Description

The last wave of stage 3 of the test framework's move from TUT to Catch2 (TM24): newview's tests. 85 TUT files with 832 tests become thirteen Catch2 binaries. Each test file still runs in a process of its own.

Binary Files Notes
newview_tests 72 the models, and Script Studio's units over one headless UI. The viewer has no library, so the 74 viewer files they need are compiled into the binary once each
newview_gl_tests 2 the selection outline and the depth under the HUD, on llrender's shared hidden window
eleven <name>_test 1 each the Linden-era tests whose hand stubs of llui, llxml and the viewer differ from one another

It stacks on #472 (rye/tm23-test-fixes).

A seam the tests needed (9a56b40)

  • The problem: code that works off the main thread hands its results back through the main loop's queue, and does the work in place where there is none, as in a test. Nine places asked for the queue by its name, so in one process a queue one test made switched every later test onto the threaded path.
  • The seam: they ask ALMainLoop::queue() now, in llcommon. It answers as before unless a test holds an ALMainLoop::Choice, which says which queue it answers, or none, while it lives.
  • The tests: newview's test queue no longer has the main loop's name, so making it chooses nothing. alscriptlookup's threaded case and alscriptstudiomasters' fixture choose it for themselves.

The conversion (0032a76)

  • al_studio_test_common goes. Its 17 files, and each test's own, are compiled into newview_tests once.
  • llvocache.cpp is an object library of its own. It leaves out what reads the viewer's settings under LL_TEST, and the viewer compiles the same file without it.
  • Eleven binaries, not the plan's nine. The plan joins llworldmap with llworldmipmap, and llslurl with llviewernetwork. Each pair still defines conflicting stubs of gSavedSettings, LLControlGroup, LLTrans and LLWorldMipmap, so they stay apart until one set of fakes replaces them. They take llui's headers, which the viewer's precompiled header names, without its library.
  • Hand resolution: tut2catch.py marked one site for review, in noise's MSVC-only branch, and it was resolved by hand.

The idiom pass (83b0c1d), by twelve agents

  • Names: 782 of 832 changed. 501 had commas, which a Catch2 test spec reads as "or", and the Linden tests' were "Welcome to Alchemy Discussions! #1" and the like.

  • Messages: 5,480 to 3,841, with 180 CAPTUREs.

  • Helpers: 11 asserting helpers are named for it, such as require_pane and require_throws_with_cert.

  • Strength: 21 CHECKs whose subject the next lines index or follow are REQUIREs, and 753 REQUIREs that guarded nothing are CHECKs.

    No case and no assertion was added, removed or moved.

Run setup and guard checks (21a7051)

  • llui's and llrender's checks: newview_tests takes them, as llui's binaries do. The headless UI and the colour table are made before the first case, and what a frame clears is cleared after each.
  • newview_test_checks: it makes the stand-in main loop before the first case. It watches the queue ALMainLoop answers, the settings groups, and Script Studio's recovery store, save history and viewer, plus llcommon's checks: thread pools, work queues and the log level.
  • Not llcommon's listener: it makes the event pumps afresh after every case. The viewer's own event APIs, LLViewerControlListener among them, listen on the pumps from before main, and llviewercontrollistener's cases found none after the first. The eleven Linden-era binaries take none of these checks: each runs alone, and lllogininstance's second case relies on pumps its first made.
  • Process-lifetime threads: the recovery stores' writer is made by the fixtures that make a store, as it was when each file had a process of its own, and the harness's teardown stops it. alscriptlookup's threaded case accepts the disk walks' thread as the process's once it has made it.
  • Tested: I broke a case for each check on purpose, and each check named the case responsible.

Checklist

  • I have provided a clear title and detailed description for this pull request.
  • If useful, I have included media such as screenshots and video to show off my changes.
  • I have tested the changes locally and verified they work as intended.
  • All new and existing tests pass.
  • Code follows the project's style guidelines.
  • Documentation has been updated if needed.
  • Any dependent changes have been merged and published in downstream modules.
  • I have reviewed the contributing guidelines.

Additional Notes

  • Tested on macOS arm64, RelWithDebInfo:
    • the full build is clean;
    • all 475 tests of ctest -LE manual pass, and so do all 19 pending combined runs, newview's two among them;
    • each of the thirteen binaries, run whole, passes 10 random orders and 20 repeats with no state guard report;
    • with AL_TEST_PER_CASE, all 832 newview cases pass, each in a process of its own;
    • no anonymous type is used with a name-keyed registry in two files of one binary.
  • Parity: tut_parity.py holds every file to the TUT executables' recorded results: 832 tests, 830 ok and 2 skipped.
    • At the conversion commit: it holds plain for 84 files, and under --recounted for noise.
    • Never-run site: one assertion site was reviewed as never running in a passing case here. alselectionoutline_gl's check of the unreversed depth runs only under reverse-Z, which needs clip control, and this Mac's GL 4.1 context has none.
    • After the idiom pass: it holds under --recounted for all 85, every case's count unchanged.
  • Not compiled here: noise's MSVC branch and alscriptkeymap's non-Mac keys.
  • Seen once and not explained: while the recovery writer's thread started during run setup, alongside the UI being built, one start in several hundred found the heap corrupt in malloc. 400 further starts didn't show it. The writer now starts inside a case, as it did under TUT.
  • Old test bugs the idiom pass found are listed in 83b0c1d's message and left as they were, for a follow-up like Test framework: fix the old test bugs in llui's tests #472.
  • Merge order: this should follow Test framework, stage 3: llui's tests in Catch2 #471 and Test framework: fix the old test bugs in llui's tests #472. Once they merge, its base becomes develop.

