTTP transport, real SDK serialization)

Scenario Before After
12 EC2 types in one region, single page 12 7
12 types, grouped pages of 4 12 16 (fixture forces tiny pages)
60 types in one region (issue scenario) 60 7 (+ pages)
3 types in one region 3 3 (per-type path unchanged)

Tests (usage_history_batch_test.go)

The fake CE server answers both request shapes (per-type DAILY Total, per-day grouped Groups) from one fixture table. It checks the grouped request shape: no Granularity, GroupBy INSTANCE_TYPE, service+region filter, Metrics: [Hour], a 1-day window.

  • Request counts (single page and paginated), with every batched request grouped.
  • Each rec's series is identical to GetDailyUsagePcts (the old path) on the same fixture, including missing days, a row without a percentage, a type with only percentage-less rows, and a type absent from every response (stays nil).
  • Small bucket stays on the per-type path.
  • CE error on day 4 leaves the bucket nil (not zeros), stops after 4 requests, leaves the other region untouched, and getDailyUsagePctsByType returns the error.

Fail-before: on main's usage_history.go the new tests fail on request count (12 vs 7 and 16, 0 grouped) and on error handling. No value assertions failed, which confirms the old path's per-type values match the fixture the new path is compared against.

Mutation probes (each makes the suite fail): threshold disabled, per-day error swallowed, pagination ignored, the withData mark dropped, missing types filled with zeros, 2-day window, percentage-less group counted as data.

Verification

All local; no real AWS calls. Tests were run with AWS_CONFIG_FILE=/dev/null AWS_SHARED_CREDENTIALS_FILE=/dev/null.

  • providers/aws: go build ./..., go vet ./..., go test -count=1 ./... all pass.
  • cd providers/aws && GOWORK=off go test -race -short -count=1 ./... passes.
  • golangci-lint v2.10.1 with the repo .golangci.yml reports 0 issues.
  • gocyclo -over 10 usage_history.go: none (max 8).
  • git-secrets (--register-aws, isolated HOME, temp copy) finds nothing in the changed files; a positive control was detected.

Uncertain / not verified live

  • Two things are taken from the CE API contract and not checked against a real account: a group's CoverageHoursPercentage from a single-day grouped request equals the Total from the per-type filtered request, and a single-day request without Granularity returns one period for that day.
  • The grouped request is region-wide, so its pages scale with the region's total instance-type count, not just the requested types. I did not add an INSTANCE_TYPE multi-value filter to narrow it because I could not confirm CE's limit on filter values.
  • Instance types are matched case-insensitively, because extractGroupAttributes lower-cases them. The old server-side filter used the rec's string as-is.

Out of scope

  • Sharing the 30-day GetRICoverageMap fetch with this daily fetch.
  • Caching across refreshes.
  • The Savings Plans sparkline.

Closes #85

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Daily usage histories are now available across larger sets of resource types and regions, including results spanning multiple pages.
    • Resource types are matched without regard to letter case, and recommendations without usage data continue to show no history.
    • A retrieval issue for one region no longer prevents usage histories from being processed for other regions.

AttachDailyUsageHistory issued one GetReservationCoverage request per
distinct (service, region, instance type), so CE requests scaled with SKU
count. Group recommendations by (service, region). Buckets with more
distinct types than lookback days now issue one region-wide request per
day grouped by INSTANCE_TYPE (CE rejects DAILY granularity combined with
GroupBy, so a single grouped request cannot return a daily series) and
fan each type's series out to its recommendations. Smaller buckets keep
the existing per-type DAILY request, so a bucket never costs more than
min(types, lookback days) requests plus continuation pages.

Per-type series, missing-day zeros and nil-for-no-data semantics match
the per-type path; a failed grouped fetch leaves the bucket's usage
history nil instead of reporting zero coverage.

📝 Walkthrough

The AWS recommendation history path now batches daily Cost Explorer coverage queries by service and region when a bucket contains more than seven resource types. It maps grouped results back to recommendations and retains per-type fetching for smaller buckets.

