The end of December 2026 is when Microsoft turns off Basic
authentication for SMTP AUTH by default, so a device or script that
authenticates with a username and password stops being able to send
through Microsoft 365. Three things can be true at once here, and it
is worth working out which one you have before changing anything:
- The tenant setting is still on and can be re-enabled — until
the end of December 2026 this is reversible. Worth checking first,
because it buys you time rather than forcing a decision today.
- The device can do OAuth on newer firmware — check the exact
model against the vendor's advisory. Model lists and firmware
branches diverge, so the product line is not the answer.
- The vendor has ruled it out — several have said in writing that
no OAuth firmware is coming for specific models. If yours is one,
the mail path has to change, not the firmware.
If the answer turns out to be (3) and the from-address genuinely
does not need to be your own domain — a scanner, a cron job, a
monitoring alert — a relay that still accepts plain SMTP AUTH is
three fields on the device rather than a project. ZeroSMTP is one:
free, no paid tier, capped at 200 messages a day, and it sends from
a shared @msgwing.com address rather than yours. If the from-address
has to be your domain, it is the wrong answer and Graph API or a paid
relay is the honest recommendation instead.