The viewer's behavior is essentially unchanged; this work moves tests to a new framework and changes how the main-loop work queue is looked up. Two tests can crash the whole test run instead of reporting a single failure if the code they cover regresses. Guarding those accesses is a quick fix, and the change is otherwise ready to merge.

I queued my hops beside the loop,
A scoped choice led me through the group.
Old tests found a Catch2 home,
New checks watched each queue that roamed.
I thumped the build, then munched a leaf.

Code that works off the main thread hands what it found back through the
queue the main loop services; where there is none, in a test, it does the
work in place. Nine places asked for that queue by its name, so in one
test process a queue one test made under that name chose the way for
every test after it: alscriptlookup's walks went to a thread for the
cases that rely on their being done in place.

They ask ALMainLoop::queue() now. It answers as they did, unless a test
holds an ALMainLoop::Choice, which says which queue it answers, or none,
for as long as it lives. newview's test queue no longer has the main
loop's name, so making it chooses nothing; alscriptlookup's threaded case

Ahead of TM24, where newview's tests share one process.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
TM24, the last wave of stage 3: newview's 85 TUT files, 832 tests,
become thirteen Catch2 binaries, each file still run in a process of
its own:
- newview_tests, 72 files: the models, and Script Studio's units, many
  built over one headless UI on the source tree's skins and fonts. The
  viewer has no library, so the 74 files of it they need are compiled
  into the binary once each, where each test compiled its own copies;
  al_studio_test_common, the archive the Script Studio tests shared,
  goes. llvocache.cpp, which leaves out what reads the viewer's
  settings under LL_TEST, is an object library of its own with that
  define, since the viewer compiles the same file without it;
- newview_gl_tests, the two that draw on llrender's shared hidden
  window: the selection outline and the depth under the HUD;
- a binary each for the eleven Linden-era tests whose hand stubs of
  llui, llxml and the viewer differ from one another: lldateutil,
  lllogininstance, llremoteparcelrequest, llsecapi, llsechandler_basic,
  llslurl, lltextureinfo, llviewerhelputil, llviewernetwork, llworldmap
  and llworldmipmap. They take llui's headers, which the viewer's
  precompiled header names, without its library.
The fakes, the studio's stand-ins and the settings group are SUPPORT
objects.

The files are tut2catch.py's output, with the names the idiom pass that
follows chose. It marked one site TM-CHECK, in code this Mac does not
compile, resolved by hand: noise's comparison with MSVC's rand() (an
ensure_equals() over its draws).

tut_parity.py, against the TUT executables' recorded results (832
tests, 830 ok and 2 skipped), holds plain for 84 files and under
--recounted for noise, with one assertion site reviewed as never
running in a passing case: alselectionoutline_gl's check of the
unreversed depth, which runs only under reverse-Z, where the context
has clip control, as this Mac's GL 4.1 context does not. All 98
entries pass, and newview_tests passes whole, in declared order and in
random ones.

The idiom pass over TM24's conversion, by twelve agents on copies,
merged back onto it. Names, messages and assertion strength only: every
case and every assertion is where the conversion put it.
- Names: 782 of 832 changed. Most were set_test_name sentences or the
  first sentence of a comment, 501 had commas, which a Catch2 test spec
  reads as "or", and the Linden tests' were "#1" and the like. Where a
  shorter name dropped a why, a comment above the case keeps it.
- Messages: 5,480 to 3,841, with 180 CAPTUREs. Most of those removed
  restated their check, or numbered it; most that remain say which
  step, pass or input a failure is at. A few that described another
  check than their own say what theirs checks.
- 11 asserting helpers are named for it: require_pane, require_saved,
  require_contains, require_throws_with_cert and the like, and in
  llvocache, which names its helpers in camel case, requireSameEntry.
- 21 CHECKs whose subject the next lines index or follow are REQUIREs,
  and 753 REQUIREs that guarded nothing are CHECKs. One of llworldmap's
  sat inside a try whose catch(...) reported its own failure as a throw.
- The selection outline's and the HUD depth's convention loops say
  which convention with CAPTURE(reverse), and the helper that wrote it
  into every message is gone.
- noise's namespace tut, kept only for the code the converter could not
  compile, is an anonymous namespace.

tut_parity.py holds all 85 files under --recounted, every case's count
unchanged, with the conversion's one site reviewed as never running
here.