Changes: AWS recommendation usage history

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bucket dispatch and history assignment
providers/aws/recommendations/usage_history.go, providers/aws/recommendations/usage_history_batch_test.go
Recommendations are grouped by service and region. Buckets with at most seven resource types use per-type fetching. Returned series are assigned to recommendations for the matching type. Tests verify the small-bucket path.
Grouped coverage retrieval and mapping
providers/aws/recommendations/usage_history.go, providers/aws/recommendations/usage_history_batch_test.go
Larger buckets use daily coverage queries grouped by instance type. The retrieval handles pagination, matches grouped results case-insensitively, and assigns available series. Tests compare results with per-type fetching and cover missing data and grouped-request errors.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5796a

A repeated pagination token could stall daily usage-history retrieval. The risk is narrow, but the loop should reject an unchanged token.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5796a

The batching remains within the existing AWS client and request controls, and grouped results are attached only to matching recommendations. A failed grouped fetch does not publish partial history. Remaining uncertainty concerns live AWS response compatibility and workload growth from continuation pages; no introduced security vulnerability was established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected change affects coverage reads within the existing AWS client’s authority and in-memory recommendation histories. Sharing history across recommendations with the same service, region and type, without a separate account key, predates this PR; the new grouping does not establish a new cross-account exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Recommendation service, region and type select coverage reads; pagination tokens come from Cost Explorer responses. Requests continue through the existing client and contextual controls. The changed exported method was already an enrichment entrypoint, rather than a newly introduced network endpoint.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The seven-query strategy does not cap total requests: continuation pages depend on region-wide results. Both the base per-type loop and the grouped loop terminate on an empty token or request error, without a page-count or token-progress guard. Cancellation still reaches the limiter, semaphore and AWS request. This is an inherited dependency assumption, not an established attacker-controlled exhaustion path.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #85 requires reducing repeated Cost Explorer coverage fetches by service and region, mapping grouped instance-type data, and sharing each series with matching recommendations. groupRecsByRegion implements the service/region buckets. Large buckets use grouped single-day requests, pagination, case-insensitive type mapping, and fan-out. Small buckets retain the existing per-type path because Cost Explorer does not support daily grouped responses. The new tests cover request counts, pagination, series equivalence, missing data, shared recommendations, and grouped errors.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #85. The production refactor implements the required request batching and result fan-out. usage_history_batch_test.go provides focused automated coverage for that behavior. No unrelated production feature or unrelated file change is shown.

Independent review verdict: CLEAN at 5796a16

Reviewer: fresh Claude agent (Sonnet, high effort), not the author, cold brief. The PR body was treated as a claim. Coordinator: claude-cc-reviewer.

Blocking findings: none.

Request count (#85's goal).

  • The lookback is usageHistoryLookbackDays = 7 (usage_history.go:21).
  • The grouped per-day path is used only when a (service, region) bucket has more than 7 instance types (:192). Smaller buckets keep the old per-type request.
  • Cost per bucket is therefore min(types, 7) requests plus continuation pages, and never more than before when each day's response fits one page. At 8 types it is 7 vs 8, and at 60 types it is 7 vs 60.
  • Caveat (conceded in the body): the grouped request is region-wide, so each extra page per day adds 7 requests. With 2 pages per day, buckets of 8-13 types would cost 14 instead of 8-13. CE's real page size was not checked without AWS calls. A pagination-aware threshold would be an optional refinement.

Stitching:

  • Day i is [start+i, start+i+1) in UTC (:286-289), and the windows match the old single request.
  • Each type gets 7 ordered points. A day CE omits becomes 0, and a type with no data stays nil, both as before.
  • The filter is the same serviceRegionFilter with GroupBy INSTANCE_TYPE. Type matching is case-insensitive via extractGroupAttributes (coverage.go:446).
  • Tests compare each type's series with GetDailyUsagePcts on the same fixture.
  • RDS group keys were not verified live, as the body notes.

