fix(MessageList): restore the older-page anchor on iOS WebKit - #3316
Conversation
Port of the v14 fix (#3312). On master the anchor logic was stubbed out (`captureAnchor: () => null`, `restoreAnchor: () => undefined`) and `loadingMore` was never passed to the scroll manager, so an older page that arrived near the top was compensated by a one-shot relative `scrollBy(heightDelta)`. On iOS WebKit a touch fling keeps animating after the finger lifts and overrides programmatic scroll positions, so the reading position was lost (measured on a real channel: the list ended ~20,000 px from where the user was reading). - Bring back anchor capture/restore in `useScrollLocationLogic` and pass the paginator's `isLoading` as `loadingMore`, so the manager's preserve-anchor mode runs. - Restore with an absolute `scrollTop` derived from the anchor's layout offset (`offsetTop`), so re-applying it is idempotent even where geometry reads right after a scroll are stale. - On iOS WebKit only, hide the list's overflow while the restore writes the position, which ends the fling, and hand scrolling back once it settles (also on unmount; an inline `overflow-y` set by the app is restored, not cleared). 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Do not block all non-GET requests.
queryChannels retrieves channel data with POST /channels, so this guard also blocks normal channel loading and prevents the probe from reaching pagination. Restrict the guard to mutating endpoints or allow the channel-query request. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

🎯 Goal
Port of the v14 fix (#3312) to
master(v15). On iOS WebKit (Safari, Chrome iOS), loading an older page of messages inMessageListloses the reading position: after a touch fling the list ends far from the message the user was reading.Refs #3311

🛠 Implementation details
masteris not a straight copy of the v14 code: its anchor logic was stubbed out (captureAnchor: () => null, restoreAnchor: () => undefined, markedMERGE-RECONCILE), andMessageListnever passedloadingMoreto the scroll manager. So the manager's preserve-anchor mode never ran, and an older page arriving near the top was compensated by a one-shot relativescrollBy(heightDelta). On iOS a touch fling keeps animating after the finger lifts and overrides programmatic scroll positions, so that position was lost. This PR reconciles it, reusing the v14 implementation:
useScrollLocationLogic, andMessageListpasses the paginator'sisLoadingasloadingMore, so the existing preserve-anchor mode inuseMessageListScrollManagerruns. The restore is guarded against the autoscroll-to-bottom paths (isRestoringOlderAnchorRef) and pauses the manager's other adjustments while it runs.master's ownsuppressAutoscrollandjustReachedLatestMessageSethandling is untouched.scrollTopderived from the anchor's layout offset (offsetTop, independent of the current scroll), so re-applying it is idempotent even where geometry read right after a scroll is stale.CSS.supports('-webkit-touch-callout', 'none')). While the restore writes the position the list'soverflow-yis hidden, which ends the fling, and it is handed back once the position settles (also on unmount; an inlineoverflow-yset by the app is restored, not cleared). The scrollbar is an overlay on iOS, so desktop browsers are untouched.Verification,
examples/viteonmasteragainst a real channel:masterscrollTop20655, anchor 4569 px above the viewport (position lost)preserve-anchor)scrollTop0Desktop Safari 26.2, Firefox 157 and Chrome 152, same app, 3 older-page loads each: no jumps, no
scrollBy, and the iOS code never engaged.Tests (
useScrollLocationLogic.test.tsx): absolute restore under unstable geometry reads, the iOS lock and its release, unmount mid-restore, an app's inlineoverflow-y, non-iOS untouched, and the previous height-delta behaviour when no load is reported. Five of them fail on the previousmastercode. Full suite, yarn types, yarn types:scriptsand lint pass. Not covered: iOS 26 (the reporter's version) and a physical device; the iOS sample is a handful of loads on a simulator. In browsers I did not re-run the send-a-message, jump-to-latest and thread checks on
master(I did on v14, where they were unchanged); these paths are covered by the existingMessageListunit tests, which pass. BecauseloadingMorenow reflects the paginator'sisLoading, newer-page loads and jumps also toggle the manager's load tracking; those only act on a pure prepend.🎨 UI Changes
None. During the (typically sub-second) restore on iOS the list does not respond to touch.
