Ensure compatibility with a reasonable subset of distros #5

I suggest we port t to bash as the de-facto default scripting language in order to ensure better compatibility, and test it out on a number of popular distributions, including versions of Debian, CentOS, Ubuntu, Mint and Alt Linux. I think we could crowdsource the testing process.