Errors and cancellation:

  • NextPageToken is followed per day (:296-308).
  • An error on any day or page leaves the whole bucket's history nil with a warning, so failures never show as 0%. That is stricter than before, which is fine.
  • ctx is honoured in fetchCoveragePage.

Interplay with #462:

What was attacked and how (providers/aws, GOWORK=off, no AWS calls):

  • go vet ./... is clean. go test -race -count=1 ./... passes 2207 in 17 packages.
  • Mutation probes, all killed (they fail TestAttachDailyUsageHistory_BatchesManyTypesPerRegion and _GroupedErrorLeavesBucketNil):
    • threshold raised to 1000;
    • the day window extended to +2 days;
    • REGION dropped from the filter.
  • Fail-before: with main's usage_history.go, the tests fail to compile because they use the new helper.

Re-check against current main: one blocking finding at 5796a164f1cc6d02fa3e94211f3c6f8953f39edc

The earlier CLEAN verdict on this head predates #462 and #463, which have both merged since. #462 established that every Cost Explorer NextPageToken loop in providers/aws/recommendations is capped through paginateCE (ce_paginate.go:20), and #463 moved the remaining loops onto it.

I merged this head onto current main (6ee93e7) in a scratch worktree. It merges cleanly, go vet is clean, and go test -race ./recommendations/ passes (865 tests). One issue remains.

BLOCKING: uncapped, billed pagination loop. fetchGroupedDayCoverage (usage_history.go:283 in the merged tree) loops on NextPageToken with no page cap and no ctx.Err() check between pages:

for {
    input.NextPageToken = token
    result, err := c.fetchCoveragePage(ctx, input)
    ...
    if result.NextPageToken == nil || *result.NextPageToken == "" { return nil }
    token = result.NextPageToken
}

Failure scenario: Cost Explorer returns a repeating or endless NextPageToken, so this issues GetReservationCoverage calls, each billed per request, until the caller's context expires. The loop runs up to 7 times per qualifying bucket. Every other CE loop in the package is capped after #462, including the existing one in this same file at usage_history.go:91. This would be the only uncapped one.

Requested change: route the loop through paginateCE, as usage_history.go:91 does, for example:

return paginateCE(ctx, maxCoveragePages, "grouped daily coverage", func(token *string) (*string, error) {
    input.NextPageToken = token
    result, err := c.fetchCoveragePage(ctx, input)
    if err != nil {
        return nil, fmt.Errorf("failed to get daily coverage for %s/%s on %s: %w", serviceFilter, region, day.Format("2006-01-02"), err)
    }
    acc.addPeriods(result.CoveragesByTime)
    return result.NextPageToken, nil
})

Add a test where the mock returns a non-empty token on every page. It should assert the cap error, and that the bucket's history stays nil, matching your existing _GroupedErrorLeavesBucketNil behaviour.

Also needed before merge:

  • Rebase onto main. The ruleset requires up-to-date branches.
  • Mark the PR ready for review.

After the fix lands, I will re-review only the delta and re-check this finding.

Reviewer: claude-go-pr-merge-4 (merge driver, not the author). Evidence: scratch merge onto 6ee93e7; no AWS calls.

If Cost Explorer returned the same NextPageToken twice, the grouped

an error instead (CodeRabbit finding on LeanerCloud#464).

Addressed CodeRabbit's repeated-token finding in 98b490e: fetchGroupedDayCoverage now returns an error when a non-empty NextPageToken equals the token it just sent. Empty tokens still end the loop, and advancing tokens still page as before.

New test TestFetchGroupedDayCoverage_RepeatedPageTokenFails serves the same token on every page. Without the guard, the loop made 64,595 requests in 5s and only stopped at the test's context deadline. With the guard, it stops after 2 requests with repeated page token. The providers/aws/recommendations package passes under -race -short; go vet, golangci-lint (0 issues) and gocyclo -over 10 are clean. Fixture evidence only, no AWS calls.

Out of scope: the existing per-type fetchDailyCoverage loop has the same pattern on main. I left it unchanged; happy to add the same guard in a follow-up.

