Test framework, stage 3: alscript's and lscript's tests in Catch2 - #462
Conversation
Each test file's CTest entry chose its cases by the [#<file stem>] tag Catch2's --filenames-as-tags gives, passed on its command line. The main now sets that itself, as it sets declared order, so a file's run names its file with one tag, and a filter of several files is one argument. That one argument is what a per-case discovery needs: Catch.cmake re-reads its arguments through ARGN, and a TEST_SPEC holding the flag and a filter splits at the ; between them, keeping only the flag. The per-file entries and <binary>/stray_cases no longer pass the flag; a main that stopped tagging would fail them all, the files' filters matching nothing (exit 2) and the strays' everything. alscript's tests that check SLua run a second time under Luau's new type solver, told by AL_TEST_LUAU_SOLVER=new, as their TUT executables each had a second CTest entry. RERUN <run> names the second run, RERUN_SOURCES its files, which must be among SOURCES, and RERUN_ENVIRONMENT what it adds to the binary's environment. Each file of the run is an entry of its own, <binary>_<run>/<file stem>, in a process of its own as the binary's own entries are. With AL_TEST_PER_CASE, a second discovery registers each of their cases as <binary>_<run>/<case>, chosen by their files' tags, with the run's environment set on each. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A TUT executable run twice, its second CTest entry named for its test, an
underscore and the run (alscript's <test>_newsolver), is recorded apart,
under <stem>@<run>, as a test built at another ISA tier is. The run is told
from the executable in the entry's command, so a test whose own name has
an underscore is not taken for one.
check finds a file's second Catch2 run by its entries' binary,
<binary>_<run>/<file stem> (al_add_test_binary's RERUN), and holds it to
TUT's run of that name.
--unrun takes a key naming one run of a file, as the table names it
("<file> (newsolver)"), for a site only that run leaves out: a branch the
other solver's run alone takes is reviewed for the run that skips it, and
still held to running in the other.

…catch.py TM21, the fourth wave of stage 3: alscript's 43 TUT files and lscript's 2, 657 tests, become two Catch2 binaries, each file still run in a process of its own: - alscript_tests, 43 files. The six that check SLua -- alluauservice, alluaufragment, alluaunavigation, alscriptfixes, alscriptlintpass and allsltoslua -- run again under Luau's new type solver, as alscript_tests_newsolver/<file>, where each had a second TUT entry; - lscript_tests: LL's compiler over its scripts, and Tailslide held against it. lscript's directory is configured only where its build needs are met, and the binary with it. The files are tut2catch.py's output, with the names the idiom pass that follows chose. It marked nothing TM-CHECK. One hand edit: alpreprocessor includes <set>, which lltut.h brought it. tut_parity.py, against the TUT executables' recorded results (657 tests and 230 in the new solver's runs, all ok), holds plain for 44 files and their 6 second runs, and for all 45 under --recounted, with 24 assertion sites reviewed as never running in a passing case: - ten in loops over what a check reports of text that checks clean, which should not turn (allsloptimizer's, and alscriptfixes'); - alscriptfixes' REQUIRE(false), reached only to fail; - 13 in branches one solver's run alone takes (allsltoslua's and alluauservice's if (newSolver)), each listed for the run that leaves it. All 53 entries pass. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The idiom pass over TM21's conversion, by seven agents on copies, merged back onto it. Names, messages and assertion strength only: every case and every assertion is where the conversion put it. - Names: 602 of 657 changed. Nearly all were set_test_name sentences with commas, which a Catch2 test spec reads as "or", and many ran past 100 characters. - Messages: 4,872 to 4,044, with 207 CAPTUREs. Most that remain say what a check means, or carry the script a failure has to show; one CAPTURE of a result's text now stands for the hundreds that ended in it. - 18 asserting helpers are named require_*: require_fixed, require_converted, require_checks_clean and the like. - 136 REQUIREs that guarded nothing are CHECKs, and 9 CHECKs whose failure would let the next line read past an end are REQUIREs. - alscriptfixes' UNSCOPED_INFO and REQUIRE(false) is a FAIL. tut_parity.py holds all 45 files and their 6 second runs under --recounted, every case's count unchanged, with 23 sites reviewed as never running in a passing case (the conversion's 24, less the REQUIRE(false)). Old test bugs the agents found, left as they were: - messages built before the call that fills them, so they show nothing or an earlier call's error: alpreprocessor, alluauservice, alluauconfig, allslservice, alscriptweight, allslreferencecheck; - reads with no guard, where a failure would crash rather than fail: results of named(), linkOf(), dueAt(), of(), parse() and the like in almodulelook, almasterlinks, almasterindex, almasterwatch, almasterburst, alscriptenvelope, alnotecardformat, allsloptimizer and alscriptweight; [0] or front() of what nothing sized in alpreprocessor, alincludesearch, aldiskcache, allsleffects, allslservice, alscriptfixes, alluauservice, alscriptformatter