Stacked on #868 (MLX engine). Only the last two commits are new; the rest is #868.

Summary

Two fixes to how Cotabby runs mlx_lm.server, both applied by a small Python bootstrap that starts the stock server (MLXToolchainRules.fullCacheServerScript, launched as python -I -c <bootstrap> <mlx_lm.server path> <args>):

Let the MLX server reuse its prompt cache after an edit. Gemma 4 builds a RotatingKVCache for its sliding-window layers. Once a prompt plus its output passes the 512-token window, the ring buffer wraps and can no longer be trimmed, so the server re-processes the whole prompt whenever a request diverges inside the shared prefix: a backspace, or the next keystroke after a generation. The bootstrap gives those layers a plain KVCache, the MLX counterpart of llama.cpp's swa_full; the model's own mask still limits attention to the window. The cache module, the server and the batch generator each bind make_prompt_cache by name, so all three are replaced, or none when the installed mlx-lm differs.

Keep the MLX server alive on an exact prompt-cache hit. When a request's tokens equal a cached entry, mlx-lm 0.32's LRUPromptCache.fetch_nearest_cache leaves no tokens to process; the batch generator then raises "Sequence N has an empty prompt" on the generation thread, which is never restarted, and every request fails until Cotabby restarts the server about 8 seconds later. Accepting a suggestion triggers it, because the next prompt is the cached prompt plus its completion. The bootstrap always leaves one token to process: it trims one off a trimmable cache, or falls back to a full re-process. This guard applies to every model.

Each patch checks that it fits the installed mlx-lm and otherwise writes a note to the server log and runs the stock behaviour. Without a known Python interpreter the server starts exactly as before.

Validation

  • xcodebuild test (Debug, macOS): 2,950 tests, 0 failures, including new cases for the bootstrap launch command and its fallback.
  • swiftlint --strict on the changed app sources: no violations.
  • mlx-lm 0.32.0, gemma-4-e4b-5bit, ~1,080-token prompts, Apple M5 Max, sent to the server Cotabby itself started (signed Release builds of my fork with and without these two commits; the MLX code is the same as on this branch), median of each request type:
Request Before After
Backspace and retype 536 ms 232 ms
Edit a word 800 ms 279 ms
Append at the end 236 ms 227 ms
Repeat the same prompt, or accept and continue generation thread dies succeeds, re-processes 1 token
  • An edited prompt re-processes 1-2 tokens instead of all 1,082.
  • Logits are identical to the stock cache below the 512-token window; past it they stay as close to an uncached pass as the stock cache does (MLX's own decode-vs-prefill difference).

Linked issues

None.

Risk / rollout notes

  • The full-size cache keeps every position of Gemma 4's sliding-window layers, so its memory grows with the prompt instead of stopping at 512 tokens. It applies only to gemma4 / gemma4_text with no max_kv_size.
  • Both patches touch mlx-lm internals. They are verified against 0.32.0 and disable themselves, with a log line, when the names they wrap are missing or already replaced.

Fix the server-stop and toolchain-removal races before merging.

Fix All in CodexFindings

  1. P1 Old servers survive quitting ▶
  2. P1 Removed MLX returns as installed ▶
  3. P2 Cache fallback fails too late ▶

Summary

Adds an optional, app-managed MLX engine and patches its prompt cache to reuse edited prompts and keep exact hits from killing generation.

  • Gemma 4 edits reuse more of the saved prompt.
  • Exact prompt-cache hits leave the MLX server ready to generate.

Acknowledged rollout tradeoff: senadaruc states that full-size Gemma caches use memory proportional to prompt length. This intentional cost is not reported as a finding.

MLX is a fourth engine kind (raw value "mlx", Apple Silicon only) that counts as on-device:
typing history, the document tail and the local visual-context limits stay available to it,
while predict-ahead and speculative continuation stay off as for the endpoint. Settings gain the
MLX model id, the prompt-cache cap (1 GiB, clamped to 256 MiB...8 GiB) and the per-power-source
MLX models. The MLX values (paths, repo ids, catalog, states) and the pure rules (cache scan,
model compatibility, toolchain rules, server decision, log filter, generator failure) come with
their tests.

