Prevent startup recursion on unsupported macOS versions - #12
Prevent synchronous re-entry when an unsupported macOS version disables layout management, and prevent unsupported systems from starting native layout operations. This addresses the startup crash reported in #11.
Validation
git diff --check
Debug build and full automated test suite on macOS 26.4 (73 XCTest tests, one skipped; 11 Swift Testing tests)
Release build
Live menu bar behavior and Safe Reset / normal quit restoration
macOS 27 runtime validation
The reported crash has not been tested on macOS 27. The regression test exercises the synchronous callback on macOS 26.4; a macOS 27 user needs to confirm the behavior on their machine. This PR does not add macOS 27 native hiding support.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Prevented layout management from being enabled or applied on systems that do not support hiding menu bar items. Saved settings are disabled on those systems, and items remain visible.

Walkthrough
MenuBarItemStore now accounts for whether the operating system supports hiding. When hiding is unsupported, it disables layout management, avoids layout operations, and prevents re-entrant disabling. A test covers the saved-preference and callback behavior.
The store checks hiding support when loading and setting layout management, and returns without applying a layout when hiding is unsupported. The test checks that re-entrant disabling leaves the store and saved preference disabled and applies no selections.
The startup safeguard leaves macOS 27 test failures and two bounded user-facing problems: misleading setup guidance and interrupted icon activation. Address these before merging, or explicitly accept the remaining limitations.

Explanation
The title names the main change: preventing startup recursion on unsupported macOS versions. The raw summary shows the store now disables layout management and skips native layout operations when hiding is unsupported, and the PR objectives state the same goal. The title is concise, specific, and free of file lists or vague terms.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the 'What changed' section, which explains the synchronous re-entry fix and the guard against native layout operations on unsupported systems. It links the change to issue #11. The Validation checklist is filled in, with build and test results recorded for macOS 26.4. Release build and live menu bar behavior are still unchecked, and the Environment section is missing. The 'Why' section is missing as a separate heading, although the root cause appears in the 'What changed' text. The description also says the reported crash is untested on macOS 27, which is useful context.
Resolution
Add a separate 'Why' section that explains the user impact and root cause of the startup crash in issue #11. Add an 'Environment' section that lists the macOS version, Mac and display setup, and affected source apps. Update the Validation checklist to show whether the Release build and live menu bar checks have run, or state why they are deferred. Confirm whether the Safe Reset and normal quit restoration checks apply, since the layout code changed.

Test unsupported onboarding with a hide request.
Apply a nonempty onboarding selection with hideSelectedIcons: true to a store with supportsHiding: false. Assert that both the store state and saved preference remain disabled. The current tests would not detect removal of the capability check in configureSelection.

Assert the saved preference immediately after initialization.
If initialization stops clearing the saved preference, the setter clears it before the assertion. Add an assertion before the setter calls to cover initialization.

- Line 159: Update the unsupported-layout-setting path in MenuBarItemStore so it
does not call cancelOperation() or otherwise cancel activation or capture;
preserve the existing behavior for supported settings where a layout operation
can run.
- Line 146: Update the `layoutManagementEnabled` condition in `MenuBarItemStore`
so that when layout management is unsupported on macOS 27, the UI shows the
existing unsupported-macOS explanation instead of the “Choose the icons to place
in the second row” prompt, even when icons are selected. Preserve the current
behavior for supported systems and avoid adding a redundant selection step.
- Line 37: Update the three layout tests that create a MenuBarItemStore to pass
supportsHiding: true explicitly, so they exercise supported-layout behavior
regardless of the runner’s OS version; leave the initializer’s OS-dependent
default unchanged.