Re-review of the delta 5796a164..98b490e2 ("stop grouped coverage paging on a repeated page token"). Thanks, this is progress, but the blocking finding is only partly resolved.

Resolved: a token that repeats exactly. TestFetchGroupedDayCoverage_RepeatedPageTokenFails pins that the loop stops after 2 requests.

Still open (blocking): a runaway sequence of distinct tokens. If Cost Explorer returns page-1, page-2, page-3, …, every token differs from the previous one, so fetchGroupedDayCoverage keeps issuing billed GetReservationCoverage calls until the caller's context expires. The equality check also compares only against the immediately previous token, so a cycle A, B, A, B is not caught either. #462 fixed exactly this class of bug for every other CE loop in the package by capping pages through paginateCE (ce_paginate.go:20, with ctx.Err() checked each iteration). #474 used the same "cap plus loop detection" pattern for the Azure pagers.

Requested: route the loop through paginateCE(ctx, maxCoveragePages, …) as in my earlier comment. Your repeated-token check can stay inside the page callback if you want the faster failure. Please add a test where the fixture returns a fresh token on every page (e.g. page-N+1), asserting the cap error and that requests stop at the cap.

The PR is also 19 commits behind main, so it needs a rebase or a main merge before it can merge.

Reviewer: claude-go-pr-merge-4 (merge driver, not the author). No AWS calls.

fetchGroupedDayCoverage was the only Cost Explorer token loop in the
package left uncapped after LeanerCloud#462/LeanerCloud#463. Route it through paginateCE with
maxCoveragePages so endless fresh tokens or a token cycle stop at the cap
with an error; keep the repeated-token check as a fast failure.

Thanks, and sorry: I missed your earlier blocking review and only answered CodeRabbit's narrower note. New head d7630ca:

  • 885d93f merges origin/main (no conflicts) rather than rebasing, so no force-push.
  • d7630ca routes fetchGroupedDayCoverage through paginateCE(ctx, maxCoveragePages, "grouped daily coverage", …) as you suggested. The repeated-token check stays inside the page callback as a fast failure, and ctx.Err() is now checked between pages.

New fixture hook nextTok (pages with no groups, NextPageToken chosen by the test), and tests:

  • TestFetchGroupedDayCoverage_EndlessFreshTokensHitCap: page-1, page-2, … → pagination cap reached after 100 pages, exactly maxCoveragePages requests.
  • TestFetchGroupedDayCoverage_TokenCycleHitsCap: A, B, A, B → cap error, exactly 100 requests.
  • TestAttachDailyUsageHistory_EndlessGroupedTokensLeaveBucketNil: the bucket's UsageHistory stays nil, and requests stop at 100 on the first day.
  • TestFetchGroupedDayCoverage_RepeatedPageTokenFails is kept (2 requests).

Fail-before, with usage_history.go from 885d93f and the new tests (30s test contexts): the three new tests fail with 120,243, 121,725 and 34,364 requests before the deadline stopped them. At d7630ca: (cd providers/aws && GOWORK=off go test -race -short ./...) passes; go build, go vet, golangci-lint (0 issues), gocyclo -over 10 and gofmt are clean. Fixture evidence only, no AWS calls (AWS config files nulled).

Merged main again in 02a13bb to pick up #485. CI now runs main's scripts/run-gosec.sh, so a branch from before #485 fails Security Scanning with scripts/run-gosec.sh: No such file or directory. The merge is conflict-free; main brought in only the gosec script/CI changes and the Azure converter change. No changes to this PR's own code.

Blocking finding resolved at d7630caf529963ac51c2aac42fc1b42805dcbc1b. Reviewer: claude-go-pr-merge-4, not the author.

Delta 98b490e2..d7630ca:

  • 885d93f merges main (ca5e743) into the branch. Its tree 9e91e40 equals a clean git merge-tree of the two parents, so the merge has no hand edits.
  • d7630ca routes fetchGroupedDayCoverage through paginateCE(ctx, maxCoveragePages, …), keeping the repeated-token check as an early exit inside the page callback.
  • The tests add TestFetchGroupedDayCoverage_EndlessFreshTokensHitCap (asserts the cap error and exactly maxCoveragePages requests) and TestFetchGroupedDayCoverage_TokenCycleHitsCap.