MLXToolchainProvisioner finds a compatible mlx-lm (>= 0.32.0) or installs a pinned mlx-lm 0.32.0
with uv 0.12.18, whose download is SHA-256 checked and whose code signature must name Astral's
team. MLXServerManager launches mlx_lm.server on 127.0.0.1 with HF_HUB_OFFLINE=1, waits for
readiness and a warm-up, restarts it after a crash or a dead generator (confirmed through
/health), stops it on engine change and quit, cleans up an orphan from a crashed launch, and keeps
its stderr in mlx-server.log under -cotabby-debug. MLXModelDownloader lists, downloads and deletes MLX models in the
Hugging Face cache. A second OpenAICompatibleSuggestionEngine instance talks to the server with
mlx_lm's sampling fields and stops the stream at a sentence end; the router sends .mlx to it with
no fallback to another engine.

CotabbyAppEnvironment owns the MLX services and drives the server from one pure decision
(engine, model, cache cap, toolchain, cached models); AppDelegate starts that work outside the
test host, unloads the llama model while MLX runs, and stops the server on quit. Engine & Model
gets an MLX section (install/remove/retry, catalog, cached and custom models, prompt-cache cap),
and the power-source pickers, Home, the menu bar and the attention badge know MLX. The
Performance pane's CPU and memory include the MLX server while it runs, and the menu bar popover
shows Cotabby's CPU, RAM and GPU use (with the server) while it is open.

Wrap long lines (the MLX warm-up prompt uses string line continuations, so its text is
unchanged), pass the MLX server decision its inputs as one struct, replace two large tuples with
a pipe parameter and a small struct, move the dead-generator handling into its own method, and
use failable UTF-8 decoding. The MLX output collector now splits stderr into lines as bytes, so a
character cut across two pipe reads is decoded whole.

reportBroken cleared the live process and only recorded it as stopping inside a task, so a quit

mlx_lm.server loads the repo id offline, which huggingface_hub resolves through refs/main, so a
snapshot without it is no longer offered. A snapshot now counts only when every entry reaches a
readable file and a sharded model's index finds every shard, so a download stopped between files
is not offered. An unrelated .incomplete blob elsewhere in the repo no longer hides a complete
snapshot.

Gemma 4 builds a RotatingKVCache for its sliding-window layers. Once a prompt
plus its output passes the 512-token window the ring buffer wraps and cannot be
trimmed, so mlx_lm.server re-processes the whole prompt whenever a request
diverges from a cached one inside the shared prefix: a backspace, or a
keystroke after a generation.

The server now starts through a small bootstrap that gives those layers a plain
KVCache (the MLX counterpart of llama.cpp's swa_full). The model's own mask
still limits attention to the window, for prefill and decode alike. The cache
module, the server and the batch generator each bind make_prompt_cache by name,
so all three are replaced, or none if another mlx-lm version differs.

Measured with gemma-4-e4b-5bit, ~1,080-token prompts, mlx-lm 0.32.0:
- an edited prompt re-processes 1-2 tokens instead of all 1,082
- backspace edit 698-993 ms -> 280 ms, retype after it 797 ms -> 261 ms
- logits stay within MLX's own decode-vs-prefill noise: identical below the
window, and past it as close to an uncached pass as the stock cache
When a request's tokens equal a cached entry, mlx_lm 0.32's
LRUPromptCache.fetch_nearest_cache returns no tokens left to process. The
server then drops every prompt segment, the batch generator raises "Sequence N
has an empty prompt" on the generation thread, and that thread is never
restarted: every later request fails until Cotabby restarts the server, about
8 seconds later. Accepting a suggestion triggers it, since the next prompt is
the cached prompt plus its completion. mlx-server.log shows it in normal use.

The server bootstrap now wraps fetch_nearest_cache so one token is always left
to process: it trims that token off a trimmable cache, or falls back to a full
re-process. The guard applies to every model, independently of the Gemma 4
full-size cache, and each fix is skipped with a note if it does not fit the
installed mlx-lm.

Reproduced against mlx_lm.server with gemma-4-e4b-5bit: prompt, repeat, then
prompt + completion killed the generation thread on the stock server and on
the previous bootstrap. With the guard, all five requests succeed and each
re-processes one token.