Old test bugs the agents found, left as they were:
- reads with no guard, where a failure would crash rather than fail:
  .back() and [n] of what nothing sized (statuses, reports, asks,
  candidates, did, the explorer's rows, the crumbs' path), a find<>(),
  findChild(), findDoc(), part(), word() or optional used unchecked,
  and shared_ptr texts dereferenced, in most of Script Studio's tests;
  lutcube reads a rejected cube; alcrashreporter indexes past a length;
- checks that cannot fail: llviewerassetstats indexes the wrong LLSD
  level twice, so four checks compare undefined with 0;
  llsechandler_basic's grid checks read the credential it did not
  change, and its authenticator check reads the identifier again;
  alscriptregionusage, alscriptnavigation and llworldmap each have one
  that the setup already decides; lltextureinfo has a CHECK(true) and a
  case that always skips; llvocache's clamped factor is checked against
  its own clamp;
- checks of something other or less than they say: llagentaccess's
  "pref adult, actual PG" passes on the preference alone;
  llviewerhelputil's substitutions are its own stub's; alfeedback's
  loopback user name is in the path; alscriptstudiovim's "off already"
  and ":wq over unsaved" steps run something else; the HUD outline case
  counts only one kind of hidden pixel; comments promising checks that
  are not there (alscopedata, alscriptstudiorecovery, alscriptstudioaccount,
  alrecoverykeeper, altexturetable, llhttpretrypolicy and others);
- one that leans on evaluation order: alscriptcrumbsbar calls part()
  twice in one expression, and each call replaces the vector the other
  points into;
- state a failure leaks: llviewerassetstats leaves gViewerAssetStats
  set, and alscriptsearchpane its sources' cache;
- leftovers: unused variables and members inherited from TUT
  (lllogininstance, llviewerassetstats, alscriptstudiofiles), empty
  cases (llviewercontrollistener's first, llremoteparcelrequest's
  second, llworldmipmap's getObjectsTile), duplicated checks in
  llslurl, and a policy flag given twice in llsechandler_basic.

…t the viewer keeps

newview_tests takes llui's and llrender's checks, as llui's binaries do:
the headless UI and the colour table made before the first case, what a
frame clears cleared after each, and the UI's and the fonts' state
watched. newview_gl_tests takes llrender's and llcommon's.

newview_test_checks, a listener of newview_tests' own:
- before the first case, makes the queue a case chooses to stand in for
  the main loop's, kept for the run, since work handed back to it for a
  case gone must find it;
- gives the state guard, after every case, the queue ALMainLoop
  answers, the settings groups alive, Script Studio's recovery store,
  save history and viewer, and llcommon's checks: the live thread
  pools and work queues, and LLError's default level.
It does not take llcommon's listener, which makes the event pumps afresh
after every case: the viewer's own event APIs, LLViewerControlListener
among them, listen on the pumps from before main, as they do for the
viewer's whole run, and llviewercontrollistener's cases found none after
the first. The eleven Linden-era binaries take none of these: each runs
alone, and lllogininstance's second case relies on pumps its first made.
I broke a case each way, and each check named it.

Two threads that live for the process are no change a case made:
- the recovery stores' writer is made by newview_test::useRecoveryWriter(),
  which each fixture that makes a store calls before it does, and is
  stopped by the harness's teardown. Made at run start, its thread
  started beside the UI being built, and one start in some hundreds
  found the heap corrupt, so it starts in a case, as it did when each
  file had a process of its own;
- alscriptlookup's threaded case accepts the disk walks' thread, which
  its first walk makes, as the process's from then on.

newview_tests, newview_gl_tests and the eleven, each run whole, pass 10
random orders and 20 repeats with no guard report.

…hey check

Old test bugs TM24's idiom pass found (83b0c1d), fixed.

- alscriptstudiovim: "off already: left" turned an option off, and
  ":wq over something unsaved" ran :x; each runs what it says, and the
  old steps stay under names of their own.
- alrecoverykeeper: "among the discarded" is checked, and so is the
  write the case relied on; each entry looked up is held and required.
- alscriptstudiorecovery: "behind the new one's" checks the order, not
  only the count; a save with no key is checked to keep nothing; the
  window's taker, which captured the case's locals, is put back by
  RAII.
- alscriptstudioaccount: the switches said to stay shared are tested
  with one.
- alscriptnavigation: a check the setup already decided checks that
  nothing was noted.
- alscriptregionusage: an answer for an id already recorded checks
  that the live asker heard it; usageOf() is required before it is
  read, as review on #474 asked.
- alnotecardembedded: a button is checked over each item, and one undo
  is checked to take only the last away.
- alscriptkeymap: the keys are compared, not whether both lists are
  empty; off the Mac, back and forward are checked apart.
- alscriptsnippets: running as root skips, as alfilewrite's test does.
- Reports, statuses, sends, tidies, analyses, closed tabs, offers,
  logs, recent files, watches and prims are required before they are
  read in these and alscriptstudiosaving, alscriptstudiomasters,
  alscriptstudioorphans, alscriptstudiofiles, alscriptstudiodoc,
  alscriptexternaleditor, alscriptrecompile, alscriptcontentsindex and
  alscriptstudiocommands. Unused variables inherited from TUT are gone.

Each new or corrected check fails under a small change to the test's
own input or expectation, at the check and not by crashing.