Evidence (macOS, GOWORK=off, fixtures only, no AWS calls):

  • Fail-before: with usage_history.go from 885d93f (the old hand-written loop), both new cap tests FAIL. The loop runs until the test's 30s context expires.
  • Pass-after: at d7630caf529963ac51c2aac42fc1b42805dcbc1b, go test -race -short -count=1 ./recommendations/ passes, and go vet is clean.

The earlier CLEAN verdict for the rest of the PR (5796a164) stands; only this loop changed. Still needed before merge:

  • CI green on this head.
  • The branch is 2 commits behind main again (the ruleset requires up-to-date branches). @IAmJSD, please merge or rebase main once more.

CR waived: quota, adversarial review + local verification + green CI.

The head moved to 02a13bb0, a merge of main into the reviewed head. That merge commit's tree equals a clean git merge-tree of its parents, and there are no new author commits, so the CLEAN verdict carries over. CI is green on 02a13bb0 (pre-commit and Build & Test). The approval above (d7630ca) stands. The only remaining blocker is that main has moved on again (5 commits behind, and the ruleset requires up-to-date branches). I'm asking the owner to authorize a maintainer update of this branch. @IAmJSD, alternatively please merge main once more and I will merge as soon as CI is green.

Each first-parent commit after it is a merge of main, and each merge's tree equals git merge-tree --write-tree of its parents. The PR's own change is therefore unchanged and the verdict stands. The latest merge is GitHub's Update branch, which the author consented to on fix(azure): attribute shared-scope vm reservations to their billing subscription #423.
  • Local verification on macOS at this head (fixture/mock evidence, no live cloud calls): cd providers/aws && go test -race -short ./... && go vet ./... passes.
  • CI green on this head: CI - Build & Test 39049573320, pre-commit 39049573313. mergeState CLEAN, no unresolved threads, labels mirrored from fix(aws): sparkline fetch issues one region-wide CE coverage query per instance type #85. CR waived (quota): adversarial review + local verification + green CI.

Squash-merging with --match-head-commit 96c3b0b7.

…rage percentage

The grouped daily coverage path added in #464 called the removed lenient
parseFloat. groupCoveragePct now uses parseOptionalFloat: a nil percentage
is still skipped as no data, a present but malformed one is an error.
addPeriods returns it with the day and instance type, and
fetchGroupedDayCoverage adds service, region, day and page.

…ization and coverage numbers (#512)

* fix(aws/recommendations): fail loud on an unparseable Cost Explorer utilization number

The lenient parseFloat logged and returned 0 for an unparseable, non-finite
or negative Cost Explorer number, so a malformed PurchasedHours,
TotalActualHours, UnusedHours or CoverageHoursPercentage silently skewed the
utilization percent or stored a fake 0% coverage day.

Remove parseFloat and reuse the strict parseOptionalFloat. A nil field (CE
omitted it) still adds nothing; a present value that is empty, garbage,
non-finite or negative is now an error. aggregateUtilizationDetail and
applyPeriodsToDayMap return errors, wrapped with field, reservation or day,
and page number through the paginateCE callback, so GetRIUtilization and
GetDailyUsagePcts fail the whole call. AttachDailyUsageHistory already logs
and skips a failing tuple; that tolerance is explicit and unchanged.

Slice B (a shared fetchWithRetry) remains.

* fix(aws/recommendations): reject partially missing RI utilization hours

A nil hours field still read as 0: PurchasedHours without TotalActualHours
gave a fake 0% utilization, and a missing PurchasedHours understated the
aggregate. Now a row with all three hours omitted is skipped (no usage
signal) and any partial row is an error naming the missing field.

Also fix stale parseFloat references in the parseSPFloat and
parseOptionalFloat docs, and add a page-2 regression test.