The new MLX engine works in the common path, but choosing a model with "Use" while power-based switching is on can silently revert to the profile's earlier model. An unexpected health-check response can also restart a server that is still responding and eventually stop MLX suggestions. Resolve both before merging. The picker-label test should also be fixed so it passes on Intel test machines.

P1 Old servers survive quitting

After reportBroken() clears current, the old server can still be inside its stop grace period. Changing models reaches this early return and launches another server without waiting. A second model change then replaces the old server's only reference in stoppingProcess. Quitting before that server exits leaves it outside shutdownSync(), with its PID record already gone.

Wait for the pending stop before launching another server, or track every stopping process until it exits.

P1 Removed MLX returns as installed

A rescan starts when the MLX pane opens. If the user removes MLX while its Python probe is still running, that probe can finish after removal publishes .notInstalled. This code then restores .ready for deleted paths because it checks only activeInstall.

The server tries to launch the removed Python, and Settings shows MLX as installed instead of offering installation. Invalidate pending refreshes when removal starts and reject their late results.

P2 Cache fallback fails too late

The bootstrap replaces functions before checking every helper they need. can_trim_prompt_cache and trim_prompt_cache are first read inside fetch_nearest_cache. The full-cache wrapper likewise reads KVCache and RotatingKVCache only when called.

If an accepted newer mlx-lm keeps the wrapped functions but moves a helper, startup succeeds and a later request raises AttributeError outside the fallback handlers. Resolve these helpers before replacing either function, and test that a missing helper leaves the stock functions unchanged.

Pin isAppleSilicon in test_pickerLabel_marksOnlyUnselectableEngines.

The loop now covers .mlx because SuggestionEngineKind.allCases includes it. The call does not pass isAppleSilicon, so it uses the default MLXHardware.isAppleSilicon. That default is a compile-time #if arch(arm64) check. On an x86_64 test runner, pickerLabel(for: .mlx, ...) returns "MLX (Unavailable)". The assertion then fails against engine.displayLabel. Pass isAppleSilicon: true explicitly so the test result does not depend on the host architecture. The new tests in lines 18-43 already pass it.

🌐 Web query:

Which mlx-lm release added the GET /health endpoint with generation_available() to mlx_lm.server?

💡 Result:

The endpoint itself predates the change: **mlx-lm v0.31.4** is the first release that includes the health check tied to `generation_available()` (HTTP 503 when generation is unavailable). The change was committed on September 5, 2026; the release history shows v0.31.4 as the release after v0.31.3. ([github.com](https://github.com/ml-explore/mlx-lm/commit/6d21ce4))

Do not classify an HTTP response as unreachable.

MLXHealthProbe.check maps every status other than 200 or 503 to .unreachable. mlxGeneratorFailure then restarts the server for every result other than .healthy or .cancelled. A 404 or 500 response therefore can restart a server that answered the request, even though the status does not prove that its generator is dead.

The minimum supported version is already 0.32.0. The version-minimum concern does not apply.

Update the status-code handling in MLXHealthProbe.check so any received HTTP
response with an unexpected status is treated as reachable rather than
.unreachable; reserve .unreachable for cases where no HTTP response is
available, while preserving the existing 200 and 503 classifications.

Write the selected MLX model to the active power profile.

When power-based switching is enabled, the active profile stores its own MLX model ID. The “Use” button updates only the global MLX model ID, so a later profile application can restore the previous model. The “In Use” label can also reflect the global ID instead of the active profile.

Update the active battery or plugged-in profile when “Use” selects a model.

Update the “Use” button action in the MLX model options to save the selected
model ID to the active battery or plugged-in profile when power-based switching
is enabled, rather than updating only the global setting. Ensure the “In Use”
state reflects that active profile’s model ID; preserve the existing
global-setting behavior when profile switching is disabled.

Expand Advanced when search reveals the prompt-cache setting.

SettingsIndex.swift, Line 185 makes “MLX Prompt Cache Memory” a search result, but its .settingsItem(.mlxPromptCache) target is inside this disclosure group. When Advanced is collapsed, selecting that result cannot show the control. Bind the expansion state and open the group when navigation reveals .mlxPromptCache. A DisclosureGroup hides its content while collapsed. (developer.apple.com)

Bind the Advanced DisclosureGroup’s expansion state and set it to expanded when
settings navigation reveals the .mlxPromptCache target, so the prompt-cache
control is visible after search selection.