and alscriptlexicon; - checks that cannot fail: alpreprocessor compares a find() with itself; allsltoslua looks for ll.OwnerSay where the default writes print, and two order checks pass when the text they order is missing; - checks that test something else: allsloptimizer's "weighs what it says" weighs nothing; alscriptweight's "where it ends" checks where it starts; almessagemap's checks after a failed match read the last match's; - alscriptfixes builds four messages by calling an asserting helper, so it runs twice; a label before CHECK(require_*(...)) is taken by the helper's first assertion, not the CHECK; - allsltoslua's "handler over both" checks run only if a span starts on LSL line 4; - leftovers: allsleffects includes linden_common.h twice, alluauservice has a duplicated comment, and alscriptlintpass a comment about TUT's fifty-test limit. Tailslide's builtins table is the process's and only added to, so ALLSLService::loadBuiltins, after the first load, loads only the names a file adds. Where it added none -- the same file again, in a second service -- it returned before marking the service as having builtins, and hasBuiltins() said false for a load that succeeded. Nothing in the viewer asks hasBuiltins(); the optimizer and the weigher ask the process-wide builtinsLoaded(). But allslservice's first case asserted it, and so passed only as the process's first load: in one process with the other alscript tests, it failed. The service is marked as soon as its file opens. A new allslservice case loads the grid's file into a second service, and fails without the change. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…s the script engines A listener in every binary of alscript's tests, alscript_test_checks, sets the process up once before the first case, as the viewer has it before it checks a script: - ALLuauService::setUpProcess(): Luau's flags as the grid's SLua needs them. A .config.luau run before any service was made saw no integer library, so alluauconfig's cases depended on whether another file had made one first; - the grid's builtins, loaded first, so every builtins file a test loads after them only adds to them, in whatever order the files run. The state guard checks, after every case: - Luau's flags, one a line, so a case that flips one shows which; - that no thread is left inside Tailslide, where the next case's would count as a second thread in at once, as allsloptimizer's clash count assumes there is none; - how many names Tailslide's builtins table holds. allslservice's three cases that load files of their own tell the guard: the table is the process's and only added to, so what they load stays. alscript_tests and lscript_tests take llcommon's checks too. I broke a case each way, and each check named it. The plan expected alpreprocessor 39 and 40 and alscriptweight to need this; each passes alone already, through alpreprocessor's own builtins helper and the weigher's own setUpProcess(). alscript_tests, run whole, passes 10 random orders and 20 repeats with no guard report, and so do lscript_tests and the six new-solver files together under the new solver. Its message was built from error before loadBuiltins filled it, so a failed load said nothing; the load comes first now. Found by CodeRabbit's review of #462, the same mistake the other follow-up commits fix elsewhere. A missing builtins file now fails the check with the load's reason, in both solvers' runs. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Old test bugs #462's idiom pass found, fixed. - alpreprocessor: - "yes4 on its line" compared a find() with itself; it now checks yes4 is output line 19, where the source has it; - three messages were built before the call that fills their reason (the grid builtins' load, and the @line reader's twice): each call comes first now; - guards before reads that could fail: a source location found before its file is read, the size-weighed note's five arguments, a module note's three, and a problem said before problems.back() in the five cases that overrun a limit (CHECK(r.overran) alone did not say there was one). - alincludesearch: the problems an explanation adds, and the suggestions in ./lib/, are sized before they are indexed. - aldiskcache: "kept a moment" could not fail. It held a reference to the list the cache keeps, which the next call for the same folder refills, so it compared that list with itself; it holds a copy now. The later list is sized before [1] is read. - alscriptlexicon: a line comment's end is checked against the text's length before the character there is read; s.closed was no guard, since a line comment is always closed. Each new or corrected check fails under a small change to the test's own input or expectation, at the check and not by crashing. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Old test bugs #462's idiom pass found, fixed. - Messages built before the call that fills their reason, so they said nothing or an earlier call's error: in alluauservice, the definitions' loads, a switch of solver and back, the docs' load and a configuration's parse; in alluauconfig, the parses and the script runs. Each call now comes first, and the messages the idiom pass had cut for saying nothing are back where a failure needs them. - allslservice: "another region's builtins" built its message before the load, from a local that hid the fixture's error; the second load's result hid the fixture's loaded. Both are renamed, and the load comes first. - Guards before reads that could fail: - alluauservice: an outline's first entry, and two lints' arguments; an INFO no longer indexes a signature's parameters by an active parameter that may be past them; - allslservice: the third problem's arguments; - allsleffects: the matches and the calls each case reads two of; - allslconsts: a declaration's position, before an iterator is made from it. - Leftovers: allsleffects included linden_common.h twice, and alluauservice had a comment line its next one repeated. Each new or corrected check fails under a small change to the test's own input or expectation, at the check and not by crashing, in both solvers' runs. Three restored messages (a switch of solver, back, and the other solver's load) have none: no change to the test makes one solver refuse definitions the other took. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Old test bugs #462's idiom pass found, fixed. - A label before CHECK(require_fixed(...) == ...) was taken by the helper's own first assertion: an unscoped message goes to the next assertion, which is the helper's, so a failing CHECK carried no label and the helper's carried the wrong one. Each is a scoped INFO around its CHECK now: 52 in alscriptfixes, 58 in alscriptlintpass. - alscriptfixes built four messages by calling require_acted_on, so the helper, its REQUIREs with it, ran twice; it runs once, and the message reads its result. - alscriptfixes, guards before reads that could fail: the fixes offered for a removal, a require, an include and a negation, each sized before front(). "Not offered a name declared after" read the first fix's second argument unchecked; it now checks no fix offers it. - Both fixtures wrote every load's error to one string, so a "builtins:" or "definitions:" message could show another load's error, or none: each load has its own. - alscriptlintpass: a comment about TUT's fifty-test limit goes. Each new or corrected check fails under a small change to the test's own input or expectation, at the check and not by crashing, in both solvers' runs. alscriptfixes runs 858 assertions where it ran 865: the helper no longer runs twice. …y they check Old test bugs #462's idiom pass found, fixed. Most were reads through what a lookup returned, with nothing checking it found anything: a miss would have crashed the binary, taking every later case with it, rather than failing its own. - Guards before the first read of each lookup: - almasterindex: linkOf(), ALMasterLinks::of() and the index read back from disk (kept in a variable, so the pointer into it stays good); - almasterwatch: the folders asked about, and each period; - almasterburst: every dueAt(); - almasterlinks: of() and find(), and the links left after a remove, which nothing sized; - almodulelook: each module named, and its names; - alscriptenvelope: the code line in its text, the lines either side, and each upload header parsed; - alnotecardformat: each notecard named; - alscriptformatter: the lines a range asked for. - almessagemap: every match shared one Match, so a match that failed showed the one before it, and args[1] was in bounds only because an earlier match had filled args. Each match has its own, and each checks its whole args, which also checks the module name is left blank, as the case says. - alscriptformatter: "a line asked for" checked a line not asked for, as written, which is what formatEach promises; the message says so. Each new or corrected check fails under a small change to the test's own input or expectation, at the check and not by crashing. almodulelook's names guard has none: every module the look finds has a name. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… they check Old test bugs #462's idiom pass found, fixed. - allsltoslua: - "state_entry's, kept" looked for ll.OwnerSay, which the conversion writes as print, so the order it checked was against npos and could not fail; it finds both, then checks the order; - two order checks passed when what they ordered was missing; each first checks it is there; - the "handler over both" checks ran only if some span started on LSL line 4; the span is required now. - allsloptimizer: - "Mono: what it wrote weighs what it says" weighed nothing: when Mono came to weigh a list's shapes against the helpers they bring in, its "l + a" check was loosened to "l = l" and given that message. Its weight is now checked against the weigher's, and "l = l" keeps a message of its own; - each ALLSLTraits::of() is required before it is read. - alscriptweight: - three messages were built before the call that fills their reason (a definitions load, two rewrites): each call comes first now; - "where it is declared" and "where it ends" stood one check off their checks; count's end was checked as at least line 8, and is line 10, its end; - a handler looked up by name is required before it is read. - allslreferencecheck (lscript): "Tailslide compiles it" was built before the compile filled its reason. Each new or corrected check fails under a small change to the test's own input or expectation, at the check and not by crashing, in both solvers' runs where the file has two.
